It stinks that your line regressed, as your running game really hit top speed last year so hopefully you don't see the opposite trend this year. However, a big plus is that your secondary seems to have a really solid core this year, and gone are the days of you starting like a 64-OVR safety, so that should *hopefully* shore up your pass defense finally!
Thanks man. I find that the more detail I get into, the better I get to know my team and ultimately the more interested I am in playing the dynasty out. One of the main drivers is always getting a ton of seasons played and then looking back at certain things and making comparisons.

If the secondary stays healthy, they should be a big improvement on last year's version. Last year's pass defense was 2nd worst in this dynasty.

Wyoming QB Darrin Green (#6) muscles his way into the end zone for one of his two rushing TDs

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Utter domination on a rainy day at War Memorial Stadium. Wyoming got its revenge on Tulsa for a 48-45 overtime loss in the 2019 season-opener and then some.

The Golden Hurricane actually came into the game as the lesser of the two teams (77 OVR vs 79 OVR), but the degree to which they were obliterated was a surprise. Wyoming's defense stymied Tulsa for a dynasty-low 94 yards of total offense on just 36 total plays from scrimmage. The Golden Hurricane rushed 19 times for just 30 yards (1.6 YPC) and passed for an unfathomably low 64 yards (6.4 yards per completion). Tulsa fumbled the ball away twice thanks to scrambling QB Marcus Higdon (rSR), who was also sacked six times and fumbled thrice. He was a mess. Tulsa was just 2/9 on 3rd downs and did not enter the Wyoming red zone. Their only score was a 41-yard field goal in the middle of the 3rd quarter.

Stars on defense were many for the Pokes, but SDE Delbert Ryan (rSR) particularly distinguished himself with three sacks and a forced fumble. The run stopper from Woodward, OK was a backup DT last season, but the 6'5" 316-pounder was pushed out to SDE in Wyoming's 3-4 scheme by necessity after both of last year's starting DE's graduated. He appears to be taking to the move.

The defense as a whole seems to be much improved from last year. With two full games in the books, Wyoming has allowed seven field goals and nary a touchdown.

On offense, the Cowboys got on the board early in the 2nd quarter with a Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) nine-yard power run out of the I-Form Heavy formation. Mack would reprise his end zone appearance with a one-yard dive and Joe Bennett (JR) would close out a 17-point 2nd quarter with a 35-yard field goal.

Tulsa didn't really respond to any of that, so Wyoming just kept scoring. QB Darrin Green (rJR) connected with WR Todd Bennett (rSO) on a 16-yard post-corner route TD, then decided to grab a TD himself with a six-yard scramble. And again with a two-yard read-option keeper. Finally, Wyoming lined up for an "eff you" field goal as time expired to make it a 41-3 vengeance game.

The usual suspects on offense had characteristic games. Green was pretty good: 20/29 (68%) with 162 yards passing and a TD, twelve carries for 62 yards (5.1 YPC, sacks not removed) and a pair of rushing TDs. Mack was dialed up for an even 30 carries and 167 rushing yards (5.6 YPC) and two TDs. Mack also caught a team-high seven passes for 44 yards. Berserker LG Rocky Keefe (rJR) piled up another four pancakes, versus one sack, to give him eleven pancakes through just two games. You are an animal, bro.

Wyoming QB Darrin Green (#6) steps through a tackle attempt by junior DE Kyle Cox (#94) on his way to the house

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- A game that was trending toward a blowout at halftime ended up being a highly competitive affair. And a war of attrition for the Wyoming Cowboys.

It really was a game of two halves. In the first half, Wyoming looked very strong, nay dominant, in building a 24-0 lead at Memorial Stadium. Kicker Joe Bennett (JR) converted a 25-yard field goal with 6:21 to play in the 1st quarter. Then, the 2nd quarter was a touchdown barrage for the Pokes. Backup tailback Steven Foster (rSO) ran it in from the one-yard-line; QB Darrin Green (rJR) slung it to TE Tristan Hardin (rSO) for a 14-yard TD; then Green took it in himself for a four-yard TD scamper nine seconds before halftime.

