Re: 2010 Recruiting Thread
Antone Smith was so overrated out of HS it wasn't even funny. Even his senior year he was the second best back on the team behind Jermaine Thomas.Comment

If I was a running back coming out of high school, south carolina would be one of the last schools I'd look at..Comment

2. According to Scout Smith "ran for 2,814 yards and 44 touchdowns in 12 games as a senior." I somehow doubt that Jermaine Thomas ran for 3,000 yards and 50 TDs.Comment

Re: 2010 Recruiting Thread
And to be fair FSU has kinda been a talent graveyard as of late.WUSTLComment

1. I'm going to stick with Eddie Gran's evaluations over your evaluation. Florida State has been a running back graveyard all decade long.
2. According to Scout Smith "ran for 2,814 yards and 44 touchdowns in 12 games as a senior." I somehow doubt that Jermaine Thomas ran for 3,000 yards and 50 TDs.
Antone Smith never had any sort of field vision to go with his speed. Until his senior season he struggled running between the tackles. At best he should have been a lower 4* recruit, not a 5*. As such he was in fact highly overrated. I'd actually go as far as to say if he was still at FSU he'd be behind Jermaine Thomas, Lonnie Pryor, and Chris Thompson on the depth chart. Hell he wouldn't have even started his senior year if Juco RB Tavares Pressley hadn't torn his ACL.Comment

I thought you were talking about his senior year of high school.

1. In the post Mark Richt era, every single FSU offensive recruit has been massively overrated and every coach in the country was duped
2. In the post Mark Richt era, FSU's coaching has sucked.Comment

Re: 2010 Recruiting Thread
2001-2006 the offensive coaches were awful. 2007-present FSU has acquired some of the best in the business.
Looking at the recruits from 2002-2007 the talent was there, the character concerns were as well.
2002
Lorenzo Booker - Overrated, probably would have been better off at USC, if he would have even seen the field behind Reggie Bush and LenDale White.
Leon Washington - Had a tremendous Junior year where he would have been a 1000 yard rusher if not for an injury.
Chris Davis - Never the same player after an ACL injury.
Chauncey Stovall - Was All ACC as a senior.
Thomas Clayton -Transferred to KSU
Lorne Sam - Brought in because of his talented brother PK, never very good, transferred to UTEP with Fred Rouse.
Wyatt Sexton - Looked promising as a RS-Sophomore before Lyme disease ended his career.
Cory Niblock - 2* OL who played above that, as in he played like a 3*
2003
Really nothing to write home about in offensive recruiting. 4* OL John Frady was injury prone, 3* OL Mario Henderson bloomed into an excellent player, and 3* ATH Joslin Shaw was a career backup.
2004
Headlined by Xavier Lee who had all of the physical talent in the world but the work ethic of a sloth. He was also a locker room cancer. Drew Weatherford was an Elite 11 QB who had a good freshman year but then regressed. Once Fisher came on board he had a solid Junior year throwing only 1 INT in the regular season before losing his job to Christian Ponder. Jamaal Edwards was a Rivals 100 RB who just sucked and never saw the field under any coaching staff. There were two 4* WRs in Greg Carr who had a good career but was misused in the offense and Kenny O'Neal who preferred Weed over football. After transferring he was a 5* Juco recruit who bombed at Tennessee, he did have world class speed but no hands. DeCody Fagg was also part of this class and had the type of career I'd expect a 3* to have, he would likely be in the NFL had he not blown out his knee at the Combine. The OL had several recruits, none of whom panned out for various reasons, mostly injuries.
2005
We discussed Antone Smith. Fred Rouse was a head case and would have been a head case anywhere he went. If he didn't get the ball he literally threw temper tantrums on the sidelines. Richard Goodman and Rod Owens were 3* WRs in this class, Goodman was a practice All American and Owens developed into an All-ACC player. RB Russell Ball was a tragic story of a kid who blew out both knees. Matt Dunham was a helluva prospect who had Xavier Lee's work ethic.
2006
Christian Ponder is the stud of this class and under Jimbo Fisher has developed into one of the best QBs in America. RB Seddrick Holliday was a Lincoln HS signing brought in to help secure Brandon Paul in 2007. WR Preston Parker had a sensational sophomore year but was a head case who was thrown off the team. WR Damon McDaniel was sought after but had family issues at home. Both of these kids should have RS'd, but Jeff Bowden burned through that when they were Freshmen for very limited playing time. McDaniel transferred to West Virginia and then disappeared. 4* Caz Piurowski was moved between TE and OL early on, he looked good as a senior before a season ending injury. 5* TE Brandon Warren was a Freshman AA who shot himself in the foot when he left for UT. Former OL coach Mark McHale brought in a bunch of zone blocking scrubs who were run off the team by Rick Trickett, only Daron Rose had talent but flunked out of school. RB Marcus Sims showed promise at FB but had big fumbled, including one that basically cost FSU the ACC Championship in 2008 vs. Georgia Tech, spent last season at North Alabama. D'Vontrey Richardson was also in this class and couldn't beat out Ponder for the job, now plays pro baseball.
These were the recruits under Jeff Bowden. Yes there was talent but with the exception of Christian Ponder wherever there was real talent there was also a real head case.Comment

Re: 2010 Recruiting Thread
Oops forgot 2007, which shows the difference in the coaching staffs.
Jeff Bowden recruits
Cameron Wade has been a waste of a scholarship who will not be around in 2010. OL Will Furlong got hurt and transferred to North Alabama.
Jimbo Fisher recruits
Rodney Hudson was a WV commitment who followed Rick Trickett to FSU, he was a 2nd Team AA last year and is a likely 1st Round pick in 2011. Bert Reed was flipped from UF and has been a solid slot WR. Brandon Paul didn't work out for personal reasons. WR Taiwan Easterling was a late, late signing who has become a solid WR. OL Antwan Greenlee has had severe injury problems and will likely never beat out Zebrie Sanders or Andrew Datko for much PT. OL A.J. Ganguzza is waiting for Ryan McMahon to graduate (didn't include him earlier because he was recruited as a DT who Rick Trickett has turned into a very good center with an NFL future). OL Anthony Grosso transferred to Delaware after it was clear he wasn't cut out for FBS football, he quit at UD too.
After the new staff came in on offense the level of talent has improved dramatically with all of the starters except Ponder being new staff recruits.Comment

Re: 2010 Recruiting Thread
Notable recruits coming to Marshall, if anyone is curious:
Brian Robinson-DB-4 Stars
Travis Bell-DB-3 Stars
Trevor Black-LB-3 Stars
Antwon Chisolm-ATH-3 Stars
Fred Pickett-Wr_3 Stars
Zach Dunston-ATH-3 Stars
Raheem Waiters-WR-3 Stars
Darius Millines-WR-3 Stars
Plus several other 2 Stars. We've stolen the top recruit(per espn) in West Virginia's class, plus 2 or 3 other recruits of theirs.
On top of that, we have another high profile recruiting trip coming up, so expect more 3 and 4 star commits from that. Rumors of a 4 Star QB committing up here as well.

UT HC Dooley(still sounds weird to me) and Lance Thompson will be in-home with Ambles today. Ambles has pretty much said that this in-home will determine whether he will remain committed or not.Comment
