    Not Just A Basketball School

I've done a couple different reports here, both of which fizzled out because I just lacked the time to make them as deep and detailed as I wanted to. So this dynasty is more just to document things for my own benefit, instead of trying to tell stories, because I know that I want to get through seasons fairly quickly. With the week-to-week stuff, every game is a 3 hour time commitment vs just an hour.

I'm going to do this report like this: preseason preview of the team and the conference, short game recaps (just a summary, final score and big statlines) every 3 games, then CCG/bowl games will get a preview and probably a more detailed write up. I'll also do a little recruiting feature after 3 games, then another update after 9.

    Sliders And Settings

    - Heisman of course, slightly tweaked version of Jkits' set as I do play with fatigue off.
    - 9 minute quarters
    - Normal coach progression. For whatever reason, hot streaks are much less common with this setting. Credit goes to JoshC for that one, it's legit, I played a season with Vanderbilt before starting this up.

    House Rules

    Gameplay

    - Tuscaloosa's kicking system
    - I edit all Scrambling QBs under a 90 AWR to make them into a Balanced, less cheap sacks where they just run into the LE.
    - Run/Pass D for my coach goes one tick to the left to open up the CPU pass game.
    - I do injury rating edits.
    - I also edit a lot of ratings to make elites really elite, especially on CPU teams. A corner with 95 speed, man and zone, but 79 agility is useless and unrealistic, so that guy's agility will be bumped to 92 or so. Just one example.
    - I will use my coordinators' playbooks as base playbooks. I can add and remove plays as I see fit, but I must maintain the base scheme. Option will be an exception should I ever get a coordinator running it.

    Recruiting/Team Building

    - I may only apply as many recruiting upgrades to my coach as equal to 2x the number of wins that I had in the previous season. A down year will then mean tougher recruiting in the following season. (Stolen from moose141, I really like this)
    - "Kitchen Sink" and "Royal Treatment" may only be upgraded 2 of 3 levels.
    - No cherrypicking unsigned 5 stars. I may recruit anyone at any time who has us in their top 10.
    - Any player that I'm up 1000 or more points on is considered a verbal commit. I can then only spend 50 points a week on him unless my lead dips below 1000.
    - After week 4, I can only add as many guys to the board as my team has prestige stars. Up until, and including week 4, I can modify the board as I see it.
    - Players in pipelines states who are 3* or lower may be scouted one time at 50%. No scouting of 4* or 5* players until they are signed or lost. Then they will be legitimate gems/busts once they are scouted after the fact. Any player may be scouted in the offseason signing period. (again stolen from moose141)
    - No redshirting 5 star or JUCO recruits, and I must make an effort to play 5 star recruits.
    - No redshirting anyone who would make the 2 deep depth chart. (OL, QB are exceptions as those guys don't rotate)
    - I cannot persuade any player projected to go in the first 3 rounds to stay in school.
    - Anyone persuaded to stay, whether transfer or draft must start or see significant reps (#2 back, nickel corner, slot WR etc.)
    - Biggest one is I'm using Kawkeye's Dynamic Progression System. This should keep my team from gaining +20 OVR within 3-4 seasons like what will usually happen in this game.
    - Lastly, no gameplay or coordinator skill trees.

    Scheduling

    - I must schedule a minimum of two Power 5 non-conference opponents, with one of them being ranked, and they will be scheduled in back to back years in a home and home series.

    - I may only schedule one "tune-up" opponent per season.

    - No FCS games.

Anyway, even though this is mostly for my own benefit, hopefully I can entertain some of you guys. I want this to last a while, and I want to get through a lot of seasons. Go Tar Heels!

Season Synopsis: The Tar Heels started 1-5, with QB Bryn Renner missing 3 of the first 4 games with a torn pec. It took Renner and the offense a while to hit their stride after he returned, but a big win over NC State sparked a 5 game win streak, including a 44-41 win over then #10 FSU to make the Tar Heels bowl eligible. Unfortunately, Navy ran all over them in the Independence Bowl, winning 48-27.

2013 North Carolina Tar Heels Football Preview

        Offense

Note: Injury rating edits knock a few points off the overalls, OL/DL are particularly hard hit cause I take them down by 80. Also, not sure if I mentioned, but these are 2013 rosters by rialknight.

Scheme: I will be running the default UNC playbook, which is a spread.

