      2022ccg: #13 Hawai'i @ #6 Wyoming

Hawai'i hoists the MWC Trophy after stunning Wyoming at War Memorial Stadium

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- These two teams have been adding fresh new layers to the Paniolo Trophy rivalry series of late. Some scorching shootouts. Some late scores designed to humiliate the other. And now a cliffhanger in a conference championship game. This time it was Hawaii's time to shine, scoring on a poorly-defended screen pass touchdown for a 35-32 win as time expired.

So, uh, let's talk about screen passes. The play seemed to be in heavy rotation for the Rainbow Warriors. Of their 72 plays called on offense, Hawai'i ran 15 screen passes. Pretty much every 3rd down meant it was a screen pass down. Just like how when pizza's on a bagel, you can eat pizza anytime. And even knowing that, Hawai'i still converted 10/15 (66%) on 3rd down. The final play was absolute trickeration, however, and Wyoming was expecting anything but another screen pass from 14 yards out and the clock with just two ticks yet to tick off. But 2nd-Team All-American Hawai'i QB Terry Washington hit the fullback, the play totally caught Wyoming's quarters man-under 3-deep defense napping, and pulling linemen treated WYO defensive backs like bowling pins on the PBA tour. That play was a slaughter and one Coach Bohl won't soon forget. Washington continues the tradition of frighteningly good Rainbow Warrior QB play against Wyoming: 37/47 (78%) for 348 yards and three total TDs. He was 6/6 for 77 yards and a TD on their 34-second game-winning drive.

So how did Coach Bohl's team arrive at this position? To be screen-passed into submission? Frankly, the Warriors seemed to want this game a little bit more and played a cleaner game. You can talk about Wyoming HB Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) and him fumbling the ball on the goal line in the 1st quarter after a punishing hit by future NFL player/Hawai'i SS Tate Fuller (rSR). Left seven points off the board there. You can talk about the elite blocking by the Hawai'i O Line anchored by 81-OVR center Andrew Frederick (SR) from Compton, CA. Or talk about the efficiency of converting 66% of the time on 3rd down, not turning the ball over, and scoring five TDs in five red zone trips. You can talk about the screen passes and we already have. You can talk about QB Darrin Green (rJR) fumbling on the ensuing two drives after Mack's fumble, and despite the Pokes not losing those fumbles, it must've impacted the playcalling. And, by all means, please talk about yet another broken-tackle-a-thon; the Rainbow Warrior ground game was "officially" credited with six broken tackles despite losing their bell cow HB Henry Keyes (rSR) to a mild concussion early in the 1st quarter. Keyes was blown up on a read-option keeper which the Hawai'i QB smartly kept to make it a 7-0 early Hawai'i lead.

Wyoming perhaps made a strategic mistake in how this game was played. Darrin Green has been inching up in the Heisman race due to the team's ability to really light it up through the air as well as on the ground. However, seeing that Wyoming had ceded 165 points to the Rainbow Warriors over the previous three meetings (55 PPG), the Pokes sought to slow the tempo down a bit. It seemed to work to a point, Hawai'i only scored 35 this time. But, the problem with that was Wyoming scored just 32 as a result of the more methodical game plan. Sure, it was also due to the Hawai'i secondary shutting Wyoming down, but 175 passing yards on 24 attempts is quite low. And Green didn't even have a bad game: 17/24 (70%) 175 yards two TD one INT, 16 carries for 131 yards (8.1 YPC) and two rushing TDs. But, maybe he could've done more. This year's team, without a workhorse back like school legend Weldon Adler who graduated last year, has needed everything he's been able to provide.

It's not the end of the world for Coach Bohl's Cowboys, though. The team has matriculated into the MWC championship game three of the previous four years, winning twice. Coach Bohl's team has double-digit wins in four of the previous five years. And, being ranked #6 in the BCS before this close loss to another ranked team likely means the Pokes will get into a BCS bowl--it's unlikely they drop below #14. An Orange Bowl berth against a blue blood program perhaps? Hmmmm.

        2021: WYO 30, CLEM 28

        *All-time series

        WYO leads 1-0

*These two programs met for the first time ever last season when Wyoming recorded a 30-28 upset at Death Valley over the, then, #5 Clemson Tigers.

*Clemson was controversially leapfrogged by the Florida Gators in the final BCS rankings. Even though Clemson was ranked #3 before their 49-42 ACC Championship game victory over ranked Virginia Tech, the Tigers remained stuck at #3 as the Gators upset #1 Alabama 45-35 in the SEC Championship game. The 2-loss Gators (0.992 BCS rating) rose from #5 to #2 and are playing for the Natty while the 1-loss Tigers (0.992 BCS rating) head to the Orange Bowl.

