UNF Upsets North Texas in Historic First Victory

    Oct. 10, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The adversary-stricken North Florida Ospreys (1-5) entered the EverBank Field, Saturday night, eyeing North Texas (4-1), ranked just outside the nation’s top-25. The Ospreys proved to be more composed, and as the final seconds ticked off the clock, a 22-yard field goal by Seth Hughey gave UNF a 32-31 victory. It marked the program's first victory, one over a program that has accumulated 490 victories since its first season in 1913.

“This victory will go down in the record books, and it’ll probably have more meaning than any college football storyline in the next fifty years,” said UNF Head Coach Brian Jenkins. “I’m happy for the guys, sure, but these weren’t the type of circumstances we wanted to have in such a meaningful milestone.”

Jenkins speaks regarding the state of UNF’s football program that went under NCAA investigation just last week. In a boycott aimed towards the removal of Jenkins’ head coaching duties, 20 of UNF’s 51 players agreed to not suit up for the North Texas game, this being a list including 13 starters.

Today, all of the odds seemed to be put in the backburner as the Ospreys’ second and third-string players did something even their starters failed at. The victory was the team’s second 1-point decision of the year, formerly on the losing side in a 42-41 affair at Louisiana Tech; the script was flipped this time around.

Hughey’s last second field goal attempt was set up behind the arm of Deshawn Harris who led a 10-play, 73-yard drive with just over a minute remaining on the clock. Harris, formerly a preferred walk-on, would be acclaimed player of the game after completing 21-of-38 passes for 230 yards with a pair of touchdowns while rushing for another in his first collegiate start.

“I got my opportunity to shine and I used it,” said Harris. “I work hard. I believe I could provide for this team every Saturday.”

Notably, the quarterback would go the duration of the game without committing a turnover. Harris paired up in a backfield with fellow preferred walk-on Danny Farris who had his redshirt pulled this week to replace boycott participant Antoine Bowers. Farris would exceed expectations, posting the first +100-yard performance by a UNF running back as the freshman recorded 118 yards on a season high 31 carries.

On defense, interceptions would prove to be key elements for the Ospreys. Patrick Chambers first picked off North Texas quarterback Demarcus Smith in the second quarter as the cornerback’s 24-yard return put UNF in position to capitalize on their second consecutive score. Entering the third quarter in a 24-14 deficit, cornerback Willie Jones II produced a major goal-line stand as he intercepted the ball at the three and took it 97 yards for UNF’s first defensive touchdown on the year.

The UNF secondary, however, faced a major hole at its safety positions. While Brice Hoyte played out of position at strong safety, walk-on Jared Wolk assumed duties at free safety. Demarcus Smith and the NT offense took advantage and prospered off the inexperienced duo, Smith coming up with 205 of his 371 passing yards in the first half alone as the quarterback misfired on just five of his 19 attempts through the period.

Despite their inexperienced core, UNF went the length of this game without penalties. Contrary, North Texas often shot themselves in the foot as they accounted for five on the day, notably a clipping flag that called back a 94-yard touchdown run by halfback Erick Evans in the third quarter. On third down, the penalty would be made up for as Smith linked with slot receiver Darvin Kidsy for a 64-yard touchdown. North Texas expanded their lead to 31-21 following the PAT before moving into the very pivotal fourth quarter of play.

“(North Texas) made a lot plays that could’ve mentally broke us down,” said Head Coach Brian Jenkins. “Today, the men who decided to play for us— they showed this program that they’re the winners.”

Saeed Dawson was the leader of the defense that produced major stops in the period. The middle linebacker accounted for 13 tackles on the day with four straight stops and a game-changing tackle to force fourth down on the Eagles. In the midst of multiple two-way players, Willie Jones II would haul in his second touchdown, this time on offense as the cornerback took a post route an additional 37 yards for a 51-yard touchdown reception. The score reduced the deficit to just 31-29 with 4:10 remaining after a successful 2-point conversion pass by Deshawn Harris.

