    Lukas Stephens
    Lukas Stephens Named Freshman All-American

    Jan. 12, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — University of North Florida freshman linebacker Lukas Stephens was named to the Football Writers Association of American Freshman All-American team, the organization announced on Monday.

Stephens played all 12 games for the Ospreys, placing second on the team with 87 tackles, including ten for a loss. He also recorded three sacks and forced two pass breakups for the Ospreys, who finished 3-9 after a win over Tulane in their inaugural season finale.

“(Lukas) was the first player on the field almost every day, no doubt. He and I may have some disagreement from time to time, but there’s no question that that’s a kid that has the will to be great,” UNF interim coach Kennard Robinson said.

The linebacker goes down as the first UNF player to earn a place on the FWAA Freshman All-American Team. Stephens, an Orland Park, Fla. native, entered the UNF program as a three-star recruit and was tabbed a starter immediately following fall practice.

Stephens was one of the two Independents honorees of 2017. He joins BYU halfback Paul Osborne who rushed for 1482 yards and 12 touchdowns after coming in as the nation’s No. 223 ranked prospect.

      UNF Football Inaugural Awards Banquet

      Jan. 15, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — North Florida University hosted its inaugural football awards banquet, Thursday night, welcoming back the students to spring term and honoring those who excelled both athletically and academically during the 2016 campaign.

UNF finished its first season with a record of 3-9. Behind a tough schedule, the Ospreys faced four ranked opponents, including ACC champions, Clemson, who finished 10-4 on the season before losing their Orange Bowl match to UCLA. The 2016 Ospreys’ combined opponent record totaled in at 86-67.

Quarterback Caleb Poinsette, linebackers Jarrett Gaines and Lukas Stephens ended their seasons ranked amongst the Independents best at their respective positions.

Offensive Scout Player of the Year: Caleb Henderson, QB
Defensive Scout Player of the Year: Tomell One, DE
Special Teams Player of the Year: Jamie Chase, WR/KR
      Scholar-Athlete Award: Ian Rhoden, DE
      Strength Award: Lamar Billings, DT
Soaring Osprey Award: Jamie Chase, WR/KR
Defensive MVP of the Year: Jarrett Gaines, MLB
Offensive MVP of the Year: Caleb Poinsette, QB
Team MVP Award: Keenan Lever, SS
Most Improved Player: Keenan Lever, SS
      Non-Scholarship MVP: Ronald Booth, FB

      Banquet Quotes
HC Kennard Robinson on Jamie Chase
"Might be the most well rounded character on this entire team. As a walk-on, Jamie wasn't given anything coming into this season. Never did he complain, instead he made a name for himself and ended the year as our team's number one kick returner. Jamie displays great attitude, work ethic and also excels in the classroom. Probably the most coachable kid I'll ever come across, he's got a great future ahead of him."

DC Mike Flowers on Keenan Lever
"Team MVP was the toughest selection for Robinson and I. Lever, however, he's a big time playmaker. As the season progressed, Lever got better and better and eventually became a huge factor for us every Saturday. Its evident as he was named Independents Player of the Week twice within the final three weeks of our schedule. As a junior, we'll need to enjoy his presence while it lasts. Lever is a talent that could potentially play on Sundays one day."

HC Kennard Robinson on Caleb Poinsette
"Caleb had one of the most daunting tasks of anybody on this team. Fresh out of high school, he was handed the task of quarterbacking every Saturday for us against one of the toughest FBS schedules. He remained confident, and each week he got better. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll continue to do big things for this program."

            Todd Haley
North Florida Names Todd Haley Head Coach

            Jan. 19, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — North Florida University has named Todd Haley as its head football coach. Haley joins UNF after serving as an offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers and brings 21 seasons of NFL coaching experience to the Ospreys’ program.

An alumnus of North Florida University, Haley is the second head football coach in UFN’s football program’s brief existence.

“We are thrilled to welcome Todd Haley back to North Florida,” Lee Moon, UNF director of athletics, said. “Coach Haley embodies characteristics that we profiled for our head football coach. His experience at the highest level goes without saying, but he also brings integrity, determination, loyalty, and leadership. We are thankful he and his wife Chrissy have chosen to join again the UNF family.”

