Eric Grant (HC) of the Idaho Vandals
Season Review
The Idaho Vandals didn't have much expectations in their first season under Eric Grant, the Vandals in the past three years preceding this showing had the record of 6-30. Eric Grant's expectations weren't very high, especially in his first run as head man, but he blew past expectations in leading his team to a 5-7 record, their best in recent history.
The main problem this team had was momentum. They couldn't get any going. Never winning more than one in a row, the Vandals wouldn't earn bowl eligibility, and with a record of 0-4 against the top 45, they struggled against upper competition, but this wasn't a dominant roster either. Their big victory came in the second to last week of the season when they traveled out to Tulsa and bested the Golden Hurricane. Their worst defeat came at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first week when they were destroyed, 0-41.
Their offensive player of the year was Matt Linehan, the senior quarterback went (122-203) for 1569 Passing Yards and 13 TD to just 2 INT, a key factor when he was healthy. He would miss four games throughout the season and parts of two more, leading Jake Luton to back him up and make some strides of his own. Luton was solid in relief, passing for 8 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.
The defensive player of the year was Tyrone Kelly, Kelly was a defensive stalwart for the Vandals. Leading the way with 85 tackles and 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble, the team will look to his leadership next season. Another big performer was freshman Scottie Oliphant, the freshman starting outside linebacker came up huge for the Vandals this season, with a team high five sacks the Vandals and Eric Grant can expect this young defense to improve next season.
