Re: Wyoming | The Reboot (NCAA 14)

Recruiting layout is clean. Got some really interesting names on there, and I am excited to see how they do for your team in the future, especially Tony Bobo and Paris McFadden

      2019g7: Utah State @ Wyoming

Tight end Caleb Davis practices his toe tap drill while catching one of his two touchdowns.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Another conference game and another win for the Pokes. Wyoming picked up their 3rd straight win over rival Utah State and their 13th consecutive conference win. Things are once again rolling in Laramie.

It was a tie game heading into the 4th quarter, but Wyoming blew Utah State's doors off 24-7 in the penultimate period. Chandler Garrett threw a 39-yard TD pass to Alec Stewart and an 18-yard TD pass to Caleb Davis. Emmett Nash scored on a 21-yard toss sweep. And, Cooper Rothe banged a 28-yard field goal through. The final score, the Garrett-to-Davis TD, was a sort of "eff-you" note to the Aggies in that it was completely unnecessary. Even, unsportsmanlike. Wyoming was up 37-27 with :48 left and Utah State had no timeouts.

Garrett had a nice game for the Pokes. He completed 22/34 passes (64%) for 283 yards with three TDs and one INT (157.8 QB rating). The junior QB was very streaky, however. He began the game 8/8, then hit a 2/10 lull with an interception before a 12/16 flurry with all of the touchdown passes. Must be mental.

The Wyoming run game was shut down for most of the game before busting a 28-yarder and a 21-yard TD run in the 4th quarter. Nash ended up with 22 carries for 121 yards (5.5 YPC) and a pair of TDs. For most of the game, he and Wyoming's offensive line were frustrated by Utah State's front. Defensive tackle Christopher 'Unga and linebacker Logan Lee made a bunch of plays for the Aggies. 'Unga made a habit of quick-shedding both the center Donald Young and the right guard Kurtis McCann. Lee and his linebacker buddies were adept at shooting gaps and using leverage to suffocate several plays.

Although the box score suggests that Utah State quarterback Cade Smith had his way with Wyoming, that's not the whole story. Sure, Smith put up high volume numbers: 36/55 (65%) for 380 yards and two TDs vs one INT (131.8 QB rating). And, sure, he led USU to 27 first downs. And, yes, he allowed the Aggies to run 92 plays compared to Wyoming's 69 plays. But, he was sacked an incredible six times just in the first half. Smith was sacked eight times in total. Justin Hagemann had a pair of sacks and was in Smith's face all game. A long list of other Pokes got into the sack column on a variety of blitzes.

Despite all those plays and all that passing yardage, it rarely felt like Utah State was dangerous. More opportunistic than anything. Their offense basically amounted to getting sacked or stuffed on early downs and then completing a miracle pass on 3rd and long. The Aggies threw a bunch of short out routes to Corey Mitchell, who had 14 receptions and 158 yards. They also had a devil of a time running the football. Lead back Thomas Felder carried 17 times for just 52 yards (3.0 YPC) and the scrambling QB carried 19 times for 12 yards (0.6 YPC) due to all those sacks.

It was a big visit week for the Pokes, too. Nearly ten recruits were on campus for this one and they had to like what they saw.

        2019g8: Boise State @ Wyoming

Reserve defensive tackle Youhanna Ghaifan claps it up after Wyoming smashes yet another Boise State play.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- That was just brutal. Wyoming's defense completely destroyed Boise State's offense and there were no survivors. It makes sense--a Bronco should be no match for a Cowboy.

Pick any stat that you want and Boise State was horrible in it. They entered the redzone zero times, converted on 9% of their 3rd down opportunities, failed to crack 100 yards of total offense, and scored zero points on offense. Truly miserable. Shhhhh, nobody tell them that Wazzu scored 67 points on this same defense earlier this season.

