Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy Part III: Legacy | From Bourbon St. to the Bayou

Love the hiring of Bryce Allen. He was a player I always liked and also a player I felt like we always looked back on and said if only... It is too bad that his playing career didn't go further but I am excited to see where he goes as a head coach. I think the switch back to the Ole Miss playbook and heavy tight end usage will be a welcome one for Mason. If coach can get Mason relying more on those high percentage passes to his backs and tight ends, it should help the efficiency drastically.

With all of Allen's praises and promises, looks like Coach Geezy is going to be sticking to an offensive scheme for several years to come now. Excited to see High get put in his place too this season. That flake..

I love the switch up. Which formations are you looking most forward to?

Thanks man. Not exactly sure which specific detail you're referring to here, but I would say that having depth in your player-characters and giving them personalities certainly helps with the imagination and overall organic feel to the dynasty, as does merely not allowing the past players and events to essentially go away into oblivion, inconsequentially. Things from earlier years of any dynasty should be playing a factor in the present time, just as it happens in real life.

        Thanks, Cheese.

I am very excited to be bringing Bryce Allen into the fold. The hire and the scheme he wants to use both make perfect sense from a storytelling standpoint, with him being so fascinated with tight end usage back when we were recruiting him. My one regret though, and I think I just straight up forgot to do it, is that in my final off-season with Tulane, I had meant to do an update announcing Allen was being hired as a Graduate Assistant. I thought I had done it, and saw I had the update typed up in a previous doc, but I somehow just forgot to post it and ended up needing to revise a bit. Oh well.

Regardless, it is still pretty cool for me personally to have an offensive coordinator that helped me win my last SEC championship, and to have a defensive coordinator in Charles Kelly that helped me win my last national championship, both back in the fold and working together.

You're absolutely right about Allen sticking around for awhile. He's young, and has a sense of loyalty towards Coach Geezy, who stuck with him through thick and thin during his playing career, unlike the wishy-washy Anthony High; that guy just can't sit still in one spot for long apparently and has no problems leaving Coach Geezy hangin'.

I'd say the ones I look forward to the most are Ace-Big Twins, Ace - F Pair Twins, Shotgun Ace Twins-Wk, and also the Shotgun - Wildcat (actually called Wild Rebel in this playbook). Bryce Allen is a big fan of using tight ends, so those first 3 formations I named will be a heavy part of what we do moving forward.

I am very intrigued by the Wild Rebel. I never really used it much outside of some of the early years of the Tulane portion of this dynasty, so I look forward to experimenting with it again. I want to be a lot more creative with RB Scottie Rodgers, and getting him the ball on jet sweeps will be a part of how we do that.

I'd also like to add that there's several nice simple slant route plays within this playbook that did not exist in the Texas A&M playbook, which should lead to some more high percentage throw opportunities for QB Rob Mason. We really need to get his completion percentage significantly higher this upcoming season if we want to get to the level we want to be at.

          Johnson

          ---- ----

Recruiting | 5-star QB Johnson narrows list
          Fri, 28 Jan 2028 10:19:13 -0700
MaxPreps reports that 5-star QB Jace Johnson (6-1, 180, 4.60 40-time, #2 rated QB) has narrowed his list of school choices down to Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU. The Decatur, IL native will visit with LSU officials this upcoming weekend at his home, and as made obvious by his final three school choices, has directly expressed a strong desire to take his talents to the Southeastern Conference.

Johnson, who is the nation's #23 rated prospect overall, would likely be a redshirt candidate in year one with the Tigers. However, with incumbent starting QB Rob Mason entering his final season in Baton Rouge, Johnson could find himself under center for head coach D. Geezy's squad as early as 2029.

          Peterson

Recruiting | 4-star RB Peterson narrows list
          Fri, 28 Jan 2028 10:24:13 -0700
MaxPreps reports that 4-star RB Michael Peterson (6-3, 182, 4.46 40-time, #9 rated RB) has narrowed his list of school choices down to LSU, Michigan St., and Ohio St.. The Gladstone, MI native will visit with LSU officials this upcoming weekend at his home, however it is believed that the Spartans currently are the favorite to land his services due to his expressed desire to remain in close proximity to his hometown.

The speedy running back, who is the nephew of former NFL great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, could possibly compete for immediate playing time in LSU's backfield, as the team reportedly has identified finding a complimentary running back behind last year's freshman sensation Scottie Rodgers (76 ovr, pre-progression) as a major priority.