Sad to see you lose bro, but I’m happy Hawai’i did so well for themselves. Awesome to see you make it to the orange bowl! Good luck against Clemson, seems like a tough draw. Did Hawai’i get a BCS bid as well?

                2022bowl: #3 Clemson vs #10 Wyoming

Coach Bohl and star QB Darrin Green (#6) enjoy a bowl of oranges

MIAMI, Fla. -- Coming into this game Coach Bohl wasn't sure how things would go. Rematching against a Clemson team that the Pokes barely beat 30-28 last season. Clemson being angry at getting "jumped" by Florida in the BCS rankings. Clemson's star 99-OVR QB Erik Marshall (rSR) protected by an offensive line where none of the big uglies are lower than 88-OVR. A 97-OVR running back in Adam Hill (SR). All of these items made for a sleepless night.

Once the players started knocking each other silly, those doubts were erased and what remained was a predictably close game.

Clemson was stuck in neutral early on as their QB had some unforseen issues with his accuracy. The Tigers punted on their opening drive, tossed an INT on the 2nd drive, and went three-and-out on the third try. In fact, Clemson completed only two passes in the entire first half. When Clemson did score, as they did in the four-minute drill near the end of the half, it was a drive wholly set up by broken tackles and Erik Marshall romped for a 22-yard TD scamper.

On the Wyoming side of the ledger, it was apparent a low-scoring game was in the offing. The Pokes failed to convert a 4th-and-1 from Clemson's 3-yard-line on their opening drive and were shutout in the 1st quarter. Wyoming did get on the board before Clemson, with a 22-yard Joe Bennett (JR) field goal where Coach Bohl would've normally gone for it. The Pokes found the end zone a few minutes later when Kelvin Mack Jr. (JR) got it wet from one yard out. Of course, setting up the boomerang, broken tackle-driven cpu scoring drive described above.

The 2nd half was one for the defense lovers out there up until the bitter end. The teams would exchange field goals at a rate of three Wyoming FGs for a single Clemson field goal so denizens of the Orange Bowl found an unusual 19-10 Wyoming lead on the scoreboard deep into the 4th quarter.

After Wyoming kicked its 4th field goal of the day, and third of the half, with :53 left all that was left was the shouting. And cpu-controlled Clemson would get this author to shout out loud several times in those waning seconds.

Exhibit A was a glorious example of comeback code in this game where, on 3rd-and-14, Wyoming FS Noah Myers (rFR) got through on a beautifully-designed safety blitz and launched into the Clemson QB for a free hit only to, for lack of a better descriptor, "doink" off of the QB while allowing the QB to do a full turn, hop onto his back foot to throw a ball up for grabs while another Wyoming DB foot-planted himself out of the play. The result was an "easy" long conversion for Clemson under a seemingly impossible set of circumstances. Really a fine piece of gameplay. A true masterwork.

Not to be outdone, on Clemson's next 3rd down play, 3rd-and-1, was Exhibit B. The Clemson QB broke a pair of tackles in the backfield--including one by a 300-lb lineman--on his way to a 37-yard rush up the middle, which led to a 17-yard TD pass to cut it to a mere 19-17 Wyoming advantage with :11 left.

Naturally, the Clemson Tigers would recover the ensuing onside kick and take a few cracks at the game-winning hail mary before, mercifully, all of their attempts were batted to the turf to fall incomplete. Praise be. That BIG GAME SKILL/LIGHT A FIRE stuff is a heckuva drug. Damn, Dabo.

At the end of the day, Wyoming had 19 points to Clemson's 17, which means that Wyoming won the game. The Pokes outgained (385 to 344) and out-rushed (208 to 160) Clemson. The Pokes held a 3:1 advantage in time of possession.

Wyoming turned the ball over zero times as QB Darrin Green (rJR) repeatedly made smart decisions with the football OR got very lucky as Clemson defensive backs showed everyone, including Kirk Herbstreit, why they don't play wide receiver. Green finished his first full year as a starter with an even-keeled performance in a huge game: 21/33 (63%) 208 passing yards (116.5 QB rating) to go with a conservative nine carries for 32 yards (3.5 YPC). Clemson's defense was a different animal in terms of having the speed to discourage Green from chunk option plays. Green's sidekick Kelvin Mack Jr. had a pretty heavy workload. He carried 24 times for 90 yards (3.7 YPC) and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 41 yards.

                Mmmmmmm....oranges...

