"Aaron, get on junior varsity offense as running back." Coach Taylor, the junior varsity coach, yelled to me.
"Yes sir." I said putting on my helmet and getting in the huddle.
"38 Right Counter." Timmy Weston called out.
"Break!"
I breathed out a deep breath.
"Set hut!"
I started to the left, cut back to the right.
I shook off one tackler, juked out another.
But was brought down after a fifteen yard gain.
"Good run Street!" Coach Taylor yelled out while clapping.
"Coach Patterson, get over here!" Coach Taylor yelled, wanting to show Coach Patterson what I could do.
"Okay Aaron, this is all on you. 52 Left Sweep!" Timmy Weston said.
"Break!"
"Hike!"
I took the ball, and burst up the middle.
I got past the lineman, I was into the second level.
I got to the outside, and went all the way for a touchdown.
"Whoo!" All the junior varsity players yelled.
"Aaron, you ran through the wrong gap!" Coach Patterson yelled at me.
"No, it was a 52 left sweep." I said back, knowing that I ran it right.
"No, you ran between the guard and the tackle, it's supposed to be outside of the tackle."
"Yes coach." I said, knowing now that I got it wrong.
"Get in at free safety Street!" Coach Patterson yelled.
The rest of practice I played free safety with the junior varsity players.
I did okay, but nothing really stood out.
Then coach brought us in for the end of practice.
"Next week starts the first week of games. We're up against Island Marsh. Junior Varsity on Monday, Freshman on Wednesday, and Varsity on Friday Night. The depth charts will be up in the school lounge, the locker room, and we will tell you the day of. Now go home and get ready!" Coach Patterson yelled dismissing us.
I caught a ride home with my new legal guardian, Coach Smith, the quarterbacks coach.
"Ready for the games?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm not sure about playing running back and or free safety."
"Just play your best. I'm sure you can play those positions."
"I know, it's just I've been quarterback my whole life."
"And you still will be on the freshman team, and maybe next year. Varsity?" He said questioning himself.
"Yeah, I know. Can you drop me off at Madison's?
"Yeah, are you guys, you know, dating?"
"Coach Smith." I said, a bit embarrassed.
"None of that, call me Evan."
"Yes, Coa... Evan."
"We're here." He said, as we pulled into Madison's drive way.
"See you later." I said, getting out of the car.
"Bye." He said, leaving.
I went up to Madison's door and rung the doorbell and she let me in.
"So, how's it like having Coach Smith be your legal guardian?" She asked me.
"Well, he's no mom." I said jokingly, it had been eleven days since my mom had. Well, you know.
"Can I just ask you something? And then we can go out to eat." She asks.
"Shoot." I said.
"Do you think, Riley did it?"
"I don't know, I wish I just knew where he was."
