2022g10: #5 Wyoming @ #20 Hawai'i
Wyoming WR Bryce Merchant (#85) went off for a huge game and a pylon jump at Aloha Stadium
HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Paniolo Trophy tasks me. It tasks me, and I shall have it. I'll chase it round the Moons of Nibia and round the Antares Maelstrom and round Perdition's flames before I give it up! [Coach Bohl paraphrasing Khan Noonien Singh]. Last year's loss to Hawai'i, I avenge thee.
It's quite clear, crystal in fact, that defense is no longer a part of the Paniolo Trophy rivalry series. After last year's 66-45 loss, Wyoming rebounded with a 69-47 win. So, who's counting, but that's 227 combined points in these last two games. Wyoming ran 101 plays in this game. And, heh, 69 points for the good guys this year.
Other than the ridiculously obvious shoot out aspect to this game, the entire game can be summed up in one word: Darrin Green. Yes, one word? The redshirt junior had his coming out party on the national stage, with the national stage being people up late at night watching Mountain West action on a channel deep into their cable package. What an amazing game, though. Green did it through the air, completing 37/58 (63%)--including nine "official" dropped passes--for 484 yards and five TDs (162.3 QB rating). He also did it on the ground, rushing 18 times for 129 yards (7.1 YPC) with three of those 18 "carries" being sacks. Green was responsible for 613 of Wyoming's 706 yards of total offense. It was a dominating effort that earned Wyoming's QB not only MWC Player of the Week honors, but he was the Offensive Player of the Week for the entire NCAA.
Oh, and and Darrin Green is a seriously tough dude. Right after halftime, he left the game temporarily with a dislocated non-throwing shoulder but came back for the very next series. After the game, Green joked that he wanted to let his buddy QB Terry Brooks (rSR) "get some stats, but not too much." Brooks capitalized on his one pass of the game with a 14-yard TD pass. A line of 1/1 for 14 yards and a TD apparently is good for a QB rating of 547.6. Nice to see ol' Terry get some live game reps.
Also worth mentioning was WR Bryce Merchant (SR) who had his best game as a Poke. With ten catches for 178 yards and three TDs, Merchant has put the gut-wrenching drop against Boise State in the rear view mirror. Instead, TE Tristan Hardin (rSO) had a case of the dropsies and wad benched after his third drop of the game. Can't afford to leave points and yards out there when playing football in a pinball machine like this.
The Hawai'i offensive attack was pretty relentless even with breaking in a new starting QB this season. In place of last year's graduated starting QB Michael Jackson, the Rainbow Warriors are playing 81-OVR Terry Washington (SR). And it doesn't really matter who it is, Air Raid sirens are going off. Hawai'i managed 313 yards of total offense in the first half on just 4:42 T.O.P. They didn't even run the ball until the 2nd quarter, and naturally their first rush broke for an 81-yard TD littered with broken tackles. The Warriors also hit on a 49-yard TD pass right before halftime. And, let's not even mention the 16 points they added in the final three minutes of the game to try and obliterate Wyoming's defensive stats.
How did Wyoming respond to that Hawai'i late surge? Well, by driving down for an unnecessary TD and going for two with :03 left. I've done far worse than kill you. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on... hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me. As you left her. Marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet...buried alive...buried alive. [Coach Bohl once again paraphrasing Khan and perhaps taking this rivalry a bit too seriously].
So, umm, yeah. Good win for dem Pokes.

Re: Wyoming | The Reboot (NCAA 14)
For the defense part, started off strong but have gotten myself into some shootouts lately. I think missing my All-American SS Tory McCollum who has been out injured/questionable for way longer than he was supposed to be, has really hurt me in pass defense and tackling.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

2022g11: #5 Wyoming @ Idaho
Wyoming WR Todd Bennett (#87) uses all of his 6'6" frame to high point over two Vandal defenders
MOSCOW, Idaho -- As a neutral observer there's not much more you could ask from a college football game. A little bit of bad blood as Idaho was aiming for a 3rd consecutive win over conference rival Wyoming. A trip to the MWC championship game on the line in this de facto division championship game. An ESPN Classic score of 2075 and a contest that was not decided until four overtimes had been played.
