    Summary:
Curses, fouls, bookings, tackles, screaming, and football. The game devolved quickly as bottom table Catania came to San Siro and let Milan know from the get go that they would not be pushed around. In the 5', El Shaarawy broke free on a counter break and was taken town violently by a Gomez in the box. The yellow card was given and the screaming match began between both teams. A clearly flustered El Shaarawy missed the ensuing penalty kick badly but it wouldn't matter as De Jong would get even by scoring a strike from way outside the box soon after. Catania would continue to bully Milan, throwing elbows and challenging every ball with force. This was the type of game that Milan hadn't played all year, and it clearly left them flustered as striker Djebbour would get a couple of easy chances on goal that he just couldn't convert for Catania. The second half would find Milan fighting back just as hard, and this allowed for some questionable play as well. An easy clearance by the keeper turned ugly as Boateng mugged Sciacca causing the ball to bounce free. No call by the referee allowed Allen to scoop up the loose ball and put it into the net for the 2-0 lead by Milan. Ultimately the game would end 3-1 as Martinho and Muntari would add goals for their respective teams, but the chippy attitudes would carry on after the match as player continued to yell at each other across the pitch. Either way, Milan wins another one and has not lost a match since early December of last year.

The first half of the season is over, and each team has played each other once. Several themes have arisen now that half the season is over. The first is that Juventus has been the class of Serie A for the second year in a row and continues to lead the pack with stellar play. They have all the tools, a solid back line, a strong midfield, and excellent offensive play. Rivals Inter and Milan are in second and third place respectively as both teams have been on an excellent run as of late. Here is a look at the rest of the standings so far.

Rumors abound about the destination of various players in the January transfer window. These moves can make or break a club. Who will be buyers? Who will be sellers? Well, one seller was thought to be AC Milan as their owner went on a tirade recently and tried to sell one of their best players, Alvin Allen to Bayern Munich. However, Allen declined and we have been wondering about the impact of his refusal. Well now that Milan has rocketed up the table on a winning streak, it looks as if Milan will now be buyers as rumors are connecting 24 year old striker Etxaniz from Athletic Bilbao to them. Not to be out done, Inter is looking for some help of their own. De Bruyne is rumored to be on the outs at Chelsea and Inter may be in line to recruit him for their club. Price seems to be the only barrier at this point as rumors put Inter and Chelsea several million apart on agreement on a transfer fee.

Lastly we'll take a look at the league leaders halfway through the season:

Re: Mr. Second Place: An Autobiographical Tale of Alvin Allen (Fifa 13)

