Re: Wyoming | The Reboot (NCAA 14)
I would say there are no plans to change conferences at this point. I am still getting tough games from teams like Hawai'i, Idaho, and Boise State. Those games have all been compelling over the previous few years. Even BYU and Utah State, who I usually dominate, were nailbiters that could've gone either way this past season. I feel like I would really need to wreck my conference for a few years in a row before Wyoming could realistically get invited to the PAC-12 or BIG 12 etc. In fact, Coach Bohl leaving Wyoming for another school might even be more likely than Wyoming switching conferences at some point.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

2022 Season Wrap Part 3: WYO
If yet another 12-win season means the Pokes are getting old and stale, then sign Coach Bohl up. He is content to coach an old and stale football team. He doesn't mind if those big city rags like the Casper Star-Tribune, the Jackson Hole Daily, or the Laramie Daily Boomerang have become a little numb to this. No sir'ee, Bob. The Coach is just going to continue building this here program up and see where this thing goes.
Anyhow, another 12-win season means the Cowboys are on a 5-year run of 55-14 (~11-3 per season on average). Wyoming has made bowls in all of those years and has won all but 1 of 'em. So what if the Riverton Ranger is savaging Coach Bohl in their sports page for not beating Hawai'i the MWC title game? OK? So what if The Sheridan Press thinks Wyoming should try to lure Nick Saban out of retirement? So what? OK? So what? Wyoming Football is in the midst of a glorious epoch that hasn't been seen since the time of Jim Kiick and Mike Dirks over 50 years ago. OK? So if the Wyoming beat writer from The Rawlins Daily Times yawns and thumbs his nose at Wyoming's next conference win, he can go straight to hell is all I'm saying.
In 2022, the Pokes ended up starting fast--going 7-0 before a brutal 1-point loss in Boise as time expired. In that stretch, there were one-possession victories over Northern Colorado, Illinois, and rival Utah State. Mixed in with those close games was a Ram-shooting vs archenemy Colorado State, a Lobo-tastic blowout of New Mexico, a 41-3 Golden Hurricane of vengeance against Tulsa, and a somewhat milquetoast 23-10 victory over San Diego State.
After going to spud in the loss to Boise State, the Pokes grounded Air Force before erupting against rival Hawai'i in recapturing the Paniolo Trophy. Coach Bohl's team got thin, last second wins against Idaho in the Potato Dome and at BYU before thudding back to Earth against Hawai'i in the conference title game. Wyoming did rebound once again and edged #3-ranked Clemson to win their biggest bowl game in Coach Bohl's tenure--the Orange Bowl. Oh, not good enough for you Mr. Columnist from the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle? I bet living in such a big city like Cheyenne has jaded you to the point where nothing's ever good enough, eh?
Incumbent starter Terry Brooks (rSR) spent most of his senior year holding the clipboard aside from a couple of isolated spots here and there. It was quite nice to have a 94-OVR insurance policy at QB and Wyoming has probably never been quite so well-endowed at this position before.
As for the starter, Darrin Green (rJR) started to realize this author's wildest fantasies for his career going way back to recruiting him as just some 3* from Utah named "Ross Johnson." I mean a black guy born and raised in Utah is already notable, but when he runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, throws the ball with zip, and has arms the size of tree trunks, then it's stuff of legend. Word is he went across the state line to Colorado and solved the cold case of JonBenet Ramsey during one of Wyoming's bye weeks. It's just a rumor, but would you really doubt him?
As for stats, Green played admirably in 2022. He threw for over 3,000 yards and, as you'll see just below, ran for nearly 1,200 yards (without removing sacks). Yes, he led the team in both passing and rushing yardage. That's 4,343 total yards on 415 pass attempts and 196 rushing attempts. He did leave games for a series here or a play there, but with Brooks only attempting 26 passes, it's pretty clear that Green was a durable force of nature. And Green's junior year (this year) was much better than Brooks' junior year (last year) in terms or yardage, TDs, completion percentage, yards per pass, and overall QBR. Coach Bohl feels vindicated in starting Green as a result.