At first, it was all Idaho. Wyoming HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) fumbled the ball on the very first play from scrimmage and that set the tone for the 1st quarter. The Vandals scored first, on a 19-yard FG, and again on a 71-yard read-option keeper by 91-OVR QB Luke Roach (SR). The entire Wyoming defense basically got pantsed on that play. Once again, poor tackling cropped up as ~50 yards of Roach's run came after spinning through a lackluster tackle attempt. Roach was a tough customer and carried the Idaho offense on his shoulders for the most part. He would account for 565 yards versus 41 yards from everyone else, and he would also be responsible for seven TDs. Of his 104 rushing yards, not corrected for the five sacks he ate, 84 were officially yards-after-1st-contact. So he ran hard, Wyoming tackled badly, and the Pokes ate too many blocks. It will not be a sad occasion to see this kid graduate already. Roach has been a three-year starter for the Vandals and here are his stat lines against Wyoming over that time:
Code:2020: 35/46 (76%) | 551 yards | 5 TD | 2 INT | 203.8 RAT | 56 rush yards 2021: 39/54 (72%) | 514 yards | 6 TD | 1 INT | 185.1 RAT | 39 rush yards 2022: 36/53 (67%) | 461 yards | 5 TD | 2 INT | 164.5 RAT | 104 rush yards | 2 rush TD
Wyoming would not get on the scoreboard until the 2nd quarter. A ten-yard QB run by Darrin Green (rJR) cut it to a 10-7 Vandal lead. 80 seconds of game time later, it was a 17-7 advantage with the Roach-led Vandals motoring back down the other way, where Roach hooked up with 6'6" 223-lb WR Daniel Mirvil (SO) on a twelve-yard TD strike. Mirvil was one of several Vandal wideouts to have a good game; he caught seven balls for 94 yards and two TDs. The Pokes would counterattack with a 24-yard Joe Bennett field goal after they reached the Idaho 3-yard-line and started going backward. It ended up a 17-10 Idaho lead at halftime, and there was little hint of exactly how ridiculous this game would soon become.
Wyoming would tie the game for the first time in the 3rd quarter, as QB Terry Brooks (rSR) hooked up with WR Bryce Merchant (SR) on a 48-yard TD pass. Uhh, wait, why is Brooks in the game?
So, yeah, Darrin Green was knocked out of this one with a sprained pectoral and the ol' graybeard Brooks was in for better or worse. And it got a little worse, because then oft-injured HB Kelvin Mack Jr. left the game with an injury of his own. DB Woody Hale (rJR) left with a bruised ankle, too. Add all this to the still-missing/questionable starting SS and MLB and the Pokes felt like a M.A.S.H. unit fighting for its life. While the Pokes were adjusting to all the injuries, Idaho was nice enough to put up a quick ten points to re-take a 27-17 lead. Roach hit star WR Keith Reynolds on a 48-yard TD pass to answer the Wyoming 48-yard TD pass apparently, and sophomore kicker Adam Garrison made a 23-yard field goal. For all the high octane, Idaho's Achilles' heel in this game was that if they were in close, they had serious problems punching it in for the touchdown.
The last bits of the 3rd quarter and the entirety of the 4th quarter were both teams trading punches. Wyoming kicked a field goal at the end of the 3rd quarter and backup HB Steven Foster (rSO) plunged in from two yards out early in the 4th to tie it up again, this time at 27. That would be one of four touchdowns on just nine carries for the bruising back. Idaho answered with another short field goal with 7:19 left. Wyoming answered the answer with a 42-yarder, to make it a 30-30 game with 4:31 left.
On the Vandals' next possession, they were forced into a three-and-out and Coach Bohl's squad took over. A successful drive culminated in a six-yard Foster TD run. So, with :59 left in the game, Wyoming had finally taken its first lead at 37-30. Battling back from a 10-0 hole and while losing both the starting QB and starting HB to injuries. It was really a testament to Terry Brooks' leadership. Brooks played pretty well off the bench despite some overthrows; he completed 15/21 (71%) for 221 yards and a TD (175.5 QB rating). It's a luxury being able to bring a 94-OVR QB off the bench, I guess.