It was a tremendously lopsided contest at halftime. Wyoming held the ball for 14:58 to Illinois' 5:02. Wyoming gained 239 yards of offense to Illinois' 49. And, of course, the score was 24-0 as mentioned previously.

The only problem with how the game was progressing, from the vantage point of Coach Bohl, was that his key players were dropping like flies. Stud strong safety and 2021 Thorpe awardee Tory McCollum (rSR) was knocked out for 5+ weeks with a "torn shoulder" on U of I's first offensive series. Starting MLB Mario Roberson (rFR) left for the game not long after with elbow bursitis. HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) would exit with a mild concussion in the 3rd quarter as Illinois started to show a pulse. Even the indomitable starting QB Darrin Green (rJR) would watch from the trainer's tent for a series with back spasms in the 4th quarter as Wyoming furiously tried to run out the clock in a one-possession game. Naturally, Terry Brooks (rSR) came in and threw two horrible passes including one that was nearly picked off to kill a WYO drive and cede a last gasp attempt to the Illini.

So how did the Illini make a game of it? Other than playing the Wyoming "B Team" due to all of the injuries?

For one, lefty QB Brett Cowan (rJR) started to play better as the game went on. The 6'2" 79-OVR product from Saline, MI badly overthrew his first three passes of the game, but he managed to puke-and-rally himself into a respectable line: 20/30 (66%) with 180 yards passing and one TD (128.0 QB rating). His favorite target was De Kalb-native TE Eddie Walker (rSO). The 6'5" 258-pounder caught eight (one drop) of Cowan's 20 completions for 75 yards and a 14-yard 3rd quarter TD. Why couldn't you have gone to NIU instead, bro? As this author's notes read: "WYO refused to cover the tight end." The aforementioned 14-yard TD pass from Cowan to Walker was actually the first touchdown allowed this season by Wyoming. It took 101 minutes and 43 seconds of hottt and steamy game action for the cpu to finally break through.

Cowan also ran nine times for 50 yards (5.5 YPC), including a read-option two-yard TD run with 8:42 left to play. That run made it a 24-18 game which would ultimately be the final score. But, it was an especially infuriating play for WYO defensive coordinator Caleb Jackson to endure. First of all, he really wanted to wear a nice suit and Coach Bohl wouldn't let him, so he was already pissed off to begin with. On top of that, Cowan appeared to "ghost" right up the middle through immense traffic due to some mangled physics. On 4th down and goal no less. Incredibly aggravating for a team that was coasting at halftime only to find themselves in an unexpected dog fight with a handful of star players back in the locker room nursing injuries. And, all while their fashion-conscious defensive coordinator was pouting and sporting a sweater-vest, which might as well have been a clown suit as far as he was concerned.

For two, the Wyoming offense effectively turtled in the 2nd half. Everything that was working in the 1st half wasn't working any longer. It was almost like a switch was flipped with Mack got knocked out with a concussion. The Pokes leaned more heavily on the pass game for a bit and that backfired badly; RT Luther Paul (rJR) got his lunch eaten by linebacker-sized Illini LDE Kyle Cox (rJR). Cox beat Paul for three sacks. Cox's teammate and Illini LOLB Dave Webb (rJR) also got in there for two sacks of his own as the Wyoming right side was repeatedly savaged like General Custer at the Little Bighorn.

The Wyoming QB would play an overall good game despite the 2nd half Illini pressure. Green completed 14/23 (60%) for 164 yards and a TD against no interceptions. Green rushed eleven times for just eight yards (0.8 YPC) which isn't a bad total given that half of those "rushes" were really Illinois sacks.

So the sky was falling? Wyoming players were getting knocked out left and right? Illinois came to life on both sides of the ball? The Wyoming defensive coordinator was not allowed to wear his Sunday finery? How did Wyoming weather the storm?

I am glad you asked. Yes, it's true. The coordinator was not allowed to wear his suit. But that's neither here nor there.

