Had no idea that the Athletic Department at Maryland was in such shambles. Wow.

Personally, I love that Maryland is going to be a more basketball centered school. Indiana has some company now.

Plus, I could see Maryland and Penn State developing a good football rivalry for the next few years.

The ACC is probably about to be poached and left for dead. It will be the new Big East/C-USA 2.0, if it survives at all. Swofford and co. shall reap what they started sowing 10 years ago.

It is kind of sad, though. College football has clearly become a big business. There is no way to deny that anymore.

One can only hope that happens. ACC though is looking to add UCONN, maybe also start down the Big East route and add more basketball only school.

Yea, Maryland athletics department has been a mess for awhile. That's why they ran off Fridgen. They needed butts in seats and while he was very competitive on the field, he didn't bring an exciting brand of football. Maryland is doing what they have to. It sucks to see them leave the ACC, because they have been great partners to the league, but finanical mismanagement (by NC State's current AD and administration Debbie Yow who insisted over a huge stadium expansion with luxury suites, with only 1/3 sold) put them in this spot.

Now, addressing the narritive about the ACC falling apart. They aren't as stable, but they won't hurt as long as they have Duke/UNC B-Ball and Florida State football. I think this is why they will FIGHT Maryland for every penny they can get to send a clear message to Florida State, that you may go, but you will pay for it. It might not be 50 million, but it probably will be north of 30 million for Maryland to get out. Florida State isn't in the same crisis that Maryland is in, so that helps.

Long term, I think that we are going to have to separate football and men's basketball leagues from everything else going forward. Because even with all this money these leagues are making, it makes no sense for Maryland tennis to visit Lincoln, Nebraska and those trips will eat up revenues these schools are making.

Wow, Maryland is only the 2nd school after South Carolina (left over the issues of parital qualifiers and high academic standards) to the leave the league.

Sucks to see them go but at this point everyone is doing what they have to do to make the most they can. They weren't making money off the ACC then why not try seeing how many tickets you can sell when OSU, Mich, PSU & Neb come to town.

As far as Bball they will still be in the 2nd tier of programs but will make more on the bottom line so that's a plus. Good move for them.

With the B1G expanding and the relationship they have with the Pac-12, it makes me wonder what the Pac's future expansion plans are.

Who knows. I know this wouldn't have happended if the B1G/Pac-12 alliance would have went forward like planned and the ACC didn't pick up Notre Dame with the 5 game schedule. That would have probably prevented these moves because both sides could get the extra tv value they wanted out of thoe marquee games every year. Pac-12 really doesn't have options that would be appealing to them west of Big 12 territory so I'd say they are staying at 12.

They could make a run at OU and the Pokies, but they just granted their tv rights to the Big 12 for the next 10 years, so they are locked in. Plus the Sugar Bowl alliance with the SEC just put them on stable ground.

This conference continues to show that it has zero commitment to football. Losing Maryland is no big deal, but adding UCONN? SMH

I'm excited. Not that I think we will contend for a conference championship anytime soon, but it will be excited to get to go to a game and see the OSU's and Michigan's of the world.

Plus, exposure to plenty of different teams. I think we are decent addition to the conference and looking forward to playing PSU yearly!

I won't miss Maryland, my experience with their fans (as a general group, I'm sure there are some good Maryland fans out there) is that they were classless. I cite my personal experience, my brother's personal experience, and the last Duke - Maryland basketball game I saw where the entire student section chanted "F*** You Scheyer" at senior guard Jon Scheyer.

As for the ACC being "poached", I don't see it. They'll get back up to 14 with UConn or Louisville and go from there at basically the same strength. With the Notre Dame alliance intact as well they're not in a terrible position. There's also at least one line of thought (i.e. collection of rumors) that the ACC has the biggest home run ball lined up of all the remaining conferences, potentially adding Notre Dame and Texas as full members simultaneously once the playoff replaces the BCS.

Put it this way, losing Maryland doesn't hurt the ACC one bit.
