    Week 5 In Review

Down goes the reigning national champions sends them tumbling down the bottom of the rankings, their hopes of repeating are hanging on by a thread after a three point loss to the SMU Mustangs. The Fighting Irish spent the season playing down to their competition, and that didn't change when the unranked Syracuse Orange took care of the Fighting Irish by a late touchdown to put them away for good. Virginia Tech takes care of the Georgia Bulldogs, ending their undefeated season with a scoring spree to close out the game. Penn State might just be a little better than expected after upsetting the Northwestern Wildcats.

In the TCU game, the SMU Mustangs simply outright controlled this one, despite being two touchdown underdogs, the Mustangs dominated the time of possession battle and limited the offenses chances by limiting their time on the field, and in doing so escape with a victory in overtime to claim victory.

The Fighting Irish dropped an egg against the Orange, who would score 14 unanswered after falling behind 21-10 late in the third quarter, the Fighting Irish defense just couldn't keep it going and ended up falling. The Orange mustered out a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to stun the top ranked team in the country. The Irish fall 13 spots this week, out pacing the Horned Frogs 12 spot fall.

The Georgia Bulldogs were knocked off the ranks of the unbeaten by the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies have lived in the bottom part of the rankings and just outside of the rankings in recent years. The Bulldogs ground attack was ineffective and the Hokies routed the 'Dawgs.

Oregon and Penn State both notch quality wins, with Oregon knocking the Trojans from the polls with their victory by 21, impressively routing the Trojans who were helpless to stem the tide. Penn State came in a ten point underdog against the Wildcats who were on a tear to open the season. It didn't last long for the Wildcats, who fell to the undefeated Nittany Lions.

Brigham Young continues their regular season winning streak which has now transcended three seasons, the Cougars are a program establishing themselves as a force, and are poised to make another attempt at a national title game.

      Week 5 Coaching Recap

A week after two of our coaches picked up their first collegiate victories, they would once again be blanked, and in the case of two of the games it'd be ugly. John Valkyrie was the lone coach to escape the rout. His Red Wolves fought adamantly to the bitter end against an opportunistic Georgia State squad that took advantage of a pair of interceptions off his freshman quarterback to propel them to a 17-24 victory.

Out west, Eric Grant saw the Running Rebels beat up on the defense of his squad. Grant's offense actually had a decent game, but went 2-5 in the red zone and wasted a strong performance from their quarterback with red zone inefficiencies. Grant should get this team back on track, with a bye week he can definitely get his guys back on the same page and start churning out more victories.

Out north, the Massachusetts Minutemen were routed by the UCF Knights in a game they weren't expected to compete in. The offense continues to have it's struggles with one of the lowest outputs in the NCAA this season but this unit has been ravaged by offensive injuries, and being in the bottom of the defensive ranks isn't helping them. This is a team desperately in needed of a bye week to recover and reorient themselves, but they won't get that quite yet.

Defense spurs Zips past Broncos as they pick up crucial victory

How important was a victory on Saturday in Kalamazoo for the Akron Zips?

A loss would've put this team at 1-4 and staring at a 0-2 hole in the MAC East where one loss was enough to disqualify a team last season. While the East isn't as top oriented as the past couple of years, starting out in that hole isn't something the Zips wanted and could easily mean the difference between playing on conference championship Saturday or watching the games from home.

The Broncos came in with a strong offense and a good defensive showing through the young season and would prove to be yet another early season test in what has been a rigorous start to the season for the Akron Zips who has faced off against a pair of ranked squads and two of the top contenders in the MAC to open their season.

Zach Terrell was absolutely steamrolle din this one, sacked five times by a Zip defense that didn't allow the quarterback to do much of anything for most of the game as well as forcing three fumbles on an afternoon where neither offense was particularly spectacular butt one was more capable than the other.

The defense did a brilliant job setting the Zips up, the Zips scored 21 of their 28 off of turnovers and did so to claim a commanding victory over a team that some had penciled in as the favorite to win the West admist the early struggles posed by the Hoosiers.

