Re: The Legacy of Tyler Kozlov

Damion Bain scores two touchdowns but Zips cannot overcome injuries, fall to Flashes

This was going to be another opportunity for the Akron Zips to claim their rivalry victory while simultaneously eliminating their rival from a post season birth and pave the way to a potential MAC Championship. What a difference sixty minutes makes. Going into this game, the future was quite bright and the present was two victories from the Zips playing for the MAC Title.

    It wasn't meant to be.

The Akron Zips who were already down to just two halfbacks after Tra Ingram's abdominal tear earlier in the season were knocked to just one in the first quarter after Connor Hundley left with a concussion, following a jarring hit. He was responsive on the sidelines but was kept out as a precaution and will undergo further evaluations in the upcoming week before he will take the field again. This injury hurts bad, while Hundley who was once the original starter, hasn't been spectacular, it leaves the team with just one active halfback for this one and potentially against Bowling Green State.

The Zips first drive which spanned half of the first frame would lead to a punt, after getting deep into Flashes territory, the away team was forced to punt it away after consecutive sacks knocked them outside of Tom O'Leary's range and the offense would sputter.

The teams would trade possessions with the Zips usually gaining some ground before having to punt while the Flashes were just generally incompetent on offense, the Zips defense showing up strong for this performance for a second straight week.

It would take until the second quarter, for the Zips to score and even then tragedy struck. Running a read option, Chandler Kincade picked up 11 but took a bad shot and would leave the game, it would later be revealed to be a shoulder injury, one that took him out of this one but would be evaluated on a week to week basis, it's unknown if he will be active for the Zips game versus the Falcons. Kyle Pohl would throw two incompletions and a rush would end the drive and set up a field goal to make it 3-0 heading into the half.

The third quarter belonged to the Kent State Golden Flashes who put the Zips on the ropes and with their injuries it seemed that their two touchdowns in the quarter would close out this one, but the Zips managed to fight back despite the adversity.

Kent State managed to score late in the third when their offense churned out on a tired Akron defense that saw the field more often without their starting quarterback and top two halfbacks on the field, and it led to the Golden Flashes first touchdown of the evening when a sweep to the leftside led to their halfback going untouched for the score to make it a 3-7 score.

On the following drive, Kyle Pohl seemingly returned to his old ways with an interception deep in his own territory quickly had the Zips defense on the ropes for a second consecutive time and the Golden Flashes rush attack churned out another touchdown shortly after, a quick minute of scoring led to a sudden 3-14 barrage.

The Zips next drive took a little to get going, as a pair of offensive plays went no where before the Zips picked up a first down on third and long. On the first down play, Damion Bain took a hand off to the right side and followed his blockers, the freshman took off and went 81 yards for the score to make it a 9-14 in quick succession and the momentum returned to the Zips who managed to bring it close.

Utilizing the momentum, Tyler Kozlov kept his offense in for the two point conversion, on an improvised bootleg, Kyle Pohl caught a defensive back cheat up and laced a soft lob to Andrew Pratt, his first of three key receptions in the final frame. The score 11-14 and the Zips were in business.

The offense however just couldn't muster enough to keep that momentum through much of the 4th, at least until there was a little bit of magic, on second and 3, the Zips opted to test the long ball, Kyle Pohl shot a pass to Jeff Parker on a deep fly route, but the ball would be popped up. Andrew Pratt managed to swoop and pull in the reception in full speed and charged upfield, making it all the way to the three before being tackled. It took just one play for Damion Bain to punch the score in and with just a minute to go, the Zips had a 18-14 lead and it appeared that they would be able to escape this one with a victory.

It wouldn't be the case however, on the kickoff, Kent State saw excellent blocking and their return man hit the crease, going for a 95 yard touchdown just a play after the Zips made the improbable score. The Flashes had the lead yet again.

It seemed there was a little bit of magic left for Akron however, on third and long, the Zips Kyle Pohl shot a pass to Andrew Pratt who reeled it in within field goal range, with twenty seconds to go, and the hurry up was on. Without any time outs, Kyle Pohl wanted to get the ball closer and found Fransohn Bickley in the flat, but the referee ruled his knee went down prior to going out of bounds, and the clock would tick.