One Dan Horner seems to be the downfall of the Broncos, if not the entire civilized world. The redshirt sophomore quarterback simply has no feel for the position despite his 88 OVR. This is the same QB that led Boise State to a 2-10 record and completed 41.6% of his passes last year. He "led" Boise State in the same way that a cliff leads a lemming.

Horner completed 6/20 (30%) for 43 yards, no TDs, and two picks (28.0 QB rating). The Orange, Texas native regressed from his already not-so-good outing last year against the Pokes. Horner pitched in five carries for zero yards because LOL.

In all fairness, Horner shouldn't take all of the blame. Boise State's playcalling was probably worse. Pounding the ball on 1st and 2nd down while down two scores in the 4th quarter was a favorite of the offensive coordinator. The Broncos were near the bottom of the NCAA in offense last year. And while they've improved to middle of the pack, I'd give OC Kirk Ciarrocca his pink slip immediately.

What the Broncos have been able to do, however, is bottle up Wyoming's offense. This was also true last season in a hard fought 21-14 Wyoming win. Boise held the Pokes to a season low 23 points in the present game, despite being outgained 350 to 99 and Wyoming possessing the ball for a nasty 30:30 to Boise's 9:30. The defense even scored the team's only points on an 84-yard Marcus Hopkins pick-six. That pass was the single worst thrown ball of the entire dynasty--thrown eight yards behind on a slant route--but credit to Boise for capitalizing.

What Wyoming did, despite it not coming easy, was pound the football. The Pokes carried it a season-high 59 times for 241 yards. And they nearly had a pair of backs cross the 100 yard threshold. Emmett Nash toted 33 times for 129 yards (3.9 YPC) and a TD; Mike Green II handled the rock 22 times for 92 yards (4.1 YPC). The two backs combined for 88 yards after first contact with some gritty running between the tackles.

Chandler Garrett, who is 3rd in the NCAA in passing yardage, basically took the game off. And then he got knocked out with a sprained pectoral late in the 3rd quarter of a 13-7 game, but shouldn't miss any games. Backup QB Terry Brooks threw exactly one pass the rest of the way and it was woefully off target. So, back to the run game it was.

With the conference win train reaching 14 games, choo choo, the division title is appearing more and more likely. Wyoming has four games remaining, but really only needs to beat Air Force next week and BYU in the season finale to salt away a berth in the MWC Championship Game.

Good to see that the offense has found its balance again, although I wouldn't have minded seeing Chandler backdoor his way into the Heisman conversation haha, although I think that is over and done with. You should be seeing the rankings fairly soon I would think, which would be stellar and maybe for the first time???

Also, I love your recruiting writeups! Always have me chuckling, and still plenty of good information spread around. That big WR could put you over the top, but it doesn't seem like you're struggling through the air anyways! The lineman was a huge find to keep strengthening your big mashers up front so you have that ground and pound.

I'm loving this dynasty bro. Went back and read the whole thing. You had a fantastic 2018, congrats on the MWC Championship. Looks like your conference foes can't do much to stop your Cowboys right now. I like the addition of BYU and Idaho, will be fun to see how BYU does.

I think I'm somewhere in the 40-50 range for poll rankings. Still no Top 25 votes...what does a guy have to do? lol

Can never have too many big mashers to play in the trenches. Those are my favorite type of recruits.

Thanks for the comment as always!

Appreciate the comment. Yeah, it's been a little bit of a wrecking ball in conference play of late. I have just enough close ones and late comebacks that it doesn't really feel overpowered though. Boise State should rise again after they get a decent quarterback and I'm hoping some of my rivals push back harder in the future.

I'm looking forward to scheduling some heavier hitters for OOC play in the future. Last season's schedule was pretty light and this one features Wazzu and Mizzou as the 'tough games' when neither team is really doing much in their own conferences. Teams like Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC and others of that ilk would be nice to start a fresh series with.