The Zips offense wouldn't uncap their scoring until the second frame, after the teams spent their possessions punting the ball back and forth with the occasionally first down dotted to mix the scoring up a bit. It was Tom O'Leary who would strike first for the Zips, O'Leary sliced a 41 yard field goal just inside of the post to put the first score on the board.

After another series of exchanging punts, the Zips blew the game wide open when they blew up an option and scooped up the ball bringing it inside the Broncos twenty before being tackled. Leading to an offensive series culminating in J.T. Blyden rushing for 14 yards and ultimately punching it in from two out.

After the Broncos first possession in the second half went for yet another punt, the Zips managed to drive downfield after getting solid starting position and Tom O'Leary would knot through a second field goal, this one from 44 yards out. It was this drive that Darian Green left with an unknown shoulder injury and wouldn't return.

The Zips offense didn't yield to the clock at all, with a 13-0 lead heading into the late moments of the fourth quarter, the offense continued to attack and on third and goal after a forced fumble (on a sack, Zach Terrell would be stripped) the Zips Chandler Kincade sent a beautiful pass to Jeff Parker for the senior's only touchdown on the after noon.

The Broncos offense seemed to get a spark, either from the anger of the opposition still adding to the scoreboard or something just finally clicked. Either way the offense pushed the ball downfield quickly, and it was Zach Terrell finding Daniel Braverman wide open in the corner of the end zone for the only score on the afternoon for the Broncos whose offense was held under 175 yards.

On the onside kick, the ball was easily fielded by the Zips, whom needed a first down to kill the clock, with all three timeouts for the Broncos, they would goto churning out yardage, yet on a second and seven, J.T. Blyden took a sweep outside and followed his blockers and finding a seam he would go untouched for 41 yards, slowing near the goalline to burn the final seconds from the clock before crossing the plane for his second score.

"We don't stop fighting until the final whistle, it doesn't matter if we're behind, up, up by thirty, we will continue to keep striking until that whistle is blown. Teams don't just stop for us because its the nice thing to do, this is an athletic contest, if they don't want us to score, they can step up and shut us down. They didn't and we took care of business." Rather brash words from an outspoken Akron coach, Tyler Kozlov.

For your problem with the lines, I have a similar problem with my Galaxy tablet. I think backing away from the TV a bit should help.

I like the iPhone a bit better, but it can't keep up with the end of game screenshots I utilize.

I'll definitely have to try that, I do take the pictures close for the GIF's and such, maybe sitting back more and using the zoom will make a better picture, thanks for that idea! I've looked on Google and nothing has come up that'd work on my iPhone.

                Week Six Review

Florida State still reigns supreme but the number 2 program took a fall this week. There were quite a few upsets and defeats amongst the powers and Georgia is among those that fell in action this week.

Oregon has been getting wrecked by the B1G in recent years and naturally when people saw a revitalized Michigan program coming into Eugene ranked number 2 in the country, routs from the other B1G Michigan program came to mind, but for Oregon, putting the past to rest meant besting the Wolverines and they did, not just that but they did it in grand fashion by devastating the B1G leaders with a 37-14 rout, with over 500 offensive yards (Wolverines defense came in averaging 238 per game), the Quack Attack was in full force.

The Brigham Young Cougars saw their undefeated streak end at the hands of a 3-3 San Diego State program that will undoubtedly spell the end of their hopes of making a second consecutive national championship birth. Taysom Hill was held in check and the offense just couldn't get back to it's high octane levels as the Aztecs made short work of the Cougars.

The Volunteers took care of their southern neighbors to send them away with a second consecutive loss and threatening to knock them from the polls entirely in doing so, the Bulldogs couldn't compete with a tenacious Volunteer defense that refused to yield anything to their SEC Rival.

Northwestern took care of business to get back in their winning ways by besting the Wisconsin Badgers in a 29-10 game that saw the Wildcats start their ascent back up the polls after the tough loss to the Nittany Lions a week ago.

Virginia Tech got their ACC schedule rolling with a rout. The Hokies hung 49 on their ACC rivals in Pittsburgh, as the Panthers were entirely anemic on both ends of the ball as Beamer ball won the day for the Hokies whom allowed just 6 points all Saturday.

