Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
hahaha.. got me again..
but listen that was against a backup LT with no playing experience, and for some ridiculous reason Andy Reid kept leaving him on an island against whoever was lined up over there. that shouldn't happen against most LT's.. not sayin, just sayin..
as it is, I get sacked waaaay too much in madden. I always try to play from within the pocket and I'm always giving up cheap sacks that others don't because they just drop back 10 yards. I'm hoping those days are over.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
Ian - can you comment on this?
Basically what I am concerned about or looking to see if you can address is how will the other defenders react to the play. I have been very impressed by the way 2K8 handled this problem - specifically the way other defenders would combine with the QB's own momentum to make you essentially choose to run or pass but not retain the option to do either - at least not as long as you can have both options in Madden. I think previous Madden releases have used a speed cheat to control this - making almost any QB lame and slow out of the pocket, instead of having different defensive logic. Is that still how this is controlled?
In Madden games, once the QB gets to the outside, a skilled player can buy an inordinate amount of time to throw and can hold the ball waaaaaaay longer than a similar situation in 2K8 (or 2K5). This also leads to unrealistic rushing gains when the Madden defenders in zone defense fail to react to a running QB until he has past the LOS....
Other things that looked good:
I will see if I can answer some of your concerns, well one at least. I purposely waited until the T and DE engaged and ran outside in the CD build. From the shotgun I got outside a lot more than I liked. That's why I asked for it to set up faster. Ideally I'd like the DE/OLB's to be 1 step away from the QB as he bounces off his heels in his drop. They have to get up the field. I don't mind the QB stepping under and in that lane. The Ends did get off their blocks pretty quick once they saw me going outside so I did not have too much time. Most of the plays I had to throw on the run and they were all overthrown passes.
As far as Troy Smith I wouldn't worry about him at all, especially on deep passesArm was pretty damn weak in the CD build.

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
My original post was directed more towards the first play in that clip. It looks like the defender falls for the (very odd) spin by the ball carrier, slips, and is blocked down and taken out of the play.
But I see what you are getting at. However earlier in the 2nd play the ball carrier runs right next to the engaged player and could have easily been tackled (or atleast slowed down a little) had the defender stuck his arm out to grab him. Like Valdarez asked will we be able to do something like this or will we have to completely break away from the block, turn up field, and try to make the tackle?
BTW, apex, the monotone-ness is killing me.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
I think Ian did that to demostrate that the roll and chuck is done for Madden 10, and QBs will get the best protection while inside of the pocket.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
IMO, if the defender would have tackled the ball carrier it would have been highly unrealistic. It's very hard to take down a ball carrier from the side while you're engaged, add on top of that the fact you're running. I agree, sticking on arm out there would be a nice animation in that instant even if he is just "grasping" at air.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
i think the video should have showed the whole team blocking not just one player. The reason i say that is because the person who was doing the video could have went to replay and choose the best person blocking on that play. What about the rest of the team.
What about the pocket i would like to see that develop and everything.Comment

That is exactly what I wanted to hear...it has bugged me to no end to see the previous games over and over turn into the "roll-and-chuck" offense. If that is truly tuned to force people to realize it is not a very good idea to do on every play then I will be a seriously happy camper!
Much appreciated LB...Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
Hmm...again, seems obvious to me, but maybe I'm not explaining it well. See attached image...

In real life, unless that guy is getting held, there is no reason why he can't chase after the ballcarrier after he's ran past him. Instead he's trapped in a really long animation...without the ability to branch out or 'steer', you can't control how the defense reacts to the play.
This is where technique is really important. A good defender will keep the blocker at arm's length, basically not letting the blocker get into his chest. This allows him to disengage quickly without much resistance from the blocker. Demarcus Ware is great at this.Fantasy football fans... Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
I'm loving this so far! It actually looks like if a RB is running towards the corner and you are on that outside part as a DL you can actually get OFF THE BLOCK and get to him! Hopefully this is just a start like Ian said there's a lot more that can be fine tuned with this but hopefully User Sacks will actually happen in this years Madden, maybe.Caution: Whiskey, weed and Warren Zevon before writing.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: A Deeper Look Into Pass Blocking
So the accuracy took a hit while throwing on the run, is it similar to the accuracy hit in 2k8 ?? Were you permitted to hold the sprint button/trigger and throw simultaneously; did the QB have to set his feet to throw accurately ? This is was stopped the roll and chuck in 2k8; it was simply impossible to consistently complete passes while throwing on the run. Basically will the roll and chuck in madden finally be dead and buried come 8.14.09 ?
How about McNabb, Vince Young or Romo ?
As for McNabb, Young and those guys, I didn't get a chance to test with them or play against them.Last edited by LBzrule; 05-12-2009, 01:56 PM.Comment