                2019g9: Wyoming @ Air Force

Wyoming halfback Emmett Nash goes 21 yards for a touchdown and finishes with style points.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- To the untrained eye, this game could've been a repeat of last year's Wyoming-Air Force meeting. Shall we list all the similarities?

                1. Last year, Wyoming started slowly. The Pokes dug a 14-3 hole in the 1st quarter at Falcon Stadium. This year, Wyoming started slowly. The Pokes went down 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter at Falcon Stadium.

                2. Last year, Wyoming completed 17/34 passes. This year, Wyoming completed 17/34 passes.

                3. Last year, the headline picture consisted of Milo Hall diving over the pylon for a TD. This year, the headline picture consisted of Emmett Nash diving over the pylon for a TD.

                4. Last year, the final score was 31-21. This year, the final score was 31-24 (OT).

                5. Last year, Wyoming's win clinched the Mountain Division. This year, Wyoming's win clinched the Mountain Division.

So, uh, yeah there are quite a few similarities here.

One of these days, slow starts are going to get Wyoming beat in a conference game. But, for now, the Pokes have a 15-game MWC winning streak. The last time WYO lost a conference game was to....Air Force back in 2017.

The present game had a strong feeling of "Light a Fire" and "Big Game" skills activated by the AFA coaching staff. The game started horribly for Wyoming as a result. Chandler Garrett had his patented slow start, misfiring on his first four attempts and on six of his first eight. His balls weren't dropping in the right places (heh, insert a that's what she said joke here if you must). For example, his 2nd pick was thrown so precisely into the chest of the Air Force safety that it may well have been on a line tied between two European swallows also carrying a coconut. The safety got in Garrett's face after the INT and said "your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries." Savage.

Garrett finished 17/34 (50%) for 193 yards with one TD three INTs (89.7 QB rating). It was Garrett's lowest rating in any game so far and his first multi-interception game since Nevada six games ago. On some level it must make sense that Air Force has a strong pass defense.

Things were definitely going badly for the Pokes early. Four first half turnovers and trailing 17-7 at halftime. The offense was in the toilet. Air Force's starting halfback Malik Miller was injured and reported to be "knocked out" for the game, but somehow he never left the game. On ther other hand, Wyoming's starting weakside linebacker Cedric Farmer was injured--it turned out to be broken ribs and his season is done.

Even so, Wyoming can't seem to lose right now. After Nash's 21-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter--the quarter's only score--Wyoming was down just 17-14 somehow. The Pokes then took a 21-17 lead when Garrett found Mackey semifinalist Alec Stewart for a score.

Not even 30 seconds later, Air Force had driven the length of the field, scored a touchdown, and had a 24-21 lead. Wyoming would tie with a 43-yard Cooper Rothe FG at the 2:36 mark. Interestingly, both teams went on to miss field goals in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter. Overtime.

Wyoming got the ball first and scored easily. It was another rushing TD for Nash.

Trying to equalize, the Falcons leaned heavily on dual threat QB Bryan Raymond. Raymond, as is the tradition for Air Force quarterbacks, was the alpha and omega of their attack. He completed 14/23 (60%) for 148 yards and a TD (129.2 QB rating)--he ran 18 times for 92 yards. Lots of keepers and options.

Ironically, on a 3rd down play the Pokes knocked Raymond out with an injury so they had to try to tie it without their workhorse. The backup came in facing 4th and 6 and....promptly threw the ball out of bounds to seal the game for Wyoming.

Wyoming's pass rush had been solid for most of the game. They sacked Raymond five times, hurried him about a dozen times, tackled him 18 times, and eventually knocked him out. The pressure was clearly too much for the backup QB to handle.

                        2019g10: Hawai'i @ Wyoming

Reserve Wyoming halfback Mike Green II points into the crowd at War Memorial Stadium after bagging the Paniolo Trophy.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- SNOW GAME!!! Woooooooooo. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. Snow game!

Wyoming's win streak reaches eight games as their conference winning streak hits 16 in a row. Yes, even the weather seems to be on Coach Bohl's side. Hawai'i visiting? Let's dump some snow on 'em!

