    2020g11: Wyoming @ Idaho

Vandal wideout Keith Reynolds takes one of his two TD catches to the house.

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Defense has been an issue for Wyoming in many games this season, but this was the first time they let it totally get out of hand. The result was an emphatic blowout at the Kibbie Dome.

It's a struggle to imagine that this game featured a 14-6 Wyoming lead with :34 left in the 1st half. Then Idaho got their engine revving 28 seconds later on a 46-yard bomb from Luke Roach to Keith Reynolds, plus the two-point conversion, to tie it at the half. Tyler Hall, the cornerback victimized on that route, was just burned and embarassed on a simple go route where he never had a chance. It was definitely a facepalm moment for Defensive Coordinator D.J. Eliot. It was also the third time this season that Eliot's unit has allowed 50+ points.

Roach had a special game, especially in the 2nd half, for the Vandals. He completed 35/46 (76%) for 551 yards with five TDs against two INTs (203.8 QB rating). He connected on three passes of 40+ yards--all of which ended up as touchdowns. His favorite underneath target was senior tight end Ryan Brewer, who caught a pesky 12 passes for 139 yards and a TD. Roach also found Reynolds nine times for 164 yards and two TDs; Roach connected with redshirt senior WR Brandon Luckett three times for 116 yards including an 83-yard touchdown. That 83-yard strike was the second instance where maligned WYO corner Tyler Hall just got abused on an ordinary go route. Hall tried to press him, but whiffed. Roach's 551-yard day is the second straight game a QB has topped 500 yards passing versus Wyoming's "defense."

Once the Vandals got going, there was a sense of helplessness on the WYO sideline. Idaho's first four drives went: INT, FG, FG, INT. But then, after the long TD pass to close out the 1st half, the Vandals were like: TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, FG, TD in the 2nd half. The Vandals never punted. Coupled with the raucous dome atmosphere and Wyoming being intercepted on their first three drives of the 4th quarter, it quickly became a bloodbath. The Vandals scored 31 points in the 4th quarter alone and closed the game on a 38-17 run to stretch out a contest that was actually tied with 3:10 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The timing of the run roughly coincided with WYO starting middle linebacker Cedric Farmer being sidelined with an injury.

Aside from those critical interceptions in the 4th quarter, Wyoming played a decent game on offense. Chandler Garrett put up some pretty big numbers in a very high usage game for him. Garrett completed 35/58 (60%) for 424 yards with four TDs and three INTs (134.1 QB rating). Garrett wasn't sacked. His favorite targets were redshirt sophomore Ricardo Austin (nine catches 78 yards), all-NCAA tight end Alec Stewart (eight catches 144 yards), and freshman flanker Bryce Merchant (four catches 54 yards and two TDs). The Pokes racked up 36 first downs, but it wasn't enough.

The Wyoming run game was effective and unfortunately didn't get fed quite enough; as Idaho's offense hit top gear, the Pokes struggled to keep up. Weldon Adler carried 30 times for 162 yards (5.4 YPC) and a TD, but he still felt underutilized. Adler broke 20+ yard rushes on two separate occasions and seems to be benefitting statistically from Mike Green II's season-ending injury.

As disheartening and unexpected as this game was for the Wyoming fanbase, the Pokes do take a little solace in the fact that Boise State's 24-19 victory over Utah State essentially clinched the Mountain West North Division no matter the outcome of this game.

Bad run for the guys pretending to play defense for Wyoming.

What length are your quarters? Seems you have a ton of plays for both teams in your games.

        10 minute quarters.

Some games definitely have a lot of plays. The 50-45 type games where both teams are up and down the field or when I'm furiously trying to make a comeback, it's pretty normal to have 85-100 plays. In the slow down tempo games like the 27-0 snow game against Air Force, I ran something like 60 plays. In the game right after where I beat Hawai'i 59-52, it was 99 plays. lol

I averaged out my plays last season and I think it was an average in the low 80s. That would rank me in the top 15 of real teams this year. Clemson ran 82.9 plays per game....well here's part of a list I found.

        1. Baylor 88.6
        2. Texas Tech 88.3
        3. Tulsa 88.2
        4. Cal 87.7
        5. Texas 85.5
        6. Houston 85.3
        7. Syracuse 83.8
        8. ECU 83.5
        9. Clemson 82.9
        10. BGSU 81.6
        11. WSU 81.2
        12. So Miss 80.9
        13. Colorado 80.5
        14. Missouri 80.4
        15. SMU 79.7

Real Wyoming ran 74.4 plays per game in 2016. I am always surprised at how many more plays are run in college compared to the NFL (even though it's not that surprising considering the clock stoppage rules).

