Isles Report: 4th Straight Win, Huge Loss, and Tough Stretch

Islanders Defeat Thrashers 4-3

The Islanders picked up their 4th consecutive win improving to 11-6-0 on the strength of a 4-3 victory in a chippy, penalty-filled fiasco with the Thrashers. The Islanders got off to an early lead scoring two power play goals in the first period, and 3 goals total in the period to lead 3-1 after 1. They would add what proved to be a needed insurance goal in the 2nd to make it 4-1.

The Thrashers scored all 3 of their goals on the power play, in 9 total power play opportunities, including 2 in the 3rd period, though the final one was insignificant as it was scored with 0.6 seconds left in the game.

Picking up goals in the victory for the Islanders were Josh Bailey (7), Rob Schremp (2), Mark Streit (4), and Matt Moulson (7). Corvo, Schremp, Bergenheim, Shanahan, and Park all turned in one assist each. DiPietro turned away 35 out of 38 shots to pick up his 5th win of the season.

Josh Bailey Suffers a Broken Hand

Islanders center Josh Bailey suffered a broken left hand sustained on a slash from Thrashers rookie Evander Kane. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks and is unlikely to return until after January 1st. Bailey was a major contributor to the Islanders offense with 7 goals and 4 assists through the first 17 games of the season.

The Islanders wil dress Jeff Tambellini in Bailey's place and move Schremp over to center making the 3rd line Tambellini-Schremp-Comeau, which is also the forward unit for the second power play. Frans Nielsen will take over Bailey's penalty killing duties.

Islanders Begin 7 Game Road Trip

It's time to determine whether or not the Islanders are for real as they set off on a 7 game road trip with stops in Washington, Carolina, Florida, Boston, Minnesota, St. Louis and Toronto. It's not the toughest opponents in the world outside of the Washington and Boston matchups, but any time you go on the road for 7 games it'll test your ability as a team. The trip includes two back-to-backs so we expect DiPietro to get a majority of the starts, likely 5 out of the 7, but Roloson and DiPietro will definitely split up the back-to-back nights.
