Unrelated, Michael Sam has left his CFL team, sounds like maybe his time in football is really over.

There's also the traditional offensive HB as well.

Yeah, apparently he left due to personal reasons. Jim Popp, the GM of the Als said in the Montreal Gazette a couple days ago that his football future is on the line but wouldn't elaborate on the nature of why Sam left.

While looking at some former Bucs players highlights I got to thinking. Does Mike Alstott make it into the hof as a fullback?

I'd say no. Larry Csonka and John Riggins are both FBs if I'm not mistaken and Alstott's stats don't match up.

John Riggins is in the hof as a RB. A counter to that argument is that yes Alstott's stats dont match but he is not that far behind. Csonka rushed for 8,801 yrds, and 64 tds. Alstott rushed for 5,088 yrds, and 58 tds with more the 500 less carries then Csonka. Alstott also caught the ball 305 times for 2,284 yrds and 13 touchdowns compared to Csonka's 106 receptions for 820 yrds and 4 tds. Alstott had 71 total tds to Csonka's 68.

As far as accolades, Alstott is right there with Csonka. Csonka made 5 pro bowls, 3 all pros, won two superbowls, and a superbowl mvp. Alstott made 6 pro bowls and 4 all pros, with 1 super bowl.

What also gives Alstott the nod imo is that he was the last true fullback that is constantly used in a nfl offense. There are no more powerful, explosive fullbacks like Alstott. Now fullbacks are purely blockers, or the hybrid type players who make most of their contributions in the passing game (John Kuhn, Marcel Reece). Teams had to gameplan for Alstott. He was automatically in short yardage situations because he would bounce off and plow through defenders, was versatile enough to take any carry in any situation to the house, and was a bulldozing blocker. Idk how good of a blocker Csonka was, but Alstott was as powerful as Csonka and blocked just as well as Tony Richardson. Also, he was the face of Tampa. To my knowledge, no other fullback has ever been the face of their organization. Idk who was the face of those Csonka dolphins teams, but if it was Csonka, that props Alstott even more so as being on the same level as Csonka.

Looking at the HoF site this makes me question how they decide to classify players between halfback, fullback, and runningback.

Edit: Seems to be an era thing

Absolutely. He was going strong for just about his entire 12 year career. The A-train is on of my all time favorite nicknames.

That news came out on the same day William Gay of the Steelers wrote a very good article about domestic violence etc etc. So on the same day we get a very thoughtful and well worded article from a current NFLer. On the flipside a HOFer and a guy who used to have a TV gig is completely tarnishing his reputation and is a total D-Bag.

I find it interesting how far the NFL will go to appease their fans in so much that they incriminate the player before the law does.

Looking at Adrian Peterson as an example...while I have my own thoughts on the matter, the Vikings wanted rid of him because of his "negative impact" on the team - before any decision was made from a judicial standpoint. If that was me at my job, I likely wouldn't have seen my company do a thing at least until a decision was made. I understand that some crimes/indictments are far worse than others but the unbiased view that one is "innocent until proven guilty" is far from what occurs in today's society.

...then again, maybe that's a discussion for another day/time.
