That's a nice way to get the first W of the season. Playing a rival can never be overlooked. Going 100% in the Red Zone and converting 61% on 3rd Downs goes a long way

Talk about spreading the love! Looks like you've got a ton of options in the rushing game, so hopefully you can keep the ground and pound offense going in the coming weeks.

Always good to feed a lot of mouth's in the running game in a big win and on the road nonetheless. Like how you said the team is finding their identity as a winner. They know what they do well and they stick to it.

Always love a good rushing game. Nice win for the Pokes, I hadn't realized this is your first win by more than once score until you pointed it out. Defense had another strong showing as well keeping Utah State from having the luxury of running the ball and then punishing the passing game as a result.

            2018g4: UNLV @ Wyoming

Wyoming wide receiver #80 James Price hauls in a long touchdown pass down the seam.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- It seemed as though a bit of good fortune in recent weeks had the Wyoming Cowboys downright aching for some fresh adversity. They turned the ball over via the interception on their opening two possessions. Later, Wyoming survived a sequence of consecutive plays that included a drop, an "auto-overthrow," and a tipped, shoestring interception--it was quarterback Nick Smith's third INT of the contest. "Cue ball," as he's known around the locker room, was responsible for four turnovers and has had trouble hanging onto the ball. Finally, the Pokes survived a pair of failed UNLV Hail Mary attempts.

However, the key word in the preceding paragraph, other than "cue" and "ball," is "survived." Despite Wyoming's best self-defeating tendencies, they proved to be one point better than the Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels. With 25 seconds remaining, Smith thrust the football into the belly of Nico Evans, who plunged in for a touchdown from two yards out for the tie. Cooper Rothe put the mint on the pillow with the extra point to allow the Pokes to prevail 35-34 in front of their home fans.

Wyoming only ran the ball 46 times for 238 yards in this contest--the first time they've dipped below 50 rushing attempts this season. Perhaps that had something to do with falling behind 10-0 halfway through the first quarter. Perhaps offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki is trying to see if there's a possibility of becoming more balanced before the heart of the conference season. Or perhaps there was a pair of offensive recruits in attendance that wanted to see Wyoming's passing game put up 250 yards. Hmmmm.

Whatever the reasons, "Cue Ball" did show signs of life, despite all the turnovers. He connected with James Price on a 33-yard TD pass to get on the board with 1:57 left in the first quarter. Then again, when he found Austin Conway for a 14-yard TD pass early in the second quarter. Smith finished the game 22 of 36 (61%) for 250 yards (121.1 QB rating) and added 46 yards rushing on eight carries. Hitting 250 yards on the last pass of the game was extra fulfilling as Patrick Novak (3* #34 OG) and Mike Clemons (3* #149 WR) left feeling like they got their official visit's worth.

Carey Harvey (3* #11 SS) was also in attendance, but he couldn't care less about the offensive stats and was a little bummed that winning wasn't the total focus of the game. To which, this author responded (to himself...) "whatever, bro even though you haven't been scouted, it looks like you have D-rated speed and I don't even know if I still want you on my recruiting board anyway."

Aside from being opportunistic, UNLV and their discount Ohio State uniforms did not leave a favorable impression. On the road and with a woefully undersized defensive line and a 77-OVR sophomore quarterback, the Rebels did what they could. What they could generally amounted to quarterback Armani Rogers scrambling and 3rd down screen passes. In an interesting bit of coaching, UNLV went for it on 4th and 3 from their own 32-yard line right before halftime. The Rebels did not convert, but time expired in the half. Rogers was the alpha and the omega of UNLV's offense. The 6'5" quarterback from Los Angeles completed 16 of 23 passes for 153 yards and ran 18 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Rogers had a long rush of 46 yards and fumbled twice (losing neither).

Standout players for Wyoming included halfback Nico Evans and SDE Carl Granderson. Wyoming's lead back eclipsed both 20 carries and 100 yards for the fourth straight game and ranks seventh in the country with 552 rushing yards. Granderson recorded two sacks and three tackles-for-loss as he had a busy day of chasing a scrambling quarterback around.

Wyoming is now 3-1 with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

Yeah, I like having a primary back but if I plan on running ~50 times per game, the load needs to be shared. The team definitely has a run-first mentality. Thanks for checking in.

I think that's going to be a key. Sticking to the gameplan and forcing the other team to adapt. When the team struggles it's usually because of trying to balance the run/pass ratio too much.

It was an odd feeling. Usually it's a 40 minute struggle (10 min quarters) to edge out the cpu so having the game won in the 3rd quarter was nice. The backups got a few reps.

Efficiency is the key. I've found that I can overcome losing the turnover battle as long as the team is converting on 3rd down and in the red zone.

I don't want to jinx anything, but an appearance in the MWC championship game would be a nice way to close out season 2 here. Just need to keep clubbing conference foes.

