      Conference Championships

      Mid-American

      24 vs 31
      POTG: Tommy Woodson (QB-AKR) 17-25 204 PaYds 4 TD 1 INT 43 RuYds
With a new coach and some new pieces moving in for the Akron Zips, they managed to overcome some early difficulties in order to rally their way to the MAC Championship. Despite the early departure of Chandler Kincade and the new head coach, this unit claimed it's second consecutive MAC Championship and could be looking to move up in conference play after their recent era of dominance in the MAC. They managed to stave off the Broncos, thanks to a tremendous fourth quarter rally that saw a 14-24 deficit turn into a 31-24 point victory. Tony Guidry hauled in a short slant and managed to force his way through a defender to score the game winner and propel the Zips to their second consecutive conference championship.

      Mountain West

      21 vs 24
      POTG: Marcus Stamps (HB-SDSU) 25 Carries 130 RuYds 2 TD 2 Rec 9 ReYds
The Cougars came in hoping to be the third piece in what would cause considerable havoc in the playoff system by knocking off the undefeated Aztecs and prevent the opportunity for a Mid Major to make the playoffs. They very nearly manage dto do that and claim a conference title in their first season with the Mountain West. It ended up not working out however, the Cougars who rallied to a third quarter 21-17 lead, watched it fall away. Jake Rodrigues was the focal point of this offense throughout the year and considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country. However it would be the halfback Marcus Stamps who is very good in his own right, who took on the team and drew them to victory. He was responsible for the team's final two touchdowns in their victory. Including a 4 yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter, the final score of the game that sealed the Aztec victory.

      Pacific 12

      42 vs 21
      POTG: Royce Freeman (HB-ORE) 18 Carries 112 RuYds 4 TD 2 Rec 37 ReYds
28 unanswered to start the game for the Oregon Ducks who stymied the USC Trojans at every possible point of attack, making it impossible for them to do much of anything. At the same time, Royce Freeman ran rampant on the opposition. Freeman scored three first half touchdowns and one in the fourth to end a potential USC rally and return the momentum to the Ducks. The Quack Attack has had a down year, but they put a major bullet point on the season by claiming yet another Pacific 12 title even in a down season for the program. The Ducks will look forward to a potential BCS matchup, while USC will stay well out of grasp of a playoff birth.

      SEC

      27 vs 21
      POTG: David Cornwell (QB-BAMA) 25-36 244 PaYds 3 TD 1 INT 40 RuYds
The Crimson Tide took on the Florida Gators who came in undefeated running through the SEC gauntlet, but they ran into a brick wall against the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Tide escaped with a victory. The Tide had twice as much offensive production than the opposition, but still only escaped with a six point victory, a testament to this Gator's squad. While the loss is against a high enough ranked opponent that the Gators may still make the playoffs, the Tide guaranteed themselves a birth into the playoffs. Nick Saban quickly removed himself from the hot seat he started the season upon. David Cornwell had a strong first half, shaking off an early interception return for a touchdown to throw a touchdown pass to Tyren Jones on the next drive to tie the game, the Tide took a lead into the half, but struggled in the second half. They would ultimately only need a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter to take the SEC Championship.

      Sunbelt

      21 vs 26
POTG: Cameron Knight (TE-TEXST) 7 Rec 54 ReYds 2 TD
A tremendous game from their tight end helped propel the Bobcats in a matchup of two of the newest additions to the FBS ranks, to their Sunbelt championship. Last season the Bobcats lost by three to the Hilltoppers, this season they managed to take the throne. The Bobcats made good on their pipeline in Texas to bring in enough talent to claim their program's first FBS conference title. They hope to repeat their fortunes from a year ago when they claimed a bowl victory, this time as Sunbelt champions. Junior tight end Cameron Knight has had a moderate at best season, but had a tremendous Sunbelt finale as the Bobcats emerged victorious.