In the football game at hand, a few fateful things transpired to salt the game away for Wyoming. For one, with the Illini on the move late, CB Quincy Perryman (SR) swatted a pass down on 4th-and-7 with 3:17 to play. After Wyoming was still unable to run out the clock from there, mighty SDE Delbert Ryan (rSR) punished the Illini QB on a scramble and separated ball from QB. His defensive line-mate WDE Johnie Randall (rSO) pounced on the rock with 1:36 left and the Pokes killed the clock from there. In killing the clock, backup HB Steven Foster (rSO), a 5'10" 215-lb power back from Del City, OK, became progressively more ornery and hard to take down. While Foster wasn't credited with any broken tackles, he ran tough when the Pokes really needed it. Foster finished with 22 carries for 96 yards (4.3 YPC) and a long rush of 34 yards. And, for what it's worth Foster doesn't really see the problem with his team's defensive coordinator wearing a suit on the sideline if he wants to. I mean who's he really hurting by wearing a suit?

Great redemption performance against Tulsa WTNY. Always bring a smile to my face when I am able to pay back a loss to the team that delivered a loss to me.

Illinois though?!?!? Ouch!!! That medical staff was busy that game. I would’ve been like when does this end. just get me out of here. Nice performance from the “B” team. Nice to see them step it up when you needed it the most. Interested and n seeing how the Aztecs game goes for you guys. Looking at the screen shots you provided, your offense antheir defense looks like a good match up.

                  Good luck man.

2022g4: San Diego State @ Wyoming

Wyoming DT Milo McNeil (#98) knows it's time to be fed

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Mountain West Conference play opened up with a 23-10 Wyoming victory. The Pokes are playing some defense so far through their first four games. In fact, Wyoming has only allowed 49 points so far this season. To put this in context, they allowed 66 points to Hawai'i last season.

And so with All-American SS Tory McCollum (rSR) watching from his street clothes on the sidelines, the Wyoming defense showed up early when FS Noah Myers (rFR) undercut an out route for an interception on SDSU's opening drive. Wyoming could only manage a field goal, but it was a good sign for a secondary playing without its emotional, spiritual, academic, financial, and political leader.

The Aztecs rebounded from their disastrous opening sequence to score the first touchdown of the game on an eight-yard rush by HB Matt Bennett (rSR). Aztec backs tend to be used heavily, but this speed back out of Berkley, MI actually didn't play an outsized role in this game. He only toted seven times for 41 yards (5.8 YPC) and caught one pass for two yards. Oh, and he returned kicks (one return for 26 yards) and punts (two returns for 19 yards). So, that's 88 all purpose yards. I'm listening. Bennett has sort of odd dimensions for a running back at 6'4" 203 lbs. Coach Bohl felt a compulsion to recruit him just to convert him to WR.

San Diego State preferred to keep the ball in QB Jeffrey Nance's (rJR) hands. And that was quite all right with Coach Bohl. Nance, a 79-OVR signal caller from Gilroy, CA, completed 18/31 passes (58%) for 168 yards and two INTs (90.6 QB rating). Nance didn't throw downfield often, wasn't particularly accurate when he did, and was also sacked four times. Shout out from DT Milo McNeil (2 sacks), OLB Roderick Sharp (1 sack), and CB Tommy Wong (1 sack). Unfortunately, Sharp would leave the game in the 4th quarter with a mild concussion.

Nance's long pass was only 28 yards, but he did have a big 49-yard run. He rushed nine times for 56 yards (6.2 YPC) so it would appear that it was that one long run and nothing else, but Nance actually had a second 20+ yard carry. It's just those sacks weighed heavily on his stat line.

Wyoming began to assert itself on offense in the 2nd quarter. The Pokes would score a pair of TDs to take a 17-7 lead into the half. On the first of those TDs, Wyoming broke off an epic 19-play drive to gain 69 yards while consuming 7:37 of game clock. The Pokes put it in on 4th-and-goal from the 3-yard-line on QB Darrin Green's (rJR) scramble. Green would add a 15-yard passing TD to speedy WR Bryce Merchant (SR) with :24 left in the half.

