Thanks, man. I sort of thought Texas State would be a win, so the outcome was a surprise.

Tech is something like 3-3 right now with losses to quality teams like Texas and Baylor.

Yeah, USER controlled errors are the worst kind. Too true. A team can only win so many close games before things turn the other way.

I think this team might have a real shot at the conference title game though. Boise State is usually the big bully in my division, but last I checked they are 0-6 right now! Wow. And with big bad Wyoming heading to the Blue soon enough.

HUGE Win! Obviously a game that you should be winning, but there's nothing wrong with a big confidence booster to send you into the rest of the conference season. Couple decent recruits for your program as well, that's the real key to getting your program to where you want it to be.

Good job getting it done versus wofford. That's what is supposed to happen against those kind of teams, but good job not overlooking them. The next several weeks could be crucial in gaining bowl eligibility. Good luck against the rams next week

          2018g7: Colorado State @ Wyoming

Wyoming tailback #22 Nico Evans splits the Ram defense under the lights for a chunk play. Evans carried 30 times for an even 200 yards.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- And another hated rival bites the dust. Getting revenge on a Colorado State team that beat them 37-24 in Fort Collins last year, Wyoming triumphed 30-17 this time around. The win over the Rams elevates the Cowboys to 5-2 (3-0) and most importantly to 2-0 against bitter rivals this season. At halftime, Coach Bohl could be heard mentioning something in the tunnel about "breaking off a Bronze Boot..." and the audio trailed off at that point. Coach may be angling for a part in KitKat commercials.

Much like last year, Colorado State featured a pass-heavy offense. Much like last year, the Rams featured tight end Dalton Fackrell, unrelated (?) to Kyler who played linebacker at Utah State and now plays for the Green Bay Packers, along with wide receiver Marcus Wilson. Fackrell caught nine passes for 87 yards. However, Wilson did a lot less damage this time around, hauling in four passes for 56 yards whereas he caught six passes for 129 yards and three TDs last season. Part of the reason for the discrepancy was a new quarterback for State. Collin Hill was plenty accurate/robo for the Rams at 33/39 (84%) with 327 yards and a touchdown (148.1 QB rating), but three of his misses were actually completions to the other team. The turnovers cost his team possessions/yards/scoring chances. For example, the Nick Stevens-led Rams ran 70 plays last year, but due to the turnovers CSU only ran 59 plays this time. The difference played a dramatic role as CSU gained 106 fewer yards (509 vs 403) and scored 20 fewer points (37 vs 17). Interestingly, CSU also started a defensive tackle at offensive tackle due to injuries rampant at the position. Redshirt junior Josh Nunez held up pretty well playing right tackle considering the circumstances.

Wyoming knew early on that they'd need to lean heavily on their run game. Perhaps jittery in the big rivalry game, Cowboy quarterback Nick Smith made three "auto-overthrows" in his first three passing attempts. Given the early issues there, Wyoming's run/pass ratio ended up at 62 rushes against 20 passes. Running backs were fed. Star halfback Nico Evans carried a heavy load making an even 30 carries for an even 200 yards and a touchdown. With a long run of only 19 yards, it was all in a day's work for Evans. There were more than enough carries to go around: Emmett Nash carried 12 times for 57 yards; Nick Smith rushed nine times for 51 yards; Milo Hall carried six times for 24 yards; and battering ram Mike Green II got five tough carries for eight tough yards and a touchdown. The end result was a massive 11:16 time of possession advantage and 340 yards on the ground. The Pokes also set themselves up to go 4/4 on 4th down conversions, despite inefficiency on 3rd down, due to rarely getting behind the chains.

The Pokes were once again without a pair of starters--linebacker Logan Wilson and wide receiver Austin Conway. So once again Cedric "Darth" Farmer patrolled the middle of the field quite competently. Farmer made 11 tackles, one tfl, and an interception. Conway's injury replacement, Kellen Overstreet, paced the Pokes with three catches for 44 yards.

