    Broncos Dirty The Sheets Again

When Zac Piper returns to duty next week, he’ll inherit a 5-6 Denver Broncos team that trails the AFC West-leading San Diego Chargers by two games. While the Bolts celebrated Thanksgiving by handing the Kansas City Cheaps their 10th straight loss, the Broncos on Sunday could not even sink the rudderless New England Patriots, owners of the first pick in last June’s draft. All three healthy Denver quarterbacks played, and their combined output was zero touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Shut out in the first half, the Broncos did not find the end zone until Jake Locker scrambled 3 yard for a score with 17 seconds left in the 19-13 loss- and that was after Marc Mariani had returned a punt to the 1.

In addition to losing the game, the Broncos lost rookie running back Andre Wallace to a broken collarbone. Wallace was averaging 4.7 yards per carry at the time of his injury, which is his second this season.

This looks like Leonard Johnson recovering a fumble, but it was ruled an interception.

Jake Locker's 3 yard scramble near the end of the game was Denver's lone TD.

              Game Notes
Zac Piper is god to go again, just in time for the Broncos to try to avenge the loss of two weeks ago as they travel to the Black Hole. All is not lost yet. If Piper can stay upright down the stretch, Denver still has a shot at a winning season. With Piper active again, GM John Elway made a couple of roster moves this week. Denver stayed at 3 active QB's by releasing Matt Scott. Elway said that of the three backups, Scott was the one he most wanted to keep, but cap considerations tied his hands. And with Virgil Green out for a significant period, Elway has brought back free agent tight end Julius Thomas. Thomas found out that the grass was not greener on the other side and has never duplicated his 2013 All-Pro season. But seeing how Piper helped turn Green into an All-Pro last year, Elway is hoping that teanming him with Piper can rejuvenate his career. We're fixin' to find out.

              QB Comparison
              Zac Piper - 74.2 rating, 29-48 (60.4%), 311 YDS 3 TD, 3 INT
              Willie Duckett - 60.8 rating, 197/392 (50.3%), 2185 YDS, 10 TD, 14 INT

              Rushing Leaders

              Emmanuel Shepard - 150-511, 3.4 avg., 5 TD

Piper Rights The Ship, Broncos Plug Black Hole

Zac Piper’s second full game of 2017 has resulted in the Denver Broncos’ first double-digit win of the season. As with his earlier return from injury, the second-year signal caller was rough around the edges, throwing 3 interceptions, but the Denver offense was still an order of magnitude better with him running it. Despite the three picks, Piper completed 34 of his 51 attempts (66.7%) for 344 yards and three touchdowns, even with further injuries in the receiving corps, as the Broncos flogged the Raiders, 38-15 in Oakland. His attempts, completions and yardage all exceeded his injury-blunted totals coming into the meeting. Justin Hunter left the game with a turf toe after 3 catches but is expected to be able to suit up for next week’s Dolphins game. Sadly, though, the return of Julius Thomas to a Denver uniform lasted only three receptions. Thomas suffered a broken collarbone, and, as with Virgil Green and Andre Wallace, his only chance of playing again this season is if the Broncos participate in the postseason. Speaking of the playoffs, with the win ending the Broncos’ losing skid at three games and putting them at 6-6, a wild card berth is still a legitimate possibility, provided Piper can stay healthy, but overtaking San Diego’s 2 game AFC West lead with only 4 to play is not a likely scenario.

Piper also got the scoring started witha 2 foot sneak on 4th and goal, which was the only score of the first quarter. With the Broncos leading 17-6 at halftime and 24-9 after three quarters, the Raiders did not find the end zone until Willie Duckett hit Robert Meachem for a 29 yard touchdown on 4th down with only 2:31 left in the game.

                        Not Again! Piper Goes Down...