Next season, Brooks will be gone, but Green will be a Heisman front runner from the get-go. And he will be backed up by Frankie Sanchez (rSO) who is yet another nifty dual threat type. Then there are a couple of dudes that may never see the field behind Sanchez. I mean when Sanchez does defenses dirty...you can imagine he'll be a fan favorite. This position is all set for next season.
Everyone in college football knows that Wyoming likes to run the ball. A lot. That was no different this year as the Pokes ran 60% of the time (668 carries out of 1,110 offensive plays). The team did miss Weldon Adler, however, and Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) dealt with nagging injuries. Mack didn't take the step forward that Coach Bohl had hoped--he fell from an outstanding 6.2 YPC in 2021 to just 4.3 YPC this past season. He didn't even go over 1,000 yards until the bowl game against Clemson. Is new offensive coordinator Chris Creighton and his Eastern Michigan playbook to blame? That jerk columnist at the Billings Gazette seems to think so. That's fine. The new playcaller in town is Scott Frost and Coach Bohl is very happy having another Husker alum on the staff.
All of the running backs of note will return next season.
The passing game was fundamentally different compared to last year. Last season, the top 2 pass catchers were both running backs. This time 3 of the top 4 are wide receivers. The passing game wasn't quite as voluminous as during the Chandler Garrett years, but Green and Co. accounted for the most efficient passing attack, as 7.7 yards-per-attempt is a new dynasty best.
Both Todd Bennett (rSO) and Bryce Merchant (SR) were bonafide deep threats. Bennett due to his 6'6" frame and Merchant due to his blazing speed. Bennett led the team with 57 catches and 717 receiving yards, but oddly just 1 TD. Weird for a guy you'd think would be an amazing red zone target. Merchant rebounded nicely from a disappointing junior year. Whereas he posted 11.9 yards-per-catch last year, this season he was way up at 19.0. He blew by coverages on deep routes and Green wasn't afraid to stand in and deliver. Or roll out and deliver. Green's mobility was a key in buying time to connect on more deep routes.
Although Merchant will be gone, Bennett's classmate Cedric Weaver (rSO) will assume the flanker role next year. Weaver saw plenty of action this past season with 36 catches for 493 yards and 5 TDs. Weaver is also nearly as fast as Merchant, but also happens to be 6'4". The Pokes are set up pretty nicely with Bennett and Weaver for a couple of more years as well as Russell Thomas (FR) who redshirted this year, but hit the random progression jackpot and will be something like an 80 OVR before he ever plays a collegiate down.
Tight end Tristan Hardin (rSO) wasn't featured a whole lot in this offense as a pass catcher. Gone are the days of Alec Stewart putting up 70 catch 1200 yard 15 TD seasons. However, Hardin caught about the same number of passes this year as last, but with 10 fewer drops in the mix. Hardin was also a dynamo as a blocker, with a very angry 36 pancakes against zero sacks allowed.
And Coach Bohl thought 72 pancakes was a lot? Holy moly and aye carumba. This year's Wyoming Cowboy offensive line had a PhD in putting defenses on their asses. Left guard Rocky Keefe (rJR) was all about that Bisquick, boss--his 38 pancakes are by far the most recorded by a Wyoming offensive lineman. I remember back when he was named "Patrick Novak" and was just a glimmer in Coach Bohl's eye on the recruiting trail. There's not a whole lot of things that can make Coach Bohl break down and cry, but seeing 134 pancakes on the board (nearly 10 per game) makes him break down like a little baby. Tears of joy.
And this group returns the 4 best starters (center and Nevada transfer Akim Bell pretty much sucked) for next season...
Interesting that the offensive line was much better at pancaking fools this year even though the USER adjustment for blocking was religiously left at "normal" and never adjusted.
