Bailey Returns with a Hatty, Isles Roll 6-3

Uniondale (AP) - Josh Bailey felt like making up for lost time. The second year man missed over a month with a broken hand and returned tonight with the best performance of his young career turning in a hat trick on 5 shots for his 8th, 9th, and 10th goals as the Isles rolled to a 6-3 victory. Richard Park chipped in 2 goals of his own, also a rarity, for his 5th and 6th goals of the season, while Matt Moulson added his 16th of the season in the victory. 9 different Islanders picked up 1 assist, while Corvo picked up 2.

The Islanders had Tim Thomas on his heels all game long letting 41 shots total rip, with the benefit of 9 power plays, converting on 3 of them. The Bruins managed only 22 shots, but did score 3 times as Rick DiPietro and the Islanders goaltending once again looked suspect. Bergeron, Kobasew, and Savard were the goal scorers for the Bruins.

The Islanders improve to 18-11-3 with the victory. They will remain at home to face the 18-8-6 Florida Panthers.

Red Hot Isles Win 5th Straight

Uniondale (AP) - It hasn't been pretty for fans of good goaltending as of late, but the Islanders picked up their 5th win in a row to improve to 21-11-3 behind a five goal performance from the offense. It was an old fashioned shoot out in regulation as the Isles outscored the Rangers 5-4 total.

It was a tale of two periods for the first two periods. The Rangers got off to a hot start scoring 2 goals on their first 6 shots. Vaclav Prospal scored just 2 minutes into the first period. George Parros followed up 10 minutes later to give the Rangers an early 2-0 road lead. Both goals were assisted by Higgins, and the former also assisted by Kotalik. The Islanders quickly tied things up in the 2nd period, with Sean Bergenheim netting an unassisted goal at 2:34, and the checking line got in on the action with Jon Sim scoring just his 2nd goal of the season 2 minutes later to make it 2-2.

The Islanders would come out just as strong in the third period, as Matt Moulson scored from the slot beating Lundvist blocker side high just 1 minute into the period, assisted by Kyle Okposo. The Islanders would extend that lead to 4-2 less than a minute later on a slap shot goal by Joe Corvo, also only his second of the season. As had been the case for most of the game, the answering goals by the Rangers came in a flurry. Chris Drury netted a power play goal 2 minutes after Corvo's goal at the 3:44 mark to make it 4-3. Higgins picked up assist #3 of the night on that goal. Just over a minute later Brandon Dubinsky would score a shorthanded goal to tie things back up at 4-4.

The Islanders had one final answer for the Rangers tonight, as the wily old veteran Brendan Shanahan came through huge on the power play, firing home a wrister from the high slot beating Lundvist with 7 minutes to play in the game to make it 5-4. The lead would be held as DiPietro managed to keep the puck out of the net for the remainder of the game.

The Islanders got off a total of 34 shots on Lundvist, and were 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Rangers got off 27 shots, and were also 1 for 3 on the power play.

The Isles have 3 games remaining on the homestand. They will face the 16-16-3 Canadiens next.

Thank You, May I Have Another? (Hat Trick for Kovie)

Uniondale (AP) - Sometimes all it takes to keep a streak going is one superstar performance. And that, is exactly what the Islanders got tonight from the scoring white hot Ilya Kovalchuk, who nets his second hat trick in the last four games, and 7th goal overall in that span as the Isles hang on to defeat the Canadiens at the Coliseum 4-3.

Andrei Kostitsyn opened the scoring for the Canadiens jumping on a breakaway opportunity caused by a bad line change from the Islanders. The Isles had already begun to switch on a dump in attempt that was controlled by an Islanders forechecker. Their pass attempt to the point missed and Kostitsyn came up on the loose puck and took off on the breakaway beating the helpless Roloson to make it 1-0. However, the lead would not make it out of the first period as Kovalchuk picked up his first goal of the game with just 6 seconds to go in the period, assisted by Bailey and the also red-hot Joe Corvo.