A look at the playoff bracket prior to official release
          Projected Playoff Bracket

          (1) Florida Gators L vs (4) San Diego State Aztecs W
          (2) Virginia Tech Hokies L vs (3) Oklahoma Sooners L

          On the bubble:
Tennessee (DNP); Ohio State L; USC L; Alabama W

          Out:
          Kansas State; Georgia; Stanford

With three of the top four losing and the lone undefeated coming from a midmajor, the number of questions rounding into the upcoming season are innumerable. The nation has a lot of questions as a lot of teams are fighting for just four spots following the chaos of the Conference Championship week. The Hokies fall, the Gators fall and the Sooners fall, so did Ohio State and USC as the top two fringe candidates and now the arguments start rolling in.

The Aztecs are the only program with first place votes, earning the respect for finishing undefeated, but will that spot hold when the playoff brackets are released in the near future? That's yet to be seen. As for now, the only two guarantees that exist are that San Diego State and Alabama will make the playoffs, where do the rest of the teams fit though?

The Top eight sits with SDSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Kansas State, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Stanford.

Outside of that it's truly unlikely those that design the bracket will dip lower than the top eight. The SEC dominates the top four with three teams, but due to rules, only the top two make the playoffs, that would lead to an interesting debate if the Florida Gators would get slotted in over the Volunteers after a hard fought contest against the Tide. After all this Volunteer squad was routed by that same Gators squad. Yet a recent loss to the Crimson Tide make it hard for the Gators to step back in to the playoff discussion. It's virtually impossible to suggest that both teams will miss the playoffs.

Behind them are the Wildcats, the Wildcats lone defeat came against the Sooners who were recently knocked from the top four with a defeat to West Virginia, the Wildcats avoided the Mountaineers this season so a comparison isn't easy. This Wildcat team has had just three games decided by less than ten points all year long, one of those being their defeat to the Sooners, the other two being a 4-8 UL-Monroe squad and the 7-5 Cowboys of Oklahoma State. Is that enough to sneak them into the playoffs?

The Hokies defeat to #15 Clemson didn't send them very far down the polls, but much like the Gators, a recent loss makes it tough to justify this team making the playoffs. They ran the gauntlet undefeated, but the Tigers avenged a 27-20 defeat to the Hokies in the fourth week by besting them in the conference championship. The Hokies do have wins over two conference champions to their credit which gives them more firepower heading into the pollsters discussions.

Georgia and Stanford are real darkhorses, neither made their conference title game, both have three losses compared to the prior teams having a maximum of one defeat. Won't go much in depth between the two, but an ugly loss to a 6-6 Boise State squad gives the Bulldogs the edge between these two as the playoffs round the corner.

UAB accepts bid for Poinsettia Bowl

The Blazers were able to celebrate a terrific season where they absolutely exceeded all expectations, projected a 2-10 squad, the Blazers rose to 7-5 in Coach Corey Warby's first season led by Jeremiah Briscoe and Collin Lisa in the passing attack, these Blazers are an offensive force, featuring the #2 passing offense in the country with 320.8 yards per game, UAB has embraced the air raid style that Coach Corey Warby preaches, joined by the #33 rush defense, this Blazers squad was able to cover up the league's worst pass defense by shutting down teams running games and outscoring them. The Cougars bring one of the better ground attacks, but a poor pass attack and an average at best defense.

Kirk Herbstreit has projected the Blazers to win by ten, by virtue of their high scoring offense, he does feel it would be a close game, but the edge goes to the Blazers. The Cougars however are good at creating turnovers, if the turnover bug bites the Blazers, the momentum in this one could swing quickly. The key players in this one will be Jeremiah Briscoe of the UAB Blazers (QB) who has 3798 passing yards with 32 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions, tremendous numbers for the quarterback. Collin Lisa has been his top target throughout the season with 80 receptions for 1393 yards and eleven touchdowns.