But this ball contest was still far from over. Idaho got the ball back and immediately started getting chunks. And gifts. The Vandals converted one set of downs on an off-screen USER roughing the passer penalty, which was difficult to stomach. They got into Wyoming territory and on 3rd-and-2 with ten seconds left, launched a hail mary pass that was....deflected and fell to the turf. So, on 4th-and-2 with :02 left, they launched another hail mary that was....caught by Keith Reynolds for a 34-yard TD between four Wyoming defenders. Reynolds just barely crossed the goal line with the ball tucked away in his chicken wing and defenders yanking him down. Reynolds ended up with seven catches for 136 yards and two TDs.
Headed to overtime in a 37-37 game, of course the Vandals won the coin toss (the cpu winning too many coin tosses is a serious problem in this game) and deferred. Wyoming led off with a painstaking seven-play TD drive with 3rd string HB Justin Lee (SO) scoring on a two-yard TD run. Idaho responded with a quick 22-yard TD pass to WR Kyle Davis. Davis was yet another WR with a nice game: five catches for 77 yards and a TD. 44-44 and headed to OT #2.
In the second overtime, Roach scored on a three-yard QB keeper. Wyoming would equalize using a run-dominant drive and plowing in from one-yard out.
Now with PATs out of the question Wyoming took the opening possession of OT #3 and methodically worked their way in close, with Foster getting his 4th rushing TD of the game. Coach Bohl decided to try for a little razzle dazzle on the two-point try; he subbed in 3rd string QB Frankie Sanchez (rSO) who is a dual threat type. The idea was a designed rollout/RPO type play, but Sanchez was contained and snuffed out on a failed try.
Needing a stop, Wyoming's defense immediately failed in that regard as Idaho's first play of triple overtime was a 25-yard TD pass from Roach to Mirvil. And, strangely enough, the Idaho coaching staff must've liked Coach Bohl's earlier playcall because they tried something similar with Roach and the Idaho QB was tripped up and fell to the turf at the six-inch line, barely coming up short on the two-point conversion attempt. So, still no decision in a 57-57 game, we are heading for the decisive OT #4.
Idaho gets the ball to start. Roach drops back and the pass is.....INTERCEPTED. They picked him off! Wait, he's bringing it out?!? Wyoming nickel CB Tommy Wong (rJR) has open field ahead. 30...35...45...50...he escapes an Idaho offensive lineman! 45...40...30...20...10...touchdown! Wyoming's secondary has come through in quadruple overtime for a pick-six...wait...is that?...a flag is on the field? I wonder what this could be? Are they going to call clipping on the run back? Oh, that's a bad call...that's the wong call.
The interception would stand, but due to a clipping call on the run back, the Pokes would need to win the game using their offense. With 3rd string QB Sanchez still in the game, he gashed Idaho for an 18-yard run and fell to the turf like a feather dead center between the hash marks. You might even say that Sanchez did Idaho dirty. The Wyoming kicker would handle the rest in driving the game-winner right down the middle of the uprights for the somewhat insane 60-57 (4OT) Wyoming win.

2022g12: BYU @ #5 Wyoming
Wyoming dual threat QB Darrin Green (#6) continues his Heisman-contending campaign
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- With the Mountain Division already wrapped up after last week's epic win over Idaho, there was no rest for the weary. Four-win BYU played rival Wyoming very tough and it took an improbable late comeback for Coach Bohl's squad to emerge with a 44-38 (OT) win.
First of all, it's worth noting that this game is a conference game, a rivalry game (the 82nd such meeting in the series), and a Senior Day game for the Pokes at War Memorial Stadium. Sort of a big deal all around.
The game began with both teams feeling the nerves. BYU went three-and-out on its opening two drives; Wyoming turned the ball over on downs and fumbled a slot-option pitch on its opening two forays. The Pokes clearly haven't practiced this option play enough, because QB Darrin Green (rJR) was pitching as his slot man was already being tackled. The turnover set up a short field for the Cougars and they kicked a field goal to get on the scoreboard. The 33-yard FG seemed to energize BYU, because they scored another TD on the next drive. A drive that included a double tipped pass (the ball was tipped by two different Wyoming defenders) that was caught by BYU. Bravo. 10-0 BYU at the end of one quarter.
