Bottom line message to all the kids out there: if you cheat, you can win a Super Bowl.

The players didn't defend Brady because they think he's innocent. I promise you, Richard Sherman does not think Brady is innocent. They defended him because they support any legal precedent that challenges the NFL. The NFLPA is a weak union, and always has been. They wanted a win FOR THE UNION, not for Brady.

This now opens the door to vacating the Super Bowl win. Those two equipment guys are not millionaires. After a few years, when they're out of football, someone's going to offer them big cash to write a tell all. When the whole story comes out, and Brady is directly implicated, it will be a Black Sox scandal for the ages.

Regardless, by destroying his phone Brady will always be looked at with Mark McGuire/Lance Armstrong like suspicion. He's a cheater, everyone knows he's a cheater, and it's only a matter of time before the whole story comes out.

Thank God the suspension was wiped, otherwise we would have had to hear Boston Sports Fans whining about it every single day of our lives for the rest of eternity.

They will anyway though because that's how they are.

Good luck getting those rings back from the players on the team.

I agree with the tenor of this post but I don't know about vacating the SB victory or it being of Black Sox scandal levels but Brady and by extension the Patriots are forever going to be besmirched by this. Those equipment guys are going to get paid big time and I have a feeling that they have dirt on EVERYONE not just Brady. The furor may die down for a couple years but when it rears its ugly head again there's going to be a reckoning in the court of public opinion for sure.

                Seems a bit harsh...

On topic, whoever said Goodell is taking the heat for owners and league, that's on point. He's the bad guy, and he certainly has played a large role, but he's also taken a beating because he's the face of the NFL. Like the OP said, he's getting paid generously to do it, but let's not act like the owners don't back him up. If they would've bucked, oh man. Mutiny! We heard some rumblings but nothing too aggressive.

Goodell's problem is getting his hands on everything. He gave up punishment powers for this, only to name himself as the mediator or whatever on the appeal. Come on dude. He thinks he's smarter then he is. Now he's dug such a big hole that as he tries to climb out he buries himself that much more.

I will say that with new media and the breaking of stuff like the Bounty scandal and Rice's video surfacing and the crapstorm that has launched, that Goodell is also in the wrong place at the wrong time. That stuff was always swept under the rug or never grew the legs it does now. No commissioner has had to answer to that stuff as often as Goodell. But even when he tries to fix legacy issues (like extremely light punishment for domestic assault), he finds a way to twist it all up and create more problems for himself.

I don't think canning him will happen, and if it would even fix anything. Let's not act like the next guy won't be handpicked. It would be a PR move only. Besides, commissioners are supposed to be the big bad wolf to the players and (mostly) the fans. It's just been to the extreme for Goodell.

Yep it will be huge if the NFL loses the appeal.

Right now Brady or any player can pick a ball up and walk over to a ref, stick a needle in it and let as much air out of it as they want. The NFL can't do a thing about it except fine the player ~$5,000. The FOX Sports article says players could put a substance on their jersey and NFL can't do anything about it.

At this point, if the appeal is not reversed, the CBA is dead as it is unenforceable and we may be heading for a big lockout. The NFLPA will not allow modification and without that the game is under question as nothing can be done to stop cheating.

That's a really good break down. This especially stands out (and is deeper looked at later in the article):

The court is insisting that the commissioner is bound in his player discipline by the specific provisions of the CBA. That is, the court wants all discipline enumerated.
I also really agree with Goodell being stupid in comparing this to PED suspension. The thought of that is ridiculous alone, along with it giving the judge something to focus on when analyzing the 4 games.

If this stands, expect the next CBA to be longer than War and Peace.

If that's the message you got then you need to read again.

Deflating ball even if it did happen didn't even effect the Seahawks game. It didn't effect the idiots throwing the ball on the 1 yard line.

Also you look at the Colts game there was a lot more going on for the Colts loss than deflated footballs. The team just got dominated.

Also comparing Deflating a football too PED'S is just asinine and not even close to a correct comparison.

Steeler fans must have short memories when it comes to qb's.

Everyone has already addressed the other parts of your post but I'd like to add something about the cell phone part. How many of the texts do you think were related to the footballs? And how many do you think were things Brady wouldn't want released? Under no circumstance should the NFL or Ted Wells have the authority to ask for his cell phone and he has no obligation to give it to them. How long before PFT leaks what's on his phone anyway?

How anyone can defend the NFL/Goodell is beyond me at this point. He's shown countless times that he is incompetent and at best his punishment is wildly inconsistent. If you think slightly under inflated footballs in a blowout win can lead to a vacated super bowl win you're going to be disappointed. Anything the ball guys had on Brady they released. Brady has also been directly implicated already and there is no tell all book coming out from Patriots ball guys. If there is one it will be ghostwritten by Roger Goodell with a foreword by Ted Wells.

So if a player is "generally aware" of incidents which may be against the league's rules and conduct policy and obstructing any kind of investigation it's ok?
