Since Pat had been demoted he had yet another outburst of points. With Artie have 5 points in the last 5 games it was clear that Pat was force to be reckoned with.

Just as Pat was leaving with Brodie Tommy Brandon and their new group member Artie, Pat heard a voice calling for him in the locker room.

“Well boys looks like I’m getting back together with Brandon. Did you miss me big guy?”

As Pat walked back into the locker room he saw Ken Gerander standing there.

“Preemptively Coach I’d like to say I’m sorry I was such *ss an two weeks ago. I was really upset. My bad.”

“Don’t worry about it son. You’ve proven your point. You deserve to be on the first line.”

“Thanks Coach.” Pat had been worried that Coach Gerander would hold a grudge against him, but again he realized that Coach was as mellow as they came. He had just shrugged it off and not let it affect his decision.

Walking out into Manitoba, Pat was excited about the prospect of legal drinking, but knew that it was a bad idea and that Dubie would stop them from doing it anyway.

“Hey nice goal man.” Brandon said. “From the circle in our zone too. Sanford has got to be embarrassed man. A clapper far side then that? He looked off those last 5 minutes.”

“Yeah, I just got lucky that I had the puck on my stick when I did.”

As the 5 friends walked back to their hotel, they sucked in the night air and knew that they were going somewhere, each down a different path.

Tied for 9th in the Eastern Conference, Hartford had had an up and down season thus far. Pat’s on the other hand had been exciting with new high’s coming with every game. Walking into the locker room before practice he looked around with a contented grin on his face. He still had a burning desire to get to the NHL but if he had to stay her for his entire career and play hockey, well then that wouldn’t be so bad.

Who was he kidding? As much as he enjoyed playing with Brandon and Mark Bell, he needed to get to New York and show what he was capable of.

Sitting down in between Corey Potter and Brodie, Pat could feel the tension in the locker room was high. Even though it was only the AHL, making the playoffs was big deal, and though it was only January everyone was feeling the pressure to perform.

Just outside of a playoff spot and tomorrow’s game against Bridgeport would be important. Both had 19 wins and were tied for 9th 2 points out behind 4 teams and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 1 point behind them. Bridgeport held the advantage with 2 games in hand, but Hartford held the edge in the season series 3-1-1 with one victory coming in overtime.

To cut the tension, Pat let one rip that got the whole team laughing even the normally uptight captain Mark Bell.

“I hope you’re not doing that in front of Emily,” Tommy Pyatt chirped from across the locker room.

“Yeah man, she’ll give you detention if you do that again,” Brodie said giving him a light punch in the arm.

Normally not outspoken, but today even Captain Bell chimed in “I heard you caught yourself a cougar Cosgrove. I hope we don’t have to have the trainers work overtime dressing your claws wounds.”

“Hey,” Pat said, a little defensive of his girlfriend, “she’s only 25. That’s not that old.”

“Maybe for me, but you can barely take her to an R-rated movie.” Bell was on fire today.

“I saw them go in her place last night,” Artie said. Now it was getting out of hand if even Artie could get a jab in.

“Hey look,” Pat said, “at least I’m getting some which the same cannot be said for some of you guys,” as he looked at Brodie and Tommy, and with that skated onto the ice.
