Eric Grant (HC) of the Idaho Vandals
    Season Review

The Idaho Vandals didn't have much expectations in their first season under Eric Grant, the Vandals in the past three years preceding this showing had the record of 6-30. Eric Grant's expectations weren't very high, especially in his first run as head man, but he blew past expectations in leading his team to a 5-7 record, their best in recent history.

The main problem this team had was momentum. They couldn't get any going. Never winning more than one in a row, the Vandals wouldn't earn bowl eligibility, and with a record of 0-4 against the top 45, they struggled against upper competition, but this wasn't a dominant roster either. Their big victory came in the second to last week of the season when they traveled out to Tulsa and bested the Golden Hurricane. Their worst defeat came at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first week when they were destroyed, 0-41.

Their offensive player of the year was Matt Linehan, the senior quarterback went (122-203) for 1569 Passing Yards and 13 TD to just 2 INT, a key factor when he was healthy. He would miss four games throughout the season and parts of two more, leading Jake Luton to back him up and make some strides of his own. Luton was solid in relief, passing for 8 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.

The defensive player of the year was Tyrone Kelly, Kelly was a defensive stalwart for the Vandals. Leading the way with 85 tackles and 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble, the team will look to his leadership next season. Another big performer was freshman Scottie Oliphant, the freshman starting outside linebacker came up huge for the Vandals this season, with a team high five sacks the Vandals and Eric Grant can expect this young defense to improve next season.

Corey Warby (HC) of the UAB Blazers

The Blazers had a tremendous season and their best in recent history as new comer head coach Corey Warby led his team to an 8-5 record including a bowl victory over the Brigham Young Cougars in the Poinsettia Bowl on a thrilling late touchdown pass. Coach Warby has turned to the air raid to put his imprint upon this team and did so with tremendous results. This was a Blazer team that many wrote for dead after losing 4 of their first five. No one expected them to go the remaining stretch 6-1, their lone loss against the Georgia State Panthers in that span. Embarrassing losses behind them gave them an opportunity to grow as a team.

Their best victory was easily the Poinsettia Bowl. The Cougars had a good team that just didn't seem able to convert and when it was all said and done, the Blazers had just enough to beat a team that just a season ago was in the playoffs. A major accomplishment for the coach. His worst loss came against the Ragin Cajuns. Not by scoring differential, but the Ragin Cajuns finished in the bottom fifth of college football, and losing to a team in that metric is never good, it marked the middle of the 1-4 streak this team had before they turned it around against Old Dominion.

The offensive player of the year was a little difficult to judge, would it be Jeremiah Briscoe, the signal caller that virtually put this team on his shoulders and carried them. Broscoe played all 13 games. Or would it be the top wideout, Collin Lisa? When it comes down to it, the award belongs to Jeremiah Briscoe whom spearheaded the second best passing attack in all of college football. Jeremiah Briscoe would toss for 4143 yards with 35 touchdowns to just 15 interceptions on the season .

For the defense, Ervin Alston earned the nod for his all around performance. Leading the team in tackles, recording 12 for a loss, 3.5 sacks and 11 pass deflections with a team high 2 fumble recoveries had Alston all over the football field for the Blazers defense, with him graduating, as is a few members of this defense, a new leader will need to step up if this team has much hope of moving forward.

Coach Corey Warby accepted the coaching position for the Vanderbilt Commodores, leaving the Blazers behind.

Quinn Retney (HC) of the UMass Minutemen
        Season Review

Quinn Retney led his team to four wins, tying all they've had in their existence in the FBS level. Many expected his lone victory to be in the matchup against the FCS program, but adding victories against Purdue, Connecticut and Memphis bumped that win total up three games over par. An accomplishment in it's own right. The Minutemen didn't seem ready to make this level of a leap, but next year the goal will be a bowl game, a 6-6 record would be tremendous.

Their best victory came against the Purdue Boilermakers. The Boilermakers rolled into the matchup undefeated and two touchdown favorites over the 1-4 Minutemen. The Boilermakers wouldn't survive undefeated, falling 27-25 to give the Minutemen their second victory and first against a FBS program under Quinn Retney. Their worst loss came in week 9. After fighting three good teams tight (also getting beat up upon by the Demon Deacons), they dropped a total egg against the Virginia Cavaliers. The Cavaliers would go on to finish #113 in the polls, despite this they managed to destroy the Minutemen 7-38. A tough loss for this team to stomach, especially so against the level of competition.