Starting cornerbacks Antonio Hull and Anthony Makransky also picked off Colorado State once apiece. The trio of interceptions came as a result of pressure on the quarterback although no sacks were recorded.

Going forward, the Wyoming passing game will need to improve if they're to make a serious run at the Mountain West title game. Nick Smith has been on a roller coaster ride--some games he's nailing corner routes with aplomb and in others he seems incapable of making even simple throws. Smith completed 10/20 passes (50%) for 76 yards a TD and no interceptions (98.4 QB rating).

The Pokes will travel to Boise State next week to tangle with the shockingly winless Broncos.

Yep, gotta smack those FCS schools when they pop up. Recruiting is a huge issue this year because my team is full of upperclassmen.

Thanks for the comment. That game could've easily been a "trap game" with CSU and Boise State up next. Probably had something to do with my team being a 77 OVR and them being a 63 OVR, but we had some nice results passing the ball for a change.

              Midseason Update

The home win versus Colorado State brought an avalanche of commits with it. Seven fresh commitments were made during the week.

              *** (#54 ATH) Ross Johnson
              *** (#149 WR) Mike Clemons
              *** (#166 WR) Cory Robertson
              *** (#111 OT) Kris Hayward
              ** (#129 OT) Nicholas Henderson
              ** (#73 C) gem Jeremy Noble
              * (#89 TE) JUCO Andrew Roberts

Among this interesting crop of recruits is 3* ATH Ross Johnson from Sunset, UT. Wyoming easily beat back a lazy Penn State incursion into Mountain West turf. The Nittany Lions may have been sizing Johnson up at linebacker given their history, but Coach Bohl is not 100% sure how to best deploy this particular ATH. Despite Johnson's non-quarterbackian 6'0" stature, the coaching staff is intrigued by Johnson as a dual threat QB. Take a look at the attributes...what do you see? He's a bit of a freak (4.50 40-time, 410-lb bench press, 655-lb squat) and not in a 70s soul singer sort of way.

The spate of new commitments brings the total number of committed Pokes in the 2019 recruiting class to 12. Given that there will be 24 players graduating, this means the class is now 50% full. A look at the current state of the board can be had below.

A quick note on the number of wild card "WC" recruits above. The Wyoming Cowboys are big on staying true to their region when recruiting so they only allow themselves up to two 3* recruits outside of their region per cycle ("wild card" also applies to uninterested players within the region). However, Wyoming didn't fulfill this quota when filling the 2017 class partly because it was such a small class. Therefore, the Pokes are allowing themselves three "wild cards" this year to even it out and to fill out the larger class.

That there are four recruits on the current board listed as "wild card" is due to the fact that Texas heavies Texas Tech and Baylor just entered 3* HB Eric Franklin's recruitment with their massive bonus points. Coach Bohl has been salivating over the 6'0" 230 lb running back from Hurst, TX. With that size, 4.44 speed, and 410-lb bench press strength that would make some high school linebackers look weak--how could you blame him? Unfortunately for the Pokes' sizeable lead, Texas Tech and Baylor both have visits upcoming and Franklin's recent visit to Laramie failed to seal the deal. To make a short story long, the Pokes are interested in 3* OT Ronald Concepcion as an alternative to Franklin when the Texas schools inevitably reel him in. So they will not sign both, but rather one or the other to get to the three "wild card" limit.

Unfortunately it appears that Wyoming is not having good luck reeling in recruits named "Eric" atop their recruiting board.

The initial BCS rankings are out and Notre Dame and UCLA are on a collision course. It should be an epic game of Kizers vs Rosens. There are about a half dozen other teams that would like to derail that fantasy.