4.3.2.1.. and despite being in field goal position, the Zips had to go for the win, with no time on the clock, Kyle Pohl called for the snap and dropped back, flying a pass to Jeff Parker, but it would be batted down innocently and the Zips would fall to their rivals who stormed the field after holding off their opposition.

"This is on me, bad clock management in those final seconds.. it hurts. We had this one and we know who the better team is. They made plays when it mattered and because of it, they get the Wagon Wheel and we lost our shot at the conference title." Spoke a deflated Kyle Pohl, who didn't do much to silence his critics in this defeat, with an inefficient performance, his yardage totals bloated due to two amazing receptions by Andrew Pratt that piled up the yardage.

The Zips fall to 7-4 and with a bevy of injuries, the excitement for the post season has dulled substantially. The Kent State Golden Flashes keep their post season hopes alive with a 5-6 record.

      Week 13 Review

Down goes another national title contender.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are the latest casualty on the race for the national title and the two undefeated teams slide in to 1 and 2 respectively as both seek for the opportunity to claim a national title. The Golden Gophers ran into a road block in East Lansing where the Michigan State Spartans led by Connor Cook (4 TD) whipped the Gophers and returned to the polls, the Spartans had a very disappointing season where they started as potential title contenders with a heisman candidate under center to be a struggling squad that was looking for it's identity.

The loss allowed Brigham Young to climb into the second slot and this team's offense just continues to look deadlier as the weeks go on, with a back field spearheaded by heisman candidates Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams, it's obvious that this team has some serious talent going on, whether it's enough to lead them to a title has yet to be seen but they are on the fringe of a championship birth, and following their 28-3 victory over Air Force, it's definitely got to be impacting the players mentalities.

Texas Christian just continues to mount up their victories, with the Horned Frogs piling up 58 points versus the Big 12 new comers in Utah State. The Aggies didn't know what hit them in this one, meeting the train wreck that was the Frogs defense, who forced four turnovers on top of piling up 400 offensive yards to claim a dominating victory.

Looking at the Georgia Bulldogs, any hopes of a shot at the title were wrecked this week along with the hopes of halfback Todd Gurley to win the heisman. For the first time in over two years, the halfback was not listed as a top five candidate. He had just 32 yards and no scores against an unranked Kentucky Wildcats squad who claimed a win with a 17-10 decision.

Bowling Green stunned by Zips; give up 5 turnovers

It's not often that the Zips are a turnover force, especially with them being a young team but five turnovers gave the Zips enough fodder to vanquish the MAC East champions in Bowling Green State. The Falcons have disappointed this season, taking a step back despite the offense being considered among the best in the NCAA, while they cannot be held entirely to blame for their clunker in this one.

Travis Greene left the game in the second quarter with over 60 yards on the ground on just seven carries, without their top halfback and their quarterback Matt Johnson struggling mightily in this one, the Zips capitalized on turnovers to escape with the victory in this one.

Kyle Pohl returned to his normal self with 4 interceptions, but even despite his four, the team lead the turnover differential, and with the Zips four turnovers, there was just 7 points scored. While the Zips? Had 27 points come off turnovers, with just one drive not leading to a score from a turnover, it actually led to a Kyle Pohl interception.

None expected the Zips to be overly competitive after last week's deflating loss and without their suddenly "star" quarterback held out due to precautions and this game essentially being "null" without a shot at the MAC Championship and with bowl eligibility already in tow, the Zips expected to coast to a season concluding loss, at least that's what it seemed like heading in.

The Zips however came out with a chip on their shoulder, and they smothered the Falcons on every attempt they could, an interception in the first quarter set the Zips up in good field position and Connor Hundley punched the ball in up the middle for a touchdown setting up an early lead.

Trading possessions led to Bowling Green finally getting a break when Gehrig Dieter broke free on a route and managed to go untouched for a huge 62 yard touchdown reception that tied the score at seven a piece and kept the game from getting out of hand early despite major offensive deficiencies. Akron would answer their own following a long drive that saw them push the ball downfield, on third and goal, Connor Hundley would drive over the pile only to have the ball knocked loose. Kyle Pohl dived onto the loose ball scoring the go ahead touchdown after a brief moment of tension.

The Zips carried their 14-7 lead into the second half, and on their third drive of the frame after a timely interception, the Zips ran a play action boot leg that saw Jeff Parker get separation and a clean pass later the score board lit up again in favor of the home side, a 21-7 lead persisted into the final frame where 23 points would be scored.