                      Crootin'

It's still very early in the cycle, but Wyoming's 2019 recruiting class has received its first commits.

The first to commit was 3* OG (#34 G) and Lynwood, CA native Patrick Novak. Novak attended the UNLV game this past week and apparently was excited about what he saw. Novak had scholarship offers from New Mexico State and San Jose State, but he was a strong Cowboy lean.

Novak brings prototypical size for an offensive lineman at 6'6" 303 lbs. He's athletic enough and with the right size/length to kick out to tackle if needed. He also has a nasty attitude that would suit him well in a phone booth with an enemy defensive tackle. Novak's main strengths are his size, his quick first step, and his run blocking ability. He'll need to improve his strength and footwork. By rule, this youngster will redshirt next year.

Coach Bohl has made it a point to recruit guys that have the size and disposition to play more than one position on the offensive line--and three years from now let the chips fall where they may. Wyoming will graduate two guards and two tackles after the 2018 season so this is an important commitment. Hopefully one of many more offensive linemen to come this cycle.

The Pokes also coaxed a commitment from one of their two QB targets this cycle--Ryan Long. Long is a consensus 3* (#53 QB, pocket passer) from Murray, Utah. Coach Bohl made quite a few trips West on I-80 to keep Long in the fold and prevent the evil Brigham Young recruiters from making inroads on a recruit in their own back yard. Wyoming had to beat out exactly who you'd think to secure a Utah kid's commitment--BYU, Utah, and Utah State all offered scholarships while Colorado State, Idaho, and Boise State were assessing the situation. But, alas, there would be no flip and Long is a future Cowboy.

Long doesn't possess prototypical size for a passing QB at 6'1", but he can take some hits (and dish some out) at 216 lbs. Long's standout attribute is clearly his strong arm (84 THP). Most of his other tools need refining although he's never going to be much of a dual threat.

With both Nick Smith and Josh Allen graduating after the current season, and only having two other scholarship QBs on the roster, Long could hypothetically see action as a true freshman.

Author's Note 1 -- Scouting is only performed after a commitment is given.
Author's Note 2 -- All of these recruits will be renamed in the offseason.

                        2018g5: Wyoming @ Texas State

Texas State quarterback #1 L.G. Williams surveys the field.

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Sooner or later their luck was going to run out. Already having eeked out one-point wins against Idaho and UNLV, the Pokes were on the wrong end of a last second comeback this time around. Consider this one karmic retribution.

The present game was shaping up as another furious Wyoming comeback--they scored the first 14 points of the 4th quarter to take a 27-23 lead--until Texas State engineered a game winning touchdown drive of their own. Bobcat quarterback L.G. Williams found Tyler Wilson breaking for the back pylon to haul in a 16-yard touchdown pass with six seconds remaining. Texas State began this game winning drive at their own 25 yard line with 57 seconds left and needed to convert on 4th and 13 to even get the drive going. The initialed one went robo on the final drive and finished 17 of 24 (70%) for 178 yards passing and two TDs (160.6 QB rating). Of that total, 78 yards came on the final drive. Williams added 22 carries for 62 yards and was nominally a scramble-aholic.

The reason that Wyoming was frantically in comeback mode was because they had an absolutely disastrous two minute stretch in the 3rd quarter. It started with a missed assignment by a USER-controlled player on a kickoff coverage. Texas State return man T.V. Williams (these guys love their initialed Williamses) broke away untouched for a 98-yard TD return. The very next drive saw another USER mistake where the wrong button was pressed in the passing game, leading to an interception by safety Stephan Johnson. After a Bobcat 50-yard field goal (!), quarterback Nick Smith's very next attempt also mistakenly went to Johnson with this time being a poor read rather than a physical mistake. Even though Texas State didn't score off of the second interception, this two-minute stretch of mistakesville ceded ten points to Wyoming's opponent and cost them a decent shot at scoring on two of their own drives. Of course, all in a game decided by three points.

Wyoming's mistakes were not confined to only that two minute stretch of the 3rd quarter. Austin Conway dropped a trio of passes despite being relatively useful with four receptions for 71 yards. In fact, the game began with a drop on the very first play and then an "auto-overthrow" on the second play to sort of set the tone. Also contributing was the normally dynamic Wyoming red zone offense only racking up three TDs in six visits and the run game being held below 200 yards and 5.0 YPC for the first time this season.

It certainly wasn't all bad for the Cowboys though. They were a play away from winning. The Cowboy pass rush was ferocious up until the final drive. L.G. Williams was sacked a remarkable eight times, with about half of those coming on ill-advised, premature scramble attempts. Leading the rush was USER-controlled defensive tackle Sidney Malauulu with 3.5 sacks. As the game progressed, Malauulu got wise to Williams always scrambling to his dominant hand side and got sacks or disengaged to help his teammates get sacks as he moved to close lanes down.

At least it wasn't a conference loss? The now 3-2 Cowboys are still undefeated in conference play (2-0).