Prior to his stint with the Steelers, Haley served three years as the head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs where he notably guided the team to the No. 1 standing in the AFC West in 2010. While serving in Pittsburgh, Haley led the Steelers’ offense to multiple franchise record-setting seasons in categories across the board.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to North Florida and building upon the program,” Haley said. “A lot of thought has gone into this decision and my family and I felt it was something we could all grow into.”

Haley began his initial career as a scouting assistant for the New York Jets before receiving a promotion a year later as the team’s wide receivers coach. Since then, he’s coached for six different teams in the NFL including a Super Bowl appearance as an offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in 2009.

              Kennard Robinson
UTSA Hires Kennard Robinson as Head Coach

              Jan. 21, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla (AP) — Just two days following the hiring of Todd Haley, former UNF interim coach Kennard Robinson has agreed to a head coaching job at University Texas San Antonio (UTSA) for next season. He is set to join the team immediately following the firing of Chuck Martin who served just one year on the job.

“Kennard is an up-and-comer in the coaching profession,” said John Greer, UTSA athletic director. “We’ve been really searching out for answers and we came to a conclusion that Robinson was our best option.”

Robinson became North Florida’s interim head coach after Brian Jenkins resigned. He spent this season coaching running backs while also holding offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator titles. As an interim coach, Robinson held a 2-4 record for the Ospreys who finished 3-9 overall.

Robinson, who formerly coordinated under Jenkins at both UNF and Bethune-Cookman, was contacted to coordinate the offense by multiple big-name programs including USC, Oregon, and Rutgers while turning down an offer from Iowa.

“I’m happy to be taking this step but it’s unfortunate as I really felt I did enough to earn the head coaching job at UNF,” Robinson said. “I really hope those kids stay focused. They’ll have their third head coach next year within one year of playing.”

Robinson, 38, joins a UTSA team that went 1-11 overall in 2016. The first-year head coach will likely bring to the RoadRunners his own offensive style after using Jenkins’ left behind scheme to finish the year with North Florida.

“I must say, I’ve really grown onto that UNF program. Moving forward, there’s no question that I’ll be their biggest fan,” Jenkins said.

                Greg Turpin
UNF Lands Two Transfers, Both Defensive Ends

                Jan. 21, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — University of North Florida newly named men’s football head coach Todd Haley announced the addition of two transfers, Maajid Cunningham and Greg Turpin, on Tuesday afternoon. Both players will join the men’s football program for the spring semester.

“I’m pleased that we have been able to add two quality student-athletes that will be joining us this spring,” Haley said. “They’ve made my job a lot easier right off the bat.”

Cunningham, a defensive end, comes to UNF after redshirting his first year at Florida State. The Aventura, Fla. native was courted as a four-star athlete in high school, choosing the Seminoles over Nebraska, Auburn, Penn State, Clemson and Miami. The 6-foot-4, 283-pound versatile lineman brings a great array of skills and could contribute big to either side of UNF's line.

Cunningham joins the Ospreys as a redshirt freshman and will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Ospreys following his year out, per NCAA rules.

Turpin comes to the North Florida program following a true freshman campaign at Toledo. The fellow defensive end received only limited playing, racking up two tackles, both for a loss including a sack. Brooks, a native of Clearwater, Fla., was a highly touted three-star recruit through the west coast pipeline, committing to Toledo over Troy, Marshall, Miami, FIU, South Carolina, Clemson, and others.

Turpin enters UNF still as a true freshman and will have two years remaining after sitting out through 2017.

                  Myles Flanagan
NCAA Suspends UNF Running Back for a Year

                  Jan. 26, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla (AP) — North Florida starting halfback Myles Flanagan will miss the entire 2017 season after testing positive for a banned substance in a random drug test.

Flanagan and newly hired UNF coach, Todd Haley, confirmed at a Monday press conference that the NCAA has given Flanagan its mandatory full calendar year suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. An angered Flanagan claimed ingesting the drug was not his initial decision, but failed to state whose it was.

“I’m sorry, sure, but I’m not taking full responsibility for this because it wasn’t my choice,” Flanagan said.

Haley has decided to not appeal the current length of the NCAA’s issued suspension. An upcoming sophomore, Flanagan is allowed to practice with the Ospreys but not travel with the team.

“I’m behind all my players, but the bottom line behind this situation is that a rule was broken and the mandatory penalty was given,” Haley said. “We’ll look forward to his return, but until then we’ll need to seek out other options.”