Rufus Fagan would be the teams offensive player of the year. A shocking matter given he wasn't a starter, he stepped in tremendously for injured starter David Gray and definitely opens up the opportunity for a dual headed threat out of the backfield for Coach Quinn next season. Being able to bounce between his two backs will help keep the offense fresh. The defensive player of the game would belong to defensive end Sha Ki Hlines, the fifth year senior piled up 69 tackles, 18 in the backfield (team high), with 5.5 sacks (T-1) and a pass deflection off the end position. His presence will be missed for next season.

Coach Retney opted to accept a six season extension with the Minutemen after the conclusion of the season. The contract gives him ample time to turn this team into a contender in the American, and it's appearing they may be close to turning the corner.

John Valkyrie (HC) of the UL-Monroe Warhawks
          Season Review

Valkyrie took over a ULM program that had just went 3-9 in consecutive seasons and hasn't passed six victories in the past four. His challenge was there and it appears he still has room to grow. His defense just wasn't there, while his offense managed yardage but had some issues scoring, especially so in critical junctions in the game.

The best victory for this squad was when they brought the UAB Blazers to their home stadium and proceeded to lay a smackdown on the Blazers. The Blazers bounced back in a big way from this victory for the Warhawks, while the Warhawks would simply fall apart and not do as much following. Two three game losing streaks spoiled the Warhawks hopes. Thier worst loss came against the Troy Trojans. The Trojans were in the bottom six teams in the country and to lose by a pair of touchdowns is just embarrassing, Valkyrie did seem to learn from it and won a rout the following week over Old Dominion.

The offensive player of the year belongs to quarterback Anthony Monken, Monken completed under 50% of his passes, but tossed for 3400 yards and added 31 touchdown passes to 14 interceptions. Ryan Faulk wasn't goo in relief, throwing 2 interceptions, completing just a third of his passes. Defensively, it would be Jacob Tyson (DE) coming up huge for the Warhawks with 7.5 sacks and 64 tackles.

National Signing Day - Recruit Wrap Up
                Part 1

The fax machines have gone silent, the airwaves are buzzing and the hats have been donned. The annual national signing day for college football has reached it's climax and our top prospects will be sectioning off to their schools of choice. Before taking a look at Utah State followed by our other coaches, let's take a look at our top ten prospects in the country.

In a stunning development, the top prospect in the nation has spurred both Oklahoma and Kansas(?) in order to take on the opportunity to play with head coach Quinn Retney, and the UMass Minutemen. It's very likely that he will start from day one with a wide array of talents, this athlete will see a lot of utility in the offense or defense, wherever Coach Retney decides to position him. The 5* Athlete hails from Lewisville, Texas.

The second prospect, 5* athlete Matt Lee, from Vineland, New Jersey has chosen to play for the Colorado State Rams. The Rams beat out the UCLA Bruins and East Carolina Pirates for the prospects services. Lee looks most capable at defense in the secondary or wide out at the collegiate level for the Rams.

The third prospect and the top wideout, 5* Scott Williams from Oak Creek Wisconsin will be playing quite far from home, not even considering Wisconsin, the wideout picked Virginia Tech over Pittsburgh and UAB. With decent speed, his skillset lies mostly in breaking off the point of attack and beating the defender there. He is a decent route runner and won't be afraid to make catches over the middle.

The fourth prospect, 5* wide receiver Keith Kennedy from Nederland, Texas will be a regular in Provo, as he has signed his letter of intent to play for Tyler Kozlov and the Utah State Aggies, further solidifying an already strong wide receiver corp. A tremendous addition for this team, he likely won't start due to depth but he will either get a redshirt year or a good spot in the slot.

The next wide receiver will be joining the Big 12 as well, from Overland, Missouri is Mike Austin. Austin chose Oklahoma over Missouri and Tennessee, opting for the Big 12 over the SEC and his home state's program. He has average speed for the wideout possession but he isn't afraid of contact and has sure hands.