Once again Akron would score in the fourth as a slant route to Jeff Parker would suddenly turn into six when he followed some terrific downfield blocking and carved his way through the opposition for an easy score. The game would suddenly become 27-7 after the missed extra point and the rout was on. Bowling Green took a long drive to get a touchdown, moving the ball slowly but steadily to score a touchdown on a Frank Coppet touchdown rush just outside of two minutes.

The onside kick would bounce harmlessly to the Zips, who after three quick plays would knock in a long field goal try and 30-14 would appear to be the end score. The Zips defense however would cave and yield yards to the Falcons, and inside the redzone, Akron defender Bryce Cheek would jump a route and pull in the interception, racing downfield for a NCAA record 99 yard interception return as the score jumped out to 37-14.

The game ended shortly after and the Zips season ended at 8-4, they are held out of the MAC Championship game due to the Falcons have one more conference victory than the Zips, but they have a lot of positives to move forward with following this season. They will gear up for a bowl game and hopefully the first victory in the history of the program in the post season.

            Week 14 Review

A college season that has had upsets across the board and now sees one of it's preseason favorites at #24 and countless others scattered across the terrain, the final week of the regular season ended without much fireworks. The upsets were kept fairly in check, with the Crimson Tide being the only team to truly be upset in the rankings this week.

There was movement, as the Florida Gators fell victim to the Florida State Seminoles causing the Seminoles to leapfrog the Notre Dame Fighting Irish into the #3 slot. The Seminoles demolished the SEC East champions in a 35-13 victory that ended the regular season a high note for one squad and spiraled another into uncertainty as the regular season concludes.

The Alabama Crimson Tide nearly fell from the rankings as the Auburn Tigers claimed victory over their hated rivals from Tuscaloosa with a 27-20 victory on Saturday evening. The reigning champions played themselves out of a shot to defend their title in the final weeks of the season with a poor record and poor performances across the board.

Brigham Young survived a scare from the Wyoming Cowboys who rallied from a 26-3 deficit in the third to score 17 unanswered and nearly knock the Cougars well out of championship contention, the Cougars defense held strong despite Taysom Hill's four interceptions and the Cougars will have to best the Fresno State Bulldogs to claim the Mountain West and a shot at the title.

              vs
Analysis: In this battle of ACC squads, the two teams have yet to face eachother on the season but have received a lot of flak for their strength of schedule which each features just a single victory against a ranked squad, as the ACC essentially knocked themselves out of the polls on a weekly basis. The Florida State Seminoles are led at the helm by "Famous" Jameis Winston. Winston who has spurred the NFL in hopes of winning a championship with his Seminoles is having a solid season where has has passed for 2684 yards and 29 touchdowns. Joining him in the backfield is Dalvin Cook, Cook is just shy of 1000 rushing yards on the season and is aiming to break that mark, with his 5.3 YPC he is a work horse out of the backfield and should spell difficulties for the Georgia Tech defense. Georgia Tech has been a little less methodical in its approach this season deviating somewhat from the triple option as their quarterback has been spectacular, Justin Thomas has thrown for just shy of 2000 passing yards on the season but has 17 passing touchdowns to just one interception. When he has thrown he has been accurate, effective and dominant. Broderick Snoddy has been strong in the option none the less, going for 1270 yards and a 5.2 YPC average on the season and he hopes to come closer to the 1500 rushing yard mark with this game and the bowl game. In a bit of a shock, wide out Qua Searcy has been dominant in the passing game with 74 catches for 959 yards and 11 touchdowns, including just coming off a game where he had 16 receptions and 160 yards. He has been getting better as the season has gone on and has quietly been one of the best wideouts in the nation. Florida State is a touchdown favorite in this contest.

