I read up on the story, and yes it involves the 2 schools ROTC unit doing a run with the game ball to the state border. Thus the Border War, and the trophy is a former Vietnam's combat boot that was bronzed.

Great job beating Boise State and keeping your undefeated dreams alive. Would you be happy with Wyoming getting a shot at a National Championship as a G5 team? Good luck the rest of the way WTNY!

I think I'd be ok with that. This team has been on the radar as an up-and-comer for a few years already kinda like when Boise State got big. Boise State never got to the title game, but there were a couple of years where it wouldn't have shocked people. Also, the win at Notre Dame gives this year's Wyoming team a lot of credibility as far as strength of schedule. Speaking of which, how about we take a look at the updated BCS rankings, shall we? Coming soon.

              2023g9: #3 Wyoming @ Air Force

Wyoming QB Darrin Green (#6) takes it to the house for one of Wyoming's 5 rushing TDs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Wyoming shook off a slow start to run their unbeaten record to 9-0 (6-0). Due to a spate of upsets, including #2 Georgia Tech losing to #11 Miami, the Pokes are likely to climb in behind Ohio State at #2 in the BCS rankings. The #1-ranked Buckeyes dispatched Michigan State 24-7.

In the present game, a 7-3 1st quarter Air Force lead ended up spiraling out of control for the Falcons. The Pokes did start off unevenly; a promising opening drive turned into a disappointing field goal. The next drive was a 3-and-out. But, Wyoming scored three straight touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to assert themselves with a 24-14 halftime lead.

Air Force did try to remain competitive in this game. After going down 24-7, AFA QB Jamie Gordon (rSR) hit one of his rare successful completions--a 35-yard touchdown pass to WR Andy Sanders (rJR). Gordon successfully deked 64-OVR safety Tim Carr (rFR) into run support before throwing into his vacated area to the streaking Sanders between the free safety and the boundary corner. Carr was only playing in this game because regular starter Jesse Taylor (rSR) was rendered inoperable with a strained pec in the previous game. The Falcons would come oh so close to cutting the lead to 24-21, when a last second heave was tipped up in the air by Wyoming's secondary and hauled in for 54 yards by WR Alex Gilliam (rSR) who dragged Wyoming defenders down to the 1-yard-line before going down with no time left. Air Force passed for 120 yards total and 99 came on those two dodgy plays.

Wyoming set out to exploit an undersized and inexperienced defensive line and did just that. The Pokes didn't turn the knife as much as they probably could have, but 47 carries for 320 yards (6.8 YPC) isn't slouching either. Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) led the team with 18 carries for 73 yards (4.0 YPC) and two TDs. But, it was QB Darrin Green (rSR) that really made his mark. Green carried 15 times for 148 yards (9.8 YPC) with a TD while proving that AFA's defense wasn't ready for the Wyoming option game. Green was inaccurate on his first few passes, but ended up completing 14/23 (60%) for a modest 152 yards and no turnovers. The Pokes have become somewhat spoiled in that a turnover-free game with 300 total yards for Green is met with a collective "meh." Whether he was running over linebackers and safeties or outflanking them, it was a quality effort for DG6.

Wyoming HB Jamaal Harlow (rFR) was also productive in the run game; he ran seven times for 66 yards and a score. Backup HB Steven Foster (rJR) was basically given the game off it seemed, with just three carries for nine yards and a touchdown.

Coach Bohl was quite pleased with the defensive effort. They pitched a shutout in the 2nd half for the second straight game. Going back three games now, Wyoming has allowed just six second half points total. And 43 points overall (14.3 PPG). Air Force's vaunted running attack (they ran 17 times before attempting a pass) came in averaging 241.6 YPG (20th) and were held to 192 yards rushing, with only 49 coming in the second half.

The big turning point in this game, though, was when Wyoming forced turnovers on back-to-back possessions--both fumbles by the Air Force QB--deep in Air Force territory. The defense really catalyzed the 39-7 run Wyoming would go on after trailing 7-3 early on.

Well that Notre Dame loss didn't help your strength of schedule there, but with G.T. losing, I would assume you will jump to #2

Looks like Nevada's stay in the Top-25 is going to be short lived too.

