            Game Notes
Four weeks ago the Broncos trampled the Chargers 44-12 in Denver. With Philip Rivers still somehow managing to hold on to his job despite a 67.4 rating, things in San Diego shouldn't be much prettier for the Bolts at home, where they've won only once this season. The last meeting put the Broncos above .500 for the first time this year and after this week they should be 2 games over- and two games above .500 at the end of the regular season would be 9-7 and a shot at the playoffs.

            QB Comparison
            Zac Piper - 101.3 QBR, 86/134 (64%), 851 YDS, 9 TD, 1 INT
            Philip Rivers - 67.4 QBR, 187/347 (53%), 2121 YDS, 11 TD, 13 INT

            Rushing Leaders
            Montee Ball - 144-661 (73.6/game), 4.6 avg., 8 TD
            DeMarco Murray - 147-589 (73.6/game), 4.0 avg., 2 TD

            Receiving Leaders
            Virgil Green - 63-781, 12.4 avg., 6 TD
            Josh Gordon - 44-659, 15.0 avg., 3 TD

              Re: Denver A.M.

The only improvement the San Diego Chargers showed from one meeting versus the Denver Broncos to the next was finding the end zone a couple of times. In a 44-12 loss in Denver four weeks ago, the Bolts could only manage four field goals. 13 dropped passes, 7 of them by Santonio Holmes, contributed to a woeful outing for Philip Rivers in that game. This time Charger receivers were not plagued by the dropsies, and Rivers went a decent 15-of-22 for 221 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception (vs. 3 last time out). Decent, but not good enough. Not with DeMarco Murray rushing for only 29 yards, and not with Denver’s Zac Piper a scintillating 32/40 for 330 yards and 3 TD’s while Montee Ball rushed for 108 yards and a score. A 20 point second quarter was part of another 44 point Denver barrage, giving the Broncos a season sweep of the Bolts by an 88-26 margin.

Broncos Squeak Past Skins On Game's 6th Lead Change

This season the Denver Broncos have both throttled inferior opponents (Chargers) and been nearly done in by them (Giants). This week’s game against the visiting Washington Redskins was one of the latter. The Broncs got out-gained in every offensive yardage category, generated only 11 first downs to Washington’s 19, and never led by more than 4 points after blowing a 7-0 lead. But with the help of a +2 turnover margin, Denver was able to prevail in a see-saw battle, making the game’s sixth lead change stick to take a 28-24 victory and improve to 7-4.

After the game began with an exchange of punts, Washington’s second series ended with linebacker Boris Toodle picking off a Robert Griffin III pass intended for Hakeem Nicks at the Redskin 47. Instead of capitalizing on the advantageous field position, the Broncos advanced the ball only 7 yards before punting. Following another Washington punt, fullback Lex Hilliard converted a 3rd and 1 with a 30 yard carry to the enemy 17. Montee Ball dropped a pass on the next play but then a Mohamed Sanu catch made it first and goal at the 2. Ball pushed the pigskin to inside the 1, then Hilliard was stopped for no gain before a Zac Piper sneak got the Broncos on the board on the first play of the second quarter. Washington then got into scoring territory with nothing but runs, but then RGIII was intercepted at the 5 by Kayvon Webster, who got the ball out to the 12. After a Denver punt, Webster inflicted a season-ending broken shoulder blade on Nicks at the end of a 37 yard reception that set up a field goal. On the first play after the kickoff, James Sanders knocked the ball loose from Virgil Green and Dannell Ellerbe made an ankle-level interception (only the second of the season for Piper). RGIII and Fred Davis converted the turnover into a touchdown with a 7 yard hook-up, the the Broncos countered with Ball’s 10th touchdown run of 2016, which came from 6 yards out and gave Denver a 14-10 halftime lead. The big play of that drive was a 48 yard catch and run by the still-unsigned Tavarres King.

The second half began like the first, with an exchange of punts, then Ryan Kerrigan recorded a sack-fumble combo. Right tackle Cordell Lowry recovered the fumble, but coughed it back up on a hit by Bacarri Rambo, who gathered in the second fumble at the Denver 32. A 2 yard run by Alfred Morris converted the turnover and put the Skins back in front at 17-14. Following Brandon Banks’ kickoff return out to the 43, the Broncos answered with Piper’s 29 yard strike to Green. Denver then held its 21-17 lead until only 4:29 was left in the game, when RGIII dumped off to fullback Marcel Reece for a 2 yard touchdown. Banks returned the ensuing kickoff to the Washington 49, and at the 2 minute warning Denver was at the 13. On 3rd and 3 from the 10, Piper found Alshon Jeffery in the end zone for a go-ahead score with 45 seconds to go. Griffin’s 34 yard completion to Montrey Goss got the Skins across midfield at the Denver 45. Sedrick Ellis sacked Griffin for a loss of 5 on the next play, then a completion to Pierre Garcon for a first down was erased by a holding call. After an incomplete pass with RGIII under duress made it 3rd and 25, a screen pass to Jovanta Ewing got the Skins into the red zone, but Griffin, who had thrown on the run, was flagged for an illegal forward pass. With the penalty including loss of down, the Skins were now in a 4th and 29 with 4 ticks left, and the game ended with Eric Hagg picking off a Griffin deep ball.