Another big win and you look well on the way to a bowl season, but I'm very intrigued by this Johnson character. He looks like a solid LB prospect (although those terrible moves and block shedding kind of scare me), but he looks even more promising as a QB. Those running stats are unreal, he's a guy you could really build around under center. I guess it really just depends on how you look depth wise at each position as for where you end up settling for him.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see. In part, it may depend on his awareness at each position which I won't know about until the offseason change position screen. I have an All-American middle backer who should be coming back for his senior year and I have his replacement (a redshirt soph. next year) as well. On the other hand, I am losing my top 2 QBs to graduation so the need and the intrigue both might lead to this ATH becoming a QB. Plus those block shedding marks are pretty atrocious as you mentioned.

I don't think I've ever had an ATH that was powerful enough to be a linebacker and nifty enough to be a QB/WR before. I've seen a good amount of QB/DB type ATH's before. One cool thing about the recruiting in this game.

                    2018g8: Wyoming @ Boise State

Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl stands stoically during a close game at Boise State while #18 "The Scarecrow" keeps watch.

BOISE, Idaho -- The Wyoming Cowboys were more than happy to extend Boise State's misery to an unfathomable 0-7 record. So much for the Smurf Turf.

The Broncos have tanked brutally hard this season after winning the Mountain West Conference last season. It's quite clear the graduations of quarterback Brett Rypien and tailback Jeremy McNichols hit Boise State much harder than anticipated. Boise has been dreadful on offense, scoring a laughable 9.8 PPG (last in FBS), and nearly as bad on defense, allowing 38.0 PPG (#123 in FBS). The result is that the Broncos have face planted and the MWC Mountain Division has swung wide open for all comers to try and conquer.

Coach Bohl and his Cowboys declined to shed a tear (or get a teardrop tattoo) for Boise, but it was a hotly contested game nonetheless. A 1-yard Mike Green II touchdown run with 7:53 to play in the 4th quarter broke the 14-14 deadlock.

Both teams were relatively balanced. Wyoming passed it 32 times versus 47 runs. Boise State rushed 29 times and passed 38 times. The key difference was in the efficiency stats. Wyoming scored touchdowns on both of their trips to BSU's "blue zone," succeeded on both 4th down tries, and converted a decent 8-for-17 (47%) on 3rd down. On the contrary, Boise State went 0-for-2 in the red zone, failed on their only 4th down try, and were severely bottled up on 3rd down, at 3-for-13 (23%). Despite the inefficient play, the Broncos committed no turnovers.

Individually, the players that Wyoming rely on were able to step up. Quarterback Nick Smith played within himself and had a relatively clean game as a result. Smith completed 21/32 passes (65%) for 228 yards with a TD and an INT (129.5 QB rating). He was also responsible for the play of the game when he got outside the pocket and torched Boise State's coverage with a 42-yard TD pass to Joseph Parker down the right sideline to get on the board 1:04 before halftime. Smith carried 11 times for 48 yards, continuing to put defenses on notice that he can run or throw.

The obligatory Nico Evans paragraph is upon us. Evans has played in all eight Wyoming games this season. Evans has topped 100 yards rushing in all of them. Evans is sitting on 1109 yards rushing so far this season. Not only has the junior back become a team leader and a conference leader, but if his team got any hype at all--he'd be a fringy Heisman Trophy contender. Evans found Boise State's rush defense to be much better than they were 'on paper'. He made 26 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown, but the 4.1 YPC is his lowest of the season thus far. Once again, the team reached 200 yards rushing.

It was the second game in a row where the Pokes did not record a sack. This coming on the heels on an eight-sack explosion in a loss to Texas State and a five-sack domination of Wofford. Wyoming did, however, make Boise State quarterback Dan Horner uncomfortable early on.

Horner, a redshirt freshman game-generated QB, was all over the place with his [in]accuracy. The first half was a comical display of overthrows, underthrows, and a constellation of inaccurate passing. It was pretty clear by halftime exactly why Boise State has fallen off so dramatically. Even so, the 83-OVR quarterback from Orange, TX came out and competed in the 2nd half. He actually was borderline "robo" therein and kept Boise in the game. Horner finished 21/38 (55%) for 234 yards with a TD and no INTs (115.6 QB rating). Not a bad outcome after a dismal 1st half.