...But Lawson, Talib Save The Day In Pick-Fest

They say trouble comes in threes, and for the third time this season, the Denver Broncos have lost Zac Piper to an injury. Fortunately, Piper’s early departure did not cost them the game in their Week 14 meeting with the visiting Miami Dolphins. Fins QB Dane Honani and Denver backups Jake Locker and Tyler Bray accounted for a grand total of 10 interceptions. Honani’s 5 made it a career-worst day for him and included a hat trick of picks for Aqib Talib. With the guys not named Zac Piper struggling per usual, Denver got help from an unexpected quarter: third-string tailback Brayden Lawson rushed for 126 yards and scored the touchdown that ultimately provided the margin of victory in the 23-30 win.

Talib’s first pick came on the first play after the opening kickoff, giving the Broncos the ball at the Miami 31. After a pair of misfires, Piper hit Tyson Ellington for a gain of 25 and a first and goal at the 6. Montee Ball ran for a score on the next play- just his third TD of the season after racking up 17 in 2016. The Dolphins then reached the Denver 22 before Honani was intercepted again, this time by rookie linebacker Jeremiah McCay. After the Broncos went three and out, Honani got the Fins on the board with an all-in-the-air 45 yard strike to Kevin Ogletree.

The first quarter ended with the score still 7-7, but the second opened with the Broncos in a 3rd and 3 at the Miami 18. A Piper pass to Justin Hunter put the ball at the 1, and after Ball was stoned for no gain, all Piper got on a sneak was an elbow injury that is expected to take two weeks to mend. Ball then got 2 feet and the Broncos went for it from the one foot line on fourth down, but fullback Trevor Austin couldn’t get that one foot. That red zone visit did not turn out to be totally unproductive however- on the next play Taylor Mays brought down Marshall June in the end zone for a safety. After the free kick, a trio of Ball runs moved the sticks, but then Locker’s first pass was intercepted by Chris Conte, giving the Dolphins the ball at their 45. The turnover was converted into a field goal that put the Fins up 10-9, but the Broncos responded with Locker hitting Mohamed Sanu for a 4 yard TD set up by a 19 yard reception by Justin Hunter. In that series, Hunter also converted a 2nd and 15 on the second play with a 50 yard catch and run. Sanu’s score was followed by an exchange of punts, then with 46 ticks left before halftime and after a sack by Rainey Mallett, Graham Gano hit a 44 yard kick that trimmed Denver’s lead to 16-13. The half then ended with a “turnover on downs” an incomplete Locker Hail Mary.

Lawson started the second half in the Denver backfield and his first two carries went for 6 and 32 yards to the Miami 43, but the drive ended with Locker picked off in the end zone by Fisher Sargent. A Miami punt was then followed by another Locker interception, made by Reshad Jones on deep ball. The third quarter went on to be scoreless, but it ended with Miami in a 2nd and 8 at the Denver 34. Talib’s second interception ended that series at the Bronco 15, and Bray took over at QB for Denver. Bray’s first series was unproductive, as was the following Miami one, blunted by a McCay sack. His second was cut short by Sargent’s second interception, a long ball that was returned to the Miami 49. The next two Miami possessions were terminated by interceptions by Mays and Talib, and a play after Talib achieved his hat trick with 3:47 to go, Lawson bolted 53 yards to the house to put the Broncos up 23-13. At the two minute warning the Dolphins were in a 1st and 10 at the Denver 20, and they went on to make it a 3 point game again with Honani’s pass to Mike Wallace. Miami kicked away, hoping that with all 3 time outs remaining, they could force a quick exchange of possession and force overtime. Two Lawson runs generated a first down, but the next 3 only produced 8 yards. The Broncos allowed the play clock to run down to 1 second before calling a time out with the game clock at 00:06, and time expired as punt returner Eddie Royal (what was he thinking?) made a fair catch.

                        Now that’s a muff.

Brayden Lawson’s 53 yard touchdown run proved to be a game-winner.

                                Game Notes
The Seahawks have fallen far since winning a second Super Bowl. Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch are gone without comparable replacements and the 12th Man is on vacation this year- the 3-10 'Hawks are only 2-5 at home. The are the third-worst scoring offense in the league and 28th in total offense, as once-dominant running game is 29th. But as bad as they are, the Broncos beating them with one of their "backhoe" QB's is anything but a given.