Flanagan was originally named a preseason starter in 2016 before breaking his ribs in UNF’s inaugural game against Texas A&M. After sitting out for eight weeks, Flanagan returned to starting duties where he finished the year with 324 yards on 85 carries, including a career high 135 yard outing against Tulane.

NCAA bylaws state that such a positive test results in a calendar year-long ban. Flanagan will not, however, lose a year of eligibility and will be considered a sophomore in 2018.

Note: If you guys paid close, close attention to detail, you would've noticed Flanagan's overall went up significantly when he returned from his injury. He has a very low work ethic rating so he'd be the type to cheat the system.

UNF Football Announced 20 New Team Members

                    Feb. 4, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — North Florida University’s Head Football Coach Todd Haley announced today the 20 total players joining the 2017 singing class for the upcoming season.

The class, which is the 2nd in the history of the program, is comprised of 11 players who are projected to impact the offensive side of the ball, as well as ten players on the defensive side.

“I’m very pleased with what we were able to put together,” said Haley. “Over the past month, we’ve evaluated players beyond their football ability. We want to bring character to this program, hard workers with good attitudes. I’d like to think we’ve done well with that.”

Haley was hired on January 19, 2017 and quickly formed a staff that shared his visions on the recruiting trail. He and his assistants explored options even outside of UNF’s comfort zone of Florida, as evident with four out of state signees.

Three Ospreys are enrolled early, including two transfers, and will take part in spring practice next month.

UNF Set to Begin Spring Practice

                        April. 1, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The North Florida University football team and first-year head coach Todd Haley will begin Spring Practice Tuesday, 3:00pm, at the campus practice field.

The Ospreys' 15 practices are set to conclude April 1 with a Spring Game. UNF will have four practices before taking a week off for Spring Break (March 7-11). All practices and scrimmages are open to the public, and admissions are free of charge.

The final scrimmage of the spring period will be a part of UNF Football's "Spring Showcase", which features a celebrity golf tournament headlined by coach Todd Haley, who golfed collegiality for both the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes. Practice will be covered through note styled updates leading up to the Navy vs. White spring game.

Early headlines will include the running back race. Haley said the job is open, and the early competition will come from Antoine Bowers and Danny Farris. Myles Flanagan, who led the team in rushing yards, is suspended for the entire duration of the 2017 season.

UNF, after its 13-6 victory over Tulane, closed the year at 3-9 in their inaugural season. The Ospreys have entered the spring period without 10 seniors, a new head coach, and four additions that have enrolled early:

                        Giovanni Flynn, Fr., DT
                        Maajid Cunningham, Fr RS., DE
                        Greg Turpin, So RS., DE

Note: Early enrollees randomized based on work ethic and grades, these players will benefit from the spring boost and will allso participate in the spring game

Noah Fontenot Will Play Basketball and Football at UNF

                          Apr. 4, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — McGill-Toolen senior, Noah Fontenot, flipped his basketball commitment from Colorado State to the North Florida Ospreys in an announcement on Twitter. The 6-foot-7 small forward, a member of the Class of 2017, would also like to play football in college as a walk-on for the second-year Ospreys.

“I have decided to decommit from Colorado State, I will now be signing at North Florida to continue my football and basketball career .” — @fontenot13

Rivals.com rated Fontenot a three-star talent in both sports. At 6-foot-7, he ties Boston College commit Danny Williams as the tallest wide receiver in the Rivals recruiting database. Both are just one inch shy of the NFL’s all-time tallest receiver, Harold Carmichael, at 6-foot-8.

On the football field, Fontenot will play under recently hired Todd Haley who coached two decades in the NFL and has worked with elite receivers such as Larry Fitzgerald, Keyshawn Johnson and Antonio Brown. Fontenot, who reportedly clocked a 4.40 forty, brings raw skill to the Ospreys who lose four receivers to graduation in May.

“He has the potential to be a program changer,” Haley said. “But at the same time he also has the potential to get twisted up. Being a multi-sport athlete at the collegiate level is an entirely different idea than it is in high school.”

Fontenot, a native of Mobile, Ala., wrapped up his senior year with two state championships at the McGill-Toolen Catholic High School powerhouse. Besides averaging 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists for the 28-4 Yellow Jackets, Fontenot broke numerous receiving records on the field, hauling in over a 1,000 yards through the air.