Alexander Mattison was the best player in the game for the Broncos. The junior tailback was effective running the rock, gaining 91 yards on 19 carries (46 yards after 1st contact). He also caught Boise State's only touchdown of the game while making five catches for 34 yards overall.

If Boise State is to pick up a win this season, they are going to need more of Mattison and less of Horner.

For their part, Wyoming is currently undefeated in conference play and occupies the catbird seat in the Mountain Division. A huge game against 2nd place Air Force looms in the season finalé a few weeks down the road.

                      2018g9: New Mexico @ Wyoming

Wyoming defensive backs #28 Andrew Wingard and #13 John Okwoli celebrate after Wingard makes an interception.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- There's no place like Bama. There's no place like Bama. There's no place like Bama *click*..That was first year Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt's train of thought as his Lobos got run over by Wyoming in a stunning 49-28 blowout at War Memorial Stadium.

A three-game winning streak was extended to four for the still-undefeated-in-conference-play Pokes. Coach Bohl's team ran rampant on their nine offense possessions. Aside from one punt and one fumbled kickoff return, it was nothing but touchdowns, baby.

A cool seven-touchdown performance made OC Andy Kotelnicki look like a god. Quarterback Nick Smith played mistake free: 19/33 (57%) for 187 yards and four TDs (145.1 QB Rating). Nico Evans again topped 100 yards; he carried 21 times for 333 feet (5.2 YPC) and a TD. Of special note in the Cowboy 267-yard rushing attack were backups Milo Hall and Emmett Nash. Hall only needed eight carries to gain 83 yards; Nash gobbled up 40 yards on just four carries. Wyoming averaged a nifty 6.1 YPC in thoroughly overwhelming New Mexico's defensive front. Just ask Wyoming left tackle Zach Wallace who racked up eight pancakes.

And what a trip it was playing a Lobo team that has a completely different identity since last season. Last year's Lobos were a run-unbalanced team that rushed 43 times for 271 yards in their 27-17 triumph over Wyoming. This year's Lobos obtained only 56 rushing yards and went over 300 yards passing using a more pro-style approach.

Redshirt senior quarterback Jajuan Lawson acquitted himself fairly well, completing 25/31 (80%) for 327 yards with one TD and two INTs (166.9 QB rating). Lawson, a scrambler from Petaluma, CA was certainly not recruited to play quarterback in this type of offense. He didn't really factor into the Lobo run game and finished with a negligible 15 yards on seven carries.

None of the Lobo running backs really showed much running the football. Other than perhaps that they really miss Daryl Chestnut who graduated after last season. James Williams rushed 21 times for only 44 yards. Diquon Woodhouse got one carry and was stuffed for minus-five yards.

New Mexico did, however, get strong play from their receiving corps. Almost like discovering a muscle they didn't even know they had. Patrick Reed caught three balls for 80 yards including a 54-yard TD pass. Matt Quarells made seven catches for 78 yards. Delane Hart-Johnson, perhaps the favorite Lobo target, added seven catches for 114 yards. They mostly got what they wanted when they wanted it. The only exception was a pair of interceptions by the Wyoming defense.

Wyoming's win makes it an uphill climb for Lobos to obtain a bowl berth. At 4-4 (2-2), Pruitt's team will need to beat two of Colorado State, Boise State, Utah State, and Hawai'i to get to six wins. And they'll probably need some more good fortune to get into a bowl game.

The Cowboys are already bowl eligible and still have no losses in conference play. With a massive final game of the season at Air Force looming, Coach Bowl's team has their sights set higher.

Big wins! Great to get bowl eligible and who knows maybe get a shot at the MWC title??? The rushing attack is just disgusting, and hopefully these big performances have maybe swayed a "particular" running back back your way???

