Re: Basement to penthouse, the return of the leafs

I am currently doing a Predators dynasty and if you want a solid big center Wilson is a great fit. He has been a physical presence with decent offensive ability for me and I am planning on having him as my number 1 center for long term. He is at his best in front of the net on the PP for me.

Although with your young talent it would be tough to send away any of those guys you have. Of course if you had someone else on your team to move in order to give one of the younger guys a couple years to develop in your system that might work too.

Ahh thanks for the input, glad your reading

I believe I will stick with who I have at center for the time being. I am in year three right now and have a bit of a backlog at center, but I am year three, Schenn is ready for NHL action the other two are on the cusp.

        Leafs year end update

        Team record:
        35-40-7

I couldn't believe how many injuries I got. It really seemed like as soon as I got a guy back, two more would drop. I couldn't keep up and ended up with a loosing record. Let me tell you, managment was not very happy with my results this season!!

          Off season moves

          Season ending interview: Brian Burke
Well yeah, it was a bitter and disappointing end to a season that everyone expected to be productive and long, but if you take a look at it, we played 35 or so games there with multiple roster players out per game, I cant even guess at our man games lost over the last 35 games, it was something ridiculously high though. but as a positive our young players grew as hockey players and those that we count on in this club stepped up large. Now we head into an off season that has some very key contract talks to be finished up. Personally I am very excited for this off season, we have allot of plans laid into place and into motion.

Matt Duchene and Carey Price are both heading into contract years, as superstars of this club you can expect a hefty raise over their previous contracts.

Since coming to Toronto Duchene has put up 69 goals 71 assists +66 56PIMS 23 PPG in 140 games

Price has logged 7456 minutes posting 63 wins 60 losses 2.49 GAA in 125 games played as a leaf

          Off season moves:
Toronto had a very quiet draft this season, sitting tight with the assets they had, prior to the draft GM Brian Burke mentioned they would be holding their cards tight to their chests this draft year, as many of the moves planned were to be done during the free agency period where Brian specifically stated, expect your socks to be knocked off.

          Draft day interview: Carey Price
We are currently in on going contract talks, I am excited to get a deal done and I believe we are close to the final numbers, this is going to be a fantastic organization to play for, we have so many young and dedicated players, with a fantastic coaching and management staff.

          Toronto releases:
C Time Brent 74 overall 28 years old C potential
C Christian Hanson 75 overall 26 years old C potential
LW Clarke Macarthur 79 overall 27 years old C potential
LW Kris Verstegg 81 overall 25 years old C potential
LW Nikolai Kulemin 81 overall 25 years old C potential
RW Dale Mitchell 70 overall 23 years old C- potential
RW Richard Greenop 72 overall 23 years old C- potential
RW Eric Fehr 80 overall 26 years old C potential
D Hal Gill 81 overall 37 years old D potential
D Brett Lebda 78 overall 30 years old C potential
D Juraj Mikus 74 overall 23 years old C potential
D Korbinian Hoizer 69 overall 24 years old C potential
G Ben Scrivens 71 overall 25 years old C- potential

Clearly clearing space for impending moves, Burke was quoted mentioning some of the players that were released could be returning to the Leafs roster when all the moving about is completed, but until that picture becomes much clearer they had to be released so they would also have a fair chance of progressing their careers.

          Toronto Resigns:
          G James Reimer 24 years old 3 years @ 750K per season 76 overall C potential
Reimer was resigned to solidify the Marlies net and continue to provide goaltending depth to the organization.

          D Keith Aulie 23 years old 2 years @ 1M per season 77 overall B- potential
There are hopes Aulie will crack the big clubs roster in the upcoming season, with potential to grow, size and grit to offer Aulie may be on of the future shut down D men for the leafs.

LW Kenneth Park 19 years old 3 years @ 550K per season 63 overall B- potential

RW Casey Sauer 19 years old 3 years @500K per season 57 overall B- potential

          G Carey Price 25 years old 8 years @ 6M per season 88 overall B potential
It's done! Burke has locked up a huge piece of his puzzle in Price, signing the young star to a length and lucrative contract Toronto fans can look forward to years of stellar goaltending from this stud.