        QB

#2, Bryn Renner - 6'3, 225, r-SR, 4.77 40, 88 OVR: Pocket guy. Good arm, very accurate. Decent top speed but slow to accelerate, unagile. Good senior year could see him drafted late.

#12, Marquise Williams - 6'2, 215, r-SO, 4.58 40, 77 OVR: This guy can run the ball. Good speed, but subpar arm.

#11, Kanler Coker - 6'4, 215, r-FR, 4.88 40, 76 OVR: Strongest arm on the roster. More accurate than Williams, but sometimes struggles reading defenses. Won't play this year, but will battle for the job next year.

#10, Mitchell Trubisky - 6'3, 210, FR, 4.66 40, 74 OVR: Some speed and a fairly strong arm make Trubisky an interesting prospect. He'll redshirt this season.

Position Grade: A-. Renner has a shot at going pro and should have a great year, but there will be a drop off next season.

        HB

#15, A.J. Blue - 6'2, 215, r-SR, 4.51 40, 85 OVR: Blue can run once he gets going, but power is his main strength. He'll attempt to fill Gio Bernard's shoes as the lead back.

#21, Romar Morris - 5'10, 185, r-SO, 4.45 40, 80 OVR: Morris accelerates like a supercar, and is slippery to go along with it. Has a good juke and spin on him.

#8, T.J. Logan - 5'10, 180, FR, 4.39 40, 79 OVR: Logan has the same burst as Morris, but is even faster in the open field. He's not as elusive, but his superior speed makes up for it. Watch out for him on kick returns.

#35, Khris Francis - 5'9, 195, FR, 4.5 40, 72 OVR: He profiles similarly to Blue but without the size. Will redshirt.

Position Grade: B-. Blue is a good back who should be able to do the grunt work while Morris and Logan provide a change of pace. My money's on Logan taking the #2 spot.

        FB

        #39, Connor Gonet - 6'0, 220, r-SO, 4.64 40, 71 OVR: Solid athlete, decent blocker.

Position Grade: C. Gonet is mediocre, not that our spread offense really needs him.

        WR

#14, Quinshad Davis - 6'4, 205, SO, 4.47 40, 81 OVR: Big physical wideout who doesn't need much separation to make a grab. Not a very sharp route runner.

#6, Sean Tapley - 6'1, 185, r-JR, 4.4 40, 81 OVR: The deep threat. Good route runner who struggles in traffic.

#5, T.J. Thorpe - 6'0, 200, r-SO, 4.42 40, 77 OVR: Great acceleration, but doesn't have breakaway speed. Suspect hands and doesn't run routes or change direction as well as you'd expect from someone his size.

#3, Ryan Switzer - 5'10, 175, FR, 4.52 40, 77 OVR: Will likely be the #3 wideout over Thorpe. Polished route runner, very agile. Average speed for a wideout. Slight frame causes a lot of drops in traffic. Good hands otherwise.

#84, Bug Howard - 6'4, 195, FR, 4.49 40, 75 OVR: Howard has size, speed, a 39 inch vertical and a penchant for spectacular grabs. However, he can only really run go routes and curls with much effectiveness. Very raw, definitely a boom or bust player.

#17, Mark McNeill - 6'4, 215, JR, 4.56 40, 74 OVR: Decent top speed but just takes forever to reach it. Solid hands.

        #28, Kendrick Singleton - 6'2, 200, SO, 4.48 40, 70 OVR: Good athlete, bad football player.

        #19, Kedrick Davis - 5'10, 175, r-FR, 4.5 40, 69 OVR: Special teamer.

Position Grade: C+. There is talent here, but there isn't a true #1 guy. Fairly average receiving corps.

        TE

#85, Eric Ebron - 6'4, 245, JR, 4.61 40, 93 OVR: Ebron could be a first round draft pick. He has size, speed, great hands and can block. Expect to see him line up as a wide receiver at times.

        #80, Jack Tabb - 6'3, 240, JR, 4.69 40, 84 OVR: Tabb is like Ebron-lite. Still a good tight end.

#82, Terrance Knox - 6'2, 250, r-FR, 4.82 40, 70 OVR: Knox isn't the kind of athlete you expect from a 6'2 tight end, and he isn't all that strong either. Needs time in order to be a contributor.

Position Grade: A. Ebron is one of the best tight ends in the nation, and Jack Tabb starts for most teams. Knox won't contribute much, but we don't need him this season.

