MATTHEW STAFFORD LEADS HIS LIONS AGAINST TOM BRADY’S PATRIOTS IN SUPERBOWL 50
Two teams that couldn’t seem more different are really more alike than you might think. The Patriots put up gaudy numbers on offense in route to setting an NFL record for most points scored in a season. They ranked number one in total yards, total offense, passing offense, and points per game. They finished second in total rushing offense. Detroit’s offense was no slouch either. The Lions came in 7th in total offense, 7th in passing yards, 11th in points per game and 16th in rushing yardage.
On defense is where the teams really look the same, at least on paper. New England was first in total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, and points allowed. They finished 5th in rushing yards allowed. Detroit was third in total yards allowed, 15th in passing yards allowed, 2nd in rushing yards allowed and 3rd in points allowed.
Both teams lean on their star quarterbacks. Both teams use a running back by committee approach. Both teams have very deep, capable receiving corps. Both teams have good offensive lines. Both teams have strong defenses at all three levels. This should be a great matchup.
The two teams took different paths to the Superbowl. New England was mostly unchallenged in a 16-0 regular season campaign before shutting out the Chiefs 28-0 then the Broncos 21-0 to clinch their spot. Detroit started out 2-2 with close losses to Arizona and Seattle early. They then throttled the Packers in Green Bay in week five. After a week six win over the Bears they dropped a home game to the 49ers to sit at 4-3 before their bye. A three game win streak was broken up by an ugly 16-3 loss to the Bears at home in week 12, making their record 7-4. they were entrenched in a three way battle with the Bears and Packers for the NFC North title. A week 13 win and a week 14 loss did nothing to clear up the division title picture. At 8-5 the Lions could either buck up and win their division or struggle and go home after the regular season. They bucked up with three straight wins over the Falcons, Rams and Eagles to clinch the division crown and the third seed in the NFC playoffs.
They got their revenge over the Cardinals with a 34-7 drubbing of Arizona in the Wild Card round. Next up was a nail biter of a win in Philadelphia by a score of 29-22 in the Divisional Round. They punched their ticket by taking down the heavily favored Seahawks by a score of 27-6 in Seattle in the NFC Championship game.
“We’ve all seen that 16-0 doesn’t matter in the Super Bowl. We’re ready.” Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson said immediately after the Lions beat the Seahawks.
Players to Watch
Quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming off a season in which he threw for 4,323 yards along with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Far from his best year Stafford has made big plays when it counts. He will need to play a very good, mistake free game to give his team a chance against the Patriots stifling defense.
In the backfield the Lions use a combination of Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. Bush led the team with 788 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. He also caught 30 passes for 235 yards and two scores. Bell carried 147 times for 416, just a 2.8 yards per carry average, while scoring 3 times. Bell caught 22 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Even at his age Bush is still a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. New England will have to prevent him from making any splash plays and swinging the momentum.
The Lions have one of the deepest groups of pass catchers in the league. Calvin Johnson caught 110 passes for 1,529 yards and 12 scores while Golden Tate also caught 110 passes for 1,207 yards and 6 scores. Behind them was Brandon Coleman with 65 catches for 569 yards and two scores. Tight End Joseph Fauria recorded 353 yards and a score on 59 receptions. New England could have their hands full with this group as Stafford is comfortable throwing to any one of them in any situation.
Defensively the Lions have talent at all three levels. MLB Stephen Tulloch recorded 114 tackles to lead the team. DT Nick Fairley and DE Ezekiel Ansah each had 7 sacks. Safety Glover Quin’s 7 picks led the team and corner Darius Slay had six. Brady will need to be careful with the ball as those two are very good at closing in and snatching away the ball. Ndamukong Suh didn’t put up flashy numbers but he did lead the team with 18 tackles for a loss, one more that Fairley’s 17.

Outlook
Vegas has set the Patriots as 5 point favorites. We think it could be closer than that. The keys to the game are Matthew Stafford and the Patriots running game against that strong Detroit defensive line. This should be a good one.

NEW ENGLAND AND DETROIT WOULD FACE OFF IN SUPER BOWL 50
Scoreboard 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
New England Patriots [16-0] 3 14 0 14 31
Detroit Lions [11-5] 0 7 6 0 13
A CHAMPION IS CROWNED
Leading up to the Super Bowl there was a lot of chatter that the Lions weren’t the team that should be there or that they weren’t the team people wanted to see against the Patriots. For as many fans as there were that wanted to see New England make history by going a perfect 19-0 there were two that wanted to see them fall. Some just wanted to see a good game.
Things started off slowly with Stephen Gostkowski’s 36 yard field goal being the only score in the first quarter. Detroit answered that score with a long drive that spilled into the second quarter and was capped with a 7 yard Stafford to Tate touchdown pass to put the Lions on top 7-3.
New England would take charge and score a pair of touchdowns before halftime. The first score came on a 13 yard Brady to Dobson strike. After a Lions punt the Pats made it 17-7 with a 1 yard touchdown run by Blount.
Detroit managed a pair of third quarter field goals and it was anyone’s game going into the fourth quarter as the Patriots held a 17-13 lead. New England put together a great drive and increased their lead to 24-13 on a 4 yard Brady to Gronkowski touchdown pass. Detroit’s next possession ended abruptly when Jamie Collins forced a Stafford fumble and Rob Ninkovich was there to scoop it up. New England capitalized with a seven yard Blount touchdown run. From there the Patriots pinned their ears back and were able to keep the Lions from putting up anymore points to win by a final score of 31-13.
The win gave New England the first ever perfect 19-0 record, besting their 2007 campaign in which they fell to the Giants in the Super Bowl after coming in at 18-0.
“It’s just an incredible accomplishment for all of us. It’s really going to take some time to sink in I think.” Tom Brady said after the historic win.
Defensive end Rob Ninkovich was presented the Lamar Hunt Trophy as MVP. He recorded two tackles, two sacks and recovered the key fourth quarter fumble.
“We just didn’t do enough to win. Nothing in particular. Just didn’t do enough as a team.” Lions receiver Calvin Johnson said of the loss.