Brutal loss as the defense has really struggled this year. Have you tried any new schemes or mixing things up to try and get the defense jump started?

That said, this dynasty is a ton of fun and never ceases to amaze me.

            2020g12: BYU @ Wyoming

Junior running back #45 Weldon Adler is hoisted in the air by his big uglies as Wyoming celebrates a rivalrly win on Senior Day.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A regular season of ups and downs closes on a high note for the Wyoming Cowboys. This 52-31 win over BYU marks their second straight victory over the Cougars since they resurfaced in the Mountain West Conference. Although with a 1-8 record in the MWC this year, the Cougs are possibly wishing they had stayed independent.

The game was mostly nip and tuck through the first three quarters. Then Wyoming pulled a page out of Idaho's playbook from last week and laid waste to BYU in the 4th quarter. The Pokes held a tenuous 28-24 lead entering the 4th, but they scored the final 24 points of the game allowing them to coast to an easy win.

Wyoming's run game made their mark and was especially cromulent in the 4th quarter. Weldon Adler scored three of his four rushing TDs in the final 1:30 of the game. That almost doesn't seem possible, but BYU was chucking interceptions deep in their own territory or turning it over on downs which led to multiple quick scores for the Pokes. In a rivalry game, Wyoming wasn't exactly amenable to sitting on the ball. Especially after some of the insane rallies that have transpired this season...ahem...San Jose State. Adler carried 32 times for 194 yards; he's been the bell cow since Mike Green II dislocated his junk. "Junk" being high-level medical terminology for "knee," of course. Oh you thought...?

Wyoming's passing game was also crisp. Chandler Garrett continued a late season run of solid outings and played well on his Senior Day. Will he get drafted? The 6'5" 220 lb 87-ovr QB may have a chance. Garrett completed 30/46 (65%) for 346 yards with three TDs and a lone INT (145.5 QB rating). Garrett spread the ball around to nine different pass catchers, including two TEs and two RBs. He found his security blanket Alec Stewart five times for 82 yards and three scores even though Stewart spent the entire 2nd half on the trainer's table. Stewart is a shoe-in for the Mackey Award again this year and also managed to etch his name into the Wyoming record books--Stewart's final TD catch gave him 17 on the season which tops Ryan Yarborough's previous school record of 16. Yarborough was drafted in 1994 by the New York Jets before hanging around the Packers and Ravens for a few nondescript years and heading to the now-defunct XFL.

So Adler, Garrett, and Stewart all had big days for the Pokes which usually means good happy times, but key players on the defense answered the bell, too. Missing in action for a few weeks now after getting destroyed by Hawai'i and Idaho, both safety Tory McCollum and linebacker Cedric Farmer did work. The pair combined for 15 tackles and three picks. They led the defense into bending, but not breaking. Still far too many big plays--allowing 488 yards of total offense is not exactly 1985 Bears stuff--but some of that was pretty blatant cheat code material, especially the BYU opening drive. You know the kind of drive where a guy breaks a tackle in the backfield on 4th and 1 and then stumble recovers his way to a long TD run as the rest of the defense eats blocks. Or when the offense consistenly gets 14 yards on 3rd and 13. You know what I mean.

On offense, the Cougs were led by pocket passing QB Cedric Tucker. The redshirt junior from San Rafael, CA is only a 76 ovr, but posted decent numbers admixed with unfortunate interceptions: 30/40 (75%) for 386 yards with three TDs and INTs each (165.8 QB rating). His receivers did not drop a single pass all game and redshirt senior tight end Alema Pilimai was the boss of the position group. Pilimai caught seven passes for 143 yards and two TDs. Other Cougs of note were underutilized running back Andy Harris who carried eleven times for 84 yards (7.6 YPC) and middle linebacker John Johnson who made 12 tackles and kept Wyoming from completely steamrolling BYU.

With 12 games played, the Pokes ended up 8-4 (6-3) and will spectate as Boise State clashes with Fresno State in the MWC Championship Game. Word on the street is the Pokes are headed to the Potato Bowl--a site where they lost 44-42 against Boise State just a few weeks prior. Word on the street is Wyoming will face the Chippewas of Central Michigan. That's what the word on the street is anyway.

                  2020g13: CMU @ Wyoming

Wyoming starting left tackle #78 LaBranden Tarver celebrates an Idaho Potato Bowl win with teammates as confetti falls from on high.

BOISE, Idaho -- Wyoming's Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 33-30 (OT) victory was a microcosm of their season. Mostly successful? Check. Gave up a big lead? Check. Got shredded by a mediocre QB? Check. Poor blocking? Yup, that too.

But the Smurf Turf was good to the Pokes as Coach Bohl and the team picked up their 9th win of the year.