              vs
Analysis: Marshall's inclusion in the inaugural American championship surprises no one, what is surprising is that two newcomers take the stage for the conference's first as NIU and Marshall meet for a rematch of their October matchup that saw Marshall win 38-31 in a tight contest. Marshall has had an impressive season going 11-1 on the season and running the table in conference play, in fact their lone loss was against a scrappy Akron squad on the first game of the year. Gunner Holcombe has had a good season under center but the team has been struggling offensively as of late, and even wide out Angelo Jean-Louis who has eclipsed 1000 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns has only accounted for 88 yards in the past two games. They will have to improve to take on the Huskies in this one. The Northern Illinois attack is predicated upon a strong rush attack that takes pressure off the passing attack. Drew Hare has just 1624 passing yards on the year with a 10 touchdown to 8 interception (5:4) ratio and Juwan Brescacin is a big part of that with his 61 (50%) receptions and 849 (~55%) receiving yards, he his a big part of this offensive attack and is coming off a performance where he tossed for 151 yards. Drew Hare returns from injury in this one, but they will be without top halfback Joel Bouganon who has a strained hamstring and will be out until the Huskies bowl game. Marshall should be able to take care of the Huskies who will be without their best offensive player. They are a two touchdown favorite with injuries factored in.

              vs
Analysis: Bring on the abnormal B1G championship that features none of the consistent faces instead vying Minnesota against Nebraska in a game that actually could have very serious national implications. Eyes will be focused on this one as the two teams do battle. Tommy Armstrong Jr. leads the Huskers on field against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Armstrong has had an up and down season including terrible performances against Iowa State (4 INT) and Northwestern (100 PaYds 3 INT) that has hindered the Huskers runs this season. Imani Cross has been the stable work horse of the team all year, with 11 touchdowns and over 1000 rushing yards and a 5.6 YPC average, he has been a force. Minnesota is carried by their running back on offense, Rodrick Williams has rushed for 1356 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season to spur an offense that hasn't had much other highlights. Both teams are carried by their defenses and it will continue in this one, can Minnesota contain Tommy Armstrong? Can Nebraska stop Rodrick Williams? Projections have Minnesota claiming a 3 point victory.

              vs
Analysis: Texas Christian comes into this game as the unanimous top selection for the BCS with a season where they have had only one game be decided by a score less than 17, a Baylor 36-33 victory that propelled the Horned Frogs. TCU has been absolutely dominant all year long and their dominance. While Oklahoma figures to be more comparable to Baylor than Oklahoma, not much is expected of the Sooners. Trevone Boykin has 3053 passing yards with 33 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while Aaron Green has 1088 yards on the ground with 12 more touchdowns, this is a team that can beat you through the air and on the ground and that's part of what makes them so deadly. Kolby Listenbee has had a tremendous season as well with 1002 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on the year. Oddly on a team defined by it's defense, the offense has been huge, not to tear down what the defense has accomplished this year either. Holding 9 opponents to 17 PPG or less, when your offense is averaging 43, it spells a championship year. Looking at Oklahoma, they've had chances to make a name for themselves but always manage to fall just short. A season opening overtime defeat to a 4-8 Tennessee squad comes to mind, than after coming off a huge run through the B12, they drop a 31-38 defeat to the Iowa State Cyclones (ahem Nebraska). The Sooners are a team that feel a year away from being where they want to be. Which has been an annual feeling for the Sooners as of late. Trevor Knight has had a great season for the Sooners leading the team in the air (3380 yards, 29 TD 11 INT) and on the ground (714 yards 8 TD), Knight has been a trouble for the opposing defenses, while Dorial Green-Beckham has been tremendous in the passing game with 1045 yards and 8 touchdowns. The Sooners have a good defense, but it still fails in comparison to the Horned Frogs. The #1 Offense (TCU) will battle the #43 Defense (OU), while the #4 Offense (OU) will take the field against the #6 Defense (TCU). Unless there is a major upset, it's clear who wins this one. Texas Christian comes in as a ten point favorite.

              vs
Analysis: How many people had Army in this championship game? Exactly. Army is a team that plays with a lot of passion and tears apart teams from a punishing option attack, but their defense and lack of flexibility leaves a lot to be desired. Tulsa on the opposite end boasts an average (#59) defense while utilizing the #19 offense in the country. Joseph Calcagni has been up and down all year but has come on later in the season, the quarterback has tossed for 1486 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year but has been accident prone in bigger contests (7 of 11 INT's coming in just two games). In the backfield, James Flanders is a power out of the backfield and has been keeping the Golden Hurricane out of trouble when Calcagni hasn't been able to step up. On the opposite end, this offense lives and dies by AJ Schurr, Schurr has tossed for 1841 yards and 16 touchdowns through the air and added 1000 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. Sadly the Army squad just won't have enough talent to overcome Tulsa. This rematch will end the same way the original match ended, an Army defeat. Tulsa is a two touchdown favorite.