Fontenot will sign his LOI with North Florida this Monday on college basketball's National Signing Day.

Note: I didn't include him, but he signed with us on signing day. He had no offers (none from me either) so I thought I'd make a storyline out of it.

2017 North Florida Spring Practice Coverage

                            Apr. 15, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — North Florida University has kicked off its spring practices and the Ospreys are already five days in to a spring practice season that Todd Haley hopes will prepare the second-year Ospreys for their new placement in the Sun Belt Conference. So far the news coming out of camp is mostly good, with players showing up strong and competitive.

“I’m seeing a lot of effort out there each day,” Haley said. “Everybody’s healthy. It’s a good sign. We’re heading into a huge season, one where we have a true chance to make a name for ourselves for years to come. We’ll be up against competition that caters more to us opposed to money.”

At quarterback, Haley made a bold statement claiming the positon was “wide open”, despite returning starter Caleb Poinsette coming off a nearly 2,000 yard season as a true freshman. Deshawn Harris, who carried the Ospreys to their program’s first win, and Caleb Henderson have gotten starting reps.

The running back position is in a similar standing with former starter Myles Flanagan suspended by the NCAA for the usage of performance-enhancing drugs. Danny Farris is expected to push former starter Antoine Bowers for position.

The offensive line is the team’s main concern. The young unit severely lacks depth and Haley has invited a wave of walk-on’s to fill the void. It’s the same story for the Ospreys’ linebacker cornerback units, and wide receivers.

The defensive end position is the Ospreys strongest suit with big names such transfers Tomell One (FAU), Greg Turpin (Toledo), Maajid Cunningham (Florida State) as well as returning starter Ronnie Hurd and former walk-on Bernard Washington who’s impressed thus far.

“We’ve got a lot of key guys still in high school right now,” Haley said. “We’re working with what we have. A lot of players have been working at multiple positions. They’re up to the challenge, though.”

                            Notes
                            — Maajid Cunningham, a former four-star athlete, is playing both the offensive and defensive line for the Ospreys. Cunningham enrolled on campus for the spring term after committing to the Florida State Seminoles in 2016. He will not be eligible at UNF until 2018.

                            — Jamie Chase is practicing at running back. As a walk-on last year, Chase was restricted to special teams but was classified as a wide receiver. He is expected to compete for playing time with the backs that will add two prospects in the summer.

                            — Lukas Stephens, a FWAA Freshman All-American, has made the switch from outside linebacker to middle linebacker. The change comes after the graduation of Jarrett Gaines, who led the Ospreys in tackles last season.

                            — Ronnie Hurd, an All-Independents defensive end, is practicing on both the line and at his former high school linebacker position. The change may only be temporary as the Ospreys prepare for the arrival of four high school linebackers this summer.

                            — Brice Hoyte and Willie Jones II, both cornerbacks, are also practicing with receivers. Both players registered time on offense last season, each recording a receiving touchdown.

                            — Quarterback Deshawn Harris has grown significantly skill wise, evident by Haley’s decision to open the competition at the starting position. Poinsette is lacking, missing receivers and scrambling a lot more often than he did last season.

                            — Quinn Florence, who started at defensive end last season, has made a switch to defensive tackle. Florence has put on weight and is now around 280 after weighing in at 255 as a freshman last season. Florence recorded 14.0 TFL's in 2016.

                            — Danny Farris has made notable gains, entering the spring season up from 197-pounds to 210. As a backup, Farris became the first UNF running back to rush for over 100 yards in a single game.

                            — In terms of regression, reigning team MVP safety Keenan Lever is looking out of character is multiple aspects. Lever, an incoming senior, was an All-Independents selection for the Ospreys. He was the No. 1 ranked strong safety at ASA College (NJCAA).

                            Observations

Spring practice has given spectators the first look of Todd Haley’s implemented offense and defense. Quarterbacks are working in both the gun and pistol, a tight end is typically on the field and receivers count varies from formation. The defense is practicing in a 3-4, making the switch from the previous 4-3 scheme.

As mentioned, Caleb Poinsette is scrambling out the pocket a lot more than he did during his freshman season. Including sacks, the quarterback rushed for 95 yards in 2016, he may have outnumbered that in Sunday's practice alone.