        LT

#77, James Hurst - 6'7, 305, SR, 5.08 40, 92 OVR: Hurst is an elite-level pass blocker and very good in the run game. He has a good first step and is strong enough to handle a power rush.

#76, R.J. Prince - 6'6, 310, FR, 5.01 40, 72 OVR: Prince is athletic, strong, and a decent blocker. He needs experience in a college environment. He will likely redshirt.

#67, John Ferranto - 6'5, 290, r-FR, 5.06 40, 71 OVR: Workout warrior who's an OK blocker, needs to improve his hip mobility.

        LG

        #70, Caleb Peterson - 6'5, 300, r-FR, 5.05 40, 71 OVR: Inexperienced guard who needs about 15 pounds of muscle.

        #79, J.J. Patterson - 6'4, 310, r-FR, 5.11 40, 67 OVR: Much stronger than Peterson, worse blocker.

        #73, Brad Henson - 6'5, 295, FR, 5.02 40, 66 OVR: Redshirt.

        C

        #60, Russell Bodine - 6'4, 310, r-JR, 5.03 40, 84 OVR: Bodine is reliable. He's a well-rounded blocker who has experience. Will lead the line well.

        #65, Lucas Crowley - 6'3, 270, FR, 4.98 40, 70 OVR: Very strong, athletic lineman who isn't a polished blocker. Will redshirt.

#51, Jarrod James - 6'3, 290, r-SO, 5.10 40, 69 OVR: Solid pass blocker, lacks the lateral quickness to be good in the run game.

        RG

#78, Landon Turner - 6'4, 320, r-SO, 5.02 40, 77 OVR: Very athletic for a 320 pounder, good strength and good at both pass and run blocking.

        RT

#71, Jon Heck - 6'6, 300, r-FR, 4.99 40, 77 OVR: Heck hasn't taken any college snaps. That's his only flaw. He's tall, long, athletic, strong, and a good blocker.

        #72, Kiaro Holts - 6'4, 295, r-SO, 5.03 40, 75 OVR: Better run blocker than pass blocker.

        #72, Nick Appel - 6'6, 310, r-JR, 5.11 40, 72 OVR: Decent football player, bad athlete.

Position Grade: C-. James Hurst and Russell Bodine are good starters, but the other spots are shaky. Bryn Renner will need to get the ball out fast this year.

          Defense & Special Teams

          Scheme: 4-2-5

          LE

#93, Tim Jackson - 6'5, 285, SR, 4.78 40, 83 OVR: Jackson isn't great at pass rushing or run stuffing, but is good at both. Will be a disruptor.

#98, Justin Thomason - 6'4, 265, SO, 4.81 40, 73 OVR: Poor tackler. Good first step, decent pass rush moves.

#94, DaJuan Drennon - 6'4, 230, FR, 4.80 40, 68 OVR: Very quick first step, but not polished as a pass rusher. Will redshirt.

          RE

#95, Kareem Martin - 6'6, 265, SR, 4.75 40, 87 OVR: Good pass rusher, good run stopper. Like Jackson on the left side, will disrupt.

#90, Jessie Rogers - 6'4, 260, SO, 4.79 40, 73 OVR: Good power rusher, struggles in the run game.

          #73, Junior Gnonkonde - 6'4, 240, r-FR, 4.77 40, 73 OVR: Mediocre overall, doesn't do anything at an above average level.

          DT

#97, Shawn Underwood - 6'1, 305, JR, 5.12 40, 79 OVR: Powerful tackle who will occupy space in the run game. Lacks the explosion to do much as a pass rusher.

          #74, Devonte Brown - 6'3, 280, JR, 5.07 40, 75 OVR: Decent run stopper.

          #96, Ethan Farmer - 6'3, 295, r-JR, 5.09 40, 75 OVR:
Decent run stopper, should be a bit stronger.

#58, Greg Webb - 6'2, 310, FR, 5.22 40, 72 OVR: Needs to be quicker to play at this level.

Position Grade: B-. There isn't any depth at end, and the D-tackles aren't the greatest.

          LOLB

#42, Shakeel Rashad - 6'2, 245, SO, 4.56 40, 78 OVR: Athletic linebacker who flies around. Good tackler, takes good pursuit angles. Struggles in coverage, struggles to get off blocks.

