Could be related could not be related. But Take Two filed a trademark for "Ball over everything."

A simulation game is beyond a pipe dream imo. The 2k nfl partnership was announced in 2020. What company would spend 6 years developing a game without acquiring the necessary licenses and having no guarantee that even 6 years later that they would be able to get said license at all?

Not only that, but once upon a time the company in question had this license but the league stripped them of it really without warning and then blocked them from acquiring it for the next 20 years.

I’m sorry, I don’t buy it. It’s way more believable that this game was always going the arcade route, crossed the line into sim too far and had to restart (twice) and then either was abandoned or will be dropping this year or next as the arcade title they were always trying for

Money talks, if the NFL ever feels like it can gain more revenue by bringing in another gaming company it will.

The NFL license is now the most lucrative sports license out there.

The FIFA brand name is nearly as lucrative, but it doesn't encompass an entire league (the biggest in its sport) like the NFL. And we have yet to see if it's brand is hurt without all the various pro soccer leagues/players attached (Premier, La Liga, etc.).

We've seen Take - Two expand and re-enter two sports markets they either "abandon" or never existed in (PGA AND Pro Tennis).

I think it's a longshot for Take-Two (not Sega the previous licensee that 'burned' the NFL and supposedly 'lost' the license) to gain the sim license, but not totally out of the realm of possibility. There is way more money to be made by both parties (the NFL & Take - Two) agreeing to a sim license deal over the less appealing arcade license.

Now, Take - Two could just pull an EA (with the NBA license) and just release feeble mobile titles with the arcade license. That doesn't seem like a good business move, when it's the biggest sports license and you're just getting the scraps (arcade license). Instead the bigger and better license remains with your biggest game publishing rival, so why get in bed with the NFL ('again') in the first place?

And as we've seen a lot this generation many games take 4, 5 or 6 years to release. I don't think you get that deep in the well - or plan to - with only releasing an arcade title in mind. Recent history (EA shelving the EA Big subsidiary) and their own releases (WWE Battleground & NBA Playgrounds) tells us those games aren't viable.

I suspect that at one time - I have no evidence to this opinion, mind you - Wildcard Football was one of the 2K games, but it wasn't to 2K's liking or they realized it wouldn't have far enough reach (even with full NFL/NFLPA licensing).

I been said arcade games no longer tickle the fancy in this ADHD era where little Timmy has access to hundreds of games through a subscription
The NFL street crowd has grown up with older kids
NBA playgrounds has yet to make a sequel because the numbers didn't hit 2k target
I truly believe that's why this game is taking so long to come out and not because of the pandemic [emoji40] they're just buying themselves some time to pack as much as they can because they know the blow back gonna be harsh

          Basically what I'm saying is
Easy access to hundreds of games killed off sports arcade games
When 2k signed that deal with the NFL, I believe PSN premium wasn't available it was only the 4 monthly games

Yeah, as much as people say to the contrary (not sure why when the evidence points to it), Roger coming into power (as the league commissioner) coincided with the NFL going exclusive with most partnerships. I think he was the driving force in the league going in that direction.

Anyway, I'm not suggesting that the NFL will ever end its partnership with EA. That is a pipedream and will likely never happen, beyond the game having John Madden's name attached to it.

I'm only speculating about bringing in another business partner to increase their revenue further. They have multiple media rights partners because they can make a lot more from 3 or 4 than just 1 or 2.

There are many reasons why it may or may not happen, I've mentioned a lot of them throughout this thread, ironically many of the reasons not to the NFL has created by only being with one game producer for such a long period of time.

When EA and the NFL first went exclusive, there is a poster here, Dr. Jones, who I think mostly hangs around the hockey forum, used to work at EA at that time.

At that time, the NFL made more revenue by going exclusive with one company vs all 4 companies combined.

I don't know if that is still feasible today, but that was what we learned almost 20 years ago.

First off all the league didn't strip them of anything. Your guys at EA spent a half billion dollars to get the rights because it was scared of the competition. Learn your facts!

It does take 4-6 years to develop a game but the problem I have is we are at 4 years since 2k announced the new nfl partnership and clearly stated it was arcade.

Now we are speculating that maybe in 2-3 years they can go sim. I don’t see it unless 2k got assurances the sim license will be available after this agreement.

Otherwise as far as I see it, it’s like asking someone to invest in a cocktail bar in a perfect location in the Bahamas. It’ll be like printing money if it opens….but I can’t promise once you build the place and get it all set up that you will have a liquor license or be allowed to serve food ever.

Now I’m not saying 2k will never get the license or have an opportunity either but seems like the most likely scenario was that 2k planned a game mostly around a my city or Maddens the yard (arcade style with realistic models and movement) with the hope of building that into sim if the opportunity becomes available. That would at least guarantee some return on investment that going all in on sim wouldn’t

You're correct, EA even went as far as trying to convince the NBA to go exclusive with the license as to wipe out all of 2K Sports and have zero competition in the two main sports games. Lucky the NBA was smart and did not sell out. Imagine if it did.

Also don't forget...in hopes to completely eliminate 2k, EA secured a license with ESPN..which IIRC was never used in the same capacity that 2k used it, it was blatantly obvious why it was done.

And to shut 2K out of football completely, EA went exclusive with both NCAA and Arena Football soon after.

This is definitely true. I believe the price for the exclusive license was significantly more than what each company was paying altogether for the non-exclusive license.

That said, it is not impossible for the NFL to create a situation where the license is opened up and it's possible to make more money than they currently are.

It's probably not as simple as taking the current cost of the exclusive license and charging both 2k and EA half that cost so they get paid the same but have 2 games out leading to likely more sales and royalties, but I have zero doubt there is a model that could allow for multiple sim games in the market and make more money than an exclusive license.

The question is what that model is and whether the NFL even thinks it is worth pursuing or not.

I think odds are that if we had multiple games, the total sales of NFL sim games would be higher than what Madden sales right now by itself. I think there are plenty of people that buy Madden now that would then buy both games. There are numerous people that loved 2k, don't like Madden and haven't been buying it that would buy 2k, and then there are people that would continue to just stick with Madden. I would assume it's safe to say total NFL game copies sold would be higher given the demographic overlap and how football gamers are.

But, like I said, would the NFL feel it's worth pursuing this model with no guarantees it actually will make more money? And, would Take-Two even be willing to spend the money for a sim license with zero guarantee they'd be able to make a big enough dent in Madden's sales to make it worth their money? And, lastly, would EA even be willing to let this opportunity happen if they could just pay a higher premium for the exclusive license and guarantee themselves the market once more? Unless the NFL ups that price to an astronomical amount, EA will turn a profit with how much Madden sales and with how successful MUT is.

All that to say, there are plenty of variables at play, I have no doubt there exists a scenario where it is possible for the NFL license to open up and all parties turn a profit with the NFL making more money, but I also am at a point where I won't hold my breath waiting for that to ever become a reality again. We're 20 years into the sim license being exclusive. I'd love for it to be opened up, but I'm done wasting effort hoping it ever will.

Oh totally, it's definitely not. To oversimplify it, let's say it cost $2 billion to be exclusive? It'll cost at least $3 billion total to be non-exclusive (if that make sense), if not maybe $3.5 billion.