          Schroeder

          ---- ----

Recruiting | 4-star LB Schroeder narrows list
          Fri, 28 Jan 2028 10:29:13 -0700
MaxPreps reports that 4-star OLB Art Schroeder (6-0, 222, 4.62 40-time, #17 rated QB) has narrowed his list of school choices down to Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M. The Dallas, TX native will visit with LSU officials this upcoming weekend at his home, though it is believed that Texas A&M currently holds the lead for his services.

Should he commit to LSU, Schroeder would be stepping into an absolutely loaded linebacker group, with last year's freshman starters Will McNeal (76 ovr, pre-progression) and J.J. Brooks (74 ovr, pre-progression) set to return next year for defensive coordinator Charles Kelly's 4-2-5 scheme, along with the in-season commitment of Wells Branch, Texas OLB Derek Kerr (6-4, 252 pounds, 4.38 40-time, #10 rated MLB prospect).

          Vaughn

          ---- ----

Recruiting | 4-star WR Vaughn narrows list
          Fri, 28 Jan 2028 10:32:13 -0700
MaxPreps reports that 4-star WR Quinn Vaughn (6-6, 208, 4.44 40-time, #19 rated WR) has narrowed his list of school choices down to Fresno St., LSU, and USC. The Stanton, California native will visit with LSU officials this upcoming weekend at his home, however it is believed that Vaughn much prefers to remain in the state of California for his collegiate career.

The tall and speedy wideout would bolster a Tigers receiving core that is set to lose a whopping 4 of its top 5 receivers after this season to graduation. He'd join in-season LSU commit Christian Smith (5-10, 172 pounds, 4.52 40-time, #6 rated WR) and the speedy sophomore to-be Brady Carter Jr. (74 ovr, pre-progression) at or near the top of the wide receiver pecking order for the Tigers come two seasons from now, in 2029.

I was really stunned to see that a 5-star QB would be considering us. That would be so huge to have a guy like Jace Johnson waiting in the wings behind Rob Mason. And if we don't get him, the alternative of having to play against him versus either Alabama or Arkansas will eat at me if we don't land him. I'd say he's the most important guy on our board right now.

I really like Michael Peterson a lot and think he'd be the perfect compliment to Scottie Rodgers, plus I love the Adrian Peterson nephew story. But I'd have to say that WR Quinn Vaughn has to be the second most important guy on the radar for us right now. We have a bad situation brewing at receiver, with us set to lose so many guys to graduation after this year. To add a 6-6 speed receiver would be huge in solidifying our receiving core for years to come.

Time to turn on the XBOX and get through a couple more weeks of recruiting to see who we can land!

Yeah no kidding...I have been involved in some big games with the Green Wave, but there is definitely a different level of excitement, and honestly "realness" to playing in big games with LSU; it is hard to describe. Tallahassee in week one is going to be amazing, and I can only imagine just how amped up Tiger Stadium is going to be when we face the Wolverines for the first time in school history.

This season cannot get started soon enough! Similar to real life, the anticipation always reaches a new level once that opening week opponent gets determined. The countdown to FSU is now officially underway!

MaxPreps reports that 4-star OLB Art Schroeder (6-0, 222, 4.62 40-time, #17 rated QB) has formally announced that he will sign with LSU on Wednesday's National Signing Day. The Dallas, TX native visited with LSU officials this past weekend at his home, and decided to take his talents to Baton Rouge rather than remaining in his native state, with Texas A&M being his most likely would-be alternative option.

Schroeder will be stepping into an absolutely loaded linebacker group, with last year's freshman starters Will McNeal (76 ovr, pre-progression) and J.J. Schroeder should find a role immediately as key depth and on special teams however, and could pay significant dividends down the road for the Tigers' defense.

Yes our linebacker crew is young, but I feel really good about that position group heading into next season. We are very fast and athletic in that area, and young. I think we are going to take a step back on defense though, with the loss of FS Trey Wade and the number of great defensive linemen that have moved on.

One of the goals we need to accomplish with this new offense is playing better complimentary football, so that our defense isn't on the field as much. Long, sustained drives, good running game, and lots of dinking and dunking to churn out first downs would all really help our defense.

When I study my old Tulane teams from when we were winning national titles, one of the stats that stands out is our Time of Possession numbers. My teams haven't been nearly as dominant in that area as our teams in the past have been, so I plan to focus on correcting that in 2028.

Bummer you couldn't land Jace. Class looks decent, just not very big.
Will be interested in the transition from a QB with mid 80s speed to one with 60 speed.
