    Leafs update

The injury bug continues to decimate the center position! (C) Braydon Schenn suffered a lacerated arm after blocking a shot from the point during the Toronto Ottawa game, he is expected to miss five to six weeks with the injury.

Toronto was quick to respond to this most recent injury, with Schenn's injury Toronto is very weak down the middle, so Brian Burke was left with no choice but to dip into free agency.

    Toronto signs
    (C) Doug Weight 80 OVR 39 years old C POT 1 year @ 500K
    (C) Jeff Halpern 79 OVR 34 years old C POT 1 year @ 530K

Drafted 34th overall in the second round by the new York Islanders in 1990 Weight brings years of experience to Toronto's young group. It is expected Weight will center either the second or third lines for Toronto until injuries clear. Last season Weight added 1 goal 16 assist for 17 points in 36 games.

Halpern will pick up either second or third line duty, his expertise in the circle is highly anticipated as Toronto has struggled at the dot. Last year Halpen put up 9 goals 10 assist for 19 points in 71 games.

      Good stuff...I'm following.

Truly, your team is struggling to score. You're lucky to be .500, eh?

I know all about a team that has trouble scoring goals. My BAP with the Blue Jackets, we have only scored 90 goals in 38 games.

Hang in there, the scoring will pick up. I'm following this, great read so far!

Yes I have been very lucky to be 500 so far, though I feel scoring is picked up, but I had to sacrifice defense to get it, so GAA is climbing.

Ouch! Nash is feeling lazy this year?

          Leafs update
Well readers I wish I had good news to bear, the injury bug has slammed me again.

RW Colton Orr (2 shorthanded goals this season) Broke his leg blocking a shot for the team during a penalty kill, he is estimated at 5 weeks, possibly returning on January 11th.

(RW) Mike Brown has been called up and will see time on the 4th line during Orr's absence

Trade deadline is approaching quickly, and it would seem Brian Burke intends on being a seller this deadline, we got a hold of a league wide email sent by Brian Burke making it clear who was available below is a copy of the email.

Re: Basement to penthouse, the return of the leafs

Seeing as it would save me one write up I am going to post my trade deadline moves and a year end write up before I advance to next year. Once again guys I am sorry things moved so quickly, but I had all this information written down on paper and didn't have a chance to post it. Now that I will be caught up it will go back to a normal pace!

                      Leafs trade deadline recap

In the days leading up to the trade deadline, it would seem GM Brian Burke's email proved to be a smart move, the phones in Toronto were ringing off the hook!

                      Toronto trades

D Carl Gunnarsson 78 OVR 24 years old B- POT 1 year @ 800K remaining on his contract

During the trade deadline Toronto kept the phones working, receiving a call from Pittsburg, their offer was

RW Colby Armystrong 82 OVR 28 years old C POT 3 years @ 3M remaining on his contract

2011 1st round pick (PIT) 2012 1st round pick (PIT)

                      Toronto quickly accepted the deal.

Near the end of trade deadline Toronto made a call to Colorado offering the following trade
D Francois Beauchemin 82 OVR 30 years old C POT 2 years @ 3.8M remaining on his contract

                      in exchange for

                      Colorado was quick to accept.

With only minutes remaining until the deadline Toronto made a call to the New York Islanders whom they have made deals with before in the year, in which they offered
LW Nikolai Kulemin 80 OVR 24 years old C POT 2 years @ 2.35M remaining on his contract
                      2012 5th round pick (TOR)

                      in exchange for
LW Nino Niederreiter 71 OVR 18 years old B- POT 1 year @ 790k remaining on his contract
The Islanders claimed it was a no brainer, and immediately said yes!

It was an exciting trade deadline to be apart of! stay tuned for the year end stat recap.

No OBG, I simmed about every third game or so. I had alot of this played before I even started writing about it here, I record all my moves and retype when I get time to here.

I am sitting at just before the 2011-2012 draft and I did not want to move ahead until I had all this information posted. but now that I am roughly caught up I can resume at a normal pace.

You should see the stack of paper going into the recycling now I'm done with it :P

I hope the advanced pace didn't cheapen the franchise, but if I continued to store information and post it at the rate i was before, I would have never caught up to where I was really playing games.

Toronto Maple Leafs 2011-2012 season opener edition

Welcome back readers! we are just preparing to launch into a brand new season with the Maple Leafs, Below you will find the updated moves during the off season.