“So what’s all this I’m hearing about you trying to get more money?” Gabby asked teasingly over the phone.
“I’m serious, Gabby, I really like it here at Milan,” I replied. “Besides, it was A.T. who said I should hold the press conference. He’s really media savvy.”
“Well, I think you have more than enough money as it is. I’m here eating ramen noodles while you’re probably sipping on that wine you love so much.”
I stared at my empty glass and laughed to myself. “You’re something else. Don’t act like you’re so broke.”
“I’m just a poor news reporter looking for her next story. Speaking of which, I have a deadline to meet on my next story. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.” I said regretfully as I hung up the phone. Gabby and I had grown closer since our meeting in Chicago a while ago. We found ourselves talking a lot more recently. I wasn’t ready for an official relationship, but I had to admit it was nice to have someone to talk to on those lonely days. I had a rare day off and I was using it to lounge around my villa with absolutely nothing to do. The phone rang again. I grabbed it without checking who it was, figuring it was Gabby.
“Calling back so soon?” I answered.
“Nipote, why, we haven’t talked in a while,” a familiar voice answered.
“Leo, what is it? I’m busy.”
“No you’re not,” he laughed, “If I know you, you’re just lunging around drinking wine.”
I laughed in spite of my annoyance. “Of course, Leo, what’s up?”
“Well, because of your success with that reporter, we wanted to go ahead and run something by you. Come on down to the Valente Corp. offices in downtown Milan and we’ll talk over some things.”
“Leo,” I said harshly, “I’m not going to work for you.”
“I know, I know Alvin,” he grumbled, “This isn’t about that. I have a sponsorship opportunity for you. Alton will be here as well. Come on down.”
After I hung up, I got myself together, hopped on my Ducati, and rode into town at Valente Corp. I was escorted to a meeting room with large windows and a beautifully carved conference table in the center of the room. I sat at one of the many comfy leather chairs and awaited Leo and my brother. They arrived soon after, but accompanying them was none other than the strange Madam Apuzzo, complete with her large sunglasses and not to mention her bodyguards. They all sat down, with the Madam sitting at the head of the table and Leo and A.T. sitting on either side. It looked like it was time to get down to business.
“Alvin, I’m sure you remember Madam Apuzzo,” Leo said as he introduced us. She tilted her head acknowledgement to my presence.
“Pleasure, of course,” I responded sarcastically. “Really, Leo, what are we into here?”
“I’m sure you remember Genneskunde Pharmaceuticals from your time at Reggina, correct?” A.T. responded, “Well, Madam Apuzzo is on their senior board and she convinced them to have you as part of their next endeavor.”
“An athlete sponsored by a pharmaceutical company?” I laughed, “Aren’t you a little worried about the implications of that?”
To my surprise it was Madam Apuzzo who spoke, “Mr. Allen, we will be creating a new sporting supplement that you will be promoting.”
“Whoa, doping isn’t a part of my training regiment,” I responded forcefully.
“Alvin, it’s just a supplement that is completely legal under FIFA guidelines,” A.T. calmly replied.
“Yes, and you will take our newest product mainstream,” Leo continued.
I got quiet and thought about my options. They weren’t asking me to do anything illegal, and I already took some supplements as a part of my daily workout routine with the team. However, it seemed whenever Leo was involved there was always a catch. I looked at each person in the room and smiled.
“So what does it do, exactly?”
The Madam smiled behind those dark glasses as A.T. came up to shake my hand.
            “I thought you’d never ask.”

                Summary:
A cold rain drenched the field at San Siro Stadium making this match between a couple of top 5 teams in Seire A a slow, messy affair. The loan goal of the match came in the 29' as Abate would send in a cross from the wing that Boateng would head home. Neither team could generate much offense after that. One bright spot for Milan was the play of Brkic, who continues to shine in recent weeks. He has only given up 4 goals on this long winning streak for Milan, which after this win was pushed to 8 across all competitions.

                  Summary:
This thrilling match between two good teams could not be decided in regulation. Milan decided to rest most of their starters after a tough match against Atalanta just 3 days prior, but they came ready nonetheless as a prepared Palermo team tried to take them down at home. The game would get off to a hot start as Milan pressed forward up the wings with pressure. Crosses kept coming in, but were turned away by strong play by the Palermo back line. Finally in the 21' Milan broke through on one as none other than Serie A assist leader El Shaarawy sent in a beautiful ball that found Emanuelson in the box for a crisp header to the corner for the first goal of the match. Palermo would strike back strongly with good play up front by their two strikers, Hernandez and Maiga. Hernandez would soon find Viola cutting inside to the box, drawing the defense towards him. Viola would lay it off back outside for Maiga who was following. He would send in a cracking right footer that would just beat Brkic diving to his left. Palermo had evened up the match at 1-1 at the end of the first half. Milan and Palermo would trade shots throughout the second half, but stellar play by Brkic and Ujakani prevented any shot on target from heading thorugh, including an amazing strike by Palermo's Acquah late in regulation. He burst free through the middle and sent in a long shot from outside the box that curled up to his left. Brkic left his feet and with a full extension of his body, barely got a hand on the ball to push it wide. The match would head into extra time. The first extra time would be uneventful with sloppy, tired play in the midfield by both clubs. The second half was more of the same, until who other than Alvin Allen turned the tide with a pass from Montolivo just on the outskirts of Palermo's box. Allen would make a quick turn and before Ujakani could react, poke a quick finesse ball into the bottom corner, near post. That would prove the game winner as Milan would escape and advance to the next round of the cup, 2-1.

