    Re: NFL Off Topic

Stemming from a discussion starting in the Seahawks/Panthers thread, why don't teams value timeouts in the second half, especially when trailing?

Seahawks just used one on 3rd and 24. Every week it seems like teams are deathly afraid to lose 5 yards just because.

Followed by a punt on 4th and 13 from midfield after already going for it on 4th earlier in the drive. Makes burning a TO on 3rd and 24 even more of a head scratcher.

I'm glad the chart was such a huge hit.

Just a visual way of representing how the current playoff teams match up against past Super Bowl winners (all but Denver match up well). Nothing more, nothing less.

And the 1991 Redskins are still the greatest team that no one really talks about.

I generally think coaches are too willing to burn timeouts to save themselves from delay of game penalties.

Key 3rd/4th and short late in the game, yes, burn the timeout. 3rd and a mile, no, 5 further yards back is not worth the timeout.

Its my biggest pet peeve in football. I don't care what the down and distance is, if it is the 3rd quarter of a close game I'm not calling a timeout.
Some team does it every week though. Second and seven with eleven minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Lets call a timeout.

He's really bringing down the quality of that group.

No, but it suggests that they were the best defense by a team that won a Super Bowl.

From my viewpoint, the 1976 Steelers were the best defense of all time. They didn't complete the threepeat that year (Harris and Bleier were both out in the AFC Championship) but their defense had 3 straight shutouts and 5 in their last 9 games. They allowed just 28 points in that 9 game stretch.

It kills me when people think he was a nobody in college. He was 20-5 as a starter, with a crap ton of come from behind victories. He was nicknamed the comeback kid in Michigan.

Was he a star? Not at all, as evidenced by his draft place. But, he had shown a knack for rising to the occasion.

His physical tools paled in comparison to his peers, they still do for the most part. His greatness lies in his heart and in his mind. He's slow as anyone I've ever seen; Bledsoe was faster. He doesn't have a ton of arm strength.

What he has is the drive to do tedious repetitions more than anyone else. That's where his accuracy and ball speed come from. He's more athletic now, at 38, than when he entered the league. That right there shows what kind of competitor he is.

That's why he wasn't highly regarded. He didn't have a ton of physical tools, but he was most certainly viewed as an ultimate competitor.

I hear you, but nah. As good of flashes that Brady showed in college, he never showed anything to make anyone think he'd ever be remotely close to what's he's evolved into. And that 20-5 record was also helped by some nasty defenses and pretty decent RBs.

Also, lots of guys have heart and drive and don't turn into what he's turned into.

Exactly...if you were forced to bet your whole entire life savings on Tom Brady evolving into the GOAT in 2000 you would be thinking how am I going to explain to my wife that we are about to lose our life savings.

Remember this is what Brady looked like at the combine.

Not really. Gotta remember in college taking a sack shows up as a rushing attempt.