The game opened about as well as humanly possible for Wyoming: newly healed from injury, return man Quincy Perryman took the opening kickoff 103 yards to the house. Another of the walking wounded, senior HB Mike Green II, made it 14-0 Wyoming after a seven-yard TD run with 3:33 remaining in the 1st quarter. Green II was feared to be out for the entire season as of just a few weeks ago with a dislocated knee; but he manned up, sacked up, powered through or whatever brospeak best describes him playing hurt.

To make thing appear even rosier for the Pokes, the Chippewas missed three 1st half field goal attempts.

However, Wyoming would not simply roll the Chippewas so easily. Horrid, horrid run blocking set Wyoming's ball control offense back and graduating QB Chandler Garrett was decidedly "meh": 13/26 (50%) for 160 yards (101.6 QB rating). Weldon Adler carried 30 times for 117 yards (3.9 YPC) and a touchdown; the aforementioned Green II had 14 totes ma gotes for 48 yards (3.4 YPC) and two TDs. Chippewa defenders were firing up and into the backfield on a regular basis. Even so, Wyoming held a comfortable 27-10 edge entering the 4th quarter.

Naturally, Central Michigan would rattle off 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to tie it up at 27-27. Quarterback Tony Poljan, a 6'7" monster of a scrambling QB, engineered the comeback. He scrambled in from eight yards out with 7:32 to go to cut the lead to 27-17. Then, redshirt senior dumptruck Kumehnnu Gwilly added a 33-yard TD run on 4th and 1 with 1:42 left. The Chips would finish off the comeback with a 22-yard field goal as time expired.

Obviously Wyoming's offensive output was pathetically pathetic during this Chippewa rally. Getting the ball back with 1:40 left and not being able to simply run out the clock is not anything that Coach Bohl is used to or can tolerate.

As for CMU's offense, they weren't really that good, but they were very opportunistic. The Chips finished 4/4 on 4th down attempts, picked up 80 of their 149 rushing yards after first contact, scored on all five forays into the red zone, and gained 463 yards of offense despite being sacked eight times. Poljan was the epicenter of the Chippewa effort, as scrambling QBs always are in NCAA Football 14, and he ran or passed on 65 of CMU's 83 plays from scrimmage. His final line included 34/43 (79%) passing for 314 yards (140.4 QB rating) and 22 rushes for 70 yards and two TDs.

However badly things were looking for the Pokes in the 4th quarter, their luck rebounded in overtime. They won the toss, deferred, and held CMU to a 27-yard FG. Then, senior Mike Green II scampered in for a walkoff touchdown on 3rd and goal from the 2-yard line.

                  And there was much rejoicing.

The win elevated the 9-4 (6-3) Pokes to just outside the Top 25 (#28) and pushed them up to 4* prestige. Not too shabby for just barely eeking out a win against a directional Michigan school.

Probably unnecessary to make this post, but after posting "SOON" a week ago, I thought it might be worth it.

I turned on my XBox 360 for the first time in about 6 months [don't worry, this isn't turning into a ...and something got messed up!! sob story post], removed a pretty thick layer of dust from my capture card and reminded myself how to use it, went through some update BS with my Microsoft account, discovered that a Windows update deleted one of the main MS Excel fonts I was using for my updates/posts (lol, new font woo!), read back through my entire thread to jog my memory (who is even on my team??!?), and collected all the necessary info to finish posting about the 2020 season and start posting about the 2021 season. Excited to get this show rebooted, rebooting in YEAR 5 of this reboot dynasty. I have some posts lined up for this coming week. I also hope to play my first couple of games this week(end) sometime.

2020 Season Wrap Part 1: Rankings and Stuff

We'll do this end of season stuff in 3 parts--this is part 1. How did everything work out? Who won it all? Which teams are conspicuously absent from the Top 25?

Next up will be offseason part 2 of 3--an awards and stats gala! And then we'll take a closer look at Wyoming a bit more specifically to close out offseason business.

In this alternate universe, Oklahoma appears to win all the big games. Well, sort of. After being the same 'ol Sooners thru 2019, Bob Stoops finally broke through again this year. OU (12-1, 8-1) made relatively easy work of the Gamecocks in the BCS National Championship Game (49-30) to bag the title. The Sooners' only loss was to a 99 ovr Texas squad that finished 9-4.

                              OU's history in this dynasty...