Failing to enter clock management, UNF would come away with a huge defensive stand, forcing the Eagles to settle for a 35-yard field goal that was missed. Had the field goal been made, NT would have held a six point lead. Instead, North Florida drove the ball up the field and came away with the game-winning field goal that’ll be remembered for years to come.

“It’s a great feeling,” said placekicker Seth Hughey. “When I tried out for the team I thought about moments like this, it was a lot of pressure but this meant a lot. I had to make it.”

Reports have composed that Brian Jenkins may have coached his last game at North Florida, others say the win may solidify Jenkins’ job security pending NCAA verdict. UNF next plays at Ole Miss (5-2), Oct. 18 at 12:30pm, in their season’s fourth game against Power-5 competition.

    • First touchdown
    • Second game in rain

Injury Report: Brice Hoyte left late in the game with an apparent sprained shoulder injury. Trainers revealed that Hoyte is improbable for the next week weeks.

Deshawn Harris Named FBS Independents POTY

        Oct. 12, 2016

        Deshawn Harris
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Florida freshman quarterback Deshawn Harris was today named the FBS Independents Offensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 10. Harris accounted for 230 passing yards and had a hand in three touchdowns in UNF’s 32-31 victory over North Texas (4-1) last Saturday, the program’s first ever win.

Harris is the second Osprey to receive weekly plaudits from the committee this season. He joins Jerod Hearn (defensive) who was honored in week five.

With as many as 20 players sitting out in this game in protests, Harris along with many of the UNF backups were handed the starting nod. The quarterback passed 21-of-38 for 230 yards and two scores while running in another in his first collegiate start. In crunch time, Harris led a 10-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a field goal by Seth Hughey that handed UNF its go ahead score at 32-31 just before time expired to hand the team the victory.

A product of Le Verne, Calif., Harris committed to UNF as a preferred walk-on back in February on National Signing Day. Since then he’s earned a scholarship, serving as game-to-game backup for starter Caleb Poinsette. Prior to Saturday’s outing, Harris had only thrown 17 passes on the year, completing five for no touchdowns.

The quarterback’s heroic efforts will be something that’s forever remembered as he defied the odds, capturing a milestone of a win that not even the most faithful of UNF could’ve predicted. It is unknown if Harris will start in the Ospreys next showing, but from this point on he could become a much more dependable point of the offense.

UNF (1-5) takes back to the road next week, traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, to face the No. 24 ranked Ole Miss Rebels. The game tabbed as the Ospreys’ fourth showing against a ranked opponent is scheduled for a 12:30pm kickoff from Vaught–Hemingway Stadium in a game that will be regionally broadcasted.

          Jenkins Forced Out at UNF

          Oct. 15, 2016

UNF nabbed their program's first win on Saturday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Brian Jenkins accepted a $900,000 buyout of his contract and resigned as the football coach at North Florida University on Monday after being accused by the NCAA of committing multiple violations. Now, the NCAA is taking the step to ensure he can’t coach a college program for at least five years.

Jenkins received a five-year show-cause penalty – one of the harshest the NCAA can impose against an individual. Kennard Robinson, who was hired by Jenkins last year as an offensive coordinator, will reportedly be named the interim coach.

Jenkins’ buyout – paid for in part by an anonymous donor’s gift of $750,000 – included a stipulation that prevents Jenkins from suing the university. He had three years left on his contract at a base salary of $700,000.

At a news conference late Tuesday night, North Florida Athletic Director Lee Moon said the firing was a disappointment, “But sometimes these sorts of situations bring very good things, and I think that’s the only way we can feel about it,” he said. “We are going to move forward.”

According to the Associated Press, Moon met briefly with Jenkins on Sunday morning. Team personnel members then gathered in the locker room for what appeared to be a team meeting that broke up about midday. Moon claimed the search for a new head coach has already begun.

In a statement released by the university, Jenkins said, “I wish nothing but the best for these young men and the remainder of their season.”

Jenkins presence as head coach was the reason of UNF’s 20-player boycott game against North Texas last Saturday. Despite missing a chunk of starters, Jenkins coached North Florida to their program’s first win, upsetting the then-undefeated North Texas Eagles 32-31. Sources, however, claimed that Jenkins played little to no role in the coaching department and instead coordinators Kennard Robinson and Mike Flowers did much of the play calling.