Last year Wyoming lost Cedric Farmer to the 1st round of the NFL draft and this year without him they were....much better. Huh? Goes to show how much of a team game this is, especially on defense.
Wyoming played respectable defense for the most part. They allowed 25.7 PPG, which was about a 4.5 PPG improvement over last year. On a yardage basis, Wyoming allowed 391.2 YPG, which was only the 2nd time in the Bohl era that a sub-400 has been accomplished. There were still some pinball machine games with the 60-57 win over Idaho and the 69-47 win over Hawai'i, but it wasn't bad. Heck, Wyoming's defense didn't even give up 30 points in a single game until week 12 in that crazy Paniolo Trophy game with the latest Hawai'ian-made robo QB Terry Washington.
The Wyoming secondary especially was a lot better. The pass defense went from allowing 295 YPG in 2021 to 251 YPG in 2022. And that was despite losing All-American SS Tory McCollum (rSR) for what basically amounted to the entire season. The Pokes will have 3 new starters after losing McCollum, CB Justin Bryant (rSR), and CB Qunicy Perryman (SR) all to graduation. Free safety Noah Myers (rFR) will return with some All-American buzz after a standout freshman season.
4-year starter DT Milo McNeil (rSR) had a phenomenal senior season with 20 tackles for loss. This is a guy listed at 350 and he's being USER'd, getting into the backfield, and causing chaos. Wunderkind Josh Watson (FR) figures to be next in the line of USER succession, but there's actually some sad news to come on that front regarding the Louisiana native.
Kicker Joe Bennett (JR) won the Groza award. Lots of extra points, perfect on field goal attempts, and touchbacks by the truck load. Sometimes USER controlled teams get too many award winners, but this was pretty well deserved.
Although the Wyoming return game did not return anything for a TD this year, Ricardo Austin (rSR) was awarded basically a lifetime achievement award by winning Best Returner. He did provide some explosiveness and was in the usual 25-26 yard-per-return range. But, basically the voters just felt bad that he was constantly being position changed between slot WR/CB/FS from one year to the next.

No, unfortunately Coach Bohl's schtick is that he can't get no respect. He has that mindset and tries to interact with the vicious big city media as little as possible.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

I've said this before and I'll say it again. This continues to be my favorite 'chise on here. It's been awhile since I checked in, but I'm glad I did. Love reading this thing. 2023 MASSIVE Season Preview
Wyoming says goodbye to 12 seniors, graduated and gone after the 2022 season. Of these 12 graduates, 9 were considered starters last season. The rest of them, such as QB Terry Brooks, had been a starter at some point in the past. Brooks was a 6th round NFL draft pick.
On defense, Wyoming loses 6 defensive starters, including 3/4 of the starting secondary. All-American SS Tory McCollum's illustrious career ended with a whimper as he nursed an injury for most of his senior year. McCollum was drafted in the 5th round. Justin Bryant, a 6th rounder, and Quincy Perryman will need to be replaced by a new set of starting CBs. Zackary Gaither, a starter two years ago at FS, also moves on.
Up front, 2/3 of the starting 3-4 defensive front moves on. 4-year starting NT Milo McNeil and SDE Delbert Ryan are gone. Unfortunately DT Josh Watson, a big time recruit from the last cycle and next in line for USER'ing, also leaves via transfer. The 80-OVR Watson who played a decent amount as a true freshman this past year, leaves Wyoming for LSU seeking "playing time." Odds are the Louisiana native just wanted to be closer to home because he would've got all the playing time he could handle at Wyoming. Or maybe he wanted to be a skrimp-boat captain? The Pokes also lose outside 'backer Roderick Sharp, a 3-year starter, who recorded 42 tfls and 10 sacks over his career.
On offense, the Pokes lose WR Bryce Merchant, C Akim Bell, and backup OT Rodney Graham. Merchant caught 114 passes for 1,479 yards and 17 TDs as a 3-year starter (he was recruited as a JUCO sophomore). But, these losses are very mild on offense.