Ohio State comes on the board with Nick Christensen out of Tallahassee, Florida. Christensen, an athlete by trade will look to be a wide receiver or quarterback at the college level. In all likelihood, the Buckeyes will slot him at wide out, he has good hands and would make an impact sooner on the football field than at quarterback, another option for him would be cornerback, as he is a decent man to man cover corner, but cannot play zone very well.

Turning South, the Clemson Tigers received a fax from Chad Livingston, the Florida native chose Clemson over Kentucky and Texas Tech choosing to try and bring the Tigers over the hump that has ailed them in recent years. His skill set figures him to either be a corner, safety or halfback. He played both halfback and safety in high school and is good enough on both sides that he could be moved to either.

The top true ranked halfback in this years recruiting class will be a Longhorn. Shawn Wilson of Cedar Hill, Texas stated that he grew up a Longhorn fan, raised by Longhorn fans, so when the scholarship was offered it was a trivial decision. Wilson will look to join a solid list of Texas backs as the program still seeks to re-emerge in it's former greatness.

We are Marshall! Derek Mitchell will be making that cry as the Dyersburg, TN native has sent his fax to the University of Marshall. Good speed and solid offensive skills has him as a wide receiver, that is where he is most refined and could be an impact right away. He played some corner in high school but was usually a nickel corner or a reserve corner to rest the starters.

Finally, the Midwest gets another representative. Ronald Wilkerson of Roseville, MI will stay out of the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry and instead will travel to Southbend, the top ranked defensive end in the recruiting class has signed with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, great speed, strength and ability to read plays make it a possibility for him to start early in his career.

                  Utah State Recruiting Class

The Utah State Aggies saw Tyler Kozlov reel in the sixth ranked recruiting class in this years recruiting season. With 154 points, they fell by ten points to the Virginia Tech Hokies for the next best in class. The Gators were ultimately ranked the top class this year thanks to their 14 4* recruits that will provide a tremendous level of depth. Oklahoma had the highest ranked recruiting class in the Big 12.

The Aggies got a tremendous amount of talent to be injected into their ranks this off season. Three five stars will join the squad, Keith Kennedy (previously mentioned), Steve Larson and Teofilo Outlaw all join the fold.

Steve Larson, an athlete will look to be joining the secondary. The Hawai'i native has the ability to slot himself at halfback or in the secondary and the decision to shuffle him to the defense is quite easy. There is a good amount of depth at the halfback position, the Aggies signed three in this class alone, including 4* Damarcus Jackson and 3* Brian Lawson and the previously mentioned Teofilo Outlaw.

Joey Tucker was considered overrated by many as the season drew on and his play didn't impress much at the high school level, the four star prospect chose Utah State over Washington and Oklahoma and will likely take a redshirt year.

Ropati Pitotua joins the Aggies and is a tremendous boon, after signing his letter of intent, his play skyrocketed and many saw him as a sleeper pick in this years recruiting blitz. He could figure to start right off the bat for a weak offensive line.

The team also added four wide receivers, addressing the steep drop off between talent in the receiving corp, with several walk ons, the walk ons can be relegated to practice squad duties.

Another player the Aggies are excited for is Wynne Archer, Archer could start from day one at an outside linebacker position, and he is a tremendous talent. His athletic skill level is off the charts and while the knowledge of the game is raw, his pure ability should be enough to make some vulnerabilities.

Wow! What a season for Coach Warby and UAB! To beat BYU in a bowl? That's incredible. I admit I am a little sad that he wont be returning to see if they can capitalize on that but Vanderbilt should be a fun challenge. Bringing the Air Raid to the SEC!

You got a pretty incredible recruiting class for having such a down year. A lot of those recruits might be able to play this coming season. It'd be interesting to see how Coach Kozlov can rebound with guys that he recruited.

I saw the offer come around and the team on paper is solid, may be a difficult year or two in the SEC to start, but it definitely sets up Coach Warby close to his stomping grounds with a Power 5 school! Oddly no other coaches really got any offers, aside from lateral moves or Kozlov receiving offers to three different MAC Schools.