Halftime was no antidote for the Aztecs. They got the ball, drove down the field, and their QB fired his 2nd INT of the game to CB Quincy Perryman (SR), who returned it 29 yards out of his own end zone. The teams would simply trade field goals for the rest of the game, with Wyoming getting two to SDSU's one. That's a good deal.

Notably as this thing wound down in the 3rd quarter, Wyoming attempted to convert on 4th-and-1 from SDSU's 25-yard-line only for Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) to get past the line to gain, then doink off of a defensive player in an instance of awful game physics, and then fly right into the waiting arms of another SDSU defender about three yards behind the line of scrimmage. So, yeah, apparently forward progress is not a thing and despite an irate challenge from Coach Bohl, the ruling was upheld by an idiotic Mountain West officiating crew.

Another notable situation occurred on San Diego State's final drive. Trailing 23-10 with about a minute to play, an apparent Aztec TD was called back due to offensive holding. The Wyoming defense capitalized on that by forcing a turnover on downs with 51 seconds left.

For Wyoming, Green shook off a pair of interceptions to lead his team to the win. He completed 25/32 (78%) for 214 yards with a TD and two INTs (132.1 QB rating). He also rushed eleven times for 53 yards (4.8 YPC) and a TD (sacks not removed). Mack ran the rock 23 times for 89 yards (3.8 YPC) and caught his usual team-leading seven passes for 37 yards. LG Rocky Keefe (rJR) keeps pile driving fools with another four-pancake game.

The Wyoming defense allowed just ten points and 264 yards of offense. They racked up four sacks, two picks, and held SDSU to 2/12 (16%) on 3rd down, ten first downs, and just 9:15 of possession time.

Yeah, injuries seem to be the main thing this season. At least only one of them is medium-long term. Although it said my SS McCollum would be out 5 weeks, usually they'll spend a few more weeks as doubtful before randomly being allowed back in. I've seen players out 5-6 weeks who miss the entire season. Kinda weird, but on some level I do like the randomness--when someone gets hurt, you can't necessarily predict to the exact day when they'll be healthy again.

My offense didn't do as well against their defense as the numbers would've predicted, but this Wyoming team seems to be a different type of team (more defensive and less explosive on offense) than we're used to seeing.

                          2022g5: #15 Wyoming @ New Mexico

Wyoming QB Darrin Green (#6) surveys the field in one of his better performances to date

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A tremendously sloppy performance at home in the rain by the Lobos did them in against #15-ranked Wyoming. The Pokes came in well-rested after consecutive bye weeks. They also saw their stock rise dramatically in the polls due to all of the carnage and attrition around them as an idle team. Coming into this matchup at 4-0 (1-0) with no signature wins is apparently good enough for the #15 rank in the nation. Coach Bohl is not gonna argue that logic. In any case, the Pokes mostly played like a ranked squad.

Wyoming was literally off to the races as they intercepted the opposition's opening drive for the 2nd game in a row. This time it was injury-sub SS Zackary Gaither (SR) who recorded a 102-yard pick-six to get things rolling. It's worth mentioning that Gaither was a weak link in a very porous secondary last season and is only getting run due to All-American SS Tory McCollum's (rSR) shoulder injury. Yes, a regular Johnny-on-the-spot. Both teams were without their star defensive player, though, as the Lobos' 94-OVR LB Steve White (SR) deals with a broken collarbone.

Following the early pick-six, Coach Bohl's team wasn't nearly done making life difficult on the Lobos. New Mexico QB Brian DeLuca (rSR) had one of those best-of-times-worst-of-times performances, mixing explosive plays with boneheaded ones. DeLuca, not to be confused with Hollywood director Brian De Palma, turned the ball over four times. The 6'6" pocket passer from Kingfisher, OK ended up with a line of 25/32 (78%) for 245 yards with one TD against four picks (127.7 QB rating). So, he completed 25 passes to his own team, four to Wyoming, and only three went as true incompletions. DeLuca also carried three times for 63 yards (21.0 YPC) with a 45-yard TD run being the main reason. The New Mexico running backs totaled just 61 yards on 15 carries (4.1 YPC) as DeLuca hogged the rock like QB's tend to do in this game. DeLuca did not, however, direct movies like Carrie, Scarface, and Mission: Impossible. Again, that was Brian De Palma. The Lobos also struggled with penalties. Seven penalties for 61 yards is pretty severe for a game that is very conservative with doling out infractions.