It's not Groundhog Day, but Chandler Garrett may as well be Bill Murray with all of his repeated slow starts. Garrett badly misfired on his first three attempts, completed none of his first six tries, was 1/9 at one point, and ended up not really trying to throw much afterward. Garrett completed 6/16 (37%) for 67 yards with one TD and one INT (season low 80.7 QB rating). Ah yes, one can almost remember back to a time when Wyoming could pass the ball at will; despite recent struggles, the Pokes entered this game 8th in the nation in passing yardage (291.8 YPG).

But, as the natives in Laramie say: when Garrett's accuracy is away the ground game will play. And play they did. Who needs to throw the ball anyway?

The Wyoming run game set new dynasty highs for both rushing attempts (63) and rushing yardage (365). The previous marks (62 carries and 340 yards) were set in a 30-17 victory over Colorado State last season. Now this is Cowboy Football.

Emmett Nash was a stallion in this one. He carried 30 times for a career best 224 yards (7.4 YPC), including a career long 70-yarder where he was run down from behind just before scoring. The senior running back from Sheridan, Wyoming reached 30+ carries for the 4th time this season. He also set a new school record for rushing TDs in a single season--14--on a go-ahead 5-yard scamper with 6:24 remaining. To say it was a good game for Nash would be a hopeless understatement.

Mike Green II and Milo Hall also saw a fair number of carries. Green II had 16 for 65 yards and a TD; Hall got nine for 62 yards and a TD. Even a couple of wide receivers had multiple carries--Austin Conway and C.J. Johnson--on fly and jet sweeps.

As for the Rainbow Warriors, they were mostly one dimensional. Live by the pass and die by the pass. They did some of both.

Senior quarterback Aaron Zwahlen was either running or throwing on virtually every play. The Modesto, California native went 35/53 (66%) for 406 yards with two TDs and four costly INTs (127.7 QB rating). Zwahlen also ran 13 times for 38 yards. Hawai'i only ran seven plays (out of 73) in which Zwahlen didn't run or pass it himself. Mr. High Volume had spells of being really impressive--he connected with nine different receivers--and instances that crippled his team.

After Wyoming took their 31-27 lead with about six minutes to play, Zwahlen threw a pick to free safety Alijah Halliburton inside the Wyoming 5-yard line at the 4:54 mark. On the next Hawai'i drive, Zwahlen found Wyoming cornerback John Okwoli with 2:46 to play. D'oh.

After the game, Wyoming clocked in at #38 in the country and is finally starting to get a smattering of Top 25 consideration. It's about damn time.

                          2019g11: Idaho @ Wyoming

Fullback-sized wide receiver Weldon Adler fixes to flatten an Idaho DB on the way to the endzone.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The Idaho Vandals stayed with Wyoming for the first half, but ended up losing by three touchdowns.

The Pokes came in riding a massive winning streak and exceeded their 38.4 PPG average (4th in the nation). Quarterback Chandler Garrett had one of his better games in a while: 25/38 (65%) 306 yds with four TDs and one INT (162.9 QB rating). He spread the love with four TD passes to four different receivers: Austin Conway caught six passes for 96 yards; C.J. Johnson caught five balls for 28 yards; Alec Stewart caught four passes for 69 yards; Weldon Adler caught three for 32.

The Idaho defense was a bit stingy at first. The pair of 340 lb defensive tackles, Rashaan Crawford and Mytreal Denson, made running up the middle difficult. But, as the game went on, the Vandal defense was exposed against big plays and edge runs--Emmett Nash continued a string of strong play with 18 carries for 147 yards (8.1 YPC) and a TD.

