    Week 1 Discussion

And now you know why Jimbo wasn't ever going to let Coley call plays at FSU.

    Helluva recruiter though.

      Re: Week 1 Discussion

Well, the defense right now looks a lot more improved over last year. That didn't look to be the case at the start of the game. But right now it is. Though, Louisville probably isn't the best test. This isn't the same Cardinal offense from last year.

However, Coley is destroying any chance of winning by running the ball 3 times and punting it over and over. Spread the field, Miami is a lot faster and getting open. Run some playaction and keep their defense honest. Right now Louisville is selling out on the run and Miami is letting them.

EDIT: That is the old Miami defense. This game has been a lot closer than I expected coming into this week. Figured Miami would be down double digits by halftime. Still don't have any confidence they come back.

Louisville taking Miami's manhood right now and making them like it...

Even though I knew this was coming, it is still frustrating to watch. If this is a preview of the rest of the year, then I won't be surprised if Golden is gone after this year. Guy has literally not improved a single thing over Shannan. Same exact record each season and no big wins.

Hmmm, the replay seemed to show he was still within the legal limit at the time of the pass. Don't remember the last time I ever even saw that penalty get called in a football game.

I can agree Miami's offensive play calling has been wtf, but I would be encouraged as a Miami fan. No more sanctions, playing competitively with what was a top 10 team last year with more talent across the board. Louisville is the better football team and that shouldn't be a surprise. Miami needs to build it's talent back up first and I believe Golden's recruiting rankings have been pretty good even while under sanctions?

The rankings have been jaded by a couple high guys. They need a lot better quality up front on both sides.

Kayaa will take his lumps but he's the best option and will get better. Coley's play calling will not.

I don't agree at all. I am surprised this game wasn't a blowout, but it is more because Louisville has been sloppy and not Miami's good play. Golden has had good recruiting classes, but he also came into a team full of high recruiting classes. These players are not progressing and getting any better under this staff. You can't win more than 7 or 8 games with a defense as poor as Miami's and again, it looks like it is going to be a bottom feeder in the conference.

Couple that with the fact that the play calling on offense was worse than anything I've seen including Whipple's offenses from a few years ago and this team has no bright spots about it. Golden has done absolutely nothing at all since he came to the program. He literally has the same exact record as Shannan each season in a much worse ACC. He has no big wins and Miami has pretty much lost by multiple possessions any time they play anyone of relevance. There is nothing to be excited about with this team.

I liked Golden when he was hired. Right now I don't really like him or this staff anymore. They've done nothing at all to improve Miami. I will give them credit for having no defense crack the top 100 since they have been here. That is pretty impressive to be that bad at your job.

This seems to be an issue with all of the major in-state teams, especially on the offensive side of the ball. No excuse not to have hosses in the front 7 on D though.

I know Miami had to deal with making changes due to injuries but did Kaaya beat out Heaps by alot? Any Cane followers got the inside scoop? I don't know that he could have been worse then Kaaya. Heaps has at least experience to bring to the table. And I know some coaches don't like to just throw in the one year 5th year guy, but Kaaya was not ready at all. He even got away with some balls he should have never thrown.

Starting a true frosh on the road and then coming out passing 5 of the first 6 downs was also puzzling. The play calling in general was real bad. Is Golden the offensive play caller as well? I would have just tried to get the ball in the hands of Duke right out of the gate. Coaches try to get to complicated. Get the ball in your hands of your best player as much as possible (Duke, Dorsett).

Also on the bad call screen pass, how in the world did the cards not get 12 men plus on the field+?. The commentary crew caught that they were getting guys on at the last second, but never really addressedthat. Really bad officials. Bad calls for both teams.

Gonna have to cede to your opinion here. I only watch Miami from a distance. I also understand what it's like to watch a team week in and week out and understand the difference between true progress and a lucky night. I can accept the cards fell right for Miami to have a decent showing tonight, plus I too like Golden so I'm sure that sways my opinions.

Outside of Perryman, you'd be hard pressed to find another starter on D that would start at FSU or UF . Maybe Chick and Tracey Howard, but those are reaches. Chick wouldn't start over ME Jr but if he could play LE he might. Howard would be behind PJ, Darby, Ramsey, and Nate. He may start at UF but VHIII has one Corner on lock and the youngins are highly rated and touted so it would be no guarantee.

Consider where Miami would be if Golden and his staff had even a little power in keeping kids at home in southern Florida. Louisville has FOURTEEN players from the city of Miami on their roster, and many of them absolutely killed the Hurricanes tonight (obviously not even including Bridgewater in the bowl game last year).

Golden has sabotaged his own tenure as coach by clinging to his buddy as defensive coordinator; same kind of nonsense helped bury Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. That combined with allllllll the talent he's let escape out of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, and they look dead in the water as a program.

Wait, we're pinning the talent getting out of Miami on the guy who chose to stick with the program through the disaster that has been Miami vs NCAA over the past 3/4 years? Couple Miami's sanctions with Charlie Strong's connections and a kid would be dumb not to have chose Louisville over Miami. IMO and again, this is from a distance, Miami's biggest problem sits in the schools front office. Fix that problem and maybe Miami can be Miami again, it won't be though until SHE is gone.

Understand the coach clinging point, watched Urban and RR both do it.

The NCAA cloud definitely played a factor, but both USC and Penn State were drilled with actual sanctions, and neither of them missed a beat in recruiting. I would argue that Golden's bigger problem in recruiting wasn't the NCAA; it was him and D'Onofrio preferring their old Philly/New Jersey stomping grounds as opposed to the uber-competitive goldmine they're sitting in in SoFla.

The biggest problem overall being that Golden simply isn't a great coach.
