Malkin Scores Twice In 9 Seconds, Dramatics Ensue

    By Stephen Holley
    Anchorage Daily News

Turns out the early warmup paid off for Evgeni Malkin.

The star center scored twice in a 9 second span in a 3-0 win tonight at home over the 19-7-5 Calgary Flames.

Malkin's heroics would ensue with the game scoreless midway through the third period when he would get a breakaway after stepping through the Calgary defence while Anchorage was on the powerplay. Malkin was hauled down to his knees where he was able to deke before failing to get a shot off.

After Kiprusoff corralled the puck, referee Paul Divorskee indicating the most exciting play in hockey...a penalty shot.

Malkin would lazer a wrister high to the glove side past Kiprusoff giving the hometown Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

After this beautiful goal, Malkin made history.

The Wolverines remained on the powerplay after the penalty shot goal. Malkin would win the faceoff and throw a pass back to Ed Jovanovski before darting toward the blueline, where he would recieve an Jovanovski return pass before blasting a slap shot from the opposite cirle past Bryzgalov; not only for his 2nd goal in 9 seconds, but his 22nd on the season.

"I don't know what to say about it...I just do what I do. I've been doing it my whole life!!!", laughed the superstar center after the historic performance.

"It was something I'll never forget and I'm thrilled to have been here to witness it. Its great to see these things happening in a wonderful hockey hotbed like Anchorage", said Doc Emerik who was in town for the Hockey Night In Canada broadcast.

Don't be decieved by Malkin's 22 goals and 6 assists either. He is still a puck distrubuting center...

only his wingers are failing to score with regularity.

As of December 1st, Malkin wasn't even in the top 10 in NHL shots on goal. You don't need to be when you've scored 22 goals on 98 shots, good for 5th in the NHL among players with 10 or more goals.

Scottie Upshall added an empty net goal extending his lucky goal streak to two games.

The Wolverines are 13-1-0 at home this season.

That is one of the scariest pictures of Malkin I've ever seen.

Good write-up though. I like how you mentioned the referee's name on the penalty shot, that was a nice touch.

          Where do I start?

How about with the fact that Peter Forsberg has accumulated just 7 goals and 7 assists and a -18 +/- rating over the first 27 games of the regular season?

Many are lamenting the signing of the Swedish postage stamp hero, especially in light that it required extra money to sign Forsberg since Anchorage was an upstart franchise with little to attract world class talent to its service.

"I dont know really how to react to all of this. I've never had such grotesque struggles in the NHL. This is new to me...I'll just keep working hard and hopefully things can turn around", remarked Forsberg during an intense press-conference in Anaheim after the Wolverines 3-1 loss to the Ducks.

Wolverines CEO, Dave Swansen, urged fans and media to be patient with the Swede noting that he has only been back in the NHL for just 27 games and that it takes time for players reacclimate to the speed and physicality of the league, especially after spending a considerable amount of time in the SEL.

"I think people need to chill out. Peter works hard and has had some tough breaks so far this year...but the season is long and things can still even out for him", stated star center Evgeni Malkin.

But seriously, how are you a -18 on a 5th seeded team? Even more, how can a team be 16-10-1 with their second line center playing so poorly? The answer? Good goaltending and Evgeni Malkin carrying the team through the first 1/3 of the season.

So it remains to be seen what Foppa can become this season, but lets hope something happens relatively soon or the trade deadline might be rather interesting in Anchorage.

It is shocking that Forsberg's plus minus is so awful. In my franchise I for some reason wasn't paying attention to my Hershey Bear's plus minus. Then I realized my top center Mathieu Perreault was a -12 through 15 games or so. I was shocked and disappointed because I pride myself on defense. Some players just aren't very good at defense and their stats prove it. Hopefully Peter the Great will get his act together. Maybe he's struggling to find his legs like Bure LOL!

Really great franchise, enjoying it...minus the Malkin picture!!!

Yeah...the Malkin pic was the best I could find. Its hard to use pics since I can't show him in Pittsburgh uniform. Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, his +/- woes are hard to believe. Hopefully things turn around for him. I don't want to trade him...plus with the way he's played I couldn't realistically take much for him since in real life nobody would offer much for an aging player who's playing so poorly.

I think I'll keep him through the season, but doubtful we'll see him back next year.

Yay! Shane Doan got it going. I really like him as a player. Maybe the switch to center will provide some much needed secondary scoring. So far so good!

                          Wolverines Face Treacherous Waters Ahead

                          By Stephen Holley
                          Anchorage Daily News

The Anchorage Wolverines have approached a tough section of the 2009-2010 season.

After winning 8 in a row, the Wolverines have lost 5 of the last 8 and start the next five game segment at home against the San Jose Sharks who lead the Western Conference...

and have scored 40 or so more goals than the Wolverines this season.

The Wolverines appear to have stalled along with Evgeni Malkin. Malkin, unfortunately, has accounted for around 25% of the Wolverines goals this campaign. San Jose comes to town with no shortage of weapons as Danny Heatley is one goal behind Malkin on the NHL leader board. The Wolverines will need every bit of their 13-2-0 NHL leading home record to defeat the jaugernauts from California.

                          And thats just the beginning...

The Wolverines will then embark on a 4-game road trip. When you consider the Wolverines uninspired play on the road this season there is plenty to be nervous about.

Wish Malkin luck, the Wolves are gonna need it.
