Cody Grice led defense aids fourth quarter rally, Zips stun Herd

    vs

Coming into this game, most of the hype surrounded this Marshall offense, but the big question mark was the right side of the line without injured starting right tackle, Clint Van Horn. This question was answered by the statline, 5 sacks on Gunnar Holcombe, a terrible number with four sacks coming off the right side as the team clearly opted to attack the weakspot left by the lack of the starting lineman. This spelled difficulties for a Marshall offense which struggled throughout the game at times despite clearly showing signs of being potent.

Marshall had the momentum that much was true and on the very first play, they achieved their first of seven sacks on Chandler Kincade, who left the game twice with pain but would return by the time the ball came back to the offense. It did appear that the ankle injury that plagued him was evident as he showed difficulty planting and throwing the football as obvious pain set in and it led to a few bad plays including three interceptions, one in the first, third and fourth quarters. After the final one, Coach Tyler Kozlov brought his struggling quarterback to the side.

"Ignore the scoreboard, ignore the past three quarters. This is your game. We still have an entire quarter, settle down and stop forcing things. We won't come back with one big play, if there is one make it, but don't be afraid to make smaller plays. That guy under their center is just as frustrated as you, the only difference is, his defense scored and his kicker hit the field goal. Settle down, we are in this."

The words permeated the quarterback whom infact settled down and made a set of beautiful plays to lead his team downfield and finally into the end zone for the first time, on a pass to Zach D'Orazio on a slant, a key score for a team that just needed some form of motivation. An interception later and the ball was right back with the Zips, who ran a play action and found Jeff Parker streaking, the pass would be a little short but Parker would reel it in and barely outrun the corner into the end zone, making it 13-17, a missed extra point proving to be a decisive matter.

Another stop gave the Zips the ball with two time outs, a good chunk of field to go and needing a touchdown, it was win or go home due to the missed extra point and it would appear that it would kill them.

Twice the team would be caught up on fourth down and long, a figure they hadn't converted up to the final offensive drive. Fourth and ten from the forty-four the Zips quarterback would find his massive target in Jordan Matthews and connect with the freshman tight end, and at the twenty-three it would be the tight end again in the seam pulling in the reception with contact, setting the Zips up.

On the next play, Jeff Parker brought the ball to the goal line, for a final first down, four downs to punch the ball in with 27 seconds to go. The first play, a hand off up the middle would get smashed at the line and the team would orginally appear to run a no-huddle before calling a time out with 12 seconds to go. This time the team went for deceit. On second and goal, in the goal line formation, the team bunched up the middle, only to pitch it to the outside, Connor Hundley would barely cross into the end zone before being tackled from behind and the Zips soon piled on their junior halfback.

Akron with just seven seconds to go, took the 19-17 lead. Opting for two in order to ensure no chance of losing without a touchdown being score, the Zips would complete a pass to Jordan Matthews in the flat but the tight end would get wrapped up and dragged down for no gain and it came to the kick off.

The Zips had previously lost due to a kick off return and you could guarantee coach Kozlov was preaching the need to defend this kick, of course they wouldn't kick it deep. The squib went to the Marshall thirty before being brought back to the 38. With just a few seconds to go, Gunnar Holcombe heaved the ball downfield and as time expired, the Zips swatted the ball down harmlessly, as the Smurf Turf began to be coated in confetti, a few men coming from the tunnels carrying the Zips prize, the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl trophy.

The Zips improved to 9-4 on the season, with a second victory over Marshall that solidfied this season, the programs first trophy for their cabinet as they win their first ever bowl game, jointly it would be Tyler Kozlov's first bowl victory as a head coach as well.

Longhorns shock Cardinal in first slate of Bowl action

Bowl Games are underway and teams seasons are ending. Some on positive notes, others on not so positive notes. For programs like Akron who won their first bowl game in school history, the season is one for the history books, while teams like New Mexico State and Kansas State can go home with a sting, the Aggies were in their first bowl game in over thirty years while Kansas State expected to be remotely competitive in their game. It was obvious they weren't from the final score.

In the big game of this slate, Stanford who had two heisman potential players as well as a previous high ranking in the polls saw their season end disappointingly, on a skid. Losing in the Pacific 12 championship hadn't been bad enough, the Cardinal also dropped a game to the Texas Longhorns, one they were fairly favored in and one they should've won to capitalize on this season.