Theo Peterson was the lone bright force of this unit when Damian Hobbs went out early in the season, Peterson helped give the offense the identity it had lost and made a few interesting games. While many considered him the favorite to win the job, freshman Erich DiStefano has seemingly usurped him at that position. DiStefano was a 3 star prospect that came in for fall camp and absolutely dominated for the scout team, shooting up the ranks from third to first, giving a slim edge to him over Theo Peterson. Coach Kozlov loves the idea of having DiStefano be a potential four year starter, and feels more confident with the quarterback situation this year, rather than last year. DiStefano has high mobility and a cannon for an arm, his pass accuracy isn't the best, but that will come with time. Recruiting services tabbed him "a poor mans Mike Vick."

Brian Lawson (FR) 5'9 215 LBS 65 OVR

This unit is seeing a lot of turnover from last year into this year and losing LaJuan Hunt won't be easy, as well as losing Kennedy Williams. Justen Hervey carried the ball just 7 times last year and hasn't scored a touchdown since the year before. Hervey edged out highly touted prospect Teofilo Outlaw who will see a lot of playing time on the offensive end regardless. Expect with a better offensive line this year that this group seeks out an identity of their own. Brian Lawson will watch from the sidelines this year with a clipboard.

                            Isaac Minor (RS-SR) 6'3 242 LBS 60 OVR

As said before, fullbacks are rarely utilized in Tyler Kozlov's offense and that will continue to be true, Keith Smith is a solid option at the position but don't expect much playing time for the sophomore, while Isaac Minor will play special teams and contribute very rarely to this offense.

                            1 Rec 5 ReYds

This group brings about a very talented three deep and depth to contest with the best cornerback groups in the country, while Jesse Gipson and Cedric Wright are still a year away from being elite, this group is very strong and with Erich DiStefano's arm strength, and hopefully a better showing from the quarterbacks this season, this group should be heavily talked about, James Daugherty and Clinton McKinley will take a spot on the bench this season with all of the depth to burn their redshirt seasons. Antonio Moses remains a contingency plan, catching just one pass last year, he may be flexed over to tight end if used at all this season. Expect to see Teofilo Outlaw fill the five deep as well, Outlaw is the second string halfback but the coaching staff wants to keep the ball in his hands as much as possible.

                            Tight Ends
                            Marcus Mosely (RS-SR)
                            6'4 223 LBS 91 OVR

Terrance Jackson (SO) 6'5 233 LBS 60 OVR

Mosely doesn't get much recognition, but he could quietly be one of the best tight ends in the country. Mosely has great hands at the tight end position and adds good blocking skills to the mix as well. He will likely hear his name called in the draft, especially so if he can get on the field as a target. He was reliable last year in an aerial attack that was anything but reliable. If he can make that next leap, he will be NFL bound in no time! No other tight end has any stats, and Jackson will be used rarely, in situations where Mosely is too tired, or a rare multi-tight end set.

A lot of turnover at the tackle position with only Hakim Clarke even having suited up for this team last season. Clarke didn't get on the field very much and his usefulness will be stressed in his versatility where he will be backing up both tackle positions.

                                Guards

                                Left:
Fred Beck (JR) 6'6 314 LBS 90 OVR

Jeff Thomas (SO) 6'7 307 LBS 61 OVR

The guards will be the strong point of this offense, Fred Beck has NFL aspirations while Parks is a good guard that will be able to help with the blitz packages found in the Big 12, Beck is the star of this offensive line while Tyler Burton will provide backup work to both sides of this offensive line.

                                Centers:
                                Earl Brown (SO)
                                6'3 312 LBS 72 OVR
David Callahan (FR) 6'4 257 LBS 70 OVR

New centers in the middle, Earl Brown will have a lot of learning to do in the middle of this offense, while David Callahan will work from the bench all season as he utilizes his red shirt as are several members of this offensive line.

Andrew Chambers returns after a good season a year ago and a year of work in the weight room has turned him into an even better player. While he is another one that is a year out from being great, the Aggies need him to contribute to his best ability as soon as possible. On the flip side, highly touted record Mark Anderson steps in on the right side, Anderson hopes to one day be a force and experts peg him as a potential NFL talent already. One of the better players in this past seasons recruiting class.

                                Tom Freund (RS-FR) 6'3 317 LBS 66 OVR

There is a lot of depth now, especially with the team adopting a full time 3-4 defense. Chase Armstrong is an above average option at the interior tackle, while Jaymond Bolden will be his primary back up as well. Reggie Young may be used in flex time or goal line formations but his playing time will be limited.
