    Spotlight Game Recap - December 30 2019

William Nylander finished with 1 goal and 1 assist to help the Maple Leafs defeat the Red Wings 5-3.

The first period was defensive until Detroit forward Fran's Nielsen would score at 16:14.

The second period was all Toronto, with Ilya Mihkeyev (04:53) & Nylander (07:08) to give them a quick 2-1 lead. Mikka Salomaki, redeeming himself for a charging penalty, scored at 11:22 to make it 3-1..

The third period was a roller coaster.

Kasperi Kapanen would score quickly at 01:17 to make it 4-1. It would remain that way until Dylan Larkin broke through at 16:11. Then Darren Helm put a scare in the Leafs at 18:31, making it 4-3.

Detroit would pull the goalie, but Khduobin would stand tall and Mihkeyev would add his second of the night at 19:55 to ice the game

      Monthly Recap - December 2019

      Monthly Record: 9-2-1
      Overall Record: 9-4-2

      Who's Hot: Morgan Reilly

He's got 11 points in 12 games. His voice of leadership makes his on-ice abilities even better because the team works better when he is in the ice. He's got 6 goals & 33 points along with a +15

      Who's Not: Travis Dermott

He had 2 points over the course of December, and his +/- rating took a hit accordingly. Coach Keefe will try to move him around the lineup to see if chemistry forms.

      Rookie Watch:

Ilya Mihkeyev: A feisty drive the key forward, he has scored 8 goals and 19 points this season. That has led to his promotion to the second line with Kerfoot and Matthews where he'll be for the foreseeable future

            Monthly Recap - December 2019

            Monthly Record: 9-3-1
            Overall Record: 24-9-4

            Who's Hot: Morgan Reilly

Having finally found a good partner in Travis Hamonic, Reilly excelled in December, scoring 12 points in 11 games. He's also averaging 25+ minutes a night, approximately 2 more than his career high, yet it seems to be helping; He's got 6 goals & 33 points along with a +15

            Who's Not: Travis Dermott

He had 2 points over the course of December, and his +/- rating took a hit accordingly. Coach Keefe will try to move him around the lineup to see if chemistry forms.

            Rookie Watch:

Ilya Mihkeyev: A feisty 6'2 powerforward, he has scored 8 goals and 19 points this season. That has led to his promotion to the second line with Kerfoot and Matthews where it's hoped they'll click

              COMPHER, BJORNFORT AQUIRED BY LEAFS

In seperate trades, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Center J.T. Compher from the Colorado Avalanche and defenseman prospect Tobias Bjornfort from the LA Kings

In exchange for Compher, the Leafs dealt injured forward Frederik Gauthier and defensive prospect Filip Kral to Colorado. Gauthier had played in just 2 games to that point. Compher will slot in as the 4th Line Center between Salomaki & Hyman.

Bjornfort was plucked from the LA Kings in exchange for defensive prospects Mac Hollowell, Jesper Lingdren & Scott Walford. Tobias was sent to the Marlies where he will play on the third pairing with Paul Ladue.

As a result of these additions, Center Gaeten Haas has been sent down to the Marlies where he will Center the top line with Nic Petan & Kenny Agostino.

Center Dominic Moore will be remaining with the Leafs permanently after a solid showing in 16 game (7 goals, 3 assists). He will play 3rd Right Wing with Connor Sheary and Brian Boyle as linemates

As a result, Marlies captaincy has been appointed to RW Pontus Aberg, with Marc Staal becoming a new Alternate Captain, joining Andrew Welinski.

NYLANDER NETS HAT TRICK IN WIN

William Nylander scored 3 goals, Mitch Marner would add a goal and 2 assists and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Boston Bruins 6-4.

The Leafs scored first, before half the people had been seated, Marner scoring at 00:25 into the first. The Leafs would then get into penalty triubyy, with John Tavares and Brian Boyle taking penalties, and the Bruins capitalizing on both to take a 2-1 lead before Nylander tied it to end the first

The second was all Toronto as Nylander, Mihkeyev and newcomer Compher would score to make it 5-2 by the periods end

The Bruins came back to life in the third. After Bergeron scored at 00:33, a blunder at 07:47 allowed Debrusk & Fast a 2-0 breakaway that Debrusk didn't miss.