                              Haley Announces Spring Game Format

                              Apr. 21, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The teams have been divided and the format has been set for UNF’s second annual spring game, which will take place on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Ospreys’ Practice Field.

Saturday’s spring game will be played as a regulation contest with full quarters, UNF coach Todd Haley said. The game will have a running clock and will be treated like a regular American football game. Haley noted that the second half of the game could possibly see adjustments based on the score.

"We're going to try and play a game," Haley said after practice Monday. "We have very limited roster as of now, so the game may not be played to a full duration.”

In addition, Haley said that he would rotate quarterbacks Caleb Poinsette, Deshawn Harris and Caleb Henderson with both the navy and white squads. Punters and placekickers will also play with both teams. The contest will also feature kickoffs, punts, field goals and PATs.

“We divided the teams for the spring game and it will mostly be the first-team guys against second-team guys,” Haley said. “We put some key ones in with the twos, guys that will help give the second team a chance to score and defend. We also did that to see certain guys in specific match ups. The navy team will be mostly first-team guys with the second-team guys being the white team.”

                                Apr. 23, 2017

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A beautiful evening, filled with a festive atmosphere ended the final scrimmage of the 2017 spring season with the Navy team defeating the White, 31-6, in front of an announced crowd of 1,074 at the Ospreys' Practice Field.

“It was very lopsided, I wanted to give our second-string guys a chance to show their worth,” said head coach Todd Haley. “We’re not really going to put the score of this game in account, but more towards the individual player performances.”

Offensively, the squad rotated new quarterbacks for each quarter. Caleb Poinsette led the way going 15-of-25 for 146 yards while tossing an interception. He also added a touchdown and 36 yards on the ground. Deshawn Harris was 10-of-27 for 143 yards with two touchdown passes. Caleb Henderson had a rough going, taking two fourth quarter sacks following an interception before being subbed out.

The defense for the Navy squad stood out the most. Both Keenan Lever and Josh Weddle recorded interceptions while Jeremy Faulk forced a fumble that was recovered by the defense. Overall, the Navy squad allowed the White just 152 yards, compared to the Navy’s 421.

Returning walk-on cornerback Lindsay Berry scored the White team’s only points with a 90 yard kickoff return that was followed up with a failed two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

The big receivers were Tyrell Miller who had six receptions for 61 yards. Willie Jones II, a cornerback, recorded three receptions and a touchdown while tight end Michael Rhyne added three catches for 45 yards. On the White team, Myles Flanagan took a screen pass 44 yards to solidify a 67 yard outing on two receptions. Shane O’Conner, a lineman, played a lone snap at tight end in which he caught a 17 yard touchdown reception.

On the ground, returning lettermen Danny Farris had a big day in the absence of injured Antonie Bowers, taking 27 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Deshawn Harris added 32 yards on just three attempts while Myles Flanagan tallied 16 carries for 40 yards.

The Ospreys will close out the academic semester with individual work on their own. The squad will begin training camp in August to prepare for their debut in the Sun Belt Conference. The complete 2017 schedule is expected to be released in the upcoming weeks.

                                Injury Report

Within minutes of the opening kickoff, two Ospreys were taken back to locker rooms with major injuries. Fullback Ronald Booth went out with a concussion while halfback Antoine Bowers left with a serious shoulder injury that could keep him out of action for at least two months.

Greg Turpin sat out a series after straining his pectoral during the second quarter.

                                Notes
                                • Caleb Henderson entered the game early in the fourth quarter after Poinsette and Harris rotated between teams periodically. Henderson completed his first pass before throwing an interception, returning to the field on the ensuing possession only to be sacked consecutively. Henderson, at 160-pounds, did not return to the game.

                                • Greg Turpin blocked a 44 yard field goal attempt by Seth Hughey in the fourth quarter. Including the block, Hughey was just 1-5 on field goals today. He went nearly perfect at 8-of-9 during the 2016 season but rarely attempted kicks outside a 40 yard range.

                                • While the game counts only as an exhibition, Lindsay Berry's 90 yard kick return was the first KOR touchdown by any UNF player.

                                • The Spring Game scrimmage featured 17 walk-ons who've yet to make the official dress roster. Tremaine Reese, a strong safety, had 11 tackles and a forced fumble to likely make a run for a jersey this season.
