                    “Hey rook get in here.”

Hearing Coach Gerander’s voice the past few weeks had never been a good thing especially with our recent trouble winning games. But this was different. We had just played our best game of the year. A 5-3 win over Albany. The River Rats are with us at the bottom of the conference, and we needed the game badly so as to gain some momentum before we got a whole week off.

“Seriously now. I don’t have all day.”

Pat hurried into the office hoping for some good news. Maybe he would be getting called up to the first line or even the Rangers. It wasn’t to be

“Hey Pat, great game out there today. Just wanted to let you know you’ll be getting game puck, but try to be a bit more physical and you really need to work on the plus/minus which I understand is very hard to control, especially since we’ve had a rough start.”

“Alright everyone. I think we know who gets game puck. Pat Cosgrove with 4 goals 5 hits and a plus/minus of +2. Brodie you were okay too. No but seriously guys. This is what we needed. Go out and celebrate. Tomorrow you have off then back to work Monday and Tommy, Brodie and Pat are exempt from sprints that day. So lucky you guys.”

                    TWO DAYS LATER…

“Hey rook I need to see you after practice. You and I have a meeting with Schoenfield.”

After two hours of working on a new powerplay line with Tommy Pyatt, Mark Bell, Brian Fahey and Cory Potter, Pat was exhausted and just wanted to go back to his apartment, but he knew he had a meeting with Hartford GM Jim Schoenfield which could potentially set him up with an NHL contract.

“Hey kid, Ken, thanks for coming. After your performance on Saturday, we decided to put you on the first line with Mark and Artem. Now we’ve heard rumors that you and Artie don’t get along to well. Is that true?”

“No sir. We just don’t know each other very well.”

“Well as stipulated by your contract, since you made the first line, the Rangers will be buying out your contract and signing you to a one year two-way deal. This will give you a slight pay raise and if you get called up it’ll go to 330,000 pro-rated of course. You should be excited kid.”

“Thank you sir. I won’t let you guys down.”

“Hopefully not kid but you need to hit the gym with Damien, so get to it.” Coach Gerander said with a chuckle.

                            Only on Saturdays
                            By Jeff Jacobs

It seems as though the Wolfpack can only get up for games that are on a Saturday , recording their second straight win on the weekend. This time they really needed it though and to lose to Albany who may be the only worse team in the Eastern Conference. Yet again Cosgrove had a big game, busting out with 4 goals including shorthanded and powerplay goals. Now that he's been called up to the first line and is now officially a Ranger's prospect hopefully he can get Anisimov going.

The highly touted center has no points through 10 games and has struggled to keep a hold of the puck. Now both of his wingers have started to put it together and it'll be interesting to see whether he does anything over the next ten games.

Hopefully no rivalries will crop up between the highly-rated Anisimov and the not at all rated Cosgrove.

Walking into the bar Pat knew he was asking for trouble. It was only Monday night but the club was packed full of people. Taking the train to New York had seemed like a good idea at the time; now, not so much.

Looking for a place to sit at the bar, he watched as Tommy and Brodie went to work on the ladies, charming them like it was their job. Meanwhile he just sat down and ordered a beer.

Suddenly down the bar he saw someone he recognized. It was a girl he’d seen around campus last year at Cornell. But why was she here? Making his way down the bar to where she was sitting suddenly he felt a hand on his crotch.

“Whoa, what the hell are you doing?” he asked, shocked at such a forward move.

“When I see something I want, I go for it, and I want you!” the sultry woman said looking him up and down.

Pushed against the wall back by the bathrooms by the woman Pat wondered how they had gotten there that fast. As she started kissing him Pat tried not to let things get out of hand and had to hold on to her hands so they didn’t go anywhere they shouldn’t.

Once again Pat felt a woman’s hand on his body but this time he was being pulled away. Much to his surprise it was the blonde girl he had noticed before he had been put in this awkward situation.

“Thanks I owe you one,” Pat said, relieved that the whole thing was over.

“Don’t worry about it. Looked like you were in some trouble there. I couldn’t let her get her claws into.”

“You look familiar. Do I know you from somewhere? Maybe you live in Hartford or something?”

“No sorry, I’m actually from Buffalo. I’m just down here for Fall Break. I’m actually a student at Cornell University.”

“That must be it. I went there last year. I was on the hockey team,” Pat said, now confident that he had an ice-breaker that would be effective. If nothing else they could talk about school.

“Oh you’re that guy who left to play minor-league hockey right?”

                              “That’s the one.”

“Yeah I thought you were different from most hockey guys but I guess not.”

“What? I think you got the wrong impression. Can you at least let me buy you a drink?” Pat asked, desperate to keep the conversation going.

“I guess so considering they weren’t serving me anyway.”

As the night drifted Pat finally did learn her name and when it was time to go her number as well.

“It was nice to meet you Laura. I’m sorry you don’t live closer to Hartford, but if you’re in the area you’ll always have a place to crash.”

“I hope so.” And with that statement came a short but enthusiastic kiss.

“Oh man look at Romeo doing his thing man. Hey maybe he can give us some tips.”

Turning around Pat saw Tommy and Brodie looking drunk and grinning from ear to ear.

“Time to go home fellas. And Laura, it was great meeting you. I’m sorry you won’t be around."
