Re: Best runningback of all time
Considering Dallas lack of big passing numbers in the past, being 4th on that list, doesn't mean a whole lot. That's why Tony Romo is already shattering so many Dallas passing records. Even Aikman's numbers as many SB's as they won, really put up pedestrian passing numbers.
regardless, Emmitt Smith being 4th all time in receptions for one of the most successful franchises in NFL history is good for any era
Not to mention averaged less than 7 yards a reception.
There are plenty of backs who were better receivers than Emmitt. Guys like Ronnie Harmon, or Darrin Nelson made plays in the passing game, Emmitt simply was not capable of. What about Tony Galbreath, or Tony Nathan? Keith Byars, Herschel Walker. All were more capable receivers than Emmitt. Not better runners but better in the pass game.
maybe you should make a listComment

Re: Best runningback of all time
"lack of big passing numbers" for this era maybe. Romo is shattering passing records just as a lot of QBs and WRs are in this pass happy era, but it would be pretty ridiculous to compare this era to the era in which Staubach, Hayes, Pearson, Hill, etc. played

and I didnt put him in the "running after catch" category did I
sure, but my list only included all time great running backs
maybe you should make a list
Dallas passing numbers no matter the era are pretty pedestrian. Until now they have never really had a prolific passing game, no matter when it was. If you look at their top all time receiving leaders outside of Irvin none of them really put up big career numbers. Jason Witten is already #2 on that list.
If you want to say he's one of the top receiving RB's of all time. You just proved Mkoz's point.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
averaging 5 - 7 yards per catch is not exactly "going nowhere" with what Dallas was using those swing passes for...and his career long reception was 86 yards
catching those swing passes in the flat caused quite a few problems for defenses and it's pretty obvious as to why

you stated that Walter Payton is one of the best catchers of the football from RB position, and I agree (simply forgot to put him on my uber scientific list)...take a gander at Payton's career receptions numbers

that you are trying to discredit those numbers proves my pointLast edited by ZB9; 08-11-2010, 08:42 PM.Comment

pedestrian compared to who? the Bears?

his numbers say Emmitt Smith was one of the best among the all time great running backs at catching the football
that you are trying to discredit those numbers proves my point
Numbers aside, Payton was simply a more gifted receiver. I am not sure how that can be disputed.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
Perhaps we look at that category differently. Im talking about simply having good hands and catching the ball from the running back spot (whether it be little swing passes or whatever), not rac ability or route running ability.Comment

Re: Best runningback of all time
yes Emmitt averaged more catches per season than Payton, however it is true that Payton ran a wider variety of routes. Overall, Payton was a bigger receiving threat that Smith. However, when it comes to simply catching the ball, Smith caught everything thrown to him and it those swing passes were thrown to him quite a bit.