The departure of the 44-yar-old Jenkins, who was hired two years ago after a successful five-year run at Bethune-Cookman, comes in the midst of North Florida’s 1-5 inaugural season.

The NCAA said in a report Oct. 14 that Jenkins had violated four major NCAA regulations including extended practice hours, improper benefits to players, housing, and mistreatment to players. The wrongdoings began at Bethune-Cookman – going mostly unreported – before continuing on when Jenkins signed with UNF in 2015.

It was an embarrassing fall for Jenkins. At Bethune-Cookman, he had a 46-14 record and was named coach of the year three times.

            UNF Signs Second Tight End

            Oct. 16, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Florida’s 2017 recruiting class added a third member on Tuesday evening as tight end Trevor Dunn committed to the Ospreys.

The 6-foot-2, 278 pound tight end, who plays at NMB High School in North Miami Beach, chose UNF via Twitter. In a phone conversation with Osprey Radio shortly after the announcement, Dunn listed several of the factors that led him to make his decision.

“I wanted to stay in-state, that was pretty big for me,” Dunn explained. “I really weighed my options (until) the end, I thought UNF was a really intriguing place to go.”

Dunn is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 70 ranked tight end in the country by the Rivals.com. He selected North Florida over an offer from FAU while receiving additional interest from Texas State, UL Monroe, and Florida International.

Dunn committed without visiting the North Florida University, although he’s been on campus multiple times as his sister attends the school. His verbal comes just days after the resigning of head coach Brian Jenkins, which Dunn also noted.

“I must say, that did affect some things,” he said. “I really liked (Jenkins’) system and how it utilized the tight ends. I’m remaining optimistic, for now I’m just happy to have this decision out of the way.”

            UNF 2017 Commitments:

            Trevor Dunn - TE | | Rk: (Overall: 1039, Position: 70)
            Grant Kaiser - FB | | Rk: (Overall: 1625, Position: 12)
            Isaiah Givens - TE | | Rk: (Overall: 1822, Position: 98)

UNF Interim Coach Already Making Changes

              Oct. 16, 2016

Freshman Willie Jones II was amongst the four newly named team captains
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Florida University football named offensive coordinator Kennard Robinson its interim head coach after the resigning of Brian Jenkins. So far, Robinson has taken charge; making changes within the lineup and renaming team captains in efforts to revitalize the UNF Ospreys.

Robinson met with the media Wednesday for the first time since taking over following Brian Jenkins resigning on Tuesday. Jenkins’ departure came two days after the Ospreys (1-5) defeated North Texas 32-31 in the program’s first win.

Multiple backups will move up on the depth chart, Willie Jones II will notably replace currently injured Brice Hoyte at the No. 2 cornerback slot. Robinson also announced that the UNF backfield will return to its former state with Caleb Poinsette and Antoine Bowers starting as the two return to action after protest.

“That game against (North Texas) really allowed some guys to prove themselves,” said Robinson. “It showed us that this team has a lot more depth than we believed. Moving forward I’d like to really experiment with the talent on this young roster.”

Robinson also named new captains. "I felt like they brought a little more credibility to the team," he said.

The former quarterback coach now has the responsibility of acting as a head coach, but said the players respect the decision and are doing what he asks. Robinson added in the conference that Jenkins' pro style offense wasn't his scheme of interest, but that he would continue to utilize the system considering the point of the season.

"We're in the middle of the year so obviously I'm not looking to make any major changes," he said. "Slowly, we may begin to implement new formations and plays but for the most part we'll be sticking with what we have."

Robinson said he hasn't considered whether he'll be a candidate for the permanent coaching job, adding his focus is attempting to add to the wins column as the 2016 season closes to a close. UNF has a shot at prospering with upcoming home games against UConn, Kent State, and Western Michigan.

UNF athletic director Lee Moon said the team is buoyant and he hopes the change will build on their success.

