Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows

The Big East’s presidents and chancellors discussed but did not approve a proposal that would have increased the league’s exit fee to between about $17 million and $20 million, more than three times the current amount, during the league’s Oct. 2 meeting, according to league documents obtained by CBSSports.com.

Give commissioner John Marinatto credit; at least he tried to make it tougher for teams to leave the league.

The proposed new exit amount was for $5 million plus “150 percent of the gross revenues received by a departing team in its final year in the league.” Those revenues vary by school but are estimated between $8 million and $10 million annually.

The league’s current withdrawal fee is $5 million, with 27 months notice required.

In the Oct. 2 meeting, the league’s presidents and chancellors also were scheduled to continue dialogue about “potential legal strategies in the wake of the departures of Pittsburgh and Syracuse.”

The refusal of the presidents and chancellors to increase the exit fee is another challenge to the league trying to survive the departure of TCU, Pittsburgh and Syracuse and with the possibility of other members leaving to other conferences.

Four days before the Oct. 2 meeting, Marinatto sent an email to league presidents and chancellors

In the email, obtained by CBSSports.com, Marinatto wrote:

“The Big East’s media rights outlook remains optimistic as the Conference continues to be a vital and attractive media rights property heading into our scheduled September 2012 ESPN discussions. Further, we will provide you with an updated report on our BCS automatic qualifying status, arguably our single most valuable asset – which, with the help of the addition of TCU, continues to place us in a solid position for the upcoming cycle.”

Four days after the Oct. 2 meeting at Georgetown, TCU received an invitation to the Big 12 and notified the Big East it likely would accept the invitation. TCU officially was accepted into the Big 12 on Monday.

Marinatto’s email also touched on the league’s uncertain future. He wrote:

“The most important issue for us to focus on, however, is the future of the Conference and specifically how we can stabilize our situation in order to convey a level of comfort and security to any potential new members and provide them some assurances about their future with us. Toward this end and per our football school discussion (Sept. 21) in New York City, we have added a new agenda item to discuss a proposed bylaw amendment in the form of the attached regarding our current withdrawal clause.”

It's unknown if the proposed new exit agreement also would require 27 months' notice.

Marinatto’s email also to league leaders indicated that the Big East "will also be prepared to discuss potential legal strategies in the wake of the departures of Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

"The basketball factions were adamant about not adding anyone, while the football faction argued that if the Big East is going to survive as a BCS conference, whose champion gained automatic entry to a BCS bowl it is imperative for Boise State, with its high national ranking was a necessity for survival."

So we're down to two people who want to Big East to survive as a football conference, the idiot commish and possibly the AD of USF who would most likely come crawling back to the C-USA when it's all said and done.

Also in the article the Big East hired as the director of basketball the guy that UConn just fired as their director of basketball.

The Basketball Schools + USF are ruining everything.

I can't believe the USF Pres + AD are so up in arms over UCF coming in and most likely doing a better job than the Bulls.

Yeah, looking like the Catholic League is on a holy inquisition to purge the Big East of all the heathens.

It is going to be one hell of a mess when the football schools realize the writing on the wall and start approaching other institutions about creating a brand new conference.

This is so ****ing ********. WVU needs to get the hell out of the conference. If there is any hope for the Big East, Boise State is a must-add, yet the catholic ADs and others are idiotically opposing this.

You mean is. Their football conference hasn't amounted to anything in a decade when Miami was in national title games.

I think it's high time the Big 12 invite Louisville and West Virginia. The problem is that WVU would just wait on the SEC. They know they have the leverage.

Ideally, I would like to keep Mizzou and add WVU and L'Ville, but seeing as one of those first two probably won't be here, the 12th slot could be competitive. Gotta think Cincinnati would be up there on the list. I've heard that BYU is pretty much off the Big 12 radar, although I think they'd be a solid add.

I would just like to point out that I said the Football schools needed to break away from the basketball schools as soon as this madness started a year ago. I believe I was also ridiculed for saying it.

I am so happy Syracuse got out of that mess.

Not sure why you guys think the Big 12 will go back to 12. The way their current deal works, the schools would probably lose money by going up to 12. I'd imagine they may try and go to 12 again right before they have to negotiate a new tv deal (since a conf. championship game would drive the price up a bit), but as of right now, I don't think there's any incentive to do so.

I would see UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, and Cincinatti joining together to try and make a new conference (if UConn doesn't get into the ACC like they want). USF would have to deal with UCF joining to be included, I think. USF would have to at that point, or go to C-USA. That's 6 schools. They might try and get the service academies to get to 9. That's enough for a conference. They may try to get Boise St. to join, but without the automatic bid from the Big East, Boise St. would have a tougher choice than joining an already-established BCS conference.

If the football schools leave, they have to reapply to the BCS per the BCS guidelines. If I'm the C-USA and MWC, I go forward with the BCS play-in game idea and see if you can steal the auto bid from a weakened BE conference.

Now, that being said, still not a big fan of Boise to the Big East. Imo, Boise adds a good football team, and that's all. They don't bring in a great fanbase, media market, prestige, money, academics, or any other good sport. It's a good football team, and that's it. It was a great move for the MWC because, at the time, it got them one step closer to AQ status (before they lost Utah, BYU, and TCU). But for anyone else, I just don't see why.

Nearly every conference has a team that is out there proximity wise.

BC to Miami? That's the same distance as TCU to Rutgers.

How much fun do you think it is for Louisana Tech having to go to Hawaii?

But I agree with you it would be nice to have a conference where the teams are in near proximity of each other.