          C Matt Duchene 21 years old 7 years @ 5.5M per season 87 overall B- potential
Duchene has done so much for this young team since he arrived, immediately making on ice and locker room impacts he has carved out a spot in all Maple Leafs fans hearts since his entrance into the ACC. Fear not fans and readers we have seven long years to enjoy this bonafied NHL talent, with upside to still explore you can look forward to Duchene's continuing offensive output.

          Player Development:
C Matt Duchene was 86 progressed to 87 B-/B-/B- potential
C Braydon Schenn was 74 progressed to 79 B/B/B- potential
C Nazem Kadri was 74 progressed to 78 B/B/B potential
          C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was 70 progressed to 75 A-/B/B- potential
RW David Backes was 83 progressed to 84 C/C/C potential
D Drew Doughty was 89 progressed to 90 B/B/B potential
D Steve Pratt was 81 progressed to 84 A-/B/B- potential
D Matt Lashoff was 74 progressed to 75 C/C/C potential
G Carey Price was 86 progressed to 88 B/B/B potential
LW Taylor Hall was 86 progressed to 88 A/B/A- potential
LW Magnus Paajarvi was 78 progressed to 84 B/B/B potential
D Keith Aulie was 75 progressed to 77 B-/B-/B- potential

          Player interview: Matt Duchene
It was an easy contract talk, Brian and I had long ago decided that we would put off talks until the draft was done, both of us were very confident that a long term deal could be reached that was in favor of both interested parties. I was very excited to get the deal done, this club is going places and I wanted to be part of that.

          Toronto signs free agents:
          G Adam Brown 20 years old 3 years @ 500K 74 overall B potential
Finding Brown sitting in free agency was a shock, and I quickly scooped him up to put pressure on Reimer for the net on the marlies. With a high overall and good potential Brown has a bright future ahead of him.

RW Brett Connolly 20 years old 3 years @ 500k per season 74 overall B- potential
Connolly was brought in to add scoring depth to the organization as a whole and to continue to make the Marlies a competitive place to play.

          RW J.P Dumont 34 years old 1 year @ 3M 83 overall C- potential
Dumont was brought in for veteran presence and scoring depth

          D Colin White 34 years old 1 year 1.87M 84 overall C- potential
White is a gritty hard hitting D man, I was looking to pick up a few of these guys to make opposing forwards keep an eye out when they enter our zone, something that has been lacking on the club in the past two years

          LW Ryan Smyth 36 years old 1 year @ 1.5M 83 overall E potential
Even though Ryan will occupy my bottom 6 forward position I was excited to bring a guy like him in.

          D Brian Rafalski 38 years old 1 year 1.5M 81 overall D- potential
Rafalski, now in the twilight of his career will see a minor role in Toronto he was added as a pure depth move.

          D Hal Gill 37 years old 1 year 1.5M 81 overall D potential
I couldn't resist bringing skillzy back into the fold, he will not pre as predominate as he was last year, stepping even further back in the depth charts and letting the young guns shine but I do count on him to lock down my D zone, and crush anyone silly enough to near the net.

          C Rob Hisey 27 years old 3 years @ 770K 76 overall C potential
Rob was brought on to give me options and depth down the middle for the Marlies, I was unsure if Kadri would crack the big leagues this year or not, if he does Rob can take over as number 1. If not Rob will just make the club that much stronger, providing depth.

          C Nick Tarnasky 27 years old 1 year @ 1.5M 79 overall C potential
Tarnasky is a tough guy, and I wanted that option for both the Leafs and Marlies. I am still unsure if I will use Kadri as a center or winger, this signing gives me options if I so wish to use them.

          D Mike Green 26 years old 4 years @ 5.2M per season 87 overall C- potential
After Green and Washington had their fall out I was happy enough to scoop him up, even though he is registered as an OFD he could easily be called a TWD as he plays a strong physical game, has speed to rush and talent to shoot. after adding Green my defensive depth is amazing I have guys very willing and able on both sides of the puck.

          Toronto Offer sheet:
LW Evander Kane 21 years old 6 years @ 5.5M per season 85 overall B potential
Kane was brought in to solidify Toronto as a weapon to be watched, I expect my powerplay units to both be lethal this season.

