It would be neat to see the costs involved in all the scenarios. Obviously we will never see that, but it would open the eyes of some people.

Like I said in my original post, I think there is an avenue for there to be multiple games and the NFL makes more money than before, but the question is ultimately does the NFL feel that avenue is even worth exploring when the current setup is basically a guaranteed profit of similar amounts each year.

      The real question is
What is the 2k plan B
      If Madden renews the license[emoji53]
If all that talk about getting their foot in with the NFL and nothing happens after that
I would hope 2k wash their hands and just go the All-Pro football route with generics or not!

That said, it is not impossible for the NFL to create a situation where the license is opened up and it's possible to make more money than they currently are.

It's probably not as simple as taking the current cost of the exclusive license and charging both 2k and EA half that cost so they get paid the same but have 2 games out leading to likely more sales and royalties, but I have zero doubt there is a model that could allow for multiple sim games in the market and make more money than an exclusive license.

The question is what that model is and whether the NFL even thinks it is worth pursuing or not.

I think odds are that if we had multiple games, the total sales of NFL sim games would be higher than what Madden sales right now by itself. I think there are plenty of people that buy Madden now that would then buy both games. There are numerous people that loved 2k, don't like Madden and haven't been buying it that would buy 2k, and then there are people that would continue to just stick with Madden. I would assume it's safe to say total NFL game copies sold would be higher given the demographic overlap and how football gamers are.

But, like I said, would the NFL feel it's worth pursuing this model with no guarantees it actually will make more money? And, would Take-Two even be willing to spend the money for a sim license with zero guarantee they'd be able to make a big enough dent in Madden's sales to make it worth their money? And, lastly, would EA even be willing to let this opportunity happen if they could just pay a higher premium for the exclusive license and guarantee themselves the market once more? Unless the NFL ups that price to an astronomical amount, EA will turn a profit with how much Madden sales and with how successful MUT is.

All that to say, there are plenty of variables at play, I have no doubt there exists a scenario where it is possible for the NFL license to open up and all parties turn a profit with the NFL making more money, but I also am at a point where I won't hold my breath waiting for that to ever become a reality again. We're 20 years into the sim license being exclusive. I'd love for it to be opened up, but I'm done wasting effort hoping it ever will.
Bravo, perfectly said! I agree with your observations.

What's important to the NFL is also expanding the audience and getting a younger demographic to play NFL games to then grow up to be consumers of the actual sport and drive there interest to play the sport at a young age. It's why the NFL opened up the license to 2K to produce an arcade game. The equation of Money is not always as simple as how much they will make from an exclusive license. It also has to do with brand awareness and bringing more eyes to the sport. Ultimately it will be in the best interest of the NFL to open up the simulation license to multiple developers to heighten interest, expand the audience playing the sport, insuring better quality of the game due to competition, and making more money and getting more eyes on the sport. It's a win win for the NFL. To be honest it's crazy they haven't allowed this to happen sooner. And for those that say exclusivity is the way to go for the license in order to make the most money, think about how much sense that would make for the broadcasting rights? Imagine the NFL only dealing with one network, and airing all of there games on one channel. Would they make more money this way or are they making more money allowing multiple networks to air their games? The answer to that question is quite obvious.

I always heard that when the original exclusive was signed Disney actually had a higher bid than EA with the plan to sell the license to as many publishers as they could. The NFL wouldn’t go that route because it would’ve meant way less control over what games got made and what went into those games.

With the NFL as concerned about their image as ever I don’t see that happening now either

I’ve said this for years. The NFL misses out on making fans of football out of kids that don’t like madden. When those kids turn to NBA2k or MLB the show they grow up buying baseball and basketball jerseys and tickets to those leagues games.

If you have more games the league has more opportunity to turn ****** NFL fans into more die hard ones. It’s way more than copies of Madden figuring into NFL profits

But one thing you missed [emoji848]
                Those two games (NBA&MLB)
                Are not arcade games
So if the NFL wants to capture the kid audience let another company get a share of that sim-Pie
Because kids are definitely not buying jerseys because of NBA playgrounds/WWE battlegrounds
They buy jerseys from sim products from 2k and the show
Why kids not buying jerseys because of Madden[emoji848]
Because Madden is arcade that's cross playing as a sim
But the NFL better make up their mind because they want to simulate what the NFL league does but arcade would go against that and have kids living in a fantasy world
It does make since for kids 5-10
Just to get them interested like cartoons on a Saturday

I don't know any that do. They buy jerseys because of their favorite players who play in the real game. As a teenager, I didn't buy a Chris Webber Michigan jersey, or a Jerry Stackhouse Carolina jersey because of a video game. I bought it because they were my favorite players to watch in real games on tv. I give Simbayless this much...he is ride or die lol!!

I think it's just more cost effective on EA's part to allow it to become 'non-exclusive' again cause the barrier for entry is so high (license fees plus development cost).

It's kind of why we are down to one game in every major US sport. Licensing fees plus development makes it damn near impossible to start up a new game.

I knew nothing about football and even less about the players who played the sport when I was 10 years old but playing Tecmo Super Bowl made me a fan of the sport and the players who played it (Bo Jackson or the Nigerian Nightmare Christian Okoye anyone). I in turn, turned into a viewer of the sport and was more invested in the actual NFL and the merchandise all because of the videogame. Tecmo Super Bowl taught me the basic rules of the sport that prior had not caught my interests. Simbayless is right on point in my humble opinion. You want to get the potential future consumer of the sport at an early age before there interests points towards another sport or any other entertainment product for that matter. Now more then ever there are so many choices as to what you can spend your time doing in front of a screen so you want to get the future consumer at the earliest age possible so that they become a life long fan of your product.

Yeah, I meant the 4 major sports (football, basketball, baseball & hockey).

We have multiple titles for golf, tennis and some other pro sports, true, but I think the high licensing and development costs (plus the NFL exclusive deal) is why there is only one game for each.

True, I'm literally a fan of the Spurs, Bills, Texas Rangers - and sometimes Buffalo Sabres - because of video games.

I'm from Maryland, but my parents are foreigners and video games helped me understand and fall in love with sports.

All my favorite athletes in the 90's (David Robinson, Juan Gonzalez, Pudge Rodriguez, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, etc.) were based on their video game avatar being awesome (IMO) to use.

You're speaking broadly about getting into a sport through a game, and I agree with that.

simbayless specifically said sim games do this and games like Playgrounds don't. I'm curious what info he has to make that claim.

I used the Chiefs exclusively on Tecmo Super Bowl, specifically for Okoye at RB and Derrick Thomas on defense as they were the only real-life Chiefs I knew about. Next thing I knew I was a hardcore fan of the entire, real-life team which was weird being an L.A. native.