              vs
Analysis: In the first matchup between these two teams of the year, Indiana is riding high in their first season of MACtion, with an inaugural shot at the conference championship in a weak West conference. The Hoosiers have been strong throughout despite an early season conference loss to Buffalo, they have yet to look back since. Tevin Coleman has stepped up in the ways they had hoped he would, piling up 1151 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns this season. With Coleman getting the defenses attention, Nate Boudreau tossed 2277 yards and 16 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions. On the opposite end, the Bowling Green State Falcons stumbled into the championship game following an upset to the Akron Zips in the season finale, Travis Greene returns from injury and that cannot be understated, his 1470 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns were sorely missed in the previous affair but they need him to return to form if this team has a shot at victory. Matt Johnson will also need to play like he did prior to the Akron game (4 INT), he had 23 touchdowns to 4 interceptions going in. The Falcons were supposed to have an elite offense and while Travis Greene has done everything he could to earn that title the passing attack has left a lot to be desired.

              vs
Analysis: The Mountain West features the #2 ranked Cougars battling the Fresno State Bulldogs, a matchup the Cougars have already won (32-25) earlier in the year. The Cougars haven't been winning big accross the board. They have typically been playing down to their opponents levels and it's shown in several close contacts between other opponents that they should be tearing apart. Even so, the Cougars concluded the regular season undefeated and are a win away from a shot at the national title. The matchup against Fresno State should further solidfied Taysom Hill's heisman candidacy while cement their birth into the national championship game. The Bulldogs put up a fight in the previous matchup, it's not expected that the Cougars will let the Bulldogs keep them from Texas Christian in the championship game.

              vs
Analysis: The Cardinal ran the gaunlet and finished their season nearly an entire month before the rest of collegiate football had. The Cardinal fought hard and pushed their way to a 10-2 record just managing to slip past Oregon, including their 21-20 victory over the aforementioned team. This is the second time the Cardinal and Trojans will face off, the Cardinal played the Trojans back on November 15th and fell in a 28-38 loss. The Cardinal are sitting pretty at #5 and once had heisman candidates in quarterback Eric Crower (2456 PaYds 25 TD 4 INT) and halfback Chris McCaffrey (1088 RuYds 10 TD). Neither has lived up to the early season hype that had generated after coming out of the gates on an absolute tear. Even so, this team is dangerous offensively and coming out of the backfield, this team can be a serious force to be reckoned with. The same can be said for the team lining up across from them. The Trojans are a team mired in their inability to hold onto their top position. They have quality wins over Stanford and Oregon, but brutal losses to (3-9) Utah and (8-4) Arizona, and a tight 2 point loss to #4 Notre Dame. Can the Trojans led by Cody Kessler finally make that leap and get back into a BCS Bowl? At #17 they won't be thinking the title game, even so, a BCS bowl would be a major concession for this team, and keeping Stanford out of a potential title birth would definitely be a sweet concession for the Trojans. USC by 4.

              vs
Analysis: In the inaugural Sunbelt Championship, New Mexico State battles a ranked Western Kentucky squad. Western Kentucky earned the conferences first ever ranking and sitting at #21 they look to end the season winning out. Led by Nelson Fishback undercenter, he tossed for 2448 yards and 22 touchdowns with 17 interceptions, Leon Allen added 1127 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns for a Western Kentucky squad looking to cement itself in the history of the Sunbelt, or even seek promotion. New Mexico State is led by gunslinger, Tyler Rogers tossed for 2166 passing yards with a 19 touchdown to just 6 interception ratio, he has been the force this offense has eneded and has carried the Aggies almost singlehandedly to a 8-1 season. The last time these two teams met, it was a 10-31 rout in favor of Western Kentucky, they hope to change that in the championship game, but experts feel the Hilltoppers are just too good. Western Kentucky by 10.