Army was the stunning game of this round, while the Black Knights finished with a solid record, they were mostly just beating upon the weak opponents that surrounded them, however in this one, they beat upon an American league opponent and escaped with a tight victory, a terrific performance by the program.

LSU shines against Oklahoma in final slate of Bowl Games

The Bowl Season has come and gone and what a blur it had been. Some teams proved themselves to belong while others simply faded away beneath the spotlight. Colorado State fought to the very end as they had all season and they are one of the teams promoted in the recent moves around the nation that has proven to be substantial. Losing by a single score to a very good Michigan State squad is far from a bad feat.

Clemson proved they are capable of beating "better" teams with the ten point victory they hung upon the Washington Huskies, the Huskies came in with one of the better defenses in the Pacific 12 but they couldn't stop the Tigers attack from hanging 418 yards on them.

In the upset, the LSU Tigers who barely eked their way into the post season with a 6-6 record demolished the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners came in with high expectations and expectant of an easy victory, it wouldn't happen however as the Tigers hung a quick 14 on the Sooners and never relinquished the lead from than on, shutting down Trevor Knight in the final frame to close out any hope of a rally.

          TCU takes the throne

Taysom Hill might've stolen the heisman right out of Trevone Boykin's grasp but don't expect that the national title would come easily as well. Taysom Hill has had a terrific season and the rest of the BYU Cougar squad definitely has a lot to be proud of, they just couldn't hold up to the Texas Christian squad, they held them to a deadlock after sixty minutes, but in the first overtime frame, it was done. Shutting down the Frog offense didn't do much as they knocked in the game winning field goal, thanks in large to a terrific defensive stand from their side that sacked Taysom Hill and put them in bad position for what ultimately was a missed field goal attempt.

The victory in what had been a back and forth affair with each score met with the opposition's retort proved to be a tremendous game, one that satisfied all that watched and it was the best offense in the nation, putting on the show that cements their place in history. The 2015-16 Texas Christian Horned Frogs are the national champions.

Trevone Boykin easily earned player of the game honors, as he capped off his tremendous, accolade filled season with a title. Boykin was a true force in this performance, dominant in the air and while he was somewhat quiet on the ground, he didn't need to utilize his legs as much, as his wide outs did most of the work for him.

Notre Dame climbs to #2 in the season ending polls, a victory over the Florida State Seminoles earning them the second spot, locking themselves in as a power. While many will clamor at their lack of conference being a negative, this storied program has been to consecutive BCS Bowls and this time walks out with a victory. This is a program on the uptick and don't be surprised to see them return to the national championship in the coming years.

                Akron Season Wrapup

To say this Akron team defied the odds would be an understatement, starting the season ranked in triple digits to receiving votes in the season ending polls is a huge testament to how far this team has come and will go in the coming years under head coach Tyler Kozlov. Despite his team having 31 interceptions between two quarterbacks, his team has rolled forward to it's first ever program bowl victory.

It all seems so far ago when the Buckeyes rolled the Zips and Kyle Pohl struggled and this team that Kozlov proudly proclaimed would compete in the MAC looked to be an after thought. At least until Tyler Kozlov altered his playbook and proceeded to develop a system to better utilize the talent on his roster.

Switching Tra Ingram to the starting halfback slot seemed to jumpstart an anemic rush attack at least for the short time he was healthy, while the biggest move was bringing in Chandler Kincade, who displayed freshman inefficiencies but also was able to put his team in positions to win, a key attribute for any starting quarterback.

That was what this team won, it wasn't often that the Zips won pretty, it was rather rare actually that they put a game out of reach from the opposition, but they played to win and they won often, scoring 9 wins this season, despite just barely missing out on a MAC Championship bid.

The Zips will go into the offseason with few question marks, they lose some to graduation but the bench is full and his deck is stacked, Akron faithful only have optimism for the future, a rare feat for a program so long mired in mediocrity.

I'm going to be going into the coaching carousel tonight, coaching applications have until the start of the next season to be put in, I'll take note of which teams have hired new coordinators/coaches in order to extend the deadline somewhat. At the moment I stand with 3, and all three will have their positions posted either tonight or tomorrow!