Got to meet the real Coach Bohl today in Boise as Wyoming is in town to play against C. Michigan tomorrow, as Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosts a bowl breakfast for both teams. Also got to meet former Laker great and Oregon State grad, A.C. Green who was the keynote speaker. It was a good day. Cowboy's will have my cheering tomorrow.

The real Coach Bohl? You mean there's one realer than the one in this imaginary thread? I hope he's a nice guy or I might have to retire him.

2022 Season Wrap Part 1: Rankings and Stuff

We'll do this end of season stuff in 3 parts--this is part 1. How did everything work out? Who won it all? Which teams are conspicuously absent from the Top 25?

Next up will be offseason part 2 of 3--an awards and stats gala! And then we'll take a closer look at Wyoming a bit more specifically to close out offseason business.

So here we are 6 years into this dynasty and there hasn't been a repeat National Champion yet. This time, Florida parlayed a late win over Alabama in the SECCG to get them into the Natty where, as the 2-loss underdog, they defeated the Sooners. Oklahoma has now played in 3 straight BCS National Championship games, but they've lost the previous 2 to SEC foes. ESSSSS EEEEE SEEEE!!!! ESSS EEEEEEE SEEEEEE!!!!

Once again, Notre Dame gets left out just barely. Maybe they should consider joining a conference? Tis now 2 years in a row where a strong ND team has entered BCS season just outside the top 2. They certainly garnered some #1 votes after owning Bama in the Sugar Bowl.

And don't adjust your sets, but yes there are 2 Mountain West teams in the top 4 of the final rankings. The Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors gave teams all kinds of trouble down the stretch, beating rival Wyoming in the conference title game and then taking out Wisconsin in the Fiesta Bowl. Too bad for the 'Bows that their head coach Jim Knowles jumped to Ole Miss after the Rebels canned Mark Hudspeth. Wyoming is not sad to see Knowles take his QB-whispering playbook and ply his trade far away from the Mountain West.

Not a whole lot of surprises rounding out the top 10--it's getting more normal to see Wyoming up in the mix. There were some surprises a bit lower down. Southern Miss finished #14. Rutgers finished #15 after winning the B1G and losing in the Rose Bowl. The Red Wolves of Arkansas State finished #16. Oregon State (#20) and Rice (#22) were also interesting entrants to the rankings. Beaver Owls so to speak.

                          ============

                          How about ye olde carousel?

Notice that neither USC nor Tennessee appear in the rankings. Well, both programs decided it was time for a change.

Clay Helton is out, and the Men of Troy turn to Kennedy Polamalu as the new head man. That move makes a lot of sense. Polamalu is a USC alum and was generating a lot of buzz as the OC at Notre Dame in recent years. Helton resurfaces as the HC at South Alabama.

In Knoxville, Butch Jones meets a merciful end and the Vols plug in erstwhile South Florida HC Ira Crosby. Jury is out on this one as Crosby is a fake coach. Although that sounds like a move UT would make.

Josh Heupel got promoted from OC to HC at Hawai'i. Jim McElwain is history at Purdue after a single season, but doesn't go far--he's the new OC at Notre Dame! Justin Fuente takes over in West Lafayette. Fuente was the OC for the champeen Gators this past season after being let go from VT the year before. And....Butch Jones will be the new Florida OC next season. lol

In one of the more odd succession plans in recent history, the retired Bill Snyder has been replaced by Hugh Freeze in Manhattan. A boon to escort services in the area. There's no place like home. Freeze had been the HC at UL-Lafayette. Freeze's old seat will be kept warm by Kirby Smart? Yeah, well, apparently UGA didn't end up so well for him, but ULL might help rehabilitate his stock even more after coaching some great Wisconsin defenses lately.

UCF gave Scott Frost the old heave-ho, and the Knights plucked Wyoming OC Chris Creighton after a 1-year stint in Laramie. To add intrigue, the Pokes ended up with Frost as the new OC. Basically, UCF traded its HC for Wyoming's OC. No tradebacks! The means Oregon-style offense is a-comin' to Laramie.

As for the Craig Bohl coaching tree...former Wyoming OC Andy Kotelnicki was fired as the HC at SMU. Kotelnicki makes an interesting move in going to Navy to be the OC. He doesn't even run the option. Former WYO defensive coordinator Steve Stanard was let go as Auburn's DC, with Mark Dantonio being brought in from Virginia Tech to replace him. Stanard ended up taking the DC job at Middle Tennessee State.

Finally, Mike Leach is the new OC at UMass! Brady Hoke takes the DC job at Troy! How the mighty have fallen.