          #8, Norkeithus Otis - 6'1, 240, JR, 4.57 40, 76 OVR: Athletic, hard hitting run stopper.

          #23, Darius Lipford - 6'3, 245, SR, 4.51 40, 74 OVR: Special teamer.

          MLB

          #9, Travis Hughes - 6'2, 225, JR, 4.53 40, 81 OVR: Very good run stopper who can't cover.

          #47, Dan Mastromatteo - 6'2, 230, r-FR, 4.59 40, 74 OVR: Can stop the run, can't cover.

          #34, Jeff Schoettmer - 6'1, 220, r-SO, 4.56 40, 73 OVR: Fast but undersized.

          ROLB

#55, Tommy Heffernan - 6'1, 215, r-JR, 4.57 40, 79 OVR: Intelligent, fast linebacker who can cover a bit, but at 215 struggles to get off blocks. Good tackler.

          #32, Joe Jackson, 6'2, 210, r-FR, 4.67 40, 68 OVR: Depth player.

          #33, Nathan Staub, 6'2, 240, r-FR, 4.50 40, 67 OVR: Special teamer.

Position Grade: C+. We lack coverage linebackers. Lot of good run stoppers but we're going to struggle containing tight ends.

          CB

#7, Tim Scott - 5'11, 190, JR, 4.40 40, 84 OVR: Fast, good in man and zone. Can tackle well, lacks starting experience and sometimes struggles to change direction.

#24, Terry Shankle - 5'11, 190, r-SR, 4.34 40, 84 OVR: Burner. Like Scott, not the most agile corner. Struggles a bit as a tackler. Better in zone than in man.

#4, Jabari Price - 6'0, 200, SR, 4.30 40, 83 OVR: Price is probably among the 10 or 15 fastest corners in the nation. But he isn't super polished and sometimes uses the wrong techniques. Better in man than zone, and is our best press corner.

#16, Alex Dixon - 6'0, 185, r-SO, 4.46 40, 75 OVR: Not an elite athlete. Good, not great in coverage.

#28, Brian Walker - 5'11, 175, FR, 4.45 40, 73 OVR: Could redshirt. Talented, but needs reps and needs to gain weight.

#43, Desmond Lawrence, 6'1, 175, FR, 4.49 40, 70 OVR: Solid man cover corner who needs time. Also could redshirt.

Position Grade: B. This is an athletic, talented group. Not super polished, but our top 3 is good.

          FS

          #10, Tre Boston - 6'1, 205, SR, 4.44 40, 86 OVR: Well-rounded safety. Can cover and tackle.

          #25, Kameron Jackson - 5'11, 190, r-SO, 4.50 40, 76 OVR: Good zone safety, bad tackler.

          #21, Justin Fieulleteau - 5'11, 175, FR, 4.49 40, 67 OVR: Will redshirt.

          Position Grade:
A-. Tre Boston will take care of business.

          SS

#3, Sam Smiley - 5'11, 185, r-SO, 4.47 40, 77 OVR: Good in coverage, poor tackler. Struggles to shed blocks.

          #27, Darien Rankin - 5'11, 200, r-SO, 4.51 40, 77 OVR: Athletic, hard hitting safety. Decent in coverage.

          #20, Brandon Ellerbe - 6'0, 220, JR, 4.52 40, 73 OVR: Good tackler. Can't shed blocks. Solid in zone.

          #14, Clint Heaven - 6'0, 225, r-FR, 4.50 40, 73 OVR: Solid in coverage, not much of a run stopper.

#26, Dominique Green - 5'11, 185, FR, 4.48 40, 70 OVR: Could see a move to corner next season. Solid speed and good in man coverage.

Position Grade: C. Considering that strong safety is the most important position in a 4-2-5, these guys need to be better. We don't have a true box safety. Rankin will play that role, but he weighs just 200 pounds.

          K

Note: I use a kicking system created by Tuscaloosa that I found on here. This system requires a kicker's accuracy rating to be a 53. So Thomas Moore was an 86 before I lowered his accuracy.

          #18, Thomas Moore - 5'10, 200, JR, 5.19 40, 86 OVR: Good leg, accurate.

          P

          #30, Tommy Hubbard - 5'10, 190, JR, 5.62 40, 81 OVR: Good leg, decent accuracy.

Position Grade: B. We shouldn't have special teams costing us games.