“It’s tough, this has been a very eventful season for us,” Moon said. “We’re coming off a lot of momentum though. Moving forward hopefully we can begin to turn things around.”

Current Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, a UNF alumnus, told the Jacksonville News that he intends to apply for the job.

Cornerback Willie Jones II said he was surprised by the decision to change captains, but not in the choice of those four players, this including himself. "As a first-year team, nobody plans on giving us much of time of day,” he said. “We have to stay focused on the field. Honestly, no matter of circumstances, we don’t have the luxury of creating publicity.”

                Need to Know

UNF is entering the game following their program's first win as they defeated North Texas 32-31 behind a last second field goal. The game will also be the debut of interim head coach Kennard Robinson. Robinson assumed duties when Brian Jenkins was forced to resign this week. Ole Miss comes in on a roll, taking a break from SEC play after winning two straight against Vanderbilt (41-14) and #22 Auburn (27-17). The Rebels have at hand three All-Americans and a defensive unit that currently holds the nation's best turnover differential at +13.

Overall, the Rebels have produced 10 interceptions and six fumble recoveries on the season. They also rank in the top-15 for sacks with 17, UNF however hosts the sixth best pass rush with 19 sacks. Ole Miss is tied with Marshall for the most visits to the red zone with 38.

                Stories

New Head Man: Following the resign of Brian Jenkins, former offensive coordinator Kennard Robinson will be at the helm of the head coaching position against Ole Miss.

New Captains: With the induction of Robinson as head coach, new captains for both the offense and defense were named. Seniors; WR/HB Henry McNamara and TE Aaron Dobbs will lead the offense while senior DT Elliot Horne and freshman Willie Jones II represents the defense.

Back to Backup: Against North Texas, FBS Independents POTY Deshawn Harris threw for 230 yards and added three touchdowns while halfback Danny Harris produced 118 rushing yards, the first UNF back to amount for over 100 yards. Despite their roles in the win, Kennard Robinson has elected to return to the original season starters; Caleb Poinsette and Antoine Bowers.

The Return: The twenty players that sat out last week against North Texas in protest will return to the field this week.

Man, beast. This is some great stuff. Love how you've built this program from scratch, and it's struggled from day one. Kinda surprised to see Coach gone after just 6 games. You would think a start-up program would do their due diligence in making sure their first coach wasn't shady.

Love the layout. Very clean & easy to follow. I may take some of these ideas to UAB.

Kinda sucks that the backups are on the bench again. They won the school's first game after all!

Thanks ksw. The coach situation is just because I got tired of recreating Jenkins, it would've been my third time creating him because he was bound to get fired once again this offseason. I don't like the fact that all his stats reset either... I also had a motive of starting a storyline narrative as Robinson, our interim, as he tried his hand at building this program from the ground up while trying to get the full-time position next year. I think it would be fun writing that, but then again I don't want this to get too side tracked.

As for my lineup, I honestly have no clue how we beat North Texas, who had defeated both Indiana and Texas on the road. Our team overall had to be in the 40s for that game lol. Very good storyline aspect but pretty unrealistic. I think I'll consider starting them though, although I'm sure there won't be any repeat performances especially against Ole Miss

Thanks for giving this a shot man. Glad you like it!

North Florida Falls To No. 24 Ole Miss 38-0

                      Oct. 17, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jordan Wilkins and Eric Swinney each rushed for two touchdowns and Ole Miss’s defense did the rest as the No. 24 Rebels won their third straight game, defeating North Florida 38-0 Saturday.

North Florida, in its first season, was shutout - for the third time, a result coming at the helm of debuting interim head coach Kennard Robinson. The offensive coordinator stepped up this week after Brian Jenkins’ received a show-cause ruling by the NCAA following a short week-long investigation.

The game also marked the return for the 20 UNF players that sat out against North Texas – a game the gradual second-unit won – in a boycott aimed towards the removal of Jenkins as head coach.

“It’s been such a rough season, our theme this week has been mental toughness,” UNF coach Kennard Robinson said. “We’ve faced a brutal schedule. We’ve obviously faced adversity behind the closed doors. We need our guys to stay strong, to believe that we can make it through the rest of this year.