Defensively, the Pokes struggled to stop senior QB Gunnar Amos. In fact, Amos has given Wyoming problems for two straight years now. After a 151.9 rating and 78% completion last year, Amos topped that by completing 35/40 (87%) for 313 yds with three TDs and one INT (172.9 QB rating). The Vandal signal caller definitely went robo. He only missed on one pass attempt after the first quarter, which was a Tory McCollum interception to end the first half.

Even though the Vandals were moving the ball, they shot themselves in the foot a few times and couldn't score at the pace they needed. Amos' drive-killing INT in the endzone, a turnover on downs in the 4th quarter, a drive that stalled at the 7-yard line resulting in a FG, a lost fumble by running back Denzal Brantley, and an Amos fumble were among the creative ways the Vandals chose not to score. That's how 423 yards of offense and a QB with a 172.9 rating can result in only 24 points.

The entire season has been something of a disappointment for the Vandals--moving into the Mountain West hasn't gone all that smoothly according to the 1-7 conference record.

As for the Pokes, things continue to flow. A nine-game winning streak and 17 straight in conference. Some pretty remarkable stuff. That 5* target must be seriously considering the Pokes now, right?

                            2019g12: Wyoming @ BYU

WYO halfback #44 Emmett Nash outruns the Cougar defense to the goal line and lunges for pylon.

PROVO, Utah -- It's good for college football and especially the Mountain West region that this storied rivalry is being rebooted. Wyoming and Brigham Young University have competed bitterly ever since a 7-0 BYU victory on November 14th, 1922. These two schools have shared the same athletic conference for a good number of years--both were members of the old WAC and then the MWC... and now the MWC once again. The two programs have not done battle since BYU previously left the conference after the 2010 season. BYU leads the overall series 44-30-3, has won seven in a row, and has not lost to Wyoming at home since a 29-27 defeat way back in 1987.

As legendary BYU coach LaVell Edwards once said: "I would rather lose and live in Provo than win and live in Laramie." His team got his wish this time, suffering a 20-point defeat at the hands of the Cowboys. The win makes ten in a row overall and 18 in a row in conference play. It also snaps an ugly seven-game skid at the hands of these same Cougars.

Despite the raucous, night game atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium, BYU was simply overwhelmed. The Cougars looked very dangerous early as senior quarterback Beau Hoge, son of Merril, broke a 67-yard touchdown run on their first possession. But, it was mostly downhill from there.

Hoge plays QB much like his dad played running back--mediocrely. He had a nasty case of scramblitis, which, combined with BYU missing their starting offensive tackles due to injury, created a sack-a-palooza for Wyoming. The Pokes took Hoge down a season high nine times in this game. It was such a heavy barrage that Hoge finished the game with only 62 credited rushing yards despite the 67-yard rush to open the first quarter. Hoge finished 18/26 (69%) for 217 yards with one TD and two INTs (136.6 QB rating). Both of his interceptions came in the Wyoming end zone.

All American linebacker Logan Wilson notched two sacks; DE Justin Hagemann had three sacks; USER-controlled DT Milo McNeil had two sacks; safety Tory McCollum and cornerback John Okwoli had one sack each. Linebacker Jaylon Watson and dimeback Justin Bryant came up with the end zone picks.

Offensively, the Pokes were once again led by the duo of Emmett Nash and Chandler Garrett. Nash topped 7.0 YPC for the 3rd straight game, on 22 carries for 164 yards (7.4 YPC) and a TD. He broke three 20+ yard carries for one of his more explosive outings this season. Garrett was also solid. He completed 24/39 (61%) for 260 yards with one TD and one INT (120.8 QB rating). His receivers didn't help him much either; they dropped seven passes including a really odd four drops by Mackey finalist Alec Stewart. The 244 yards rushing and 260 yards passing is Wyoming's most well rounded offensive performance of the season.

Looking at the team stat sheet, nowhere is it more clear than in the efficiency stats as to how this game was won. Wyoming converted on 14/19 (73%) 3rd downs and had a 100% scoring rate in the red zone. Conversely, BYU converted 3/12 (25%) on 3rd down and 0% (0/2) in the red zone thanks to a pair of interceptions. The Pokes also exactly doubled BYU's time with the ball, 26:40 to 13:20.