          Toronto trades:
          D David Sheilds 21 years old 3 years @ 870K 75 overall B potential
          2013 4th (TOR) 2014 7th (TOR)
          TO New York Islanders fOR:
RW Micheal Grabner 24 years old 7years @ 2.355M per season 80 overall B potential
FINALLY!! I have been trying to get Grabner out of long island for 2 years now. this opens a multitude of options for me up front, in fact this makes it so I have too much offensive skill. Grabner is a top 6 forward and I am out of top 6 spots!

          Game 1 packs a punch!

in the opening game of the season toronto players
D Hal Gill (elbow surgery) was put out for three weeks
D Brian Rafalski (a sore hip) will miss two weeks of action
C Tyler Bozak (a pulled groin) will miss two weeks of game time

To fill these holes Toronto has called up
D Keith Aulie who will see time on the third D pair, second penalty kill unit and second 3 man penalty kill unit
D Matt Lashoff who will slot into the third D line
C Nazem Kadri who will center the third line

            10 game update!

            Club record:
            8-2-0

Everyone has been pulling thier weight on both sides of the puck for the most part, it is awesome how much offense off the rush I can create with my high team speed, even my three big D men, Doughty Pratt and Green lead rushes sometimes due to their footspeed.

Offense isnt my problem right now! in fact, nothing really is. lines 3/4 could shape it up a bit, but I have had three NHL'ers out for 9 or so games each already, so that could tighten up soon

Thanks for reading Jack. I hope it is, after all my offseason moves and contracts handed out I have exactly .927 in free cap space remaining this year. I should have enough depth to easily survive any injury woes. We shall see

With such a young roster, I expect you to be contenders for at least ten years.

And starting the season 8-2 really helps. That defense is just disgusting.

Thanks for reading hero. I am happy I got most of my core guys locked into long term deals, but I decided after the craptastic year I had last season that I would go all out this year, sparing no expense. There are big name guys on my roster that won't be here next year and I am up against the cap, with roughly only .927 in space also only have two late round picks this up coming draft. I am last years chicago and this years bruins I will have to shed high talent youth next year.

Sounds like this season it's either win the cup or its a failure. Either way next off season looks to be a tough one.

Leafs press conference with Brian Burke

Good evening fellow readers and leaf fans, thank you again for gathering on short notice.

I just wanted to touch on a few items of concern that have been circulating in the media recently. first off we are hard up against the cap so rosters moves will be difficult.

I believe we have a contending team as it is and do not see a great need to add to our current roster at this time, we have a highly skilled group here but also a group that understands what it takes to win and what it costs to compete in today's NHL.

Now this is not to say that I have turned a blind eye to the trade market or don't have our scouting team out there looking at potential players. we are also aware that next year we are going to have some hard choices to make with our line up but we are prepared for that.

There are also players within the organization that we feel are ready to take on larger roles and guys that are playing in diminished roles just because we are so deep right now, as such these guys will get there chance and we believe that will be sooner rather then later. To this effect we have made known that
it would be possible to remove some of depth but the return would have to be significant in the term of youth prospects and picks but this is not something we are actively pursuing we are quite happy to finish this season with the same roster we started with.

Yes there are key guys that we have named as untouchable, those being Carey Price, Matt Duchene, Steve Pratt, Drew Doughty, Magnus Paajarvi, Braydon Schenn, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Micheal Grabner.

I would like to close this conference by saying thanks for your time and support I hope you enjoy the season.

That is how I am approaching it. I went to great lengths to assure we would be able to compete for the cup this season, at the possible expense of big ticket players but the roster is very deep very skilled and with enough size toughness and grit to also win the trench wars and huge playoff battles

                            Stanley cup or bust!

I just got caught up, holy crap your year 3 team is explosive. It is the very definition of 'extensive depth'. Excellent offseason work and not to mention great GMing over the last 2 years.

But like you said, your team looks very similiar to last years Hawks - I hope it wins you a cup because if it doesn`t its going to be a messy offseason. Kudos Dynasty.

Quick question for yeah, in season 1 did you start with doing the draft yourself (Didn`t list your picks) or after the draft?