Robinson would confirm a decision to keep the backfield from the NT game, starting reigning FBS Independents Player of the Week, Deshawn Harris at quarterback and Danny Farris at tailback. Farris was pulled out of a redshirt last week in the victory, becoming the first UNF back to rush for over 100 yards as he finished with 118 while Harris accounted for three touchdowns and 230 yards passing en route to the weekly accolade.

“(Harris and Farris) are two of the hardest workers on this team, and it showed last week,” Robinson said. “I talked it over with both (Antoine) Bowers and Caleb (Poinsette) and my staff, we all agreed that those two deserved another shot to prove their worth.”

Harris and Poinsette shared series throughout the game, neither quarterback able to get much working against the pressuring defense. Poinsette, who was 13-of-20 for 82 yards, began to piece together a steady drive midway through the first only to have it derailed with an interception against the nation’s No. 1 turnover differential Rebels. Deshawn Harris finished 8-of-15, adding both 57 yards and another interception occurring during a late-push to stay competitive in the fourth quarter.

The Ospreys finished with 181 yards of offense, their third game totaling in the 100s.

“I accept the liability for a lot of our mistakes out there,” Robinson said. “Taking this position was great and all, but it isn’t the easiest task to take on without an advanced notice. I just need to be me and things will begin to piece together.”

For Ole Miss (6-2), the match was nothing but a brief interval from SEC play as they return to schedule next week against Tennessee.

The Rebels’ victory was sealed from the beginning as they moved the ball down the field with ease. Running back Jordan Wilkins chalked up his game’s two touchdowns in the opening quarter; first on a short two yarder before tallying a 45-yard score. Meanwhile, Chad Kelly was 18 passes in before throwing his first incompletion. The senior quarterback finished 28-of-37 for 282 yards while tossing an 81-yard touchdown to Cody Core during the third quarter.

UNF defensive tackle Lamar Billings would intercept Kelly, first deflecting the ball before reeling it in the switch possessions before the half. Like most of the Ospreys’ drives, it was ended with a punt. Their punter, Logan Whalen, kicked the ball away nine times, totaling 358 yards of distance on the day.

The Ospreys have dropped to 1-6 on the year. Their mediocre season has continued to mount fan criticism, much of it circulating around the first-year program’s acceptance over multiple FCS schools that applied to be moved up to the FBS Division in replacement of UAB in 2015.

                      Notes:
                      • Kennard Robinson first game as (interim) head coach
                      • Second straight game with interception
                      • First d-line interception (Lamar Billings)
                      • First game wearing white-jersey, silver-pants combo

Injury Report: Prior UNF starters CB Brice Hoyte (shoulder), HB Myles Flanagan (ribs), and KR Jamie Chase (pectoral) missed Saturday's game. All three are probable to return next week.

Ole Miss loss Chad Kelly and Jordan Wilkins to minor injuries that both returned from. Akeem Judd, backup halfback, left the game with a broken wrist.

Note: Treadwell put Chambers on his *** 19 times smh.. I didn't include it but the runner-up in the blocking category had 9 pancakes, another wide receiver. I need some stronger corners, man. I'm also just now realizing the Harris and Farris name correlation lol, could make for a popular duo in the future. They've both got high work ethic ratings - hence the comment - so its a possibility they could sneak up on Poinsette, Flanagan and Bowers.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out my game recap style as you can probably see. I hate doing "scoring summary" recaps because its already in the box score and i really hate doing play-by-play because I don't find those fun to write nor read

Roundup: From the looks of things, Malloy is all in for Army at this point. He may even give the program his commitment before he visits the campus in week 12, chances are he'll also be canceling those visits to Rutgers and Pittsburgh anymore.

Roundup: The question at this point is if Berry will play college football, at least in the FBS. We enter week nine of the season and the quarterback continues to sit out with injury - no FBS scholarships in hand - thus losing out of the spotlight as backup quarterback Jeff George makes a name for himself.