                  Coaching Update
                  Week 6

Another week and more losses at the table. No coach took on a good situation and this first year especially will be a trial in the coaches aptitude of handling adversity. As it's been said, the Massachusetts Minutemen were coming into the season with a cupboard bare, and injuries to their few key players hasn't helped matters, while the Arkansas State Red Wolves are bringing in three freshman signal callers and youth across the board.

The Minutemen were competitive with the South Florida Bulls for most of the game, but the fourth quarter is where things started to get more shady as the Massachusetts squad was unable to keep up with a 21 point scoring outburst that saw the Bulls pull away from a tired and beaten Massachusetts squad.

The Red Wolves just couldn't hold on as the Hilltoppers just outpaced them, a strong running performance from their halfback wouldn't be enough to save them today and Arkansas State with their youth at quarterback saw it's passing attack spell the end for them in this one, two interceptions and sub 150 passing yards.

Wyoming had the week off for rest and recovery as they dig in for the meat of their Mountain West schedule.

Zips survive Rocket's rally, Parker's three touchdowns lead Akron to overtime victory

The Akron Zips had drawn the Toledo Rockets at the wrong time, the Rockets have been in a tear as of late and have run through their in conference schedule undefeated to date and things are only going to improve for these Rockets who have tremendously blown away expectations by taking the MAC West lead in three MAC contests. They struggled as was expected outside of the MAC, with a winless record in out of conference contests, but their MAC spree speaks for itself.

They put up a huge fight to the Akron Zips as well but what surprised some was how well the defense held up, at least until the clutch time rolled around and the Akron Zips stepped up to claim victory past the Toledo Rockets, by scoring in the final second and being the lone team to get on the scoreboard in overtime.

The game started badly for the Zips, when an option rush would get blown up, and the pitch would bounce off J.T. Blyden's shoulder pad and be easily scooped up by John Stepec who would rumble for a touchdown, going untouched with no Zip within thirty yards to claim the touchdown that shot the Rockets past the Zips early.

Akron's offense didn't do much else in the first quarter, after running downfield prior to the error leading to the score for the Rockets, neither did the Rockets offense. It was the offense, when a play action pass saw Chandler Kincade lob a clean pass to Jeff Parker for a score to tie the game.

The Rockets however would score on a pair of field goals and a touchdown before the end of the half, their field goals of 34 and 39. The first coming early in the second period, while the second came after an interception set the Rockets up for a field goal before time expired to extend their lead. The Zips would manage to get their own touchdown and a brief lead, for the last time until the fourth quarter, when Chandler Kincade found Jeff Parker on a short slant for the touchdown and a 14-10 lead.

That wouldn't hold as long as the Rockets two minute offense led them downfield for what ultimately ended up being a short touchdown run that set them ahead, first by 3 than by 6 with the later field goal to conclude the half, and a lead of 14-20 heading into the tunnel that would last up until the final quarter where the Zips appeared to have the game in control after an early touchdown when J.T. Blyden followed his blockers into the end zone for the lead lead. The Zips defense had the lockdown on the Rockets until the final drive.

On that drive, a miscommunication allowed a fourth down completion to go for 56 yards and put them in field goal range, than on first down, the read option saw Woodard skirt off tackle for a touchdown on a 23 yard carry and suddenly with thirty seconds left, the Rockets who would complete a pass to convert the two points, were up 28-20 on the Zips.

Jeff Parker and Jordan Matthews stepped up in big ways. The drive sputtered early, three completions netted just 14 yards and used two time outs, but on third and five, the Zips decided to send their tall tight end, Jordan Matthews on a fly route and when the bullet pass caught him in stride, he churned out fifty-eight yards and the Zips were in business, fourteen seconds left and the Zips pushed the ball closer to the end zone, but on second and goal with just three seconds to go, they knew it was score or go to the tunnel with their heads hung.

They opted to do the prior and when Chandler Kincade dropped back, he found his favorite target open on a curl, his defender over pursued and missed the ball, and he caught it cleanly, turning he went untouched for the score and tied the game. Tom O'Leary's extra point went right down middle and with just a second left, the Zips tied it.