On the other hand, Wyoming played a largely clean and efficient game. Zero turnovers and just a single penalty for ten yards. The Wyoming defense did have some trouble tackling and bending against New Mexico. Even though they suffered four turnovers, New Mexico went up and down the field pretty easily for 369 yards of total offense. In particular, New Mexico did a good job getting YAC on completions. Of the 245 passing yards given up by WYO, 144 yards (59%) of that was after the catch. The Pokes also failed to get to the quarterback for the first time in a while, which wasn't all that surprising given the strength of UNM's offensive line led by 97-OVR RG Craig Capps (rSR).

For their part on offense, Wyoming mostly did what it pleased. The Pokes possessed the pigskin for 15:13 in the first half (ten minute quarters) and 14:30 in the second half due to all of UNM's turnovers. Wyoming also sustained drives very efficiently (10/16 on 3rd down) and took a more balanced approach than in seasons-past. Of 419 yards of total offense, Wyoming passed for 225 and rushed for 194 on 45 carries (4.3 YPC). QB Darrin Green (rJR) had one of his better days in the brown, white and gold. The dual-threat maven from Sunset, UT was responsible for 309 total yards (74% of the team's total). Passing-wise, he was 21/34 (61%, seven drops) for 225 yards and a pair of TDs; rushing-wise, Green carried twelve times for 84 yards (7.0 YPC) and another TD. He was not sacked or even breathed on all that much. HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) and WR Bryce Merchant (SR) were the recipients of Green's TD passes. Altogether, Mack contributed 71 rushing yards on 23 carries (3.0 YPC) and 38 receiving yards on five catches (7.6 YPC). Merchant caught five balls for 62 yards; WR J.C. McCrary (rJR) caught five passes for 69 yards.

Again, on defense things were a bit of a mixed bag for the Pokes. They ceded their 2nd-worst total yardage number of the season so far (Northern Colorado gained 373 yards in week 1), missed some tackles, and suffered some injuries. True freshman DT Josh Watson left the game in the 1st quarter with a mild concussion. MLB Mario Roberson (rFR), who missed part of an earlier game with his own concussion, was knocked out of the present game with broken ribs. Roberson is expected to miss at least four weeks of action, which hurts an already-thin and inexperienced linebacking corps.

Despite any warts and inconveniences, forcing four turnovers and allowing just 17 points (especially while scoring 41) on the road in a conference game is actually good. CB Justin Bryant (rSR) picked off two passes and CB Quincy Perryman (SR) got one of his own. Wyoming gave up just a New Mexico field goal in the entire 2nd half. Not bad at all.

In a bit of controversy Coach Bohl elected to stuff it in the end zone with the score already 34-17 and just ten seconds remaining. Why send this "unsportsmanlike" message you ask? The Coach didn't like how the Lobos had face-masked his QB the previous play. So instead of sitting on the ball, Coach Bohl thought the Lobos needed to be taught some manners. Aight?

That SDSU game was closer then I expected. Looking at the numbers your defense is clean. Lobos game I would agree was just poor excution. CSU to me might be intriguing. Looking forward to seeing what happens and how your defense shows up against them. Gonna guess defense has to be ranked somewhere in the top 15 in the country?

Wyoming WR Bryce Merchant (#85) leisurely strolls down the sideline with nary a defender in sight

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The BORDER WAR. Wyoming's most bitter rivalry continues to tilt in their favor. This 48-27 triumph makes it five-in-a-row for WYO over CSU. However, the three-touchdown margin wasn't really indicative of how competitive this game was throughout most of the game.