The 2nd period was all New York. Ilya Kovalchuk opened the scoring on the power play with a point rocket slap shot beating a heavily screened Cary Price to make it 2-1, assisted by Bergenheim and Bailey. Kovalchuk would strike again on his next shift, assisted by Corvo and Witt making 3-1 5 minutes into the 2nd period. The Islanders short-handed unit nabbed what proved to be the GWG on a slick pass by Tavares to Okposo at the 10:57 mark making it 4-1.

The Canadiens were not about to lay down quietly, however, as they picked up two goals in rapid succession in the 3rd period. Cammalleri netted a power play goal 10:30 in, and Andrei Kostistyn followed it up 15 seconds later to make it 4-3. Roloson and the Islanders, however, would manage to hold on to the lead and pick up victory #6 in a row.

The Islanders 4 goals came on 34 shots, 1/6 on the power play. The Canadiens took 29 shots and were 1/3 on the power play.

With the win, the Islanders improve to 22-11-3, giving them 47 points, which is good for 2nd in the Eastern Conference. They remain home for a matchup with the 12-21-2 Tampa Bay Lightning.

Isles Crush Lightning, Suffer a Huge Scare in the Process

Uniondale (AP) - The New York Islanders saw their season flash before their very eyes when rookie sensation John Tavares skated off the ice favoring his left arm after suffering a vicious slash from the Lightning's Steven Stamkos. Stamkos was given a 5 minute major for slashing, and a game misconduct as a result of the slash and the injury sustained by Tavares. Things were not looking good as it was reported that Tavares would not return to the ice for the remainder of the game.

However, the Islanders medical staff did x-rays and revealed there were no fractures to the wrist or forearm, and cleared Tavares to return to action as soon as he is ready to play. In the end, what looked like devastation ends up being naught but a forearm bruise.

As for the game, the Islanders took full advantage of power plays, scoring 4 of their 6 goals in a 6-3 victory on the power play, including 2 on the 5 minute power play resulting from the slashing injury.

The Isles return to play at home on the 23rd against the 19-13-4 Maple Leafs. The Isles improved to 23-11-3 with the victory, and are now in first place in the East.

Isles Point Streak Continues, but Win Streak Ends

Uniondale (AP) - The Isles winning streak has finally been snapped tonight on the efforts of a comeback led by Phil Kessel, as the Isles fell 4-3 in overtime. For the second game in a row, an Islanders player left the game with an injury following a slashing, resulting in a game misconduct. This time the victim was Bruno Gervais who took it from Alexei Ponkikarovsky, in the first period. Gervais would return late in the 2nd period and play the remainder of the game. We will know more about his injury tomorrow.

As for the game, the Islanders opened the scoring with 3 minutes to go in the 1st period on a power play goal by Josh Bailey, assisted by Bergenheim and Shanahan. The Leafs would answer back in the 2nd period with a power play goal on their own as Tomas Kaberle fired a laser from the point beating the heavily screened Rick DiPietro. The Islanders would catch a huge break 9 minutes later as Joe Corvo intercepted a pass after coming out of the penalty box and scored a breakaway goal, his 3rd goal of the season to make it 2-1. Jeff Tambellini would later re-direct a Joe Corvo point shot to increase the lead to 3-1 with :30 remaining in the 2nd period.

The 3rd Period, however, was all Phil Kessel and the Maple Leafs. Kessel got the Leafs to within 1 just :23 in to the 3rd period. He would add the game tying goal 13 minutes later to tie things up at 3 a piece, as Rick DiPietro and the Islanders continue their defensive and goaltending struggles. Luke Schenn notched the game winner with just 1:04 to go in OT on another clean shot from the point that DiPietro was totally screened on.

Toskala saved 32 out of 35 shots in the Leafs victory, while DiPietro saved just 25 out of 29.

The Isles fell to 23-11-4 with the loss, while the Leafs improved to 21-13-4. The Isles are off for two days for the Christmas break before a road-home back-to-back at MSG against the Rangers, followed by a home game against the Flyers.

                      Geravis Out 2-3 Weeks

Uniondale (AP) - The Isles received some bad news on this Christmas Eve, learning that half of their top defensive line in Bruno Gervais will miss the next 2-3 weeks with a hand injury sustained when he was slashed in last night's game against the Maple Leafs.

