Isles Report: Line Shuffle, Waiver Claim, and Trade Rumors

    Uniondale (AP)

    Line Changes

It quickly became apparent that the Islanders would be better off with Schremp on the wing as opposed to center. That being in mind, the Isles have moved Park up to the centerman of the Schremp-Park-Comeau line. Jeff Tambellini will move up to the second unit on the left wing with Weight and Shanahan, while Bergenheim will take over Park's spot on the checking line.

Also, moving into the lineup is defenseman Jack Hillen who will replace Andy Sutton and be paired with Martinek. Sutton will be a healthy scratch for the time being, and is expected to be offered around or put through waivers.

    Erik Ersberg

The Islanders claimed Kings backup goaltender Erik Ersberg off waivers and assigned him to the Sound Tigers. The 27-year-old is talented, but very inconsistent. He got off to an awful start to the season in LA and was waived in favor of Jonathan Bernier after going 0-3 with a 4.69 GAA. He's not expected to make much of an impact on the Islanders roster, but a decent guy to have around in the case of an injury.

    Trade Rumors

Rumor has it that the Islanders have been actively scouting for a cheap solution at center due to the Bailey injury, but have as of yet been able to reach an agreement despite talking with several teams.

There have also been reports of the Islanders looking into an ambitious deal involving the Thrashers and Ilya Kovalchuk, who is on the final year of a contract. The Islanders certainly have the pieces to acquire Kovalchuk, but whether they want to make the move remains up in the air. One would imagine that GM Garth Snow would have to be absolutely certain that Kovalchuk would be willing to sign a long term extension before making such a deal. Players rumored to be involved in the deal include Comeau, Schremp, Tambellini, Kohn, and Witt. The Islanders are not open to trading Bailey or anyone currently on the top line, as well as Bruno Gervais.

                Isles Drop 4th Straight

The Isles continued their struggles on their current road trip falling to 0-3-1 following a 3-2 loss at the TD Bank Garden in Boston. Tuukka Rask turned away 34 out of 36 Islanders attempts, and Patrice Bergeron turned in the game winning goal in the Bruins victory.

The Bruins opened the scoring 8:44 in to the 1st period on a Michael Ryder goal. John Tavares answered with just over a minute to go in the period for his 13th of the season. Moulson and Witt assisted. The Bruins wasted no time taking the lead back as Blake Wheeler netted a goal with just 22 seconds later to give the Bruins a 2-1 leading into the locker room. Islanders captain Doug Weight picked up his 2nd goal of the season on the power play 13:08 into the 2nd, unassisted.

The Bruins GWG came on a perfect screen set by Patrice Bergeron off a Ference point shot. Bergeron positioned himself directly in front of DiPietro, completely shielding him from any chance of seeing the deflected point shot. The goal with 2 seconds left in the 2nd period was all the B's needed as Tuukka Rask kept the Isles off the board the remainder of the way. Rick DiPietro saved 25 out of 28 shots in the loss.

The Isles get a much needed 3 days off before back to back games with the Wild and Blues. Dwayne Roloson is expected to get the call in net in the first of the back-to-back.

                  Isles Get Their Man

Uniondale (AP) - It took a while, but the Isles and Thrashers finally were able to come to an agreement today in regards to superstar Ilya Kovalchuk. The Thrashers have agreed to send Kovalchuk, and 20-year-old centerman Angelo Esposito to the Islanders in exchange for Rob Schremp, Blake Comeau, Nate Thompson, and the Isles' 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks in the upcoming draft.

GM Garth Snow seems to be convinced that the Islanders are ready to compete this year as his last couple of moves acquiring veterans Joe Corvo and Brendan Shanahan, and now the acquisition of Ilya Kovalchuk seems to have put the youth movement on the backburner. Granted, at 26-years-old Kovalchuk is no old man himself.

This trade will be one that will not have a clear winner until years down the road as neither Comeau or Schremp have reached their potential, nor does anyone know who the Thrashers will draft, and what they accomplish as well. Provided Kovalchuk does not tank, it's safe to say there's going to be a lot of talk about this for years to come, either painting Snow as a genius, or a complete idiot.

We all know what Kovalchuk brings to the table, so let's discuss Angelo Eposito. Eposito is a promising young playmaking center who brings some much needed speed to the Islanders lineup and is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd line center. If he can pan out, the Islanders hav effectively shored up their center corps for the future between Tavares, Bailey, Esposito, and Nielsen. Esposito will join the Islanders for now, but will likely be sent down to Bridgeport once Bailey returns from his injury.

As for the lines, the Islanders coaching staff has made it clear that the Tavares line will not be broken up. Accordingly, Kovalchuk will be joining the Weight line with Shanahan, and will man the point with Mark Streit on the 1st power play unit. Tambellini and Bergenheim will hook up with Esposito on the 3rd line, and Richard Park will return to his checking line duties.

DiPietro Records 1st Shutout, Isles Roll 4-0

Toronto (AP) -- The Islanders continued on their hot streak since acquiring Ilya Kovalchuk, downing the Maple Leafs in a 4-0 shut out.

John Tavares has made a statement in the past two games that just because Kovalchuk has been around longer, and was the marquee acqusition, that he is still just as big of a force as the veteran. The rookie has turned in 7 points in the last 2 games, including 1 goal and 3 assists in tonight's victory, having a say in all 4 of the Islanders goals. Kovalchuk turned in 2 assists on the evening.

The Islanders top line has benefitted tremendously from the step-up in Tavares' play as Moulson turned in 3 more points as well tonight, 2 goals and 1 assist, while Okposo added his 3rd goal in the past two games.

Not to be overlooked in the Isles rout, is the goaltending of Rick DiPietro. DiPietro struggled a bit during the Isles recent road losing streak, but has returned to form over the past two games with a shutout tonight turning away 25 shots, and the 32 save 1 goal performance against the Blues. DiPietro attributes this as "shaking off the rust".

Tavares' 4 point performance brings his point total to 30 on the season with 14 goals and 16 assists. Moulson's 2 goals brings him to 12 on the season, and 26 points total. Okposo's goal was his 8th of the year.

The Islanders improved to 14-9-1 with the victory. They will now finally return home for two home games, the first against the 12-8-1 Philadelphia Flyers, followed by the 11-11-2 Pittsburgh Penguins. They will then be back on the road for 5 more games with stops at New Jersey, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, and Toronto.