The hated Rams wasted no time in activating the "Big Game Skill" and they penetrated the Wyoming end zone early when a 40-yard read-option keeper by QB Lamar Carey (JR) went to the hizzle for shizzle. Half of Wyoming's defense took out the CSU halfback and CB Quincy Perryman (SR) was ineffective at tackling as the last man between Carey and the hizzle. This is a recurring problem for my dude. Some say they're a "lover" not a "fighter"? Well, Perryman is a "coverer" and not a "tackler." Anyhow, 7-0 hated Rams.

On Wyoming's first drive, not only did they not score in response, but starting HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) was knocked out for at least three weeks with a strained back. Mack was sold out by his QB on a pass over the middle that led him into a punishing hit. After a WYO punt, the hated Rams drove back into Wyoming territory and literally banged a 48-yard FG in off the crossbar. 10-0 hated Rams and things seem to be deteriorating in front of the home crowd.

However, Wyoming's offense decided to show up in the 2nd quarter. As the start of a huge passing day, QB Darrin Green (rJR) hooked up with TE Tristan Hardin (rFR) for an eleven-yard TD pass. Notice how Hardin is being mentioned mostly in situations other than dropped passes this season? Yeah, me too. 10-7 hated Rams in the lead.

The hated Rams would swiftly respond with another TD, this time an eleven-yard triple option pitch from Carey to HB Kevin Stone (SR). Stone showed out for the hated Rams: 19 carries for 163 yards (8.5 YPC) and a long rush of 45 yards. A yeoman's effort considering no HB had topped 75 rushing yards against Wyoming all season. 17-7 hated Rams.

The pendulum would swing back again, when Wyoming's Green connected with WR Bryce Merchant (SR) on a 70-yard TD pass. It was Merchant's best collegiate game--he also hauled in a 62-yard pass on the previous drive which set up Wyoming's first TD. Merchant would end up with just three catches for 156 yards. Green would play a nice little game of his own: 19/33 (57%) 364 yards with four TDs and zero interceptions (190.2 QB rating). Not too shabby for the Mountain West Conference player of the week. Green also rushed eleven times for 68 yards (6.2 YPC) with sacks removed. 17-14 hated Rams.

The teams would continue to trade body blows and head to the locker room at halftime with Wyoming trailing 20-17.

Things didn't seem to be going much better for the Pokes in the 3rd quarter. Their opening drive bogged down and ended in a game-tying 43-yard field goal only to watch CSU drive the other way in 1:50 of game time for yet another QB option TD run. The Colorado State QB accounted for 318 yards of total offense. To pour salt in the wound, on that same drive Wyoming lost reserve SS Jesse Taylor (rJR) to a mild concussion. It's a M.A.S.H. unit in here.

So here we are with 2:57 left in the third quarter and the hated Rams are up 27-20 on the heretofore unbeaten, #8-ranked Pokes. What next?

Well, as it turns out the final 13 minutes of game time would be an absolute rout for the Pokes. A 28-0 run. Green to WR Cedric Weaver (rSO) for the easiest 17-yard pitch-and-catch ever. Backup HB Steven Foster (rSO) two-yard TD run. Green-to-Weaver reprise their connection once again for 20 yards. Then a one-yard plunge for the fullback Tyrone Ford (JR). The hated Rams had no answers.

And WYO cornerback Justin Bryant (rSR) ended any hopes of a CSU comeback by picking them off on their final two drives. So that's four picks for Bryant over the previous two games. Damn, son. Wyoming LB Forest Steadman (rJR) and DT Milo McNeil (rSR) both chipped in three tfls in slowing the CSU rushing attack; FS Noah Myers (rFR) notched his first collegiate sack and broke up a pass to go with five tackles. He also did a nice job not getting hurt, which is not something this author can say about all of his safeties...ahem...

And LG Rocky Keefe (rJR) the beefcake Keefecake with another four-pancake effort. Wyoming recorded twelve pancakes against CSU's zero pancakes. So, despite the total yardage being close, the hated Rams were really dominated in the trenches. And that's what Coach Bohl really likes to see: physical domination of the opponent.