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The Wyoming Cowboys are one confident football team. Something about winning five games in a row and being 6-0 in conference play will do that for a team. Wyoming edged the Nevada Wolf Pack 30-28 in a game that was closer than some fans attending Wyoming's Senior Day really cared to see.

First with the stats: both teams moved the ball efficiently. Both teams eclipsed 400 yards of total offense. Wyoming played a bit cleaner (zero turnovers) than did the Wolf Pack (three turnovers) and that proved to be the difference. But, still, despite Wyoming being +3 in turnovers and holding a three-to-one advantage in T.O.P. Nevada would not roll over.

Speaking of turnovers, a certain All-American middle linebacker made his return from injury for Wyoming. Logan Wilson proceeded to end the first and second Wolf Pack drives of the game via the interception. The first one came literally as he was standing on his own goal line and cut under a slant route. Welcome back.

Nevada was dangerous. They possessed the ball for only 10:36, but still scored 28 points on the road. And 14 points in the 4th quarter alone.

Wolf Pack lead back Blake Wright was a menace and was rarely brought down before making a double digit gain. Wright carried 16 times for 120 yards (7.5 YPC) with a 14-yard rushing touchdown mixed in with 4:34 remaining in the 3rd quarter--down 24-7 at the time, this scamper really ignited Nevada's furious comeback attempt. Good riddance to the redshirt senior from Fresno, CA as he graduates this year.

On two of Nevada's other scores, quarterback Ty Gangi romped into the endzone from 5- and 8-yards out while Wyoming's secondary attempted to bring him down by blinking aggressively at him. It wasn't the prettiest game from Gangi, who was listed as probable with a sprained knee before the game, but he was effective at times. Gangi completed 17/28 (60%) for 259 yards with one TD and three INTs (128.7 QB rating). One of the interceptions was on a Hail Mary attempt before the half, so it was not very costly. And his 44-yard TD strike to senior wide receiver Andrew Celis made some Wyoming fans physically ill. At that point, it was a narrow 30-28 Wyoming lead with 3:40 remaining--Nevada was riding a 21-6 run to put the heat on Coach Bohl's squad.

So, milk clock, you say? That's Wyoming's specialty!

Fortunately, Nevada's offense would not see the football again.

Wyoming's maniacal devotion to the run game helped them through. They rushed 52 times for 244 yards (4.7 YPC) despite being held below 5.0 yards-per-carry for one of the few times all season. Nico Evans got 27 of those carries for 144 yards (5.3 YPC); quarterback Nick Smith 11 for 53 yards and a TD; Milo Hall seven for 20 yards; Emmett Nash four for 19 yards; and Mike Green II received three carries for eight yards and a TD plunge on 4th-and-goal. Wyoming's stable is truly a Wrestlemania Royal Rumble of rushers with Nico being the Big Boss Man.

The Cowboy passing game had one of its better showings as Nick Smith continues to progress through his senior season. Smith hit on 23/28 (82%) for 183 yards and a touchdown. It was the second straight game without a turnover by Cue Ball.

The Pokes will travel to San Diego State and then to Air Force after a bye week. The only thing that stands between Coach Bohl and a division title is the Falcons. If successful against Air Force, the only thing then standing between Da Coach and a conference title would either be Fresno State or a rematch with the Aztecs.

Wyoming's recruiting class continues to grow. With these six fresh commitments, the class size now stands at 18.

A pair of DTs were added with 2* (#112 DT) Jamar Kent and 2* (#123 DT) Elton Jenkins.

Kent, a 6'3" 282 lb prospect, also received offers from UNLV, Boise State, and Nevada. Kent visited Nevada, his home state school, but it wasn't enough to sway him from his Wyoming leanings. Unfortunately Kent busted to a 54 OVR (-6) upon looking more closely at his game tape. He doesn't have the size or strength to play defensive tackle in Wyoming's scheme. He also probably doesn't have the athleticism to play DE. However, Kent will be one to watch, after a redshirt year of course, because Wyoming is losing both of its starting DTs to graduation. He may get playing time by default.