Notable End of Window Transfers in Serie A
                    by Pete Patterson

Look who's coming to AC Milan

We wrap up our analysis of the transfer window by looking in at Serie A in Italy. Well it looks like the rumors about Milan selling members of their squad were largely unfounded as the team turned around and made one of the biggest spalshes in the market by buying coveted midfielder Paulinho from Atletico Madrid for a reported 24.5 million dollars and 140K in wages. The strong midfielder will be added to an already deep midfield with players such as de Jong and Boateng already on the squad. With the wages Paulinho is rumored to be making, it seems as though he will be inserted into the starting lineup immediately.
As far as the earlier speculation that striker Etxaniz was also on his way to Milan, it looks as if the refusal by Allen to leave was the main reason talks broke between both sides. Not that the young striker didn't have many offers, mind you. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid both came in with offers to AC Milan that were accepted, but they were rebuffed, even after it was rumored they were offering wages in the 100K range for the young player. That is a lot of money to turn down for such a young player, but if he keeps playing at a stellar level, Milan may have to be the ones to break the bank for this player if they want to keep his services.

De Bruyne is ready to dominate for Inter

AC Milan wasn't the only team to make a splash this January. Their rivals Inter finalized their deal with midfielder De Bruyne from Chelsea for a reported 24 million dollars. We examined this deal in depth in our Premier League analysis, but to reiterate this signing was a steal for Inter. They now have the youth and depth they were looking for in their midfield. De Bruyne will be a magnificent player for that club. Both of these clubs will soon be able to pit their new signings against each other as they have both been drawn for the semifinal round of the Coppa Italia.
The last significant signing in Serie A was the moving of goalkeeper Frison from Cagliari to Napoli for 9 million dollars.. Napoli has struggled as of late, floundering around midtable for the last several weeks now. Hopefully by shoring up their deficiencies on their backend they can attempt to make the long climb back into respectability. This is a great move by Cagliari as they were able to sell their backup keeper for a significant amount of money, preparing them to make some good moves next year. Their starting keeper Agazzi is performing at an extremely high level, with 7 clean sheets already this year. By adding some more capital, they hope to propel themselves for a better run than the mid table finish they expect to have this year. That will wrap up this years report on the January transfer window for Serie A.

                      Summary:
Inconsistent is the term being thrown around by Roma fans right now. The club just can't seem to get it together, at times looking like the best team in Serie A, and other times losing to bottom of the barrel clubs that could possibly be relegated. Well this match they would have their fill of a good team coming to town in Milan, and Roma definitely played up to the level of their competition. The game began with Roma on the offensive. They would get their chances early, as both Bojan and De Rossi would get good looks on net, but Brkic was able to push both away on great diving saves. This wouldn't last however, as Roma would finally break through. Rodrigo would send in a beautiful pass from about 30 yards out that he lobbed right over the top of Mexes head into Bradley who finessed it right into the corner of the net. Roma would find themselves up 1-0 in the 57' and would hold onto that lead for the entirety of the match, except in the 90' when Allen stepped up in a big way. Milan finally got their chance late, pushing forward with pace. Allen took the ball right into the heart of Roma's back line and hit a give and go with Emanuelson into the box. He hit a strike with his left foot into the top corner for the game tying goal. It was heartbreak for Roma once again as Milan would steal 1 point.

Once again, the city of Milan finds itself split with fans draped in red and black or black and blue. The Milan Derby finds itself in another important competition. This time it will be the semifinals of the Coppa Nazionale which will give us the wonderful chance of seeing these two teams compete in 2 legs for bragging rights and the chance to head to the finals. Although both teams called San Siro their home, it would be Milan who were the designated home team for this match, while Inter found themselves on the visitors side.
The game would begin with both teams at a stalemate in the middle of the pitch. The midfield play was strong amongst both teams, with swift tackles and short passing leading the way early in the match. Inter would finally get its chance as Constant would charge in and make a late tackle on De Bruyne that the referee would call a foul. The free kick would be taken by Sneijder fromabout 25 yards out slightly off center towards the right side of the pitch. A wall of 4 Milan players stood in front as Sneijder came forward. The ball made an audible thud off his foot as it bent around the right side of the wall. Brkic would dive as the ball clanged off the near post and ricocheted right to Longo who had a wide open shot on goal. Longo was clearly surprised at his good fortune and put too much power behind his rebound, sending it way over the bar. He put his hands on his head in disbelief, and Milan escaped the early chance from Inter.
Milan would make them pay on the restart, pushing forward with pace up the left wing. Montolivo would find Allen in the middle, and he would weave past Gargano and hit Boateng moving up to his right. Boateng would give it right back to Allen on the give and go, and Allen would take an ambitious shot, firing a left footer from about 30 yards out. The ball sailed right to Handanovic, but he was caught off guard by the heat behind the shot and deflected it away to his right instead of grabbing the ball. De Jong would sprint inside as Handanovic and Ranocchia would try to get to the bouning ball. De Jong would win the foot race, sliding in and pushing the ball into the bottom corner of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 15’.

