      Offensive Ineptitude

      by Jeff Jacobs

Well it looks as if the Wolfpack decided to pack it in early tonight. Giving up 3 goals in the 2nd period and 4 in the 3rd was not what the ‘Pack need to get back into the playoff hunt. Currently 12th in the Conference and 6th in the Atlantic Division, Hartford has just had a rough stretch of 9 games in which 4 straight were in overtime including a 4-3 loss against league leader Philadelphia. All of these games came against teams with similar records except for the game against Philadelphia. All of these games were needed points and Hartford managed to pick up 13 out of a possible 20 points.

The real story has been the emergence of Hartford’s 1st line. Brandon Dubinsky centers Mark Bell and Patrick Cosgrove. Cosgrove the youngest of the three at only 19 has been dominant with 11 goals and 16 points in the last nine games since he was sent back down after his brief cameo in New York. Bell and Dubinsky haven’t been dragging the line down at all as each have 10 points in the same stretch. It seems as this line goes, so go the Wolfpack.

This is just one man’s opinion but other than Brodie Dupont’s hot start, which he’s cooled off from, and Dale Weise who has come on lately, no one else on the team as been able to contribute in the offensive zone. Highly touted prospect Artem Anisimov has been a disaster with only 1 assist in 27 games. All of the good teams have balanced scoring, and until the someone other than that first line starts contributing offensively consistently, I do not see playoffs for Hartford.

                  Re: A Different Path (BAP)

After a couple of dates Pat felt he really had a connection with Emily. She was much older than Pat at 25 but that didn’t stop them from having a good time.

She had a very busy schedule as a teacher, as did he with hockey, but they had managed to finally meet when Pat was sober, and both were dry.

Being the gentleman that he was Pat had let Emily dictate where the relationship had gone up to this point, but it was date #5 and Pat felt it was time to make his move. As they came up on her apartment Pat slid in for a goodnight kiss and immediately bumped heads with her as she had attempted the same move.

Laughing at their clumsiness, Emily asked “Do you need some ice for that? I always have an ice pack ready in my freezer.”

Seeing his opportunity, Pat quickly responded “Yeah I feel a little woozy. That ice sounds good.”

“Let’s see that eye. Ooo that looks like its going to be a nice shiner. Do you mind if make it all better?”

“Miss Crouch,” Pat mimicked “I have a booboo. Can you kiss it and make it better?”

“Well you’ve been such a good boy. I think just this once I can make an exception…”

                          Re: A Different Path (BAP)

“Pat can you come here for a sec?” Coach Ken did not look happy, and who would. The Wolfpack had just slipped below .500 again and against our biggest rivals.

“Look J.J. seems to think you’ve been slipping a little production-wise. We need you to improve statistically before you have a chance to get called up to the Rangers. Until you prove you can handle it you’ll be on the second line with Artie and Brodie.”

Now so far Pat had played good soldier even after the team’s slow start and the lack of production other than him. This time he could not take it.

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I’m second in the AHL in points and first in goals. What more do you want? I can’t score every game. Sorry about that. Maybe you should demote Artie or Andreas. They have less points total than I do assists. I’m busting my butt trying to make this team better and help them win. I’ve done everything you’ve asked and more. What’s my reward? A cameo in New York where I proved I was better than the entire 4th line up there and they sent me back down. Now I’ve scored 19 points in the last 12 games and you send me to the second line? Are you f*cking kidding me?”

“Hey kid, I’m the coach not you. You’re not making these decisions. Maybe you’ll get Artie and Brodie going. Did you think of that? Get out of my office you little sh*t.”

Wow, Pat thought Coach really flipped. I wonder if he was forced into the decision. He’s usually the calm and rational one, not angry like J.J.

After showering Pat walked out of the locker room and was surprised to find Emily waiting for him.

“Hey there cutie. Sorry you didn’t score but I thought you played great.”

“Thanks,” Pat said. Things had been going great since he had slept over earlier that week. He had even convinced her to come to a game. Now they were going have a late dinner.

“And maybe if you play your cards right I’ll invite you in for dessert after words.” Emily teased.

Yeah, Pat thought that’s what I need.