The Isles caught a bit of a break, as Brett Lebda of the Detroit Red Wings was sent through waivers, and was quickly claimed as a very short term replacement for the walking wounded that the Isles have at defense right now as they are not only missing Gervais, but have, of course, been missing Radek Martinek for 9 games now, and is expected to miss all the way until the end of February with a broken leg. Lebda will pair with Streit for the time being.

The Isles have also called up enforcer Jeremy Reich from Bridgeport and sent down Jon Sim. Sim had been a decent contributor on the checking line, but the Isles were looking to bring up a fighter.

Isles Power Play Scores 3, Isles Again Top Rangers

New York (AP) - The Islanders and Rangers have met 3 times in the last 2 weeks or so, and it's been all Islanders. Today was no different, as the Isles rolled to a 4-1 victory over their rivals on the strength of 3 power play goals and a strong performance in net from Dwayne Roloson.

The Isles took the lead at the 19:44 mark in the first period on a power play goal by Okposo. They would never relinquish that lead. Okposo picked up his 2nd goal of the game, also on the power play at the 7 minute park in the 2nd period. The Rangers got it to within one 7 minutes later on an even strength goal by Gaborik, but that was it for them.

Bailey made it 3-1 just :50 into the 3rd period, and an empty netter scored by Shanahan gave the Isles the 4-1 victory.

Roloson had his best outing of the season in net stopping 25 out of 26 shots in the victory. Lundvist stopped just 24 out of 28.

With the victory, the Isles improve to 24-11-4. They have a huge game tomorrow at the Coliseum against the 24-10-3 Flyers. Bruno Gervaishas been cleared to play with his hand injury, but isn't expected to be at full strength.

Isles Can't Beat Flyers Yet Again, Lose in SO

Uniondale (AP) - The Flyers have proven to be the toughest team for the Islanders to play against this season thus far. Prior to tonight it had been the outstanding goaltending of Ray Emery shutting the Islanders high powered offense down. Tonight was a different story, but the same end result. The Isles were dropped by the Flyers in a 6-5 shootout loss, in what proved to be a shootout of a game.

It looked early on that this would be all Islanders as Joe Corvo opened the scoring 8 minutes in, continuing his red hot scoring streak to give the Isles the early 1-0 lead. Brendan Shanahan would fire home a point shot 4 minutes later on the power play to make it 2-0. The Isles would take the 2-0 lead into the locker room.

However, the Flyers would quickly and drastically turn the tables, scoring 4 unanswered goals in the second period, started off by Scott Hartnell just 3 minutes into the period. Claude Giroux would then net a natural hat trick in the ensuing 8 minutes on 3 consecutive shifts at the 7:03 mark, 12:22 mark, and 15:24 mark to give the Flyers a 4-2 advantage. A power play goal by Mark Streit and a goal by John Tavares with just 10 seconds to go in the 2nd period made the score 4-4 heading into the 3rd.

Danny Briere gave the Flyers a 5-4 lead 6 minutes into the 3rd period. And of course, with the way the game went, Tavares would equal that for his second goal of the game 6 minutes later to tie it up at 5-5 with 7 minutes to go in regulation. There would be no further scoring in the 3rd or overtime, and Danny Briere would net the lone shootout goal to give the Flyers the victory.

The Islanders power play continued to be red hot tonight, as they went 3 for 6. The Isles also outshot the Flyers by a margin of 43 to 33, but it was for naught. The loss drops the Islanders to 24-11-5, and Roloson to 8-4-3. The Isles remain home for a matchup with the 23-10-6 Columbus Blue Jackets. The game will mark the halfway point of the season.

                            Isles Bounce Back

Uniondale (AP) - The Islanders bounced back from their loss with a fairly uneventful victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Isles picked up a goal in each period en route to the victory. DiPietro picked up first star honors after sitting out the last two games, saving 24 out of 25 shots in the victory.

The Isles played most of the game without Tavares, who received a game misconduct for a slashing penalty just 5 minutes into the 1st period.

With the win the Isles improve to 25-11-5. They return to action on the 31st at home against the Sens.