Once again this off season Brian Burke moved out alot of players from the Marlie's, releasing players he felt did not fit into the mold he was trying to cast.

                            Toronto releases:
                            (C) John Mitchell 79 OVR 26 years old C POT
                            (C) Jeff Halpern 78 OVR 35 years old D- POT
                            (C) Tim Brent 74 OVR 27 years old C POT
                            (C) Darrly Boyce 73 OVR 26 years old C POT
(LW) Ryan Hamilton 72 OVR 26 years old C POT
(LW) Stefano Giliati 69 OVR 23 years old C POT
(RW) Greg Scott 71 OVR 23 years old C- POT
(RW) Braydon Irwin 74 OVR 24 years old C POT
(RW) Eric Godard 77 OVR 31 years old C POT
(RW) Alex Berry 73 OVR 25 years old C POT
                            (D) Danny Richmond 73 OVR 26 years old C POT
                            (D) Matt Jones 74 OVR 27 years old C POT

With so many releases the media was quick to jump onto Burke, asking exactly;y what he was doing, since the Marlie's turned out a winning season the prior year, which included a first round playoff birth. In typical Burke fashion he was quoted saying "You will have to wait, watch and see but there is a plan behind all of this. I thank those players that were released today in their service of our club, it was not an easy decision but changes had to be made to this club, and that did not exclude the base, which is our minor league club. Broader the base, the taller the tower"

Twelve players were released in total, no buy outs were issued, all of them were expiring contracts. It will be interesting to see what Brian has up his sleeve, that is a huge loss in player depth for the Marlie's.

Toronto only had one draft pick this year, 28th overall in the first round, which they drafted a defense men who went unsigned for this year.

Lets move on to the Free agent frenzy! Toronto signed the follow free agents:

Lets start with the players Toronto resigned

Toronto resigns (LW) Luca Caputi 75 OVR 22 years old B- POT to a three year 1M per year contract
Caputi was a big part of the Marlie's sucess last season, potting 18 goals 38 assists for 56 points with a +12 rating

Toronto signs (LW) Brad Ross Ross was a draft pick from 2009-2010 season that went unsigned last year, he will be expected to play first or second line duties with the Marlie's, adding his two way skill and grit to a depleted roster
                            70 OVR 19 years old B- POT 3 years @ 765K per season

Toronto resigns (LW) Jay Rosehill 74 OVR 26 years old C- POT 3 years @ K per season. Jay Produced 4 goals 10 assists for 14 points and a -2 rating while defending his team mates last year, slotting on the fourth line Rosehill produced 95 penalty minutes and will be counted on to do much of the same this year.

Toronto resigns (LW) Kirill Kabanov 75 OVR 19 years old B POT 8 years @ 2M per season. Kirill spent a full 82 games last year on the big club, as an 18 year old rookie he produced 12 goals 12 assists for 24 points and a -11 rating. Brian Burke was quoted saying "Kirill is one of the corner stones of our club, he will be a future scoring winger and we intend to give him every opportunity to excel in that role"

Toronto Resigns (G) Steve Mason 85 OVR 23 years old B POT 8 years @6M per season. Mason only played two games for the leafs last year, producing a 1 and 1 record with an 0.83 GAA and 97.6 save percentage. Burke was quoted as saying "Steve is our number one goaltender we have desperately been searching for, we believe, as his contract clearly states that he will be one of the premier goaltenders of the future.

As for depth, Toronto Sent an offer sheet to the L.A Kings, which no draft picks were needed to be exchanged, for (C) Tyler Bozak 80 OVR 25 years old C POT 1 year @ 945K with the Kings last year Bozak produced 18 goals 43 assists and 61 points in 82 games. Bozak will depended on to be a third/fourth line center so expect his production to drop accordingly. As a returning leaf (Bozak was released last year) Tyler stated to the media that he hopes he can prove himself this year and earn a longer term contract with the Leafs.

Toronto signs free agent (D) Hall Gil 83 OVR 36 years old D- POT 1 year @ 1.5M. Gill, a stay at home defense men put up 5 goals 23 assists for 28 points last year with the Montreal Canadiens. Gill who is another returning leaf stated that, it wouldn't be such a bad thing if he played out his final year(s) here in Toronto.