Whereas all Cowboy alumni will live on in our hearts for all eternity, we turn the page with a new crop of WYO young men. Coach Bohl and his staff put together a class of 13 for Signing Day 2022. It was the 57th ranked class in the nation.
Coach Bohl snagged another 4* recruit, his 2nd of this dynasty. Yet another linebacker. Unfortunately Eric Morris gemmed down 5 points to 66 OVR upon scouting. Morris has prototypical size at 6'3" 252 lbs, but he'll take a year or two to season. To make Morris' recruitment quite satisfying, Wyoming's main rivals Utah State and Colorado State both offered scholarships.
Code:Eric Morris: 83 SPD | 74 STR | 77 ACC | 72 TAK | 76 BSH | 68 MCV | 54 ZCV
Among some of the more interesting specimens in this class are the secondary prospects. This year's team was laden with seniors, so fresh blood was needed in the secondary. To that end, Coach Bohl is very excited about his new recruits, particularly FS Emanuel Moody, CB Shaun Miller, and CB Malik Roach. Roach was regarded by scouting services as a high 3* and #15-ranked CB with an offer from Illinois. Moody and Miller both gemmed up nicely to 74- and 72-OVR respectively.
Code:Malik Roach: 90 SPD | 76 AGI | 82 ACC | 75 MCV | 81 ZCV | 70 PRS | 52 STR
Code:Emanuel Moody: 92 SPD | 90 AGI | 85 ACC | 72 MCV | 67 ZCV | 65 STR | 77 TAK
Code:Shaun Miller: 92 SPD | 89 AGI | 91 ACC | 81 MCV | 80 ZCV | 75 PRS | 45 STR
The graduations and transfers put a lot of pressure on the defensive line prospects in this class. Long term, Moses Lawson has the highest upside (#27 DE), but the Idaho native isn't likely to see the field in 2023. Lawson is 6'6" 302 pounds, but needs some time to get stronger. Despite having the lower upside, Justin Thompson will be thrust right into the rotation as a true freshman. Recruited as a DE, Coach Bohl sees the 6'1" 286-lb Thompson more as a DT.
Code:Moses Lawson: 65 SPD | 73 STR | 76 ACC | 77 TAK | 78 BSH | 77 PWM | 70 FMV
Code:Justin Thompson: 65 SPD | 78 STR | 56 ACC | 73 TAK | 77 BSH | 75 PWM | 74 FMV
The most interesting recruits not already mentioned are a 6'7" WR from North Carolina and a 6'6" 310-lb offensive tackle from Alabama. Kendall Brinson, the 69-OVR #101 WR recruit, will redshirt, but it will certainly be a delight for him to play alongside 6'6" Todd Bennett next season. Brinson had an interesting offer list that consisted of Wyoming, Arizona, and Akron. Lawrence Walker, the 68-OVR #19 OT recruit, gemmed down 4 points after scouting. But he had a scholarship offer from USC so he has some serious talent. Walker has bad intentions and quick feet, which is what Wyoming looks for in their offensive live.
Code:Kendall Brinson: 89 SPD | 81 AGI | 86 ACC | 72 CTH | 60 CIT | 66 RTE | 81 JMP
Code:Lawrence Walker: 54 SPD | 83 STR | 91 ACC | 70 PBK | 80 RBK | 76 IBK
The recruits also underwent a thorough "reconditioning" and renaming per WYO Football statutes (h/t to Bigsheen for suggesting some good websites). For each recruit, the website http://random-name-generator.info was used to generate 25 names to choose from and the name style was toggled between common, average, and rare.
To add a little bit of randomness to the development of players, a random progression system was put in place (h/t to Hellisan for the concept).
Each offseason 12 random numbers from 1-99 are generated using https://random.org and the numbers are matched to the jersey numbers of Wyoming players. The first 8 players chosen in this way undergo a regression between 1 and 10 points of OVR. The final 4 chosen undergo additional progression between 1 and 10 points of OVR. Another random number generation gives the magnitude of the OVR change. The individual attributes chosen to effect each change are at the discretion of this author--often there are several attributes impacted.