A pooch kick sent the game to overtime and the Zips lost the flip, going on offense first they wasted no time, completing a pass to Jordan Matthews for 5 yards, than J.T. Blyden picked up the first down on the next play. On their final offensive play, the Zips found Fransohn Bickley who caught the wide open pass and turned up field crossing into the end zone to the roar of the home crowd. Oddly enough, to conclude the series, Tom O'Leary's extra point clanked off the post and was whistled off, and the Zips defense needed a stop.

Two sacks put the Rockets in precarious position, and on third and long their quarterback scrambled to get them back to a 4th and 10. On said play, they dropped back and fired a rocket to the end zone, which would be batted down by Jerome Lane and the Zips celebrated their tight victory which brought this unit back to .500 on the season.

The Akron Zip's victory sends them into the bye week with a 3-3 record and 2-1 in MAC play, which slates them to be towards the top of their division. This year with Bowling Green's struggles, their division is much more wide open and it could lead to Akron's second ever MAC Championship appearance, but with just a third of their MAC games completed, it's a bit too early to call.

                      Week 7 Review

Florida State continues to lead the pack as they retain the throne midway through their season. The Seminoles join what is a rather large amount of undefeated teams amongst the top of the pool, while Penn State fell for the first time this season, knocking them from the ranks of the unbeaten on a rather uneventful week.

Ohio State made a statement this week after a close call against the Illini a week ago by dominating the Iowa Hawkeyes on all ends of the ball, piling up 400+ offensive yards, allowing less than 200 and yielding just one touchdown the whole afternoon spelt a commanding victory for the Buckeyes.

#15 LSU saw it's heisman candidate Leonard Fournette shoot back up the polls with a strong two touchdown 117 yard performance against the Florida Gators. The Gators just couldn't keep up with the relentless ground and pound of Les Mile's Bayou Bengals and fell due to it.

Illinois couldn't knock the Buckeyes from the ranked of the unbeaten a week ago, but this week, the Illini traveled to Happy Valley and claimed victory in Beaver Stadium. The Fighting Illini fought for 17 second half points to stave off the Nittany Lions.

Texas Christian needs a huge second half rally, scoring 21 in the third to lead themselves past the Iowa State Cyclones. The Horned Frogs have had a rough season in defense of their title and things didn't look good through the half as the Cyclones built up a 24-3 lead before the Frogs piled on in the third to tie it and ultimately steal the victory.

Syracuse stunned the Fighting Irish to knock them from the top spot earlier in the season and they put the Hokies in their crosshairs but an interception for a touchdown in the final three minutes was enough to propel the Hokies to a victory over the Orange.

Trevor Knight passed for 417 yards, rushed for 73 more and accounted for five touchdowns on Saturday as his Sooners took care of business against the Tennessee Volunteers and to remain undefeated and appear to be the Big 12's best shot at a title contender.

                        Week 7
                        Coaching Review

In the seventh week, our first head coach slips from bowl eligibility in an unsurprising manner as the Massachusetts Minutemen who are on a 24 game losing streak continue to do just that, they fell to a superior Notre Dame Fighting Irish squad that was simply a paycheck game for the smaller school. The Minutemen struggled especially so on offense where they had just 118 offensive yards.

Out in Wyoming, the Cowboys offense had a peculiar game, in their 7-35 loss to the Air Force Falcons, their passing attack had one receiver get 14 receptions, Maulhardt drew in all the passes, there was only one completion to a receiver that wasn't him. This led to the huge discrepancy in points from them, as their pass attack couldn't diversify and their ground game didn't succeed as much as was hoped.

John Valkyrie called a good game down south but the Jaguars of South Alabama simply out performed his squad on offense and was just a little better on defense to hold out until the final whistle as the Jags pulled to a 2-4 record on the season with this victory.

                          Akron Zips Season to Date

The Akron Zips have continued to be one of the more polarizing teams in the NCAA, the Zips came in with high expectations yet sit at .500, although they have beaten every team they were supposed to, questions remain about their ground attack.