Jenkins, the other DT recruit, is the only Wyoming product on the board this cycle. And this makes this author sad . Jenkins is already shaped like a DT at 6'1" and 285 lbs, but he'll need to get closer to 300 lbs to really factor in. After seeing more film, the coaching staff is really not that enthusiastic about his strength or athletic ability, but only that. Otherwise he'll work out just fine. Unfortunately, and similarly to Kent above, Jenkins busted to a 50 OVR (-9) after a closer look at his tape. We'll see how he develops. Perhaps Utah offered him a schollie for a reason?

After losing out on 5* DT Eric Newsome in the previous cycle, getting busts for both DT recruits here sort of feels like the game is just rubbing it in. Kicking me in the balls...

The linebacker situation is looking better than the defensive line. For starters, Wyoming's depth there is much better and not all graduating. And then there's this trio of recruits that's not bad. The trio includes 2* (#135 OLB) Mike Woods, 2* (#151 OLB) Derek Brunner, and 2* (#99 MLB) Walter Thibodeaux.

Woods, originally from Bozeman, MT, did not boast an impressive offer sheet. However, upon further scouting, he looks like a future starter with 66 OVR (+4). He'll need to work on his wrapping up and tackling, but Woods has good speed (78 SPD), adequate strength (72 STR), a powerful hit (79 HPW), and can cover (72 MCV, 73 ZCV). The Montanan also has great size for a true freshman LB at 6'3" 242 lbs.

Brunner is a bit undersized at 6'4" 213 lbs, but that's not unusual for a true freshman linebacker. He'll redshirt, of course. New Mexico State, Kent State, Louisiana Tech, and Texas State were keeping tabs on Brunner so he's very lightly regarded: 60 OVR (-1). This Californian does have impressive speed (80 SPD) and some explosiveness (87 ACC), but will need to work on everything else. Will likely be a depth player barring some unforseen circumstances.

The third backer, Thibodeaux, is a 6'1" 226 lb specimen from Oklahoma City. None of the Oklahoma schools were active in his recruitment, which is a bit of a red flag, but "specimen" is a good word for describing him. He's a bit of an athletic freak: 80 SPD, 82 ACC, 80 JMP, 77 STR, 75 BSH, 80 STA. Tackling, coverage, and change of direction will be areas to work on, but the coaching staff is much higher on Thibs than his tape would suggest: 58 OVR (-1). Very raw, but likely to see significant action as early as his redshirt sophomore year.

Among this batch of recruits--all penciled in for defense--is a safety named (for the time being, heh..) Tyler Stallings. Stallings, a 2* (#68 FS) from Tahlequah, OK is impressively-sized at 6'3" 216 lbs. In fact, there's even money that he grows into a linebacker. Stallings was lightly recruited and that's a bit baffling after looking closely at his game film. A smooth athlete for a safety (80 SPD, 84 AGI, 85 ACC), Stallings can also tackle (69 TAK) and cover (66 MCV, ZCV, and PRS). Likely to become a starter down the road and the coaching staff liked him more the more they saw: 62 OVR (+3).

Author's Note 1 -- Scouting is only performed after a commitment is given.
Author's Note 2 -- All of these recruits will be renamed in the offseason.

Getting a bit ahead of myself here because I haven't posted the San Diego State game yet (I will tomorrow), but I just played the Air Force game after the SDSU game and recorded it to video....my question is, assuming I can figure out how to upload it (lol, I am old), would anyone be interested in watching the video of that game? My thinking is the video capture could give some of you guys who are following a nice window into my play calling, stick skillz (or lack thereof), whether you think I am a "sim" player or a "cheeser" etc.

To me I like the addition of videos for the reason you mentioned. Big reason I added it to my Dynasty to give followers another way to look inside my program. Uploading is very easy, if you have questions just shoot me a message. The biggest thing for me is editing the videos which takes some time but once you get the hang of it and how you want to do it you develop a rhythm of getting it done quicker.