I'd prefer that Notre Dame not lose...but they could've conceivably jumped me at some point if they stayed a 1-loss team. So?? Some good, some bad.

Have a weak Hawai'i team coming up (weak due to coaching turnover, imo) a weak Idaho team (ditto) and an interesting BYU team that almost knocked me off last season. So, Hawai'i and Idaho have me right where they want me. The plot thickens...

                    2023g10: Hawai'i @ #2 Wyoming

Who says white men can't jump? WYO cornerback Woody Hale (#34) soars through the sky like a pterodactyl for the one-handed INT

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- That was....expected? The Rainbow Warriors suffered a recent coaching change and graduation of a couple of robo QBs along with a 1st round NFL pick at safety. The result? Getting tripled up at War Memorial Stadium apparently. Seriously struggling in 2023. How badly? How about 113th-ranked offense and 103rd-ranked defense? Quite poor. One might even deign to call Hawai'i rubbish this year. Gone are the days of QB Michael Jackson moonwalking all over Wyoming's defense with Coach Bohl going home and angrily polishing off a bottle of whisky, rallying, but ultimately going to sleep and not even dreaming.

Thus, it came as no surprise when Wyoming, playing at home, pancaked the sputtering islanders. Welcome to the mainland! It was almost like Wyoming's offense and defense were a pair of European swallows working in concert to carry a coconut on a line. Wyoming is now 10-0 and continues to nip at Brutus' heels, with the Buckeyes blowing out Penn State as well. Found them? In Mercia? This is a temperate zone...Hawai'i couldn't adjust to that.

This game was mildly competitive until Wyoming put up 35 in the 2nd quarter alone. QB Darrin Green (rSR) continues to play at a very high level. He tossed four TD passes in the 1st half, was victimized by a sideline tip-drop-INT thanks to WR J.C. McCrary (rSR), rested a bit in the 4th quarter, but came back in to throw a 2nd interception to cap off an "eff you" possession. See, Hawai'i went for the onside kick down 42 points with one minute to play, which prompted Coach Bohl to put his starting offense back in while trying to go for 70. It backfired, but, well...Coach Bohl's heart was in the right place. You've got two empty halves of coconut and you're bangin' 'em together.

Lopsided in all aspects, there were many strong performances on the Wyoming side. Green completed 17/21 (80%) for 263 yards with four TDs and two INTs (229.9 QB rating)--one of the interceptions was most definitely on the receiver. Green also motored for 103 rushing yards on 14 carries (7.3 YPC) and a pair of TDs. HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR), backup QB Frankie Sanchez (rJR), and backup HB Jamaal Harlow (rFR) accounted for the other three rushing TDs. What? Ridden on a horse? Mack racked up 128 rushing yards on 17 rushes (7.5 YPC) while catching five passes for 64 yards and a TD that way. He could grip it by the husk. Redshirt freshman wunderkind WR Russell Thomas continues to emerge as well. Thomas caught six balls for 107 yards and two of Green's four TD passes. With 673 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns, there's hardly anything to complain about. Unless you find scoring only seven TDs in eight red zone trips to be offensive.

The Pokes were pretty solid on defense as well. The defense held Hawai'i to -1 yards rushing, possibly the first time a Coach Bohl defense has held an opponent to negative rushing yardage.

While Hawai'i QB Antonio Leonard (rSR) topped 300 yards passing, it was mostly because the Rainbow Warriors didn't really do anything but pass. And they kept getting the ball back so quickly after Wyoming's quick TD strikes. A good deal of those yards came about in garbage time. Leonard was picked off three times by three different Wyoming defenders. Tommy Wong (rSR) got Leonard in the first quarter, but was knocked out of the game with a hip pointer a few minutes later. Fellow cornerback Woody Hale (rSR), playing on Wong's side after Wong left, made the most majestic interception so far in this dynasty, period. He cut off the WR on the boundary, swooped across like Michael Jordan doing the Lakers dirty in the 1991 NBA Finals, and snatched the ball one-handed. Also worth mentioning is nose tackle Alfonzo McDade (rSO). The 6'0" 381-pounder is always working hard in the trenches, but pork chop came away with a stuffed stat sheet today. He made five tackles, all for loss, and had a sack. How? Let's just say Hawai'i leaned on the screen pass like a five-ounce bird relies on teamwork to carry a one-pound coconut. After the first half-dozen screens, McDade--heretofore thought to be non-migratory--journeyed into the flat to blow up many a screen play. Of Hawai'i's 39 completions, twelve were caught by RB Michael Carter (SO). All of those were screen passes. Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?

squad is on a nice little roll. Great photo of Hale and the 1-handed INT.