As has happened so often this season, Wyoming's offense slumbered through the first quarter only to get rolling a bit later on. The Pokes got on the board with a five-yard TD scamper from the do-everything QB and scored again with a 50-yard bomb from Green to WR Bryce Merchant (SR). Merchant has really emerged as a deep threat as the season has progressed. However, the 14-10 Wyoming lead would be short-lived. BYU worked its way down the field double quick time using the screen pass and scored on a six-yard Tom Black (SR) run with :18 to play. It would be a 17-14 BYU advantage at the half.
Coming out of the break, both teams would trade touchdowns. BYU struck with 6:28 to play in the 3rd when QB Paris Hamby (rJR) hooked up with All-MWC wideout Nick Jones (rSR). Jones came into this ballgame with 77 receptions for 1268 yards and 12 TDs. WYO answered with Green's 2nd TD pass of the game, this time a ten-yard pass to WR Cedric Weaver (rSO). BYU would add a short field goal to make it a 27-21 Mormon lead heading into the 4th quarter.
Wyoming scored first in the 4th quarter; Green's 3rd TD pass of the contest was a nice little six-yard out cut to the right side to TE Tristan Hardin (rSO) from a trips WRs to the left formation. BYU answered on the very next play with a 75-yard pass from Hamby to 6'6" 237-lb WR Nick Hood (SO). This leviathan would catch four passes for 149 yards in total. BYU added the two-point conversion to go up 35-28. Then, the Cougars added a 20-yard field goal (their 3rd from inside 35 yards) with 3:30 left in the game. Down 38-28, things were not looking too hot for the Pokes.
Wyoming would take two minutes off the clock in working its way down to BYU's 10-yard-line. But, that drive would stall. In a 4th down situation with 1:30 to play and needing two scores, the Pokes opted for the 27-yard field goal to make it a 38-31 game. With all three timeouts left, and realizing it's near impossible to even get close to recovering an onside kick, Wyoming kicked it deep. They'd easily stop a very conservative BYU drive while using up all three timeouts in the process.
So here we go. A seven-point deficit, about one minute to play, and no timeouts. And before you know it, completion, scramble, completion, completion, scramble, completion. Wyoming is at BYU's 9-yard-line and Green sees a crack and takes off for six. With :10 left, Wyoming had fully erased the ten-point BYU lead from 200 seconds ago. 38-38 and headed to overtime. Again. In the process, Green put up another impressive day at the office: 25/42 (59%), 367 passing yards, 3 TD, 2 INT, 26 carries for 120 yards (4.6 YPC) with 2 rushing TDs. And all this despite being sacked five times, leaving the game for just two plays in the middle of the 4th quarter with a strained tricep.
In overtime, a rare occurrence took place. The cpu lost a coin toss. The Pokes chose to play defense.
The Wyoming defense wanted to make this overtime session as anticlimactic as possible. They gave up nothing on 1st down. Nothing on 2nd down. And then FS Noah Myers (rFR), who struggled all game in coverage, came on a blitz while the BYU QB ended up on his back and the ball on the turf. BYU pounced on Hamby's fumble to set up 4th-and-20. Which was apparently too far out for BYU to consider the 52-yard FG try. The Cougars' QB was knocked out of the game as well thanks to Myers' most righteous hit.
The backup QB came in to throw a 16-yard completion on 4th-and-20, which was quite alright with Coach Bohl. All the Pokes had to do now was score, and a few plays later FB Tyrone Ford (JR) was rolling around in the end zone, having scored the winning TD for his seniors.

Sad that Boise can pull out the win against you but not manage to beat anyone else. I can't believe Idaho is as good as they are in your dynasty. They are normally one of the worst teams in the country.
Hopefully your rematch and a win over Hawaii will propel you back into the hunt for Top 5 finish. Or maybe we get lucky and Bama,Oklahoma and OSU can all lose in their title games.Comment