For the Cougars, the player to watch will be Josh Crowder, the sophomore halfback piled up 1423 rushing yards on the season to go along with 12 touchdowns. He is averaging 6.5 yards per carry and will take on a strong Blazers defense that has ranked towards the top of the league in ground defense. The Cougars will need to see production out of fourth year junior Hunter Moore if they expect a victory in this bowl matchup.

The two teams will do battle on December 20th, with Coach Warby seeking his first ever bowl victory!

              College Football Bracket officially releases

The College Football Committee has reached a decision upon the upcoming season for the college football landscape, and there will definitely be some controversy with their decisions, but none the less they stand by their four teams. One rule they had to follow was no more than two teams from an individual conference, which immediately rules out of the three prospective SEC teams, one won't get the call and we all know Alabama got in. Jointly, if two teams hail from the same conference, unless they manage to finish 1-2 in most polls (2 of 3) than they will play eachother in the first round automatically to prevent the backlash that the LSU-Alabama NCG received.

That leads us to our #1 Team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide took a 27-21 victory against the previous #1 Florida to take the SEC Championship. There is only a little bit of discussion on this pick, as the San Diego State Aztecs were undefeated, but the Tide comes from a much tougher conference and takes the top spot.

The #2 team is the #1 team in most polls, the San Diego Aztecs. The Aztecs rode a 13-0 record through the Mountain West, giving them a rare birth into the playoffs. They don't have much to get them through an eye test, their quality victories aren't very high as most of their contests came from Mountain West play, which gave the Tide at 12-1 the nod over them for the top seed, but due to an undefeated record they will still get a higher seed, albeit a tougher matchup.

Now when we move to 3 and 4 is when things start to get more spry. The #3 team in the football playoffs is the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies fell just one spot from #2 to #3 by losing to the Clemson Tigers, or rather their only loss against a Bowl Eligible squad, a 6-0 record up to that point gives them the toughest S.O.S. of the teams in the running for the position. The Hokies will get an opportunity to still get a title appearance despite a difficult loss in the ACC Championship game, but a dominating 12 games before that edged them over the others.

That leaves one spot for either the Volunteers, Gators and Wildcats.

The fourth and final team in the football playoffs is the Florida Gators.

It was a tough choice for the committee, the Wildcats have more wins against bowl eligible squads, but their loss to Oklahoma (#10) stood out more than the Gators (#2). A difference of one bowl eligible victory wasn't enough to give the Wildcats the favor of the voting committee. The Volunteers were ruled out early in the process with just four victories against bowl eligible squads and a weak strength of schedule, the committee was not satisfied with the #3 Vols. Their lone loss was the Gators in a rout, the lone head to head between these three teams.

              That leaves the matchups being

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC) vs #4 Florida Gators (SEC)

#2 San Diego State Aztecs (MWC) vs #3 Virgina Tech Hokies (ACC)

Blazers outscore Cougars to claim Poinsettia Bowl

That Air Raid attack led the Blazers past their Mountain West opponents in the Brigham Young Cougars. Head Coach Corey Warby has led his team in a stunning turn around against the opposing Brigham Young Cougars, BYU was a squad in the playoffs just a year ago, a mighty fall for this team while the Blazers are definitely trending upwards under Corey Warby.

The Blazers passing attack saw Jeremiah Briscoe silence his critics and post another terrific game in completing 60% of his passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns with just one turnover. The Blazers defense also did a number to the oppositions passing attack, allowing just 145 passing yards to the Cougars starting quarterback, where this was kept interesting was the ground.

The Cougars pounded the ball down the Blazers throats and were relentless. Josh Crowder earned Cougars player of the game honors with a 190 yard performance where he averaged 11.1 yards per carry, and scored a touchdown. The halfback also had a carry of 76 yards on the afternoon and 81 of his 190 came after first contact. He was relentless, so was Lee Clark, the second year freshman had a tremendous performance in limited action averaging 10.5 yards per carry for 63 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Cougars.

