    Re: Denver A.M.

    Something Shady Going On Here

One sure-fire way for the Denver Broncos to end their winning streak: allow the opposing running back to become the first in NFL history to rush for over 300 yards. On a whopping 35 carries, Philadelphia’s LeSean “Shady” McCoy averaged 8.6 yards per attempt as he amassed 303, surpassing Adrian Peterson’s previous mark by 7 yards. Surprisingly, McCoy scored only once, capping the opening series with a 5 yard run, and the Broncos were able to keep the score close throughout despite a time of possession disadvantage of over 11 minutes. The game was tied at 7 and 14 and Denver held a 17-14 halftime lead, but the Broncos scored only 3 points in the second half of the 27-20 loss.

After McCoy’s touchdown drew first blood, Montee Ball’s 1 yard run made it a 7-7 game going into the second quarter, but Philly responded with quarterback Landon O’Conner scoring from 8 yards out on a read-option keeper. Denver countered with Zac Piper’s 23 yard touchdown pass to Virgil Green, then established its halftime lead with Matt Prater’s 36 yard field goal that came 13 seconds before the break. The Eagles only needed their first series of the second half (after a Denver punt) to go back on top, with O’Conner scrambling for another 8 yard TD. A goal line stand by the Broncos forced Philly to settle for an 18 yard Alex Henery field goal for the only other points of the third quarter, giving the Eagles a 24-17 lead at the beginning of the 4th. The Broncos got those three points back in their next possession, and in the following Philadelphia series O’Conner got his jaw broken by Winston Guy- making it Tebow Time for the Eagles. With tebow at the helm, the Eagles scored once more, getting a 26 yard Henery field goal with 6:51 to go. With their offense still ineffective, the Broncos punted at the two minute warning and hoped for a quick stop. Britton Colquitt’s kick went out of bounds at the 15 and a false start penalty put Philadelphia in a first and 15 at its 10, raising the hope that the Broncos could get the ball back with a filed short enough to give them a shot at forcing overtime. But the 1st and 15 was improved to a 3rd and 5, and then Tebow hit Clyde Gates for a first down that sealed Denver fate.

Tough loss to the Eagles, McCoy is a monster. And IRL, pending how the 2014 season goes, I hope the Ravens don't resign Rice unless he has a good-great season. Time to cut ties with him, IMO.

With this being 2016 and his birthday being in January, it means Rice will turn 30 before this season's SB. The deal makes even less sense in that light.

The successors to the brothers Manning go head to head for the first time in this one. John Harbaugh and his G-Men have had the tougher time of it so far. Zac Piper is 2-1 as a starter while Dillon Lukehart is 1-7. Lukehart may be playing with a chip on his should because the Broncos would have passed on him in the first round, but with the Broncos looking to rebound from their loss to Philly and coming out of a bye week, they should be able to knock that chip off.

                            Broncos Survive Giant Scare

One play into the fourth quarter of the game between the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants, the outcome seemed to be headed where many expected. The Broncos carried a 23-10 lead into the final frame, which began with the expansion of the lead to 30-10. But then Denver courted disaster before narrowly escaping a collapse. The G-Men rallied to trim their deficit to 30-24 with 3:09 to go, then reached the Denver 6 before failing to pull off the upset that would have given them just their second win of a miserable first post-Eli Manning season.

New York managed one first down before punting out of the opening series, while Denver’s first possession ended with a 48 yard Matt Prater field goal. That field goal was the extent of the first quarter’s scoring, but early in the second the Broncos extended their lead to 6-0 after the replay booth took away what had been called a touchdown catch by Alshon Jeffery. The G-Men got on the board in the next series, set up by a 61 yard Victor Cruz reception that came two plays after the kickoff. David Wilson advanced the ball from the 8 to the 2, then scored from there on third and goal after an incomplete Dillon Lukehart pass. After a Denver three and out, the Giants had the ball back at their 45, but the following series ended with Dunta Robinson’s sideline interception at the Denver 5. A 5 yard TD catch by Mohamed Sanu capped the ensuing 95 yard touchdown drive with 55 seconds remaining in the half. The Broncos soon had the ball back with Martez Wilson picking off a pass intended for Wilson, leading to a 2nd and inches at the 2 with 4 ticks left on the clock. Instead of taking an easy three points, the Broncos looked to punch it in and were successful on a play-action pass from Zac Piper to fullback Lex Hilliard that put them up 20-7.

Denver opened the second half with a three and out that included a sack by Jabaal Sheard and had Britton Colquitt punting out of the end zone. Getting the ball at the Bronco 48, the Giants turned the short field into a 26 yard kick by rookie Colt Barnes to cut the deficit to 20-10. Brandon Banks took the kickoff out to the 40 and Piper found Virgil Green at the New York 38, but then the Denver drive sputtered and concluded with a Prater field goal which was the only other score of the third quarter. The fourth began with the Broncos in a third and goal at the 3 and Montee Ball scoring from there. Lukehart’s 47 yard strike to Cruz came on a 4th and 21 and seemed to be a fluke that did not overly concern the Broncos, but things got decidedly more uncomfortable when the Giants forced a punt, converted a 4th and 2 at the 30 with a 27 yard Wilson run, then made it 30-24 with Wilson’s 3 yard run. The two minute warning came two plays after the kickoff, with the Broncos in a 3rd and 2. A Brayden Lawson run converted but the Broncos then stalled and after the punt the Giants had the ball at their 46 with 1:38 and one time out remaining. Lukehart’s spike at the 6 stopped the clock at 35 seconds, then a pass through the end zone made it third and goal. Ricky Dodgen’s sack at the 14 forced the expenditure of New York’s final time out. A turnover on downs came with a incomplete pass and a pair of kneel-downs got the Broncos out of the Meadowlands with a W.