The Leafs clung on for dear life going on, only breathing when Nylander completed the hat trick into an empty net at 19:35. He hilariously missed another empty netter, this one on the PowerPlay, at 19:56.

Next up, back to back home games vs Winnipeg & Los Angeles on January 17/18

LEAFS LOCK UP KHDUOBIN, BOLSTER AHL DEPTH
                      January 16 2020

Kyle Dubas, wanting a secure blanket for Andersen, signed Anton Khduobin for another year, signing him to a 1 year deal at $1.9M. He, along with 3rd string Jack Campbell, give the Leafs good depth for goaltending, something they haven't had in years.

Additionally, the Marlies announced that they had signed two players to AHL Contracts, defensemen Korbinian Holzer and Matt Taormina, both to identical 1 year, $700K contracts.

Holzer, 31, last played for the Anaheim Ducks/San Diego Gulls (2018-2019) where he scored 1 goal & 5 points in 22 NHL games, and 2 goals with 5 points in 12 AHL games.

Taormina, 33, last played with the Stockton Heat (2018-2019) where he played 31 games, scoring just 7 assists with no goals.

Both players were signed to shore up depth, instead of turning to Cal Rosen, who has a high plus/minus (+21) but otherwise has been underperforming

                        Very nice signing.

How has Nylander progressed? I see he's on the Top Line now.

He's an 86 overall right now, I just forget his stats. I know he's Top 4 on the team. I am considering switching him for either Kerfoot or Mihkeyev to balance the scoring; that second line has been underwhelming, although Kerfoot has been having a good year.

Another switch I'm considering is on defense. Reilly, Hamonic and Byfuglien are all going well. Dermott? Not so much. Swapping Dermott and Hamonic would give as good a shutdown pair as available with Hamonic-Byuglien, and creates a nice offensive duo with Reilly-Dermott, but that duo is.. suspect defensively [emoji848]

LEAFS SHUFFLE LINES AFTER A PAIR OF UGLY LOSSES, LOSE ANDERSEN TO INJURY

Frederik Andersen will be out 3 weeks after suffering a strained hamstring during a game against the Edmonton Oilers on January 22. Andersen, 24-9-2, and the Leafs just came off back to back ugly losses, 5-0 to Carolina Hurricanes and 7-2 by the Oilers. They hope to turn it around after the All Star Break, January 29 at home vs the NY Rangers. Andersen could return February 13 at home vs Pittsburgh, but more likely to play February 15 vs Dallas.

Anton Khduobin, 6-4-3, will carry the load going forward, whilst 3rd string Jack Campbell, who has yet to play a game this season, will slot in as backup. Look for him to start 1-2 games during the break, potentially against the Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators in February 2 & 9 respectively

                            To help spark the team, coach Sheldon Keefe has tweaked his lineup;

                            Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander
                            Mikheyev-Matthews-Marner
                            Sheary-Boyle-Kapenen
                            Hyman-Compher-Moore

                            Reilly-Dermott
                            Byfuglien-Hamonic
                            Phaneuf-Schmaltz

CHAMPION COLLAPSE: What's happening with the St Louis Blues? Last year's Stanley Cup Champions are a dismal 14-28-6 (34pts), last in the conference, 31st in the League, only Detroit (14-29-5, 33pts) is worse. Vladimir Tarasenko is second on the team with just 14 goals and 31 points in 48 games. The dream duo of Pietrangelo (-22) and Shattenkirk (-17) just isn't what it used to be anymore. Goaltending has also been an issue; Binnington is just 7-17-6 and Allen is 4-12-0. Ville Husso, in just 4 games, is 3-0-0.

BUFFALO'S NYLANDER DONE FOR SEASON: Chicago Blackhawk forward Alex Nylander is out for the season with a Seperated Shoulder. If the Blackhawks (24-18-6) make the playoffs, he will likely return in time for the first round. Nylander had 6 goals and 19 points in 44 games at the time of his injury

                                January Storylines:

January wasn't particularly kind to the Toronto Maple Leafs. A record of 7-5-1 isn't an ideal Record, especially the last 10 games - they're just 5-5-0. Anton Khduobin is struggling in net, and the Leafs vaunted offense just become a desert. Dubas may consider a shakeup moving forward in order to maintain competitiveness.

                                Current Injury Report:
