Flyers Put an End to Isles Streak
Uniondale (AP) - After winning their last 3 games by a combined score of 13-2, it was time for the Islanders to have the table turned on them, as Ray Emery and the Flyers came into town and handed the Isles a 2-1 loss. Emery came up huge for the Flyers turning away 32 out of 33 shots, with the lone goal coming on a Richard Park penalty shot.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead early with Mika Pyorala netting the first goal 5:37 into the 1st period, assisted by Pronger and Richards. Jeff Carter would follow 8 minutes later on the power play. That would be all the offense the Flyers would get, and all they would need it turns out. DiPietro stood tall the remainder of the game, but the Flyers did only manage to scratch out 17 shots.
The Islanders struggles in the faceoff circle continue to plague them, as the Flyers managed to outdraw them 27 to 9.
With the loss, the Islanders fall to 14-10-1, while the Flyers improve to 13-8-1. The Islanders remain home for their next matchup against the 12-11-2 Pittsburgh Penguins, followed by a road game the next day against the Devils. DiPietro will be in net for the first game, while Roloson will handle the duties in New Jersey.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Isles Blow 4-0 Lead, Lose 5-4 in OT
New Jersey (AP) -- In what had to be one of the more monumental collapses in franchise history, the Isles managed to blow a 4-0 lead that they picked up in the 1st period tonight on the road against New Jersey. Richard Park, Sean Bergenheim, Matt Moulson, and Brendan Shanahan all turned in a goal in the loss, and all within an 8 minute span in the opening period. It was their, 4th, 2nd, 13th, and 6th goals of the season respectively. Nielsen, Hillen, Tambellini, Okposo, Tavares, and Bergenheim each picked up an assist, while Esposito tallied 2.
The Devils pulled the future hall of famer Brodeur after he allowed his 5th goal on just 11 shots in the period. It was Yann Danis who turned in an impressive performance for the Devils turning away all 23 shots that he faced in the remainder of the game, keeping the Devils in a remote chance of winning. And the Devils did take full advantage of that.
As quickly as the Isles got out to a 4 goal advantage in the 1st, the Devils picked up 3 of their own in a rather quick 7 minute succession with Langenbrunner, Martin, and Bergfors all picking up goals, with Langenbrunner's being a shorthanded tally. Travis Zajac would tie the game up at 4-4 13:54 into the 3rd period. Their GWG came in OT from the stick of long time veteran Jamie Langenbrunner, his second of the game.
The Isles come away with just 1 point from what looked like a sure victory. They fall to 15-10-2 on the season, while the Devils improve to 16-8-0. The Isles have the next four days off before returning to action on December 3rd in Atlanta, the second of a 5 game road trip with further stops at Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, and Toronto.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Comeback Nets Isles Point, but SO Loss
Atlanta (AP) -- The Islanders managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit after two periods, but were unable to capitalize on power player opportunities throughout the course of the game, including OT, as they fell the Thrashers in a shootout loss. Both goaltenders turned in impressive performances, as Lehtonen turned away 37 out of 39 shots, while Dwayne Roloson stopped 28 out of 30.
Atlanta got on the board first in the first period on a Colby Armstrong unassisted goal 10 minutes in. The Isles got caught in a bit of a sloppy line change following a power play and Armstrong was able to beat Roloson with a smooth wrister from the slot. The Thrashers would take a 2-0 lead in the second period when rookie Evander Kane banged home a rebound with just 1 second left in the 2nd period to really demoralize the Isles who were hoping to take it into the 3rd period down just one.
The Isles, however, would not lay down. Matt Moulson picked up a power play goal 4:46 in to the third period, his 15th goal of the season on a brilliant forechecking play singlehandedly stripping the defender and beating Lehtonen. It was the Isles only power play goal on 7 opportunities as their power play unit continues to be largely ineffective. Jeff Tambellini would tie the game up 13:40 into the 3rd period, cleaning up a rebound left off the shot by Sean Bergenehim. Jack Hillen picked up the secondary assist.
Thrashers rookie Evander Kane proved to be the hero of the day for the Thrashers notching the lone shootout goal. The Thrashers victory improves them to 9-14-2 on the season, while the Islanders fall to 15-10-3. The Islanders head off the third game of a five game road trip to Tampa Bay to take on the 8-17-2 Lightning.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Gagne's Hat Trick, Emery's Shutout Lead Flyers to 3-0 Win
Philadelphia (AP) - This one turned out to be quite the two man game as Simon Gagne and Ray Emery single(double?)handedly dished out a 3-0 defeat to the Islanders. Simon Gagne's exceptional speed and shot were on display tonight on two of his three goals as he found himself on the breakaway, completely leaving the Isles defenders hopeless and making DiPietro lose his jockstrap in net. The 3rd goal was a rebound goal.
Ray Emery turned away all 28 of the Islanders shots, including a handful of rather acrobatic saves. In doing so he completely demoralized the Isles offense into thinking he was unbeatable. Emery has pretty much had the Isles number all season as he allowed just one goal in an earlier 2-1 victory in Uniondale.
The Isles set off immediately after the game to Toronto where they will face the 16-11-2 Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow night. The loss tonight dropped the Islanders to 16-11-3 and 7th in the eastern conference. Dwayne Roloson (5-4-2 2.92 GAA) will be in net for the Islanders giving DiPietro the night off on the second night of the back to back.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Damn Streit! D-Man's 2 Goals Lead Isles to OT Win
Toronto (AP) - The Islanders and Maple Leafs met tonight in a matchup that proved to be a true test to the character of this Islanders squad. The Isles were faced with a daunting task, trailing 3-0 heading into the 3rd period and very well could have given up and gone on home with nothing to show. However, that would be the exact opposite of what happened, as the Isles made a spirited comeback, finally winning in overtime 5-4.
Things got off to a really disconcerting start for the Isles as the Leafs opened the scoring 7 minutes into the first period, short handed, off the stick of a non-goal scorer in Colton Orr of all people, his second goal of the season. Phil Kessel would net his first of two goals 10 minutes later on a beautiful shot from the right face off dot to put the Leafs up 2-0.
Matt Stajan added the Leafs' 3rd goal 13:48 into the 2nd period on a breakaway after picking off an all-advised D-to-D pass from Brendan Witt to Joe Corvo, scoring on the breakaway.
The Isles would come storming back in the 3rd, scoring two goals in less than a minute. John Tavares picked up his 16th of the season 8:16 into the 3rd, unassisted after a brilliant piece of forechecking to make it 3-1. Ilya Kovalchuk would beat Toskala cleanly glove side from the slot 29 seconds later for his 14th of the season, assisted by Doug Weight and Brendan Witt.
The Leafs tried to put the final nail in the coffin as Phil Kessel deflected in a Francois Beauchemin point shot on the power play to push the score to 4-2 with under 5 minutes to play in regulation. Islanders rookie Angelo Esposito and the Isles caught what turned out to be a really lucky break on the power play with 1:45 to go as a Ilya Kovalchuk wrister went sailing wide of the net to the left, but the bounce off the end board would go right to the stick of the rookie Esposito who put it home for his 2nd career goal shrinking the lead to 4-3. Mark Streit would see to it that the Isles opportunity to force OT would not go to waste on the very next shift, picking up his 5th goal of the season using a beautiful screen from Frans Nielsen to beat Toskala cleanly from the point to make it 4-4.
Streit was not done there either. With just over 1 minute remaining in overtime Streit one-timed the game winner from the high slot on a feed from Matt Moulson to complete the come back.
Neither goaltender turned in a strong performance tonight (obviously) as Roloson saved just 21 shots on 25 attempts for the Leafs, while Toskala turned away 30 of 35.
With the win, the Islanders improve to 17-11-3, while the Leafs fall to 16-11-3. The Islanders long road stretch has now come to an end as well. They will be back in action in 3 days against the 13-14-2 Boston Bruins, followed by a matchup with the Florida Panthers, before a home and home on back to back nights with the New York Rangers.Comment

Re: The 'Next One' - Lan's New York Islanders
Josh Bailey to Return Against Boston
Uniondale (AP) - Islanders centerman Josh Bailey, who has missed the last 14 games has been cleared by the Islanders staff to return to play and will rejoin the team on the ice against the Boston Bruins tonight. The 20-year-old second year player had recorded 7 goals and 4 assists in 17 games prior to breaking his hand, and is a welcome addition back to the lineup.
With Bailey coming back, Angelo Esposito has been sent down to Bridgeport, almost strictly due to necessity since he's one of the few players with a 2-way contract to support the move.
The lines have also been changed up a bit with the move, as Bailey will join Kovalchuk on the second line, with winger Sean Bergenheim. Doug Weight and Brendan Shanahan will drop down to the third line with Jeff Tambellini. The Isles were looking to get a bit more speed and endurance on the second line to allow for more ice time. Weight and Shanahan will be reverted to more of a natural role for them, that is they will get their ice time in 5 on 5 situations, but will be major factors on the power play units.Comment