Poor Parker McNulty (rSO) and Trenton Jacobson (rJR). Both were targeted twice in the same cycle for regression. McNulty regressed 16 points and Jacobson dropped 11 OVR. Jacobson may have played a bit next year, but now he's probably a career bench player. McNulty is a 47 OVR now, so he's little more than a walk-on. However, these 2 players soaked up half of the regression bullets in this year's cycle. And all of the other players impacted were mostly spared from any large decreases.
The Pokes will field a team that is a composite 80.3 OVR (82.8 OFF/77.8 DEF). On paper, this team figures to have the best and most dynamic offense of the Bohl era. Defensively, this lineup is a shade (0.3 points) less than last year's unit. Both the DL and the DB take a step backward while the young LB's will attempt to compensate.
Every starter on offense is an upperclassman and 9 of them are returning starters from last season. Including QB Darrin Green (rSR) who returns a strong Heisman candidate and begins 2023 as a 1st team All-NCAA selection. Green will have HB Kelvin Mack Jr. back, an experienced offensive line, and a talented receiving corps. All systems are go for a huge season.
The Wyoming defense, as always, figures to be interesting. After losing both Milo McNeil (graduation) and Josh Watson (transfer), Alfonzo McDade (rSO) becomes the new USER man in the middle. McDade is one hefty fellow at 6'0" 381 lbs who, at 72 OVR, isn't expected to do much aside from taking up space. Like a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme is supposed to. But, he likely won't get any of the pass rush or tfls that McNeil was so good at. McDade will be flanked by returning starter Johnnie Randall (rJR) and new starter Thaddeus Isaacs (rFR). Randall flips over to the strong side so that Isaacs at 6'5" 268 lbs can man the weak side.
A very young linebacking corps will be led by 82-OVR Forest Steadman (rSR). Steadman is a preseason All-MWC honoree. Noah Myers (rSO), a preseason 1st team All-American, will try to hold together a secondary with 3 new starters. Although one of these newbies is Tommy Wong (rSR) who has not only seen a ton of game action already, but is a preseason All-MWC selection himself.
Now this is a schedule that will put Wyoming to the test. Immediately, one must consider the early season out-of-conference matchup at #2 Notre Dame. The Irish have been a factor in the title picture for several years in a row and that's not likely to change. Texas Tech is another game that could be pretty tough. The Technicians beat Wyoming 31-16 in Lubbock back in 2020. The usual suspects in Idaho, Boise State, and Hawai'i will all have to be dealt with anew.

2023g1: Portland State @ Wyoming
Does this man have a Heisman Trophy in his future?
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Aside from a late stat-padding flurry by the cpu, this 56-21 Wyoming victory is about what you'd expect against an FCS opponent. The 84-OVR Pokes were pitted against the 63-OVR Vikings, and when the scale starts a rocking (> 20-point advantage), don't come a knocking. Or some such.
Wyoming got out to an early lead and parlayed that into a commanding 28-7 halftime score. HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) recorded a 7-yard TD run to start the scoring--this play capped a 14-play 70-yard drive of all rushing plays. WR JC McCrary (rSR) caught a 6-yard TD pass. Mack and HB Jamaal Harlow (rFR) both added 1-yard TD runs in the 2nd quarter. Wyoming had 262 yards of total offense, zero turnovers, and zero incompletions at the break. Whereas, Portland State accrued 113 yards and a turnover with just 13 passing yards.
Portland State was stronger than expected on the ground. Specifically, HB Jeff Williams was a big play threat. His 53-yard rush set up Portland State's TD in the first half, then a 67-yard TD run got the Vikings a quick score coming out of halftime. Williams would rush for 136 yards before eventually being knocked out with an injury. As a unit, the Vikings rushed for 208 yards on only 21 attempts (9.9 YPC), which wouldn't even be a good day for WYO's rush defense if they were playing an FBS squad. Against an FCS foe, it's downright worrisome.