Oh, and someone tell Boko the Bobcat that Florida State called and wants their color scheme back...

                                2018g6: Wofford @ Wyoming

Backup tight end #82 Alec Stewart makes his first catch of the year--for a TD.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The Cowboys had a nice time with visiting FCS program Wofford. A five-touchdown win type of nice. It's not a conference win and it's certainly not a quality win against a lowly 63-OVR team. But, it does inch Wyoming closer to bowl eligible.

Wyoming quarterback Nick Smith played the best game of his life. The senior completed 27 of 34 passes (79%) for 246 yds with four TDs and an interception (173.1 QB rating). Even the interception was not really Smith's fault as Wofford's safety made an incredible play--he covered 12 yards in his backpedal while lunging backward and to his right into a full extension dive all while the ball was in transit--on what otherwise would've been an easy TD pass. Smith's touchdown passes were spread out nicely to C.J. Johnson (6-yard slant), Josh Harshman (13-yard out route), Alec Stewart (9-yard corner route), and Kellen Overstreet (11-yard corner route). Overstreet was in because nominal slot man Austin Conway was knocked out early with a broken collarbone (out for ~4 weeks). If a receiver got open in this game, there was a good chance "Cue Ball" was going to find him.

Speaking of injuries, All-NCAA 1st team linebacker Logan Wilson also left the game early. The abdominal strain could sideline him for up to a month. In Wilson's stead, redshirt freshman Cedric Farmer saw plenty of action. The 76-OVR 6'0" 245 lb Farmer got +5 on random progression in the offseason so he figures to be a key cog in the defense going forward. Farmer paced the team in tackles with seven, including one for loss and a pass breakup. Most importantly, he was given a dark visor by this author in the edit player screen and sounds like James Earl Jones when he speaks: yea, Darth Farmer. The middle linebacker situation certainly didn't hurt Wyoming any against Wofford--the Terriers gained a laughable 25 yards on 26 rushing attempts.

Wyoming's defense knocked Wofford's starting quarterback out with a concussion in the 2nd quarter and picked the backup off three times. Linebacker/safety-hybrid Chavez Pownell Jr. brought an interception he found back 59 yards to the house while cornerbacks John Okwoli and Anthony Makransky contributed their own interceptions. SDE Carl Granderson contributed three sacks. Aside from a good opening TD drive and three random long passes of 59, 46, and 42 yards, Wofford did absolutely nothing on offense. And that was fine by Coach Bohl.

Halfback Nico Evans carries 20 times and continued his season-long string of 100+ yard performances with 135 more yards against Wofford. Evans broke a 40-yarder late in the game to set a new season long for him. As overwhelmed as Wofford was, they were one of the more aggressive run defenses the Cowboys have played. They weren't content to sit back in a six-man box and get gashed up and down the field by Wyoming's zone rushing attack. As a result, Wyoming didn't run the ball 50 times, but still managed to get back over the 200-yard rushing mark as a team.

In wondering why there were no studio updates during this game, a glance at the schedule revealed that some genius scheduled this game for a Sunday. Lol.

Since there were no studio updates during this game played on Sunday, there's some space for Crootin'. Wyoming received three additional commitments during Wofford week to push the size of their 2019 class to five players. All three fresh commits attended the 35-34 win over UNLV. This crop of recruits also pretty much fills Wyoming's needs in the secondary this cycle.

Wyoming snatched up 2* (#138 CB) Chris Henderson from neighboring Colorado. Henderson had been lightly recruited, but perhaps that was due to his stated desire to be an engineering major. Indeed, two of the better academic programs in FBS (Rice and Tulane) had some interest. Henderson gives Wyoming an athletic, intelligent six-footer to play corner. He's not the fastest defensive back out there, but he's likely to contribute sooner rather than later.

Clearly Wyoming was in a defensive back mindset as this crop of commits all figure to play in the secondary. Terrance Freeman is a 2* (#152 CB) defensive back from Colorado and basically a clone of the above Chris Henderson. If you squint, they look like brothers. Both gemmed up 4 points after scouting. Spooky. Freeman is 6'1"--ideal size at corner. Freeman also had an offer from Air Force. Otherwise his outlook is the same as Henderson's.

Wyoming also closed the deal on 3* follicly-challenged safety (#11 SS) Carey Harvey despite him talking some recent smack about the coaching staff. Harvey tweeted out an apology after realizing how important it was to get 250 passing yards in that UNLV game.

The 5'11" specimen from Twin Falls, ID has a reputation for laying the wood (73 STR, 77 HPOW) although he won't win too many foot races (77 SPD 73 AGI 79 ACC). However, Coach Bohl is excited that his speed gemmed up a bit (was D-rated before scouting) despite his overall dossier gemming down by three points (63 OVR). Harvey's future could be as a run supporting safety or he could be beefed up significantly and factor in at linebacker.

And take that, Vandals! Payback is a b*tch.