de Jong slides in just past Handanovic for the early score

It would be all Milan from this point, creating chances on the offensive end as Allen and Robinho would get a couple of excellent looks set up by the assist machine El Shaarawy, who was dominating Inter from the left side. However, since that first mistake, Handanovic was on fire, rejecting the Milan attempts on goal with authority. Off one of these attempts on a long attacking sequence by Milan, Handanovic would see De Bruyne rushing up the right side. He would throw it out to him, and off Inter went on the counter attack. De Bruyne would find Destro just outside the penalty area, drawing Bonera with him. Destro would give back to De Bruyne who would send in the one timed cross into a streaking Longo. Longo would hit a diving header, but it would sail just wide of the net. This was becoming a game of missed chances, as Handanovic would have 9 saves at the half, while Inter woud miss 2 big chances of their own.
The second half would get started, and it would be all Milan as they got started. De Jong and El Shaarway would go to work once again on the left side, as De Bruyne for all his offensive prowess just couldn’t keep up with the Italian star. On one of these attempts, El Shaarawy would cut inside, spin around Juan Jesus and his a right footed finesse shot, but the ball would sail just wide of the net past a diving Handanovic. On the restarted goal kick, Milan would once again get control, and Allen would push up the middle. He would get tackled just outside the penalty area by an anxious Nicu for a free kick attempt. El Shaaway would take the shot and put it over the top of the net for another missed shot for Milan.
The only remaining chance for Inter came late in the match on a counter attack led by Obi up the left wing. He would give to Hernandez in the middle, who would look for Countinho back out wide. A freshly subbed Palacio would get the ball on a nice short cross inside and would volley it straight at Brkic who would make the tough save. The ball would be deflected to Hernandez who would take a shot of his own, but Brkic would stand strong and snatch the strike out of midair for another great save. With only a shot time remaining in the match, Milan turned down the attack and took on a defensive posture, passing the ball around and running the clock out. The 1st leg of this semifinal match would end with a 1-0 victory for Milan. Milan can take solace in the fact that Inter did not get any away goals in this match, but they have to feel like they missed an opportunity to really bury their opponent. On the other hand, Inter played well offensively, but their back line really needs to improve if they are going to stave off a Milan attack that is sure to be refined for the 2nd leg.

                          Summary:
A league match against Sampdoria would provide a nice warm up before the team needed to travel for their upcoming Europa league match. Sampdoria keeper Falcone would have a rough go of it as Milan was able to beat him from every angle. The blowout would begin early as Allen would intercept a clearance ball and put it away into the corner easily in the 8'. Soon after the restart, Carmona and Allen would get a 2 on 1 on a breakaway against Falcone. Allen would bait the keeper his way, and then send it over to Carmona for a sweaty finish in the 11'. Paulinho would get his first goal with Milan on a headed strike off a cross sent in by El Shaarawy. Sampdoria would finally get their own goal off a pass by Pozzi to Ghilas. Ghilas would make an excellent turn, losing his defender and putting a strike past Brkic. It was a small blip on an otherwise flawless performance, as El Shaarawy and Carmona would both add goals late to put the game well out of reach.