              vs
Analysis: Florida tore through the SEC East this season, beating all but oddly Tennessee (4-8) and Kentucky (7-5). The Gators beat just about every team they weren't supposed to and lost to the teams that shouldn't of been close. Even so, this team despite injuries to it's young offense is way ahead of schedule. Treon Harris had a rough first campaign, completing under 50% of his passes for barely 1000 yards (1010) with 8 touchdowns to 9 interceptions, even so his legs put his team in a position to win, and that is all the Gators needed. Matt Jones has been a force on first and second down with 1182 rushing yards but a low touchdown total (6) has shown his reliance has been minimized in scoring positions. Dante Fowler Jr. leads this daunting Gator defense that has been towards the top of the league and hopes to punish the Aggies for another Gator's SEC Championship. Texas A&M finished with the SEC's best record at 10-2 and sits as their only shot at another title birth. Led by Kyle Allen who had a terrific season under center with 2214 yards and 27 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions he has had a solid campaign in a position that has been constantly compared to "Johnny Football" since the heisman winner left school to goto the NFL. Trey Williams is playing his heart out this year and keeping the pressure off Kyle Allen as he hopes to earn a NFL contract, a big game in the SEC Championship would do a lot for his stock. Texas A&M wins by 3.

The two questions above will help me in regards to taking promotions if your coach is offered them and where they would go in terms of region. If you only want your coach to coach Texas schools for example, go ahead and state that and I won't accept a promotion for any school outside of that. I'll make the CAC start at one of the lower schools that have a coordinator opening this offseason, CAP's will be put in to the recruiting pool starting next season.

Analysis is up, scores to follow!

CAC will be open for just a little bit longer so if you want in, make sure you get your application in! I'll be generating the coaches soon!

Just a note to those entered, most if not all of you will be entering as coordinators, only chance of not being a coordinator in the first stop is if a team in your selected region adds a game generated coach to be head coach.

                    Conference Championship Week Part 1:

                    def. Georgia Tech 21-14
Famous Jameis delivered the perfect pass when his team needed it the most. Jameis Winston was responsible for the team jumping out to an early lead especially so when the Seminoles offensive delivered two perfect play action passes in the first half for an early 14-0 lead in favor of the Seminoles. Both times connected to Eddie Lane for scores of 5 and 20 yards as the Seminole defense kept the high powered Georgia Tech offense in check, at least for three quarters. In the fourth the Yellow Jackets blew the game wide open with a pair of big drives that resulted in touchdown rushes for quarterback Justin Thomas who saw his passing prove largely ineffective, his rushing game was anything but, earning both of his scores on runs of 9 and 2 to conclude a 98 rushing yard day. Just outside of the two minute mark, Jameis Winston drove the Seminoles downfield and connected with tight end Jeremy Kerr for a huge 37 yard touchdown that would elevate the Seminoles in this one, shooting them up the rankings to #3.

                    def. Oklahoma 29-26
The Horned Frogs survive a scare in the conference championship game to clinch the top ranking in college football, Trevone Boykin helped propel this team which struggled early against an opportunistic Sooner side. The Sooners jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on a pair of option rushes, one scored by Joe Mixon from two yards out and the other by Trevor Knight also from two yards out as the Sooners ground game churned out hard earned yards. Kolby Listenbee would put the Horned Frogs on the board late in the first when he broke free from his defender and hauled in a brilliant pass for a touchdown. Oklahoma would add a pair of field goals to extend their lead to 20-7, but it would be short lived, a Trevor Knight pass would go errant on their next drive and be intercepted and brought back for the touchdown. A quick three and out and the Horned Frogs were back in business, a touchdown pass by Trevone Boykin shot the Horned Frogs past the Sooners, 21-20. Hopes were high for Texas Christian until midway through the quarter, Trevor Knight moved the Sooners down field before Trevor Knight connected with KJ Young for the go ahead touchdown, the two point would fail and the Horned Frogs were down 21-26 with five minutes to go. A long Texas Christian drive would be the answer and Alex Green would punch in the game winning touchdown with two minutes to go, the two point conversion would be converted and Texas Christian escaped with the victory.

                    def. Fresno State 38-35 OT
The overtime victory set the stage for the national championship game as BYU once again played down to their opponents level, Taysom Hill was largely kept in check throughout and the team lost their top halfback to injury early. Even despite this, the Cougars managed to claim victory despite an opponent that wanted to allow anything but a Cougar victory. They very nearly had it, with a touchdown pass early in the fourth that put the Bulldogs up on the Cougars 35-28, but allowing back up half back, Algernon Brown to score two touchdowns in the fourth including in the final minute to tie the score proved to be too much for the Bulldogs who fall to 7-6 on the season with the defeat.