Tennessee (4-8) has fired Butch Jones for poor performance, in his place the Volunteers have signed Dave Aranda from Bowling Green State to take over the program on a five year contract

Oklahoma State (5-7) has terminated Mike Gundy's contract citing the several blow out defeats to Big 12 opponents this season. Doug Meacham has been signed in his place, Meacham, was the Texas Christian offensive coordinator for the top ranked offense

Pittsburgh (2-10) has fired Paul Chryst for the teams complete ineptitude this season, the Panthers have tagged Luke Fickell, head coach of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to take over the program.

Missouri (4-8) has ousted head coach Gary Pinkel after a poor season. The Tigers have tagged Jake Spavital, offensive coordinator for the Texas A&M Aggies as the head coach

West Virginia (5-7) is moving on from Dana Holgorsen as they aim to be competitive in the Big 12, a feat the coach has yet to accomplish. James Willis was tagged the new head man after leading the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajun to a 8-5 record

Bowling Green (10-4) has promoted Sterlin Gilbert, the offensive coordinator for the squad to be the new head coach following the departure of Dave Aranda

Purdue (3-9) has given up on ex-Kent State coach Darrell Hazell, looking to the ACC for their replacement in Randy Sanders, offensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles as the new head coach

Wake Forest (8-5) has replaced their head coaching position with Doug Martin, the head coach of the New Mexico State Aggies, he led the Aggies to their first bowl appearance in three decades

Illinois (2-10) has terminated Mark Hudspeth after just a single season after the coach went for a terrible record. He will be replaced by Jay Johnson, head coach of the Connecticut Huskies

Miami (OH) has fired Chuck Martin after a MAC worst 1-11 finish, he will be replaced by Ron Caragher, the previous head coach of the San Jose State Spartans

Troy was left with a coaching vacancy after Larry Blakeney announced his retirement. Troy tabbed New Mexico coach, Bob Davie as their new head man.

Toledo fires Matt Campbell after record, Dave Clawson comes over from BYU, the previous offensive coordinator will take over the reins of the program

Connecticut tabs Marshall defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni to a five year contract to take over the dilapidated program.

Unsurprisingly after a 0-12 finish, SMU head coach Tom Mason was terminated. John Papuchis defensive coordinator from Nebraska will look to rebuild this program.

In filling their vacancy, the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns claim Tim Beck from Nebraska, leaving Nebraska without either coordinator

Kalani Sitake joins the New Mexico Lobos to fill their head coaching vacancy, previously was the defensive coordinator for Tulsa

Dana Holgorsen takes over the 0-12 UTSA Road Runners

                      Wyoming hires new Offensive coordinator

The Wyoming Cowboys had launched a large search for offensive coordinator after a poor year last season, the team was looking to rekindle it's tired reserves and hopefully new talent would do just that. The team struck out on several of the big names that were still available as the coaching vacancies dwindled down and instead settled in on a new coach, fresh out of the Washington High School ranks, Eric Grant will slide in to take over the Cowboys. Grant boasts an air-raid scheme that should cause trouble in the Mountain West, the major aspect of his air-raid is having a capable runner that doesn't need tight ends on the field as much, there is a good amount of running out of a one man set from his offenses.

                      Massachusetts tabs local as coach

Massachusetts has yet to put together a solid season of FBS football since their rise to college footballs highest level. Today, they have gone extremely outside of the head coaching spectrum to tab Quinn Retney as their head coach. Retney is a graduate student of Boston College and interviewed really well for the position. His offenses which utilize excellent blocking packages and a heavy running back oriented attack are a testament to his alma matter and it's recent history of ground and pound. The coach utilizes a spread option offense to do this, rather than lining up behind a heavy offensive line, he utilizes a lot of moving wide receivers and half backs to confuse the defenses with pre-snap motion and should bring excitement to a team without much reason to be excited for.

New offensive coordinator signing aims to usher in a new offensive era at Arkansas State

Finally, looking down south the Arkansas State Red Wolves had once had put the coaching world on notice, poaching a hot commodity from Auburn to headline their program, but after his abrupt departure the team has been left in a mediocre stasis prompted by an uneventful offense and middling defense. While this most recent signing won't help on the later side, the Wolves can and will benefit on the offensive side from the signing of John Valkyrie a graduate student from Texas Tech that studied under head coach Kliff Kingsbury and took in his spread offense philosophy, he will bring an exciting look to this offense and an identity that has been lacking.

