It's not dim brother - it's just because they changed the tone mapping. It makes it to where the tv no longer clips in game mode only. In all other HDR modes the tv can only display detail up to 600 nits.

On the 2017 models you have to enable it to Low I believe. On 2016 models it must be enabled to high.

Here's what the 2016 OLEDS looked like before they changed the tone mapping with no Dynamic Contrast enabled:

Here's what they looked like after the recent "dim" update with Dynamic Contrast on high:

Only difference is the resolved detail in the clouds. After the new update with DC enabled the tv is no longer clipping all of that detail in the clouds cause it doesn't cut off at 700 nits peak brightness. Now the tv will attempt to show more detail than it's capable of - only in HDR game mode.

So you should have a superior image after the "dim" update so long as your TV is properly configured, and it's peak brightness should actually be higher if properly set.

      Re: Madden 18 and HDR

the reason I think madden HDR is implemented poorly (besides the dimming on the field) because whenever I disable HDR on my xbox while an HDr game is running and go back in game, the game reverts to SDR. turn HDR back on and most games go back to HDR.

in madden when doing that, madden goes into some weird rendering mode where some brightness filters appear to be applied like in accessibility settings. need to restart the game to fix it.

also in cutscenes during the game the lighting is actually brighter and more of what I would expect form HDR. as soon as you go back to real time gameplaY, dimness again.

      very weird.

I have noticed this same thing on PS4 with NBA2k18 and MLB the Show if you start the game with HDR enabled and turn it off without restarting the game it seems to still be some type of effect as if HDR is still on but its not, I thought it was because these games don't have a HDR turn off feature within the actual game but MLB the Show does have that feature so IDK the logic behind it.

I'm really enjoying Madden on the PS4 Pro 4k/HDR. Colors really pop and are vibrant. I think Madden suffers in dome games when there is no light source (sun) Night games are pretty good with the shine & glare off the helmets.

Yes! Simply, when Madden 18 is at the initial load screen with Tom Brady (before EA Sports logo comes up) ... it starts out looking like normal and then in about 5 seconds the screen flashes and you can clearly see that's when it goes into HDR mode (like all other HDR games do that I've seen on Xbox) but then with Madden 18 it flashes back to how it was or even dimmer perhaps. To me, there is clearly an issue.

This is the same thing I see on the load screen.

                  Re: Madden 18 and HDR

I found the answer to the problem and it works. On PS4 go to Settings>Video Outout Settings and change RGB to FULL. Take it off of AUTOMATIC. THIS INSTANTLY SOLVED the problem. All of the other settings should be on automatic with the exception of the RGB setting. Here is where I found the fix:

However, with the Madden 18 HDR update, the game got noticeably dim. I was able to alleviate that with the Contrast and Brightness settings in the game's settings, but it still doesn't look as it should imo.

I did notice since the HDR update that when on the title screen with Brady, it will look dark for 5 - 10 seconds, then it will flash and look incredible for about 5 seconds, and then flash back to how it looked before looking incredible. Does anyone else notice this?

This fix immediately solved the washed out visuals problem in Madden 18 using a PS4.

                      Re: Madden 18 and HDR

Been binge watching Jessica Jones for the last two days. Let's just say that HDR is dark. It was the same way with Iron First. The catch is, local dimming allows the picture to be much darker, but still clear. It also allows some light sources to be really bright without affecting the rest of the picture.

This was more obvious in Iron First, as I think that released with HDR in mind. nearly every scene had elements that show off the HDR effects, sometimes annoyingly so. Jessica Jones released ion 2015 without HDR, but had it added later. So there was very little blatant HDR promotion. Instead, it was just a darker version of the show, while still being even more precise in textures and such.

I've kind of come around to the idea that Madden's HDR is actually better than new are giving it credit for. It absolutely reduces the "pop" that many of us associate with Madden. But I played the Play Now LIVE version of the Chiefs and San Diego last night, and it was an interesting look at how Madden uses HDR. The filed was basically cut in half, one side dark and the other side sunny. Each quarter saw more of the field in shadow, but it all made sense. Once I stopped looking for something bright and amazing, I realized that instead it just had a very realistic texture to everything, and handled light and dark in more realistic ways.

Maybe I'm rationalizing. But I do know that when I went in search of better settings, like slider addict fixing some element of gameplay, that I just kept making the picture look worse and worse. Getting everything back to normal fixed everything, once I accepted that HDR meant a better picture in darker settings.

NBA2K18 still looks better, but I'm not convinced that it is representing HDR accurately. I thin it is just giving us what we are looking for, to look more like a video game. Plus, basketball is in a closed environment, with lights designed to really brighten the action. The lights in a football or baseball stadium never produce images as bright as a basketball or hockey arena.

With the settings correct and HDR working properly, as it is now on my PS4, all of what you said still applies. It’s just better and right. I have an LG OLED and playing the game with the RGB set to full and HDR on automatic was simply spectacular. Shadows and all.

You must run HDR in automatic on PS4 but have to change the RGB setting to FULL. Otherwise the HDR throttles down to an excessively dull and dim palette.

My LG OLED is calibrated and every source comes into it from one HDMI passed through my Anthem receiver with no additional processing or corrections applied. So that is not a factor. Look at my earlier post for the video clip on YouTube with the settings required to make HDR work properly on a PS4. This goes for both the standard and 4K varieties.