Wyoming kicker Cooper Roothe also deserves special mention here. The senior has toiled mostly in obscurity, but will go down as one the best kickers in school history. In this one, he nailed five field goals from 40, 43, 38, 29, and 35-yards away.

With this string of late season conference games all played out, the Pokes will enter the MWC Championship game as winner of the Mountain Division, defeater of the Saxons, and soverign of all England.

Another solid season for your Pokes. Sad to see Hawaii lose...again!

                                2019ccg: Fresno State @ Wyoming

Fresno State hoists the Mountain West Conference Championship Trophy.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Oy vay. The streak had to come to an end sometime, didn't it? Shame it had to end with an overtime thriller at home in the conference title game.

Wyoming beat Fresno State earier in the season by a score of 28-24. In that game, Fresno State was leading 21-0 at halftime, but choked it away. This time, them Dawgs from The Valley were able to finish the job in a game with a 1302 ESPN Classic score. Albeit just barely.

Both teams traded blows throughout much of the first half. Fresno State scored first with a 26-yard field goal; a field goal settled for after failing to capitalize on 1st and goal from the two-yard-line. Wyoming answered with an Emmett Nash two-yard TD run.

Fresno State would score the next 14 points--quarterback Chason Virgil found Darius Murphy for a 12-yard TD. Then Juju Hughes made an incredible pick-six on a play where he covered a two-WR curl-flat combo route all by himself. He dropped to take the curl route away and immediately broke down on the flat route at the precise millisecond Chandler Garrett wound up to throw it. A play to behold. Garrett had started the game 8/8 before that play.

Wyoming struck back with a four-yard C.J. Johnson jet sweep TD run and a pick-six of their own, returned 46 yards by Tory McCollum. The scoring flurry gave a 21-17 Wyoming lead at the half.

However, the Pokes quickly surrendered the momentum. On back to back drives, one right before the half and one immediately after, Nash fumbled away the possession. His ball security hadn't been much of an issue this season, but it was a big problem here. Fresno would miss a 51-yard FG after the first fumble, but the second Nash fumble set off a 21-point avalanche in the 3rd quarter.

Bryson Oglesby scored on a two-yard TD run, then Virgil found tight end Donte Coleman for a 12-yard strike, and Virgil found Murphy again for an 11-yard touchdown hookup. Wyoming did manage a Nash two-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter, but headed to the 4th quarter losing 38-28.

Urged on by the home crowd, Wyoming did manage to crawl back to a 38-38 tie by the 1:25 mark of the 4th quarter. In fact, the Pokes had a shot to win the game in regulation. After stopping a confused Fresno State possession and getting the ball back with 22 seconds left, Wyoming rode a frighteningly efficient aerial attack into field goal range. And then an iced Cooper Rothe banged a field goal attempt off the right upright. He missed it! He missed it! And that meant overtime.

No big deal, right? Wyoming hasn't been losing any games lately much less conference games...right?

After losing the coin toss, the Pokes gained the ball. Unfortunately, a reeling Wyoming offense turned a 1st and goal from the five-yard-line into a 33-yard field goal after a sack and failing to convert on 3rd and 2. Coach Bohl made a difficult decision to take three points rather than try to convert on 4th down and short. In retrospect, knowing how this game played out, it was the wrong call. Actually, in real time, knowing how the Wyoming secondary was shredded all game, it was also the wrong call.

On Fresno's very first play in overtime, Virgil hit 5'10" 167 lb WR Kevin Jones, who made one man miss and dragged two others into the end zone for the winning score.

Congratulations to Fresno State on ending Wyoming's streak and being the first team to beat Wyoming twice in this dynasty. Congrats to Wyoming on what has been an incredible run as well. What bowl will it be for these Pokes?