2017: Finished ranked #5 (12-1), lost 38-24 to UCLA in BCS Championship
2018: Finished unranked (6-7), lost 23-17 to Arizona in Texas Bowl
2019: Finished ranked #8 (9-4), lost 23-13 to Tennessee in Sugar Bowl
2020: Finished ranked #1 (12-1), won 49-30 over South Carolina in BCS Championship

Bob Stoops is the winningest active coach in FBS now that a 6-7 season and a Belk Bowl loss has sent Nick Saban into retirement at the ripe old age of 69, heh. Stoops is 228-62 in his 22 years at the helm in Norman.

Meanwhile, 1-loss Notre Dame (11-1) and 1-loss Ohio State (13-1) round out the Top 3 after getting the yearly shaft by the BCS computers. In Notre Dame's case, blame AD Jack Swarbrick for scheduling only 11 games, duh. Do you even join a conference, bro? As for Urban Meyer, "concerned" about being left out might not be strong enough of a word; he is irate about it. The 57-year-old Meyer is currently the 2nd winningest active FBS coach (214-37, 14-3 bowl games, 51-15 vs rivals) and is a stupid 110-14 at Ohio State alone. The Buckeyes' only loss came in Evanston in a 31-30 thriller at unranked Northwestern in late September.

A 4-8 record at the U has Mark Richt out at Miami (new OC at Oklahoma); a 3-9 record brings the James Franklin era at Penn State to a close (takes over as HC for a 1-11 Washington State squad); a 4-8 showing in Stillwater has Mike Gundy out at Okie State (new OC and man at South Carolina).

Joey Jones brings his spread offense and 3-3-5 defense from NC State to Bammer to replace Saban--Been a long way from South Alabama to Bama, Joechelle, Joechelle!; Jeff Tedford is to quarterbacks what queso diablo is to QDoba and Tedford brings his Fresno State ways to Lincoln after Mike Riley called it quits at Nebraska; Mike Yurcich is the new head honcho in Happy Valley.

In other news, Michigan (5-7), Michigan State (5-7), and USC (6-7)...NCAA Football '14 laughs at thee. Jim Harbaugh (UM), Lane Kiffin (lol, MSU), and Clay Helton (USC) are all sitting on an upholstered chair that is somewhat warm to the touch. Wherefore art thou, Mark Dantonio? Oh? The DC for a 6-7 Va Tech team? Hmmm I see. Go green...err...go burnt orange, go maroon?

I'm admittedly catching up. Realized I have to stop making excuses, and make time. After a 5 a.m. to midnight workday yesterday that was emblematic of my life as a whole I said screw this I need to take coffee time in the morning to read dynasties even if it's just for 15 minutes.

I am not caught up yet. I love this dynasty. I have always tried to go the semi-ultra-realistic route in terms of how i talk about the dynasty but my favorites typically include those where there is more candor - for instance the "Coach Bohl leveled up just in time to get the lock pick"..I was laughing.. I still haven't really figured out how to use that, even if I have once or twice it was just like I looked up and it was there. But that's one thing that makes me love this dynasty in addition to your writing style in general. Sorry about Newsome, you should check in on him and see if he was used to his potential. Maybe if you look at his profile constantly, he'll transfer if not used properly? Like the NCAA version of tampering.

An up and down season sort of fell apart at the end there in 2017. I'll pick it up again tomorrow.

                                edit:

Ok so I'm through 2018 now. What a great season. First of all, your presentation went from really good to insane. I really like that you found a nice readable way to present the text without going fully image based, there's a lot to like about having searchable text on the forum. In addition to the fact if the images go bye-bye, you've still got content there.

Your "progression" system is more like a keep your team crappy system, and you're getting crazy unlucky with how many guys are getting near the worst possible regression. I would say regression to that level should be pretty rare. But to each/own of course. I respect the challenge.

I'm sorry to spam you but I have so many questions... Are you telling me the game created a guy named Kawika Ramsour... And you changed his name? Why do you list the original names? I like the transparency, but it seems like it might confuse people that are following. But again... E/O

Idaho... Looking at the pictures it all flooded back, love the Kibbie Dome. and Still love how the players do the safety signal on D when they get a safety haha... (twice). ... Carey Harvey commentary (UNLV) pure gold.

Wow. Ross Johnson *cough cough* Darrin Green. TRK/CAR Juke move combo with a decent arm! Love that he's not so fast that he will just go the distance "TOO" often (but he probably will since the game can be semi-broken by options. Add in the fact he will power truck any DB stupid enough to get in his way or easily juke any linebacker and blammo.... Sensing a Heisman, if the regression Gods don't get him.

What was the biggest factor in Wallace getting 8 pancakes in a game? That's insane. Don't know why but the SDSU game report was particularly nice looking. I had no idea they had a trophy presentation after conf. championships. Never won one yet LOL

All the best, and keep up the dynasty, it's fantasic and a joyful read, I made about 1/10th of the comments that came to mind.