                          UNF Receives Three Verbal Commitments

                          Oct. 10, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A shutout loss during the first week on the job for new interim football coach Kennard Robinson was relived as news came in that three new recruits had given their verbal, joining UNF’s 2017 recruiting class.

Seminole High School (Stanford) wide receiver Kahlil Dixon, a three-star prospect per Rivals.com, and Bay (Bay Village, Ohio) wideout Cedrick Korris have made their verbal commitments to UNF. Kings Point, Fla., two-star defensive-tackle Giovanni Flynn also announced his commitment with the Ospreys.

Dixon, an all-district and all-area selection, is currently UNF’s highest rated recruit at No. 735 in the nation. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect was recruited early on by the now-resigned Brian Jenkins and held UNF atop of his list of suitors for consecutive weeks.

Korris, another three-star receiver, was courted by the likes of multiple MAC teams. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound possession styled receiver chose UNF over other offers from Kent State and Purdue, where Korris visited in the Boilermaker’s week five loss to Indiana.

Flynn, who stands at 6-1 and weighs 259 pounds, fills an immediate need for UNF. The Ospreys graduate both of their starters at defensive tackle this year and with an exception of FAU transfer Jeremy Faulk, they will return only two other options, both being walk-on’s.

Despite losing Jenkins as head coach, UNF has kept ahold of all of its prior committed recruits. Their total of verbals on the year now increases to six, good for the nation’s 75th best recruiting class.

                          UNF 2017 Commitments:

Note: This has nothing to do with this post, but I've been slowly updating my team history reserve on page one. Cool thing about the teambuilder dynasties is that I get to open the history of the program.. that being said, I made the reserve wikipedia themed, basically covering everything from start to finish

                            Need to Know
                            • North Florida houses the nation's worst offense and defense

                            • Connecticut has started the season 0-6, coming off a 34-0 shutout loss against Houston

                            • North Florida's Kennard Robinson will coach his second game as interim this Saturday, this time amidst of the home atmosphere of the EverBank Field

                            • Media polls reveal UCONN's Bob Diaco is at the most risk amongst all FBS coaches of losing his job

                            • UCONN enters the game without three of their starters, all due to injuries, two being season ending

                            • Caleb Poinsette, Antonie Bowers will return to the starting lineup, concluding the two game starting stint of quarterback Deshawn Harris and halfback Danny Farris

                            • Analysts are predicting a win for North Florida

                            • The Ospreys enter the game without Brice Hoyte (shoulder) and Myles Flanagan (ribs), both will return next week against Kent State

                            Stories
Get Your Tickets!: UNF is entering week nine with five games remaining on the 2016 scheduled, of the five, three are slated as home games while the other two (Arkansas and Tulane) will be on the road.

Freshmen...: UNF houses 33 freshmen, 15 being acclaimed starters. With the postseason quickly approaching, it may not be wishful-thinking for one or two of them to wind up on the NCAA Freshman All-American Team. Top candidates: Lukas Stephens, OLB., Willie Jones, CB.

There Can Only Be One: North Florida tested waters at quarterback last week against Ole Miss with Deshawn Harris and Caleb Poinsette, both finishing with similar results. The race for position may continue, but this week Poinsette will return to the starting role.

Offensive Potential: When not faced against a ranked opponent this season (3 games), the Ospreys have averaged 340.6 yards of offense and 26.6 points per game. As stated earlier, North Florida ends their 2016 campaign with five consecutive non-ranked opponents.

Been working for a few days so I haven't checked in. Great first win Beast! I was surprised to see Jenkins let go so quick regarding the allegations. The school must believe there's some truth to it. I hate seeing a coach gone mid season as it can create a huge funk, but I can see why it happened in this case. It was more damaging to the team to keep him.

                              Best of luck against UConn!

Rough going these days, man. At least UConn should give you a fighting chance. They're probably not much better than you are, talent-wise. I'd probably roll with Deshawn Harris going forward. He seems to give you a better chance to win. Poinsette seems too conservative to me.

I've never seen a WR have 19 pancake blocks before. That's ridiculous.
