I agree with the Mike Silver article. Goodell should just flex some muscle on this. Let's be real here, the freaking Pro Bowl has better ratings than the ALCS. The Orioles will live with a reschedule.

While I hate injuries, you're going to have a QB get knocked out for most of the year, once teams start to key in.

Tomlin may have a point but let's also remember that most read option QBs are guys who can use their feet especially well to get out of too many bad situations. Russell Wilson is a mobile guy but you don't think of him in the same manner as RGIII and he didn't get dinged up too bad. I think it all comes down to having a good O-line when running the read option. If you have a team with a bad to mediocre o-line it's not going to be very effective at all.

I don't see why Baltimore can't just open on the weekend. Why does it have to be on a Thursday night?

Makes no sense for the Orioles to be force to change their schedule around. They could be in the middle of a playoff chase again.

The SB winning team opens the first game of the year, there is huge fanfare around it, prime time... it's arguably the biggest regular season football game of the year. Every fan is drooling for some real games and will be watching. It's a big deal for marketing purposes alone, as well as the traditional last chance for the fans to "celebrate" their championship team.

It happens every year for every SB winning team. From an MLB perspective, why care? But from an overall perspective, it's a MUCH bigger deal than game 98 of 162 (or whatever it is) against the White Sox.

The other aspect is that every team plays at least one game on Thursday. The benefit to the SB team (and the lucky team that gets to play them) is that these are the only teams that don't have to deal with a short week all season bc of it. Doesn't make sense to give that up.

They should just play the Ravens game on Sunday instead of Thursday instead of having the Super Bowl Champions open on the road. That's nonsense. Unless the Orioles will be at home on Sunday too, lol.

What's the difference between opening up on a Sunday compared to Thursday, other than not "sharing the spotlight" with the other 30 teams?

Or move the game up to Wednesday. I don't buy for a second the NFL doesn't want to play on Wednesday because of Rosh Hashanah. Sporting events are played on religious holidays all the time.

I'd rather not have the game on Wednesday, but eh. Not for religious stuff as I'm not Jewish, but just from a "football on Wednesday is stupid and we'll have to wait one more day between the opener and the rest of the week" standpoint lol.

How many Football games are played on Religious Holidays per year?

Oh and I agree with Matrix in that Football being played on a Wednesday is stupid.

NFL has played on Christmas day in the past. MLB plays on Easter. NBA on Christmas day.

Wednesday is no different than Thursday. Both are equally as stupid. Should have two games on Monday and the rest played on Sunday.

They need to just do one game on Monday night as that whole Monday Night Doubleheader on Opening Weekend is stupid as well.