Tyler Kozlov has bounced around J.T. Blyden and Darian Green and it appears that Blyden will once again be the starter. With Green suffering from a torn pectoral, he hasn't played in three weeks but is listed as probable for the matchup against the Ball State Cardinals where he will take over as the second string half back.

Additionally, Dameon Willis left last week's matchup against the Toledo Rockets late and details were scattered but it was officially released that his season has ended. Willis has a torn rotator cuff after over extending on a tackle attempt and falling to the ground in pain. This has caused a major shake up in arrangement on the defensive end. John Rachal will be moving back to linebacker to replace Dameon Willis, with second year freshman Geoffrey Byers backing him up. Replacing Rachal at left end is Anthony Clark, the third year sophomore has one tackle this season. Brock Boxen will back him up.

The Zips recruiting trail has seen a lot of progress in recent weeks, while missing out a five star Duncan Boland (ATH) who opted to sign with the Wyoming Cowboys. The Zips moved on from that attempt and made a splash of three four star prospects while attempting to presently entice another. This could shape up to be Tyler Kozlov's best recruiting class to date!

Finally, the news isn't entirely good out of Akron, as there are more rumors swirling that link Tyler Kozlov to potential jobs across the country. As he continues to succeed in Akron, the offers will continue to come to his desk and eventually he may just accept one. He however refused to comment on this.

Never had this issue with my Galaxy but I'm tired of the lines, and I'd rather stay away from EASportsworld (if that even still exists) if possible.
I have the same issue taking pictures with my phone. I found that changing the video settings on the T.V helps a little bit.

Crazy season your having so far. It sucks that you cant get the running game going but it looks as though your wide receiver Parker is having a big year so far. Is Kozlov looking to leave at the end of the year? Should be an interesting next couple of weeks!

I can look into that, this TV hasn't been calibration friendly though, one of the few complaints I have about the Sammy.

I know, it's like a different team every week luckily the running game is slowly starting to come around, but the first few weeks most hand offs ended up with three defenders in the backfield while now we are getting some penetration and downfield blocking.

                                Week 8 Review

There is a new team atop the polls this week as the UCLA Bruins climb into the illustrious top spot in the most recent polls, while there continues to be six undefeated teams in the polls, all six make up the top six. UCLA, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, LSU and Arizona State. Eight weeks into the season and there are still at least ten teams alive for a potential national championship birth, and that's huge for the competition level present.

Starting however with recruiting news, the top play in the land, Myles Earls has decided to make Ohio State his home, joining the #2 half back Maverick Boucher in joining the Ohio State Buckeyes giving them incredible depth at the halfback position. In a big surprise signing, Duncan Boland, the #3 player in the country and all around athlete has decided to take his talents to Wyoming. The Cowboys shot up his interest as the continued recruiting attempts drew Boland in, this is a major get for a team stuck in a rut, and a big win for Mid-Majors.

Looking back at the game action, while there are six undefeateds, two took the plunge into one loss following last week's action. Georgia Tech couldn't beat a Virginia squad that has largely been considered helpless when it comes to the ACC, the Cavaliers picked up a huge win for their program, knocking off the #3 ranked Yellow Jackets. Texas A&M much like Alabama came in with expectations to start the season but had fallen off in a big way, at the very least they salvaged their season with a huge victory over the undefeated Auburn Tigers in Jordan-Hare.

Oklahoma continues to win, this time by blowing out the Kansas Jayhawks in a 44-7 contest. The Sooners led by Trevor Knight are a serious contender, as they were last year, but with TCU struggling, the Big 12 can belong to the Sooners this year, there just isn't much talent otherwise in the conference.

South Carolina managed to knock off the ranked Tennessee Volunteers, the Gamebirds haven't had a spectacular season to date and have been riddled with the inability to close out tight games. This victory moves them towards bowl eligibility in what appears to be a middling year for The Old Ball Coach.

The Tide who were referenced earlier took care of the Arkansas Razorbacks in a single point contest. The Tide led by 10 at one point, but the Razorbacks slowly eked out a lead before a touchdown and two point conversion led Nick Saban's school past the Razorbacks.
