Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Isles Report: Shanahan Signs, Tavares Shines
Uniondale (AP) -- It's official: The Isles and 40-year-old future hall-of-famer Brendan Shanahan have reached an agreement. Shanahan has agreed to a 1 year 1.475M deal to join the Islanders second line. The victim of Shanahan's signing is rookie Rob Schremp who has appeared in all 6 games this season, but has as of yet registered a point. The move was strictly due to the Islanders not wanting to risk losing Hillen or Tambellini through waivers as Schremp was the only one they were considering sending down that is on a 2-way contract.
Shanahan will be uniform and on the second line in the Isles upcoming matchup with the 'Canes. Weight has yet to return, so he will be joining with Bailey centering and Comeau shifting over to the left wing. He will also join the second power play unit on the right wing, moving Park over to center, and Bailey to left wing.
Tavares, Isles Young Top Line Impressing
John Tavares has certainly wasted no time in proving exactly what all that hype was about. The rookie centerman has already formed great chemistry with his "elder" linemates in Matt Moulson and Kyle Okposo, and because of that the trio have amassed 23 points between them. Tavares has racked up 4 goals and 4 assists, including a game winner.
It's Matt Moulson, however, who seems to be intent on stealing the spotlight. Moulson signed with the Islanders after spending a majority of his professional career with the AHL affiliate of the L.A. Kings. He racked up a total of 25, 28, and 21 goals in three seasons with Manchester, but despite that was unable to secure a roster spot on the Kings.
Now with the Islanders in his first extended stay in the NHL Moulson finds himself on a top forward line and is playing like exactly that. He has turned in 9 points thus far including 4 goals and 5 assists and is looking to be one of the steals of the off-season.
Goaltending: Sometimes Too Much Isn't Enough
Sometimes when a team has too much goaltending, it's a good problem to have. Think of Osgood and Hasek, Fernandez and Thomas, Lemelin and Moog. In the Islanders case, a duo of veterans have proven to be more of a "pick your poison" duo than a good problem to have. Both Biron and Roloson have struggled thus far, but fortunately for them have been picked up by the Islanders offense.
It seems the two goaltenders fail to realize the importance of their play in the month of October with DiPietro set to return in November. It's very likely that whoever performs the best will remain with the Islanders, while the other will be sent through waivers. So in a competition to possibly display their talents to another interested team, or to keep their spot on the Islanders, neither has risen to the occasion to prove their worth.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Isles Report: Isles Acquire Joe Corvo, Weight and DiPietro Return
Uniondale (AP)
Islanders Acquire Joseph Corvo
The Islanders have traded RW Trent Hunter and LW Jesse Joensuu to Carolina for D Joseph Corvo. The Islanders were actively shopping around for a puck moving veteran offensive defenseman to help give the Islanders a little extra punch from the blue line. With the acquisition, Freddy Meyer was scratched to make room for Corvo on the second pairing with fellow veteran Brendan Witt. Gervais was moved to the top pairing with Streit, and Martinek was dropped to the 3rd pairing with Andy Sutton.
Corvo will serve as the right point man on the second power play unit.
Weight and DiPietro activated, Tambellini Scratched, Schremp Recalled
Doug Weight and Rick DiPietro have been cleared to return to play and will both be in the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Canadiens. Weight has missed all but one period of the season thus far with a broken hand. DiPietro missed the first few weeks of the season finishing up his recovery from multiple offseason knee surgeries. He had been practicing for a majority of the month of October and was finally cleared to return to action Tuesday night.
With the departure of Trent Hunter, Rob Schremp was called back up to join the Isles and will regain his spot on the second line with Doug Weight and Brendan Shanahan. Blake Comeau has been moved to the 3rd line right wing in Trent Hunter's vacated spot. Both Bailey and Nielsen have moved down a line each at center to 3rd and 4th, while Park has shifted back to right wing on the checking line.
The power play units shake out as following:
PP1:
Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Streit-Shanahan
PP2:
Bailey-Park-Comeau
Weight-Corvo
Biron Claimed on Waivers
The Boston Bruins claimed Biron off waivers. Biron's short stay with the Islanders ends with him posting a 3.78 GAA in 4 starts. Good riddance.Comment

Looking good, Lan.
Just a heads up - the reason your scoring summary logos are off is becuase when there are less than 4 digits in the time (0:00 instead of 00:00) I use a space in front of the number to keep the formatting correct.

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
DiPietro, Tavares Lead Isles Past Rangers
Note: Played this game this morning, but was too tired to do the box score before I went to bed so I saved it and went off. There's no way of checking the box score so I'm doing this article instead.
Uniondale, NY (AP) -- It doesn't really take much to explain why the Rangers-Isles have a rivalry. You don't even have to look past the team's names really to get that much. The two Atlantic division foes squared off today at the Nassau Coliseum in the first of several meetings on the season, and it was the young Islanders team that took the Rangers to school in a 4-1 victory led by rookie John Tavares. Tavares was a force in his introduction to the rivalry, netting the first two goals of the game, his 7th, and 8th of the young season, the second of which proved to be the eventual game winner.
Rick DiPietro, who struggled initially in his return against the Canadiens on Monday night, made his home return tonight to thunderous applause from the home crowd. At the beginning of the evening they were merely applauding his return, while by the end of the game it was his 1st star effort that was drawing the appreciation of the crowd. DiPietro was masterful, turning away 24 out of 25 shots in the victory.
Also adding goals were Frans Nielsen, who picked up his 5th, and Doug Weight, his 1st. Weight added an assist for his first two points of the season since returning from injury. Rookie Rob Schremp also tallied his first point on the season, picking up an assist.
The Islanders improved to 6-5-0 with the victory, while the Rangers slipped to 7-6-0. The Isles will travel to Washington for a matchup against the 6-4-1 Washington Capitals on Friday night, the first of back-to-back games with the Isles traveling back home to face the Sabres on Saturday. The Caps defeated the Isles last weekend on the strength of two Alex Ovechkin goals.
Dwayne Roloson is expected to get the call in net for the Capitals game. DiPietro will return to the crease against the Sabres.Comment