Portland State added a late TD using an impressive 13-play 71-yard drive with about two and a half minutes to play. Unfortunately for the visitors, each touchdown they manufactured was matched by a pair of Wyoming touchdowns. The Pokes added another four TDs in the 2nd half. Harlow's 12-yard run, FB Tyrone Ford (SR) had a 1-yard run, HB Steven Foster (rJR) had a 4-yard run, WR Todd Bennett (rJR) hauled in a 12-yard TD pass. The new Oregon (Spread) playbook seems to be working out alright so far for Wyoming.
QB Darrin Green (rSR) kicked off his Heisman campaign with a modest, but efficient effort. Green completed 13/15 passes (86%) for 171 yards and two TDs while rushing for 90 yards on eleven carries (8.2 YPC) after removing sacks. He was complemented nicely by his senior tailback, who carried the load: 29 carries for 138 yards (4.7 YPC) and two TDs. Mack also chipped in a 41-yard screen pass reception as part of his two catches for 60 yards. Nine different Wyoming players received a share of Wyoming's 60 rushes, with three different WRs and five RBs all getting at least one carry. LG Rocky Keefe (rSR) started off the season right with five pancakes; new starter at center Joshua Moore (rSR) had three pancakes. Moore was actually a starter at guard two years back and sat most of last season as a reserve.
And now for the meat of the schedule...Texas Tech and Notre Dame are up next.

2023g2: Texas Tech @ Wyoming
HB Steven Foster (#37) truck-sticks a Technician defender in the open field
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- One week after a controlled demolition of Portland State, the Pokes tried on a Power 5 opponent instead. The result was just about the same.
Wyoming suffered a rash of injuries in this ballgame, but none appear to be of the long-lasting variety. Strong safety Jesse Taylor (rSR) left in the 1Q with an MCL sprain. Starting HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) left a bit later in the 1Q with a strained pectoral. Rotation DL Boyce Wharton (rJR) was knocked out in the 3Q with an abdominal strain. Even star QB Darrin Green (rSR) wasn't immune--he left the game with a mild concussion late in the game.
Coach Bohl's squad started pretty fast against the Technicians. A 56-yard opening kickoff return by Numbers Conway (rSO) didn't lead anywhere except to a three-and-out. But, the defense provided a pick-six on TTU's first play from scrimmage. Linebacker Todd Wilson (rSO) undercut a screen pass and went all the way. Tech failed to convert on its next two drives, with a costly false start on 4th down leading to a missed field goal.
Wyoming would add a 36-yard FG of its own to make it 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Then, they'd add a trio of short touchdowns in the second quarter to extend the lead to 31-0. At this point the outcome wasn't in doubt.
It was actually 34-0 Wyoming and midway through the third quarter before TTU showed any signs of life. They basically came out in QB scramble mode after the half--which led to a missed FG. After getting the ball back next, Red Raider QB Ike Johnson (rSO) went 8/8 with a TD. Their next drive was an eleven-play 77-yard TD drive that featured an "NFL throw" on a 3rd down and long for the conversion.
So, in a 34-14 game, QB Darrin Green (rSR) exits with a concussion and backup QB Frankie Sanchez (rJR) commits turnovers on the first two drives he's in the game. After Sanchez's first pass was picked off, Coach Bohl decided the Pokes had better run it, so he fumbled on the next series. Luckily for Wyoming, and they didn't know it at the time, Texas Tech had already scored its last points of the game.
In bringing this game to the finish line, Sanchez connected with redshirt freshman WR Russell Thomas on a six-yard TD strike. That was Sanchez's 2nd and final pass attempt of the game. Two very action-packed attempts to be sure. The Pokes would add a 37-yard Tommy Wong (rSR) pick-six, the second WYO defensive TD of the game, for the final margin.