The Michael Jackson line in the last report had me laughing, in fact the entire report was a tour-de-force in dynasty writing, loving all the Monty Python quotes as well.

Good luck the rest of the way, if the Cowboys keep running the ball like this they could be a threat to go all the way this season.

                          2023g11: Idaho @ #2 Wyoming

WYO HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (#30) takes it over the pylon in the same game he set the school's career rushing record

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The big take home from this game is that Wyoming's 30-10 win clinched the Mountain Division. Colorado State had been keeping up pretty gamely with the 11-0 (8-0) Pokes, but with just one conference game left and Wyoming's 50-32 win over CSU earlier this season, Rich Rod's Rams will just have to try again in 2024. Wyoming's conference title game opponent is not yet clear; Fresno State, Nevada, and San Jose State are all vying for that honor. Stepping back to look at the larger picture, #1 Ohio State and #2 Wyoming are the only undefeateds remaining in FBS. Michigan and BYU are up next, respectively.

Count Idaho among a few other Mountain West teams having a down year. It seems like the Vandals are still finding their way after losing three-year starting QB Luke Roach to graduation. New starter Donnell Roberts (rSO) did his best, but was battered pretty thoroughly. Roberts completed 26/32 (81%) for 165 yards and a TD; he ran a whopping 25 times for 56 yards (2.2 YPC) with seven of those "rushes" actually being sacks. The 6'0" 226-pound scrambler from Merced, CA definitely played true to his scouting report.

The Vandal defense kept them around for one half at least. It was an uncharacteristically poor showing for Wyoming's offense in the first half. Just six points and a 6-3 lead. The Pokes struggled getting receivers open, running the option, and preventing Vandal defensive linemen from sniffing out screen plays. Moreover, offensive coordinator Scott Frost seemed a bit stubborn in trying to get the passing game working, when a simple rushing attack was working quite well. Getting back to ground and pound in the 2nd half gained Wyoming their edge and the passing game flowed from that a bit later on.

QB Darrin Green (rSR) accounted for three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. Green gained 283 of Wyoming's 444 yards of offense. He didn't turn the ball over. Yawn. He certainly has spoiled Wyoming fans. The fave target in this one was Cedric Weaver (rJR); the 6'4" wideout caught five balls for 103 yards and a TD.

Green's sidekick Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) was efficient in running the ball, gaining 98 yards on only 15 carries (6.5 YPC). Mack also caught a nicely set up motion cross screen for a 14-yard TD with a good amount of pylon at the end. Gratifyingly, Mack became the leading rusher in Wyoming school history* when he passed Weldon Adler's 3272 career rushing yards late in the 3rd quarter. It seems like only yesterday this young turk was a true freshman and now here he is setting school records as a senior and Heisman candidate. They matriculate so fast.

*Discounting Brian Hill's 2016 IRL campaign which took place after this dynasty began.

Perhaps most impressive was Wyoming's defense. The Pokes have become better and better as they've gotten deeper into conference play. They held the opponent to under 300 yards of offense for just the second time all season. It was also the fifth straight game in which Wyoming has allowed 21 or fewer points. The pass rush was ferocious and the front seven was living rent free in the QB's peripheral vision. He was constantly being flushed and scrambling. Sacked seven times. The backup was sacked once as well after the starting QB was knocked out momentarily. MLB Mario Roberson (rSO) stood out with twelve tackles and two sacks. Dime corner Shaun Miller (FR) and OLB Forest Steadman (rSR) both had two sacks; SS Jesse Taylor (rSR) and OLB Elijah Rice (rSR) contributed one sack a piece. The only downside to the defensive performance was when CB #1 Tommy Wong (rSR) went down for the rest of the season with a torn pectoral. Redshirt freshman Brandon King (nickel) and true freshman Shaun Miller (dime) are just going to have to step up. Somewhat concerning, but both have played well.