2013 North Carolina Tar Heels Football Schedule

This is a tough schedule. 2 games against top 10 teams to start. #1 FSU is on the schedule later on, and none of these teams are significantly worse than we are. I think we'll go 7-6 with a bowl win.

Will be interesting to see what direction you go with at QB next season. Well your WR core doesn't have a legit #1 star, you got great depth and non are Seniors. Your star is at TE. Always liked Ebon, I have drafted him several times in Fantasy Football waiting for a breakout season, but he just never has had one.

You might consider moving Holts to LG being how he is buried behind a guy 1 year younger then him.

Looks like your going to need to target some pass rush help for next season but Overall looks like you good a couple years to stockpile some future talent at other spots and on Offense. So it could be a good year to just grab the best available players.

Good luck. I am a big Tar Hell Basketball fan, and actually got a chance to meet Julius Peppers along with the whole Carolina Panthers team in San Francisco at the team hotel. when we went to visit and watch a buddy from our hometown play. It was cool kids were asking for our autographs cause to them I guess 6'0 230 lbs you still look like you should play football too.

Yeah QB is gonna be interesting for sure. I'm 3 games in, and I won't spoil the results, but I lost Renner for 4 weeks in the first half of the opener. Williams and Coker have both taken snaps, and all 3 games have been quite close. I actually always really liked Ebron too, thought he'd be a star in the NFL.

I do have a recruit I'm really excited for that I already have a 1500 point lead on in week 4. JUCO guy, but he's a stud. If we land him, he'll likely start barring an insane offseason from another guy, or if he came in and flopped.

Good shout on Holts moving to LG, that's a switch I hadn't really thought about but makes sense. AWR hit would suck, I have a system to re-roll it on position changes but I only use that in the offseason.

We definitely do have a good roster to start with. I did edit a couple guy's ratings, like Russell Bodine was a 75, obviously he's now in the league so I bumped him a good bit to 84, T.J. Logan who ran a 4.37 at the combine had like an 87 speed so I bumped that to a 92. Recruiting isn't too bad either. Probably no 5 stars coming in, but a lot of 4 stars and high 3 stars. Obviously with the progression system, star rating isn't everything though.

That's funny those kids asked for your autograph, guess it makes sense they figured you played for UNC if you're built like that haha.

                Thanks for the comment bro!

Nice house rules there haha, definitely always a key. It's a shame it takes doing that to make dynasty mode a challenge, but it makes it more involved and fun in my opinion! Solid choice of school also, UNC has some unreal uni combinations so you'll definitely have some good looks on the field. I was just flicking through all of their combos yesterday and they have a ton of good looks. It's a shame their navy helmet never made it into the game or they they weren't rocking the argyle on their unis yet, but they still have a great color scheme. Good luck!

Yeah man I was looking at the house rules for the dynasties I like following and a couple of yours I had to take. You always have good realism, now I know why lol. That and whatever sliders you're on.

Uniform wise, I actually don't have all the uniforms. I recently had to get a new Xbox because my old one was making all kinds of funny noises, and I realized that you can't actually buy the uniform packs anymore. Honestly, I prefer the white on blue to the black on blue, only thing that's grinding my gears a bit is how the helmet isn't quite the right shade of Carolina blue. It's subtle, but it's jarring when you look closely. Still absolutely love the color scheme though.

Thanks for checking in my man!

                      2013, G1-4

Working on formatting. I'll try to think of something more visually appealing.

                      @#9 South Carolina - L 38-47

South Carolina ran for 302 on 31 carries... yeah. Starting tailback Mike Davis was responsible for 241 of them, on 17 touches. He had TD runs of 66 and 67 yards. In my defense, this was before I reverted to my old slider set. JKits' new sliders are insane with fatigue off. We actually outgained the Gamecocks overall, but after Bryn Renner went down in the second quarter, we had to rely on Marquise Williams. Stats wise, Williams was actually better, but he threw a huge pick in the 3rd that ultimately sunk us. Renner was ruled out for 4 weeks with a torn pectoral.