The Cougars would manage to rally from a 31-14 halftime deficit by outscoring the Blazers 25-13 the rest of the way despite needing to rely on their ground attack to churn out yardage. Things wouldn't end well for the Cougars however, who were devastated on a touchdown pass from Jeremiah Briscoe to Collin Lisa with under a minute in the game and 12 yards to claim the victory.

The Blazers improve to 8-5 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 7-6.

Last season, BYU was destroyed by the Sooners in the opener of the playoffs which led many to be hesitant towards the Aztecs inclusion this season, but with the team performing as well as it had, while jointly being the sole undefeated in the college football landscape this season, they made it to the playoffs, and not only that, they are going to be national title bound!

Led offensively by Jake Rodrigues, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes, while throwing for 140 yards on an afternoon when they didn't really need to rely much upon on their quarterback. The defense took care of all parts of this Hokies opposition, and did so with ease. Billy Vaughn Jr stepped up in a big way, forcing a pair of fumbles that led to touchdowns for the Aztecs allowed for them to slip away with an easy victory thanks to a hard fought performance from the defense. It wasn't as if the Hokies were shut down. The offense managed 296 yards and 21 first downs, but those two interceptions doomed the Hokies, who will bow out of the playoffs in their first time ever making it.

Some fans of the sport weren't excited for a second matchup pitting the Gators and Tide in consecutive weeks but it worked out well enough for the parties involved. The Gators and Tide put on a show, with the Gators getting their revenge in overtime against the opposition.

The Gators pounded out 236 yards on the ground and outgained the Tide by 40 yards and 5 first downs. The Tide thought they had the game, after tying the game early in the third quarter on a Tyren Jones touchdown rush that knotted the score at 21 a piece, than moving into the fourth they would punch the ball in for the go ahead touchdown.

Will Grier took his squad downfield, leading to the quarterback hooking up with Brandon Powell and the halfback would follow his blockers to get a burst of speed and the score to tie the game up with just 55 seconds to go, and to make matters worse, on third and one in overtime, the same halfback followed his blockers to score from eleven yards out to stun the Crimson Tide and earn their birth into the title game.

#4 Florida Gators 17 vs #2 San Diego Aztecs 24

San Diego State bests Florida to claim national championship

The Aztecs stand atop the wreckage of the 2016-2017 football season as the lone undefeated. All the furor passed about this team, all the negative comments regarding their conference lay to rest as the Mountain West welcomes the Aztecs, the national champions who finish 15-0 on the season after beating the Florida Gators 24-17 in the national championship game.

The Gators mounted a massive run in the second quarter, with Will Grier tucking the ball and running for a pair of touchdowns, the Gators lone touchdowns, and the last Gator score coming at 2:15 remaining in the half. The Florida Gators looked primed to best the Aztecs, who saw a 10-3 lead turn into a 10-17 deficit by the end of the half.

Except the offense just couldn't turn it on for the Gators, coming out flat after the half, the offense was shutdown by the Aztecs who saw Jake Rodrigues mount two scoring drives, including one inside of the four minute mark, connecting with senior Micah Holder. Holder was wide open on a slant, and reeled in the bullet, raising his hands as he crossed the plane of the end zone, the crowd which was largely Gator saw the red's light up in celebration, the Florida Gators hung their heads and with just four to go the Aztecs were primed for a title.

Will Grier would try to mount a comeback and get his Gators to the Aztecs end of the field, reaching their 47 before he dropped back and looked for his target deep, the ball would be reeled in by senior safety Taylor Lomax and he'd be tackled immediately, the team nearly storming the field at that point. With the clock at 2:31, a first down burnt the remainder of their time outs and the victory formation was brought out. To the success of the Aztecs, they claim their first ever national title.

Rocky Long has done a tremendous job, leading the first ever mid-major champion in recent history, and only in the second year of the playoff was this accomplished. His team was passed up for the top seed by the Alabama Crimson Tide and used that as a chip on their shoulder, one that carried them to a championship game where oddsmakers still had them as 10 point under dogs despite them shutting down the Hokies. All in all, this defense has allowed just 20 points in the playoffs, while the offense has scored 45. Those are terrific differences and easily spell out why this team emerges as champions at the end of all the wreckage that this season carried.