                            2023g12: #2 Wyoming @ BYU

WYO nose tackle Alfonzo McDade (#93) impacts BYU with all the fury and force of The Book of Mormon

PROVO, Utah -- In an anticlimactic end to a spotless 2023 regular season, undefeated Wyoming bullied longtime Mountain West rival BYU to the tune of 41-13 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. It's not technically a trophy game, but it's most definitely a venerable rivalry series; beating the Cougs is mandatory for the Pokes.

Even Joseph Smith, with or without the help of Moroni, couldn't have done much to stem the tide in this one. Brigham Young was missing 94-OVR senior QB Paris Hamby along with their starting left tackle and top two linebackers. All out for the season. A full-strength BYU squad forced overtime in Laramie last season, but this depleted version with a tight end playing left tackle stood nary a chance.

Wyoming stud QB Darrin Green (rSR) didn't even need to have a great game in this one. In one of his shakier performances of an otherwise stellar season, Green was sacked twice, threw two picks, and barely topped 200 yards of total offense. Fie! Woe! A pox on his house! Get backup QB Frankie Sanchez warmed up! Green's final stat line: 16/29 (55%) for 147 yards with two TDs and two INTs, ten rushes for 66 yards. He did battle with a plucky BYU secondary playing with some sticky fingaz. Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) perhaps had an even quieter game with 16 carries for 54 yards (3.3 YPC) to go with four catches for 23 yards. It's doubtful that Mack's Heisman position (entered in 2nd place) will improve after this clunker. As a team, Wyoming was held below 200 yards rushing for the first time all season--a far cry from their 516 rushing yards against New Mexico earlier this season.

The WYO offense was spread around like a thin layer of apricot jam on a slice of crunchy toast rather than channeled through one or two star players. Backup HB Steven Foster (rJR) and WR Cedric Weaver (rJR) both rushed for a TD; Weaver and tight end Tristan Hardin (rJR) both accounted for a receiving TD. Hardin has been on the side of a milk carton for most of the season, so it was nice to see him haul in that 25-yard touchdown catch.

The real show in this game was Wyoming's defense giving the business to BYU's offense. This game marked the 6th straight in which Coach Bohl's defense has held the opponent to 21 or fewer points. The only time that BYU felt dangerous was a tackle-breaking, tour-de-force farce of a touchdown drive coming out of halftime. Brigham Young's QB Matt Jones (rJR) was the scrambling type and was sacked four times and picked off three times. Other than that, great game bro. Jones completed 26/34 (76%) for 229 yards with zero touchdowns; he ran 15 times for 57 yards (3.8 YPC) while fumbling once.

In particular, this was really CB Brandon King's (rFR) coming out party. The King of Provo for a day. King had perhaps the best single game performance of any Wyoming defender in this entire dynasty run. The eight tackles and three tackles for loss are very nice for a cornerback. Then, you could factor in the sack-fumble. And why not the early pick-six he took back for 36 yards to give Wyoming an early 10-3 lead. While were at it, we could also mention his second interception of the game, late and in Wyoming's own end zone. Legend has it that King was also giving sound financial advice, helping usher old grannies to their seats, and leading a troop of Boy Scouts over on the sideline during this game. Complete game? No, completest game. And very heartening for a team that lost starting CB Tommy Wong (rSR) for the season in the previous game. The 78-OVR King out of Lockwood, MT had been playing the nickel position until Wong's demise. How can something so Wong end up so right?

The undefeated bowling ball that is Wyoming Football will welcome the Fresno State Bulldogs (7-5, 6-3) from the down in valley up to 7280 feet elevation for the MWC title game. With Michigan taking care of #1 Ohio State 28-7, the Wyoming Cowboys will ascend to #1 in the land. And Coach Bohl is now just a win over Fresno State away from playing for a National Championship....Stay tuned.