Toronto signs free agent (RW) Teemu Selanne 81 OVR 41 years old D- POT 1 year @ 705K. Selanne had an excellent year last year despite his age putting an amazing 30 goals and 29 assists for 59 points. The Finnish flash stated earlier that it was an easy decision to come to this club and play with former teammate Paul Kariya. Selanne will be paired with kariya on either the third or fourth line to provide secondary scoring, so expect his overall points to decrease.

Toronto signs free agent (C) Scott Nichol 76 OVR 36 years old E POT 1 year @ 500K. It is expected that Nichol will spend this year adding depth to the Marlies

Toronto signs free agent (C) Todd Marchant 76 OVR 38 years old D- POT 1 year @ 660K. Todd will center a line for the Marlies this year, it is anticipated that he will help guide the younger upcoming NHLers.

Toronto signes free agent (C) Jamie Lundmark 76 OVR 30 years old C POT 1 year @ 500k. Lundmark is expected to see time centering a line for the Marlies, further adding to thier depth and leadership

As the leafs move forward it will be looking to the future, this is a contract year for many key players including (C) John Tavares (LW) Kris Versteeg (LW) Nino Niederreiter (D) Keith Aulie (D) Mikael Osterberg some of which will no doubt be looking for healthy raises. Heading into this season with 4.825M In cap space remaining it could be interesting to see the approach GM Brian Burke takes with his club.

As the regular season approaches we have gotten word what the line match ups will be to at least start this season

                              Coach's comments:
"We have done a good job pressuring off forechekcs and establishing a net presence, scoring has been good and we are strong on the offensive side of the puck. Once Mason settles into the net we will be where we need to be"

                              Player interview: Steve Mason
"I will admit that I have had alot of trouble seeing the puck, but in the last four games (3 of which are wins) it has been coming back, I have been able to peek around traffic and hunt the puck. The guys are playing fine in front of me, I just need to up my game"

                              Team news:
GM Brian Burke has unfolded some of his future plans in the first week of the season making some moves.

Toronto Trades G Jonas Gustavsson 81 OVR 27 years old C POT 1 year @ 1.35M left on his contract
                              TO BOS FOR
                              2012 2nd round pick (BOS)
It would appear Burke has laid the full responsibility of being #1 on recently signed tender Steve Mason. Gustavsson gets traded to a market with 2 possible number one goalies, but being his contract year as well as Tukka rasks contract year it will be interesting to see what happens in bean town.

Toronto signs free agent G Jakub Jovar 77 OVR 23 years old C POT 3 years @ 500K per season
I see this as Burke stocking club depth a bit, Goal tending depth is currently weak in numbers and ability this is a solid signing for the Marlie's

Toronto signs free agent G Curtis Mchelhinney 76 OVR 28 years old C POT 1 year @ 500k per season
Burke has brought in another possible Marlie #1 or back up to Mason, consider this depth options.

Toronto trades G Corey Schneider 81 OVR 25 years old B- POT 1 year @605K remaining on his contract
                              To NYI for
2012 2nd round pick (NYI) 2012 3rd round pick (NYI)
Burke has let go of a potential future number 1, but after signing Mason for 8 years, it is clear who he intends to be in net for Toronto.

Toronto trades D Henrik Seidenberg 63 OVR 19 years old B- POT currently unsigned
                              To DAL for
2012 2nd round pick (DAL) 2012 7th round pick (DAL)
Seidenberg was the result of Toronto's first round pick acquired form the Pittsburg penguins, I would assume this is the result of contract disputes between Henrik and the club.

                                Leafs trade update
Brian Burke has pulled yet another future star out of another organization

D Pavel Kubina 82 OVR 34 years old 1 year @ 4.275M remaining on his contract

Burke had the following to say during his media conference
"First off I would like to say that we felt it was unfair to keep Luca in the organisation at this point, he will be ready to step into the NHL soon as out club roster is full right now, I would like to thank him for his efforts for our organisation and hope him the best in the future"

"Duncan was tough to let go, he is a stabilizing force on this team, but to get, you have to give and in the long term I believe this deal is what we were looking for. Thank you for your time with us Duncan"

"Pavel is returning to us, he has been struggling in Tampa bay since his return, but he adds excellent depth to our blue line as we move forward, to what hopefully is a playoff run this season, I believe Pavel will be instrumental in that"

"Victor is heading into his first contract season, and he has tremendous upside on all sides of the puck. We are very excited to have him here in Toronto, and we hope to have a contract nailed down soon"