                      Rocky Long calls it quits

Rocky Long couldn't think of a better way to go out, at age 68, he was reaching that for the past several years, the reality that his time as the head man was running short, but he wanted that one marquee moment, whether that simply meant winning the Mountain West on his way out, or making San Diego State into the strong squad they have been, either way this team has made major strides under the coach.

Including a national title, a feat that none expected to be possible, especially so at the onset of the season, but as each victory piled up, each chance for this team to make it's move became more and more apparent, and finally it came to realization, the old ball coach will get one ring to go out on.

"It's been a tremendous opportunity for me to lead this program, and to reach the heights we have this season is just unbelievable.." Spoke to a somber press gathering. The Aztecs made quick work of his vacancy by promoting offensive coordinator Trent Miles to the head coach position. The team also took the time to announce that defensive coordinator Mike Breske has left the Aztecs to take over the Longhorns, whom announced they had parted ways with Charlie Strong.

                            Blazers without a head coach

The UAB Blazers and their faithful were treated to a tremendous season from their football squad that many football experts projected to top out at three or four wins, and head coach Corey Warby took full advantage of this, his tremendous season including the huge success of his air raid attack made him an upper tier coaching prospect and while the top positions went filled without a phone call to him, positions such as Notre Dame didn't give him much of a passing glance.

Yet the coach will be making a move in the region, moving a little north from Alabama, as he will take over the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Commodores underachieved to a 2-10 record this season, but are hoping with the bevy of offensive talent, a season that is on par with what Coach Warby reached with the Blazers would be possible.

"It's an opportunity for me to grow and go for that goal of a national championship. It's amazing to have such an offer presented to me in such short order but I will make use of every opportunity afforded to me, and I guarantee that."

Coach Warby was in discussions with Maryland and Utah as well, but the coach with Southern ties opted to join the Southeastern conference as the new attempt at bringing Vanderbilt to relevance.

                              Create a Coach updates

Quinn Retney and the UMass Minutemen have announced the coach signing a six year contract extension following the best season this program has had in the FBS ranks. Retney's ground heavy spread option managed to get the Minutemen to four wins, and the hopes are there for them to make the leap to a bowl birth this season, and it's reasonable, this was an injury riddled team.

Eric Grant received offers to be a coordinator at Florida State and Syracuse but ultimately rejected both to remain the head man at Idaho.

John Valkyrie received an offer to be the offensive coordinator for the San Diego State Aztecs but chose to reject the offer.

Zach Mueller was announced as the head coach of the Rice Owls in a short press conference. Mueller a graduate of the University of Wisconsin has coached primarily in the South, namely Texas and naturally chose to take over the Texas program in Rice. Mueller brings an Air Raid offense to the Owls.

Jamal Frazier marks the second coach in our series to get their start at Wyoming, Frazier will take over the head coaching job and institute the triple option for the Cowboys. Frazier's teams are notorious for only passing once or twice a game, don't expect much deviation from that in Wyoming!

                                Coaching Pedigree Update

For a coach to be considered influenced by the Pedigree of Tyler Kozlov, they must coach for Kozlov for 2+ seasons and willingly leave to be a head coach of a program within one year of Kozlov's departure

Offensive Coordinator AJ Milwee of the Akron Zips followed the coach's movement, following up with one of our coaching prospects, by taking over the UAB Blazers formerly Corey Warby's squad. Warby moved on to greener pastures and AJ Milwee will follow in his wake, taking over the Blazers program in hopes of keeping the successful season in tow.

Defensive Coordinator Lance Anderson joins AJ Milwee in moving on from the Akron Zips following their MAC Championship. The ex-Stanford, Akron assistant has finally been given the opportunity to take over a program, staying in state to take over a struggling Cincinnati Bearcats squad.
