    Re: NFL Off Topic

The inconsistency is because we don't have all the information, and I'm starting to get the feeling 'it's just weed' is the new 'it was just adderral' since the league isn't going to comment on the test results publicly and players are then free to spin it to whatever angle works best for them.

Are players saying "its just weed"? what is this rhetoric coming from all of a sudden?

Anyway Will Hill (according to former teammate Deon Grant) says he tested positive due to second hand smoke...second hand smoke.

Hopefully he didnt tell this to Coughlin or Reese because he would probably guarantee a release. Just man up Hill. The Giants claimed Hill was on a 3 strikes policy and this was his official 3rd. However Will Hill would be picked up pretty quickly if he were released, very possibly by division opponents. So they have a very interesting decision to make. I;d keep him just because he costs us nothing and plays like a top safety. We could use him after his 6 week suspension, and cut bait when his contract expires.

It's just weed, but my goodness man. A few hours high is not worth putting multi million dollar salaries at risk.

It's not, but it damn sure isn't worth no lifetime ban.

That's going a bit overboard and at that point, you're heading down a slippery slope if you were to go that route.

we'll like I stated Washington is on his 4th violation of the drug thing he got his 3rd last yr and was suspended 4 games so if that's true what u saying Washington shoulda been banned a yr ago... but he only got 4 games.

and Gordon is only on his 3rd time last yr he got 2 games suspension... so tech if this is his 3rd time just like washinton he should only be gone 4 games because its the same offense what makes washinton different from Gordon? they both smoke so why should 1 be banned a yr for his 3rd time when other guy only got 4 games for his 3rd time?? not count Washington has more problems then Gordon with beating of his gf/wife.

It never takes "they make millions of dollars" guy long to show up and I never understand what that has to do with anything. Folks find ANY reason to throw athlete salaries in their face.

They could go drink and drive, get a DUI (or worse, injure/kill a person) and barely get punished, so you're right about that.

Josh Gordon was issued a speeding ticket in Strongsville, Ohio over the Memorial Day weekend, while his passenger was cited for marijuana possession.
The speeding ticket is obviously a non-story, but it shows a remarkable lack of common sense and self awareness for a player in Gordon's situation — appealing a year-long suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy — to get caught with someone with marijuana. The easy inference, of course, is that the weed didn't just belong to Gordon's friend. The situation will undoubtedly complicate Gordon's appeal of his ban, and make it far more likely the 16-game punishment is upheld. Gordon is risking a lifetime ban with his reckless behavior. It's a depressing waste of talent for a 23-year-old wideout who just won the league's receiving title.

wow I just think he's not gonna learn he'll def get a yr now with failing or missing a test and now getting stop and having weed in the car.
Blackmon has apparently been doing the same things since his suspension. He hasn't been doing the mandatory things the NFL requires and basically guarantees a reinstatement. So far he hasn't applied for reinstatement and the Jaguars aren't expecting him to be reinstated this year. Right now, it looks like he won't even bother to try and be reinstated and will never been in the league again.

I don't feel bad for people who repeatedly do stupid things but all the arguments about money (that only ever come up when professional athletes get caught doing something dumb/illegal) just sounds like jealousy.

If its not something that undermines the integrity of the game like PEDs, or something that [actually] sullies the NFL brand: morbid felonies, then a lifetime ban has no business being on the table imo.

Im not really all that interested in how many times a guy is busted [for weed]. Lifetime ban isn't anything to hand out willy nilly. Thats ending a man's career beyond blackballing; like a TO or Chad Johnson or Jemarcus Russell. That is closing the door on any possible career they can ever have for the rest of their life [in the NFL]. Can't do that over some damn weed man. People been sent to prison and been allowed to recover from it without a lifetime ban from society [or the NFL for that matter].

And I hope nobody uses the "well they don't deserve the right to be in the NFL" card over this discussion either.

It's about the image of the league at some point though. Cocaine and Heroin aren't PED either, but I'm sure the NFL doesn't want guys using those drugs either. Now I know what the response is going to be, weed =/ cocaine obviously. But it's still against the rules for guys to do it. Guys still do it and don't seem to learn. I don't see why banning for life is so off the table.

Again, playing in the NFL is a luxury imo. You can't stay off weed, then at least do what Ricky Williams did and retire. That or work somewhere that doesn't drug test. Any job that drug tests has the right for punishing you for not following the rules, even if 'it's just weed'. My issue isn't with the drug itself, it's with the stupidity and in some cases pure arrogance of the person using the drug.

And don't paint this as me saying first offense = lifetime ban either. I'm a believer in 3 strikes and you're out. Maybe not lifetime (and looking back at my original post I never said lifetime so IDK where that's coming from either) but if you can't follow the rules the league certainly has the right to kick you out for as long as they see fit until you possibly rehabilitate yourself.

Their ending their own career if they repeatedly keep getting busted for the same crap. It isn't like the NFL is just itching to ban someone, especially a player who has true star potential like Gordon.

It seems pretty simple to me, stop smoking or lose your multi-million dollar contract and go get a regular job. It's illegal, the NFL says don't do it.