Does everyone prefer the excel tables over plain text updates? I'd likely keep them for the individual games but I'm curious especially in regards to weekly updates if everyone would prefer more text versus the excel sheets!

National Signing Day looms as Michigan reigns supreme

The B1G went big on signing day and in doing so had 3 of the top 7 recruiting classes in the 2015 class. Michigan and Nebraska came in at a deadlock atop the rankings. Michigan benefits from the fact that they had more five stars than Nebraska and a more top loaded recruiting class than Nebraska, who found most of it's talent in the 4 and 3 star prospect base.

Michigan's five stars stood out as Sean Langdon (QB), Joyce Markov (DT), Tony Herman (WR) and Eric Garcia (DE) all opted to join the program. The team will have quite a quarterback situation on it's hands, as they bring in the top quarterback of the class and a 4 star quarterback in Cameron Hill, both quarterbacks hailing from Illinois. Joyce Markov swings over from Ohio while Tony Herman is a Wisconsin product. Michigan did an excellent job of expanding it's horizons and finding talent all across the midwest, and they have the nations top class to show for it.

Nebraska's lone five star prospect was wide receiver Benjamin Davidson, Davidson will factor in almost immediately for the Cornhuskers who will utilize the top wide receiver in this class and his play making ability, the Huskers also made a major impact on the defensive line signing three four star defensive ends in Kev Daviau, Montrell Dickens, and Joe Harvey that will beef up the defensive unit. Marcus Hairston also joins the roster as an offensive tackle that experts project to have NFL caliber talent.

The #1 recruit in the nation, Matt McLeod has signed with the Georgia Bulldogs, a move that will give the team an elite runner yet again despite the graduations, this Bulldog half back unit continues to move forward. Other big names with first year impact are Kirk Townsend (CB) of Alabama, Alexander Frazer (TE) of Florida State, Marlin Bellamy (WR) of Georgia and Joe Davis (QB) of Wisconsin. There was a lot of good talent in this years recruiting class and the teams that managed to sign them can expect them to fill the highlight reel for the years to follow. This is where championship teams are built and the foundation is laid.

A Look at Akron and the MAC

The MAC Champions Bowling Green State reloaded the chamber with the fourth best recruiting class in the MAC, sadly it pales in comparison to Akron who ran away with the best in class recruiting class that nearly had them inside of the top thirty (35).

Akron's class was well rounded in all regards, as they focused on added players in various spots on both ends to ensure they had a solid run of talent to improve in the upcoming year. The top three players in the class all prime as wideouts to revitalize the unit and provide a substantial amount of depth, in fact five receivers were signed in this class, Xavier Lane, Almiro Rey, Dominick Womack (all 4 *'s), Tero Gutierrez (3*) and Deon Eldridge (2*) all project to be wide outs, all but Tero come in as athletes which mean they may be moved elsewhere to encourage depth.

The top recruit of every team in the MAC is as followed:
                            (OVR/POS)

Indiana signed #50/#1 Middle Linebacker, Tomas Turchi **** of Palos Hills, IL

Central Michigan signed #138/#10 Right End, Willie Wright **** of Muskegon Heights, MI

Bowling Green signed #198/#30 Halfback, David Broussard **** of Wyoming, MI

Ohio signed #664/#30 Middle Linebacker, Jermaine Moore *** of Oxford, OH

Buffalo signed #564/#25 Middle Linebacker, Bruce Jones *** of Lebanon, OH

Western Michigan signed #752/#41 Left Guard, Ryan Anderson *** of Ecorse, MI

                              Kyle Pohl is drafted

Despite riding the pine most of the year and having a .5 TD to INT ratio, a NFL team opted to use a seventh round draft choice on the Akron quarterback. Kyle Pohl was drafted in the final round of the draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pohl isn't expected to make a roster that features Ben Roethlisburger and Michael Vick unless the Steelers opt to go three deep at the quarterback position. He could hold on as a practice squad candidate however.