The scene was set for a battle in Sweden as red hot AC Milan travels to town for their season debut in the UEFA Europa League against IFK Goteburg. Goteburg had to come through a tough group competition and their reward is a game against a team that is tearing up Italian Serie A football at the moment. Does Goteburg stand any chance against them?
They would answer that question early, as Johansson would break free in the middle after giving constant a shake. He would lob it over the top to Soder, who would volley the ball home in the 9’ past Brkic for the opening goal. Milan looked shell-shocked as Goteburg came out immediately with pace and showed Milan that they weren’t afraid of them. In fact, Milan spent most of the first half on their heels as Soder would once again control the ball in the middle, hitting a cutting Ericsson in stride where he would push the ball just wide of the target.
Milan would finally get a couple runs in before the end of the half. The first would be pushed up the wing by El Shaarawy as he would get loose from Borkrath and make some space on that side. He would give to Paulinho back inside, who would give and go and give it right back to El Shaarawy. He would cross it inside to de Jong who would get a head on the ball, but it would be knocked away by a diving Alvbage. The rebound by Allen was off target as it came right back at the keeper for the easy save. Allen would get another chance, this time on a breakaway counter attack with Boateng. With one man to beat, Allen would find Boateng to his right with the pass ahead, but Boateng would take the shot and put the ball way over the crossbar. The half would end with Goteburg holding a 1-0 lead relatively easily.

Soder puts Goteburg ahead in the 9'

Milan came out in the second half with renewed energy, determined to beat back the confident Swedish side. Carmona would get things started with a long build up on the left, giving to Paulinho in the middle. Paulinho would give it to Allen, who would send it back out on a one timed pass back to Boateng just inside the penalty area. He would shoot the ball straight to Alvbage, who would cover it easily. Alvbage would get up quickly and throw the ball out wide to Hysen and off Goteburg went on the counter attack. The Milan midfield got caught too far upfield, and off Hysen went to the races. He would pass off to Milanov inside and he would quickly lob the ball to Soder just ahead of him. Soder would get behind the backline, and send in a rocket right footer into the upper left corner of the net way out of Brkic’s reach as he was cheating to the near post. Goteburg would find themselves up 2-0, as Milan sat back stunned.
Goteburg was content to hold on to their lead, as they dropped into a defensive shell and played possession football for the remainder of the game. The minutes fell off the clock as Milan tried to pressure Goteburg into a mistake, but their side was very technically sound with good passes and little to no mistakes made. However, Milan would finally get a chance as Gerzic would try to force a ball to Soder that was poked away by a freshly subbed Montolivo. Montolivo would take the ball and push up with pace in the middle of the field. He would get it out wide to Carmona who would cut back inside, weaving and switching with Montolivo. As Carmona came inside, he would pass with his outside foot to Montolivo out wide who now had a step on Lund. Montolivo would cross the ball inside into Allen who would head the ball into the corner of the net for the goal.
Goteburg would take the ball on the restart and hold the ball for the rest of the match. The clock would expire on Milan as they go down surprisingly to Goteburg in the first leg of this knockout round. The only positive they can take away is that they got a late away goal to close the gap headed into the second leg. Goteburg should be very pleased with the performance they put forward. If they play like this again, they should look to make a great run in this Europa League.

                                Summary:
Alvin Allen has been the catalyst that has propelled Milan to extraordinary heights as we've reached the midway point of the season. He has been focused an disciplined, even in the most stressful times. Milan would onceagain find itself needing his heroics as Catania looked to hold serve at their home stadium. Allen would get things started with a goal in the 34', cutting away from Rolin in the middle and sending a right footer into the corner for the first goal. Catania would answer back off the restart as Gomez would get free and hit a nice back heel ball to Barrientos who would send home the equalizer. Just before the half, El Shaarawy would get loose on the break and send forward a through pass that would find Allen all alone with Andujar 1 on 1. Andujar waited to long to charge out, and Allen tapped home the finesse right footer low and to the keeper's left for the easy goal. The game would continue at a deadlock, until Barrientos would once again even the match off a bad clearance that he would curl past Brkic in the 89'. With little time remaining, Constant would find himself with the ball up the wing. He would drive forward pulling the defense his way, leaving Allen wide open in the middle outside the penalty area. The pass would come inside, and Allen would one time a rocket off his favored left foot into the corner in the 90' for the winning goal, capping off his hat trick. Milan racks up another win, 3-2 over Catania.