                    def. Florida 40-35
Texas A&M very nearly allowed this game to slip away from them as the Gators kept an early consistent performance and punished the Aggies in the fourth quarter before allowing 9 unanswered to close out the victory for the Aggies. Matt Jones had a touchdown to open this games scoring but Texas A&M would rattle off 17 points unanswered, a pair of Kyle Allen touchdown passes and a long field goal to turn the game in favor of the Aggies 7-17. Treon Harris would get his Gators downfield and take an option keeper in for the score for the Gators second score and a 14-17 deficit into the half. Texas A&M would come out gunning once again as their offense churned out two rapid touchdowns before falling to the wayside, Trey Williams scoring on a 4 yard run and Kyle Allen tossing a third touchdown pass. Late in the third and into the fourth, the Gators scored 21 points in a span of four minutes, closing out the third with a touchdown pass from Treon Harris, Vernon Hargreaves would jump a Kyle Allen pass and bring it back 42 yards for the score and on the following Gator drive, Treon Harris once more sped down field before scoring a touchdown with his legs again for a six yard run. The Gators suddenly found themselves on top with a 35-31 lead. It would last until the final couple of minutes when Kyle Allen scored yet another touchdown on a long pass, than his defense added a safety on Treon Harris to close out the game and a 40-35 victory and SEC championship.

                      Conference Championship Week Part 2:

                      def. Northern Illinois 34-7
Gunner Holcombe delivered the victory to the Marshall Thundering Herd will excellent play throughout that capitalized what ended up being an easy victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies who ended up holding out Drew Hare, were also missing Matt McIntyre and were left starting a third string quarterback and second string halfback Keith Harris Jr. Harris would score a garbage time touchdown but Marshall jumped out early, with a quick 24 points through the mid to end of the first and the end of the first half. Gunner Holcombe ran in a touchdown and added one through the air as the Herd won easily. The Huskies dip to 8-5 on the season and finish just above .500 for American play.

                      def. Army 24-10
The score was a lot closer in this one throughout the entire game despite what the final had shown. The Golden Hurricane only broke it open in the fourth quarter after back up quarterback, Ryan Rubley came in in the first quarter, the offense would only score on a touchdown in the fourth quarter after he came in. James Flanders had an early touchdown but wasn't overly effective the rest of the way. Ryan Rubley put his own stamp on this victory by adding a touchdown on the ground to open up the fourth quarter, than one more through the air on the following Tulsa drove to blow the game wide open. The Army offense just didn't have much going for it and caved to the superior Tulsa defense, surprisingly however, Army's defense kept them in this one until the middle of the fourth frame.

                      def. Stanford 31-21
The Trojans outscored the entire Cardinal output in the first quarter alone thanks to a 21-0 spree to launch the game, afterwards both teams engaged in a tight back and forth affair that would've spelled a much closer game had the Trojans not jumped out to such a strong performance out of the gates, as Cody Kessler tossed two touchdowns in the first quarter and Javorious Allen punched in the ball on the goal line for the third touchdown of the early spree. Eric Crowder hooked up with Greg Taboada on a slant in the first quarter for a quick score to make it 7-21. Francis Owusu broke free on a fly route to make it a 14-21 game heading into the half with a slim deficit. One they would knot up to open the third when Eric Crower connected on his third touchdown after a terrific drive to open the half. The score would be knotted at 21, but USC would score on their next drive on a Cody Kessler touchdown pass to put the Trojans ahead for good. A field goal late in the fourth would be the final score of the game and put the Trojans ahead by ten as they claim the Pacific 12 title.

                        Conference Championship Week Part 3:

                        def. Minnesota 42-32
Maxx Williams played his heart out in this game scoring two touchdowns early in this contest with a 51 yard bomb as well as a short touchdown in the early part of the second quarter, it wouldn't be enough however, neither would Roderick William's second half contributions as the halfback pulled off two big touchdown runs in the second half. The William's duo accounted for 28 points, but the diversity of scoring options in the ground game for the Huskers proved to be too different for the team to manage. Four different rushers scored touchdowns for the Nebraska Cornhuskers while Tommy Armstrong added two more through the air, all in the second half as a contest once billed as a battle of the defenses ended up being an offensive scorefest between two top B1G squads.