                      Statlines

                      UNC

QB Bryn Renner - 14/24, 154 yards, TD

QB Marquise Williams - 16/26, 183 yards, TD, INT, 59 rush yards, TD

                      HB A.J. Blue - 21 carries, 89 yards, 2 TD

TE Eric Ebron - 10 catches, 132 yards, TD

                      South Carolina

                      QB Connor Shaw - 18/32, 171 yards, 3 TD, 61 rush yards

HB Mike Davis - 17 carries, 241 yards, 3 TD, 30 rec yards

WR Damiere Byrd - 3 rec, 64 yards, TD

DE Jadeveon Clowney - 7 tak, TFL, sack

                      @#8 Oregon - L 16-24

So we had to pivot to more of a spread option, run-heavy attack here with Marquise Williams under center. It was kind of effective, but we clearly lacked any sort of big play threat with his mediocre arm and high 4.5 speed. Oregon didn't have any fear and it showed. We went just 6 of 14 on 3rd down as they forced Williams to make tough plays. It culminated in us having a shot to take it to OT at the death. Williams hadn't turned it over all day, but he was pressured on 3rd down in the red zone, tried to make a tough throw on a wheel route and got picked.

Run D was better. We gave up 204 on 36 carries. Not great, not terrible. Oregon played an uptempo game, lots of short passes and zone runs. Heisman hopeful Marcus Mariota completed 17 of his 20 passes for 151 yards, and ran for 118 more with 2 ground scores. I think we win this game with Bryn Renner.

                      Mariota strikes the pose

                      Statlines

                      UNC

QB Marquise Williams - 20/31, 173 yards, INT, 111 rush yards

HB Romar Morris - 16 carries, 76 yards, TD

SS Darien Rankin - 7 tackles, 2 TFL, sack

                      Oregon

                      QB Marcus Mariota - 17/20, 151 yards, 118 rush yards, 2 TD

                      HB De'Anthony Thomas - 14 carries, 76 yards, TD

MLB Rodney Hardrick - 7 tackles, TFL, sack, INT

                      vs ECU - W 31-20

Finally! We win in our first home game of the season, honestly I thought we might lose. So Williams comes out and tosses a pick, terrible overthrow on an out to Ebron out of the slot, pick-6. We go 3 and out, but then we get extremely lucky as an ECU wideout dropped a pass, and Sam Smiley scooped it up just before it hit the turf, taking it back for a pick-6 of our own. ECU came right back with a quick TD drive, then didn't score again until late in the third.

I actually put Kanler Coker in the game to start the second, as Williams was playing terribly. He managed to complete a few passes, but remember, he can't run, and after he tossed a pick on a jump ball to Ryan Switzer, I put Williams back in. ECU ran an Air Raid offense, actually throwing 55 times this game, and it was effective until I caught on to the fact that they literally would not run the football. Stopped stacking the box, and we were just getting stop after stop. Picked Shane Carden 3 times.

We were awful on offense though. We scored with 20 seconds to go in the second quarter after a stroke of luck: Williams threw another INT, this time in the redzone, but guard Landon Turner absolutely rocked the ECU DB on the return, knocking the ball loose for us to fall on. Williams would eventually find the endzone on a zone read to put us up 14-13, as ECU had missed a kick.

3rd quarter was more of the same, we gave up passing it and just ran it at them. Williams and A.J. Blue provided the rushing scores, but Carden found Danny Webster for a huge 51 yard score late in the quarter to make it 28-20. But it came to nothing as we shut them out the rest of the way, we did have a scare as Williams fumbled around our 25, leaving the game injured in the process, but Tre Boston ended up making an endzone INT on the ensuing ECU drive that just about sealed it. Williams was ruled out for 10 weeks after the game, handing Coker the start in week 4.

                      Statlines

                      UNC

QB Marquise Williams - 8/20, 92 yards, 2 INT, 82 rush yards, 2 TD, FUM

QB Kanler Coker - 9/13, 93 yards, INT

                      HB A.J. Blue - 21 carries, 103 yards, TD

TE Eric Ebron - 8 catches, 107 yards

FS Tre Boston - 8 tackles, INT, DEF

SS Sam Smiley - 7 tackles, INT, TD

                      ECU

                      QB Shane Carden - 33/55, 371 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT

WR Danny Webster - 7 catches, 117 yards, 2 TD

SS Chip Thompson - 8 tackles, 2 INT, DEF, TD

                      vs Georgia Tech - L 51-54 OT

Going into this one I knew 2 things about GT: They were going to go crazy running the ball, and their secondary was weak. Both of those things were very true in this insane shootout. Kanler Coker balled out. He just put in his application for next year's starting job. 40 of 58 (we ran 95 plays to the Yellow Jackets' 60 thanks to them just gashing us for huge plays) for a school-record 487 yards with 3 scores and a pick. He should have had 4, but A.J. Blue fumbled at the goal line after a catch. Quinshad Davis recovered, but that won't count for Coker's stats. Also going off: Eric Ebron, lining up at tight end and wide receiver, who caught 16 balls for 251 yards (both school records), and 2 scores. So how did we lose? Georgia Tech must have eaten their Wheaties, because they were relentless, running for 496 yards and 4 scores on 47 attempts, with QB Justin Thomas, FB David Sims, and HB Synjyn Days all going over 100 yards. They combined for 7 runs of 20 yards or more. That along with 2 massive completed passes, a 40 yarder to put GT in field goal range just before the break, and a 41 yard TD to Days on 3rd and medium with 43 seconds to go, was what cost us here. It wasn't consistent domination, but we just folded too many times and paid the price.

We didn't run very well, posting just 120 yards on 37 attempts. Coker more than made up for it with his huge day, and his defining moment came after that aforementioned TD to Days. With 43 seconds left, Coker took the Tar Heels 75 yards downfield in just 4 plays, including throwing a beautiful deep ball to Ebron over the middle on a huge 3rd and long. He would cap the drive with a 3 yard strike to Ryan Switzer to force OT.

Unfortunately, Coker couldn't reproduce the magic in OT. We forced a field goal but failed to capitalize, being held to 2 consecutive field goals of our own before the Yellow Jackets drove into the endzone, with Justin Thomas striking the fatal blow.

TOP: Kanler Coker found a wide open Eric Ebron for a 42 yard score. BOTTOM: Justin Thomas fights his way into the endzone for the game-winning TD

                      Statlines

                      UNC

                      Georgia Tech

HB Synjyn Days - 7 carries, 133 yards, 2 TD, 1 catch, 41 yards, TD

WR David Waller - 4 catches, 98 yards, TD

                      Injuries through week 4

QB Bryn Renner - Torn pectoral, QST

QB Marquise Williams - Abdominal tear, 8 weeks

LE Tim Jackson - Abdominal tear, 2 weeks

                      Thoughts

Well, Kanler Coker has just made a hell of a case to start next year, maybe even this year if Bryn Renner isn't so good. Won't throw for 480 every week, but he made some very very good throws in this one. Of course, we won't be throwing 58 times a game, because we won't be getting 95 offensive snaps a game. Our run game is fairly pedestrian, don't have a star back. Blue if a good workhorse, but ultimately neither the line nor the backs are good enough for us to be better than average on the ground. We need a safety with better makeup speed, I run mainly cover 1 and cover 3, and Tre Boston has been exposed a few times over the top.

1-3 start but I don't think the season is a lost cause. Funnily enough, we're pretty much mirroring real life 2013 UNC, who ended up 7-6 after a 1-5 start. Don't think we'll lose our next 2, but weird how this game can mimic real life. Run D has to be better, although I've been trash against triple option since this game came out haha.

No doubt bro, definitely not too mad at the way we've played so far, run defense excepted. Definitely think we can get to a bowl game, thanks for the comment man.

Always fun seeing the old names from 2013. I think we all knew that the first couple games were going to be tough, and when you said a 6-6 season with a possible bowl win to get to 7, I am sure the loss's you already had were counted in those 3 games and ECU was probably counted as one of the win's so you are on pace to where you thought you would finish.

I am curious with Trubisky. He was only a 1 year starter in real life. Are you trying to stay somewhat with that same concept. I figured with all the early injuries you had you might give him a shot..

Yeah it's cool to see these old names, a few of whom have had their NFL careers come and go already. Definitely a struggle to get bowl eligible man, we are terrible in the trenches. LG is so so weak, RG and RT aren't great either. D-line is mediocre and Tim Jackson is gonna miss a couple games so we're starting a 74 overall left end. Just played Cuse, the game literally came down to 1 play.

As far as Trubisky goes, whether or not he starts will depend on a couple things. One, the progression he has. I'm using a system that will make it possible for players to stagnate and even regress slightly from year to year. You'll see how it works as this dynasty unfolds. Two, the kind of recruits we bring in. NC produces a lot of talent, we have Florida as a pipeline as well I believe, so a lot of chances to recruit top talent. He's very raw, not accurate enough to do a lot of damage unless he gets hot. As of right now, I'd start Kanler Coker over him anyway.