                        def. Indiana 44-13
Bowling Green stepped up to preseason projections with their smashing of the opposing Indiana Hoosiers who came into the game ranked and holding high expectations. It all ended quickly, as Matt Johnson showed he put behind the previous game with a pair of touchdowns on two consecutive drives, both to Chris Gallon, one on the goal line and the other on a deep fly as the Hoosiers defense proved to be focus on Travis Greene, and once the Falcons began to return to the run? Travis Greene churned out 58 yards on a single drive before punching the ball in from three yards out to put the Falcons up 21-0, on the following drive Nate Bodreau lost control of the ball and fumbled it, scooped up by the Falcons who hustled the ball back into the end zone for another score and unloading a quick 28-0 lead. The Hoosiers would start to answer back, with a field goal, that followed with a long drive ending on a Tevin Coleman touchdown run on a pitch to the right side. Not to be outdone, the Falcons would knock in a field goal to close out the half with a 31-10 lead. It didn't get too much better in the second half, where they would be outscored 13-3 as the lead continued to grow, this time three field goals (2 BGSU, 1 IND) to make it 37-13 heading into the final frame, where Matt Johnson showed he wasn't entirely done, as he hooked up with Gehrig Dieter on a curl, the wide out spinning out his corner and going untouched for the score, the game ending 44-13 as the Falcons churn out their second MAC championship in three years.

                        def. Western Kentucky 14-9
The upset of the championship game round of action came in the Sunbelt where Western Kentucky was the clear favorite and a superior team heading in but just couldn't outplay the New Mexico State squad that wanted to silence pundits that have put the program down all year as they won their first ever Sunbelt championship to cap of a historical season for the program, making their first bowl game in over thirty years where they hope to pick up a victory. Larry Rose scored both of the Aggies touchdowns with a short pass on the flat for an early touchdown in the first quarter, with another coming early in the second this time on the ground as the runner picked up his second score of the day which would seal the victory for the Aggies.

                          Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Preview

                          vs

The Marshall Thundering Herd and the Akron Zips will meet in the Idaho Potato Bowl for the two squad's second matchup of the season. The early season matchup saw the Akron Zips escape with a victory over the Herd which would serve as the Herd's sole loss the entire season. Now the American champions have extra reason to fight throughout this one, the lone negative mark on their record stands in between them and a bowl victory. Both teams have undergone quite a bit of difference in the weeks that separated the two playing eachother.

Marshall has gotten more of an identity and grown more cohesive as the team developed unity in the wake of Rakeem Cato's graduation that previously had the Herd as a mid-major power, this team hasn't missed a beat following the loss of their heralded quarterback as Gunner Holcombe has made huge strides. Culminating in a thrashing of Northern Illinois in the American Championship game has this Marshall program riding high.

As for the Zips, they are coming in off a deflating victory over the MAC Champions in the Bowling Green State Falcons. The Zips were deflated solely on the fact that the previous week their loss eliminated them from the MAC race, when they very easily could've been MAC champions or at least a shot at that. The Zips head coach Tyler Kozlov picked up his first victory over a ranked squad by beating this squad.

Looking at injuries, the Zips have two of note, Chandler Kincade is recovering and is probable for the bowl matchup with the Herd. As for Tra Ingram, there was some hopes that the freshman halfback would be ready to suit up for the Zips but some complications with his recovery has almost completely ruled him out as he may require surgery when previously expected to not need it. Kincade's return is a major boon to this offense which has struggled under Kyle Pohl while has been deadly with Kincade at the helm.

Star right tackle, Clint Van Horn is questionable with a broken tibia for this game and the Thundering Herd could utilize him if he returns, it's unlikely that the senior will play as he has projected to be a NFL level talent and he wouldn't be willing to risk his career to play in this game, but it's possible. Without him, the right side of the line will definitely be weaker and a point of attack for the Zips.

The Zips are eying a shot at their first ever bowl victory, and a first for head coach Tyler Kozlov. While Marshall wants revenge for an early season loss and to further accentuate the team's strong season with a bowl victory.
